Hey Mike, my signature is just for you

About your post… you didnt even fulfill the initial promise about GW2 how could we even believe a second you “work on the things that we think will most delight and entertain you”
Seriously ? what about gvg, news skills, REAL mcm FIX…etc
instead what you do ? 300gold color tag ? inproove the damage log ( way more important than ALLLLL the fix / balanced needed in that game ) a living story 2 that no one care about because everyone want REAL content..

yeah i see that you work on stuff that will no doubt NOT entertain us.

Anyway. Good Luck with your game

Just gonna ignore the warrior nerf then I guess?

You should be forced to main a mesmer for a couple of years, or a necro, or even a ranger, before you have the right to complain about a nerf to warriors.

I main a thief.

I wasnt complaining about the warrior nerf.

Dude just said they arent balancing anything, when theres a giant list of class changes in the patch notes.

A small list of changes made to look like a giant list of changes, as has been the usual with all of their feature pack blogs

Communicating with you

I know some are concerned about whether ArenaNet is communicating with you and listening and responding to your feedback. As you saw with yesterday’s announcement, we do. All of us at ArenaNet play the game with you, chat with you and read your forum posts, and work on the things that we think will most delight and entertain you.

We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: we don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. Creating fun is an uncertain business: sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t; sometimes we go back to the drawing board over and over before we get something right. If we make optimistic promises and then can’t deliver on them, everyone suffers. So when we attend a trade show or give an interview, we’re there to talk about what we’re getting ready to ship, not to speculate on what we might ship someday.

Don’t read that as meaning that we don’t want to talk with you about the longer-term roadmap. The intention of the CDI threads is to talk with you about the roadmap. We want to talk design philosophy with you and hear how you want to see the game evolve. When those discussions trigger development, we’ll work internally until we have something we’re proud of before we’ll announce it.

A lot of the questions I’ve seen posted this week are as simple as this: does ArenaNet have an agenda to never do something? That’s almost never the case, and if it is the case you deserve to know and we’ll make sure we get more clear. In general the simple truth is this: when we’re not currently working on something, it’s because we’re working on something else instead that we think is more important for the game and community.

Our developers post on these forums on a voluntary basis, and in addition to developers, we have a community team who can clarify and be the bridge between players and developers. They’re ready to engage you on these topics. And I know it’s hard for the community team to engage players across all the forums and sites where these questions are being discussed, so I’m going to support the team in consolidating and focusing as necessary, so that we can be clear to the community where you can go to get a response.

See you in-game,
Mike O’Brien

What he really means is:
“We don’t have much to talk about because we’re not doing much and our excuse for this is that we don’t want to make any false promises”

So…when you weren’t working on the changes to WvW that players thought were vital for the survival of the game mode, you were working on a golem mastery line and one new trick? That’s more important than the various bugs, exploits, ridiculous achievements that you admitted were out of line, and generally making any meaningful gameplay change or incentive for players to start playing WvW?

Or was the past 7 months (since EotM release) devoted to pondering over what colour commander tags you would introduce.

It’s fine if you don’t talk us regularly Anet. But when you make barely any changes at all to a feature which most consider to be a vital part of the gw2 experience, don’t be surprised when people question you.

I appreciate this post, and i apologize if i’m going too far, but the lack of meaningful changes to anything except your living story is quite alarming.

I had always held onto the hope that the WvW team was working on something huge in the background that they couldn’t talk to us about (hence their lack of communication).
Ty for confirming my hope, Anet! This is both unexpected and exciting! Me and my family are so excited! I agree with OP though, just slow down you don’t want to outwork yourselves. I can’t begin to fathom how vigorously you had to have been working to make these huge updates in this short period of time (only 2 years!).

The fact that Guild Wars 2 does not have this type of gear is the main reason I don’t play it currently. If Anet were to introduce content-specific rewards like the OP mentioned I would play again. It’s actually that simple for me.

Hard content needed for gw2's longevity.

This will be a wall of text. Scroll down for a TL;DR

No, I did not come here to say that Guild Wars 2 needs raids.
Although I would not be directly opposed to them, I understand Anet’s reasons for keeping them out of the game and I believe that they will not go back on their word of saying that there would be no raids when they were first promoting the game. The idea of raids and the gear treadmill that comes with it goes directly against their basic design philosophy

I also understand why people want raids in this game. Complaints are generally as follows:
“There is not enough to do at endgame”
“Guild Wars 2 is casual. It lacks hard content”

Now, the thing is, although I disagree with people’s solutions to these arguments (namely, raiding), I completely agree with the problems people are trying to address by their promotion of the idea of introducing raiding to the game. It is true that there is not enough to do at endgame (this is for players who are looking for more than an “explore the world” experience when playing an MMORPG) , and Gw2 is definitely lacking in hard content.

Therefore, instead of addressing these problems by saying the game needs raids, I would like to propose another solution to the problem.

Introduce hard 5-10 man content to the game, in which bosses have more complicated mechanics and true understanding of the game is needed. Reward players with cosmetics only, but make these items hard to get (since beating the content will be hard in itself), so that they can truly be considered “trophies” for beating content that most mortals cannot beat. I believe that people will be motivated to do this content just for the prestige and the bragging rights.

No, there does not have to be a gear treadmill to address the issues of a lack of endgame content. There does not have to be raids. There does not have to be a grind. There just has to be some sort of hard content that players can strive to beat, not through the best stats on their gear, but by true understanding of the game, strategy, and teamwork. This does not at all go against Anet’s design philosophy, and in my opinion contributes to it by promoting more types of gamers to play their game.

Fractals were an attempt to implement the ideas I have stated, but don’t serve the purpose of pure hard content since they were made to include new players to the game and are not (even at high levels) hard enough to be a significant challenge to any competent player.

This game is severely lacking in challenge and competition, something that Guild Wars 2 needs to have longevity and keep its player base from going to other mmo’s. Although this game takes a slightly different approach to mmorpg’s the fact remains, it is still an mmorpg, and so it still needs those hardcore players and those who play the game for long periods of time (rather than trusting their success to a revolving door in which players leave and new ones come in) in order to survive in a market that is constantly becoming more competitive.

TL;DR: Guild wars 2 caters too much to the casual player. It lacks hard content. Raids, nor the grinding of gear that comes with it, is not the solution to this. Introduce extremely challenging 5-10 man dungeons in which players must use understanding of the game, teamwork, and strategy and the few players that complete this are rewarded with prestige items. This will give players something to strive for and will definitely help with the longevity of the game.

The game is great. But it has the potential to become something amazing.

I’ve never experienced it not being able to break stuns..you were probably immobilized and since that is a condition, not a stun or a daze, it did not work.
Also if youre using it to escape..turn around first..then use it.
When used properly lightning reflexes is one of the best skills the ranger has…an evade, long leap backwards and vigor all on a fairly short cooldown.

For solo roaming those are the best weapon sets to use imo. If you are running with a zerg you might want to switch to shortbow for seige and keep defense.
Its mostly personal preference for your playstyle though..just make sure you have at least a sword and a torch on either of the weapon sets. (Or together, if youre using shortbow)

Decently Evil.9648

Apothecary gear is definetely the besy for this type of build. (Healing, conditon damage, toughness). Its extremely expensive though so unless you can afford to dish out a couple hundred gold, mix and match with cleric’s and rabid or carrion.
Or just go with full clerics or soldiers armour anf clerics trinckets. Direct damage can be almost as good as conditions with this kind of tanky/healing and beastmaster build.

Decently Evil.9648

can you be more specific? what are you stats for each build?
From what you’ve said so far, i’d say build B. Empathic bond is nice, but unreliable, and conditions are much less of a problem than many people think. If you know you are going to be in a condition damage heavy situation in a dungeon, then just take signet of renewal.

Berserker sword ranger viable?

Berserker sword ranger viable?

Decently Evil.9648

Hey guys,

I was wondering what you think about the viability of a direct damage DPS crit sword ranger in PvE build that have just started using (wvw, dungeons). It has some survivability mixed in of course but not the condition damage/evasion tank build that ive seen floating around on the forums. It also has good syngery with pets (raven and drakehound/stalker) and can constantly maintain at least 5 stacks of might on the pet. I switch to longbow whenever i need aoe or to use rapid fire.

Sword/WH and LB

20/25/10/0/15

The 20 in marksmanship is for piercing arrows when AoE is needed.

Lightning reflexes/QZ/signet of renewal or hunt

Stats:

~2100 power
1775 precision (45 crit chance, 60 crit damage)
~1400 toughness
1150 vitality

Steal life on crit sigil for warhorn for some extra survivability

Is this viable or will i be too squishy? Keep in mind the evades on the sword and the sigil for lifestealing and the fact that i can switch to LB for particularly hard boss fights.

Feedback would be much appreciated

I -love- the sword #1.

Sword auto is not only the best ranger DPS, in my opinion it is the best sustained DPS in the game. Notice the word sustained; other classes may have better burst with bigger numbers, but over a longer period of time, ranger sword is king.

Trap Build really not doing that bad in spvp/tpvp

Decently Evil.9648

Is it ok to run a trap build in pve or spvp with power/precision stats?
Just the frost and flame traps since frost has nothing to do with condition damage and flame doesn’t scale well with condition damage anyway and still does decent damage at base condition damage. (Also makes a fire combo field)
Or is this a complete waste?
I was thinking of trying it with my greatsword..lay down the traps, leap in with my 3 skill

The Problem is NOT the Shortbow...it's everything else

in Ranger

Decently Evil.9648

(Note: If you do not want to read a wall of text, feel free to scroll down and see the TL;DR at the bottom )
Before the shortbow nerf, at least 75% of rangers were using shortbow as their primary weapon. This is not because the shortbow was so OP, it’s because every other weapon set was vastly inferior (some of the ranger’s off-hand weapons are great, but their main hand weapons are mediocre at best)

Now that Anet has nerfed the ranger’s only effective weapon set, everyone, and i don’t blame them, is getting angry. These days, even if you build a ranger to full DPS, it’s damage will still be much less than any other profession’s DPS build (excluding guardian, but they make up for it with amazing support/survivability, and necro, which is a class that needs to be worked on too IMO)

Anet might say “well ranger’s have pets which hit hard so having low damage weapon sets balances this out”. This is true WHEN the pet’s actually hit something, but then pet’s can’t really hit anything unless it’s not moving.

So my suggestion to Anet is to either:

1. Fix the pets responsiveness/ability to attack moving targets. If they do this, then it will actually be true that pets damage balances out the low damaging weapons sets.

2. Buff the other mainhand weapons. Only small changes would really help.
Greatsword – Increase auto-attack damage by 10-20%. Honestly..this will make a world of difference.
Sword – FIX the animation that roots you. Maybe the damage on the autoattack could even be nerfed a bit then..
Longbow – Increase auto-attack damage by 7% on attacks from mid-range, 10% on attacks from close range. Again, just a small change since longbow is mostly useful for it’s cooldown abilities anyways.

Shortbow: I’m not even calling for a buff..it’s still a decent weapon.

These are all either small changes or bugs that can be fixed. If Anet would make some other weapon sets viable and fix the pets, the ranger would become the great profession it’s supposed to be: A master of the wild, jack of all trades who can perform in any role: range, melee, support, DPS, tank/bunker.

TL;DR The reason why everyone is angry at the shortbow nerf is NOT because the shortbow has suddenly become a bad weapon, it’s because most of the other weapon sets, along with pets, are mediocre to borderline terrible. I suggest one of two things to Anet: Buff the other mainhand weapons or fix the pet’s responsiveness and ability to hit a moving target
