No love for being Melee

Guardians are one of the least mobile classes in the game, and there is a reason for this. Guardians give up mobility to make up for the fact that you can shoot them in the face for three minutes and they don’t die. If you had the mobility of a thief and still had 3400 armor..there would be an issue.

What class do you mainly play for sPvP, tPvP and WvWvW?

tPvP: thanks to not having any sort of MMR; most matches are blowouts, so I just pick one to play for a day.
sPvP: same as tPvP except I hardly ever do sPvP.
WvW: PvPvE never really appealed to me, so I haven’t done any yet.

Ignore the “omg go mesmer” crap. If you’re good at the professions you play, you’ll be sought out no matter what that profession is. If you’re looking to stand out and be noticed though, practice with elementalist. From my personal experience, thieves, warriors, and elementalists are a dime a dozen and 90% of them have no idea what they’re doing, particularly so with the elementalist. If you get good at it and do well, people will remember your name..atleast I know I remember the names of people that do well with the under-appreciated professions.

It is relevant as a sample size though. Obviously not everyone uses xfire, but not everyone fills out surveys that they get in the mail either. It doesn’t mean that the data is invalid, it just means that it is a sample that can be quantified using those averages.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people that have stopped playing until the rating system is introduced. This doesn’t really affect the well being of the game in the long run and I expect people will come back once everything is straightened out.

Also, while competitive gamers do love the tournament style of game play, it is exceptionally boring. With no rating system in place, any competitive team just runs out of reasons to play. I did nothing but tournaments for a long time now and its getting old. Every match you play ending at 500-200 isn’t really competitive or fun even if it is done in the tournament style of gameplay.

The game isn’t balanced around 8v8 hot join, which is one reason why it should be remade into 5v5. In a tournament(5v5) setting, necromancers are fine along with all the other professions.

What to do against a group of 5 guardians?

Condition damage kills guardians. No matter what they spec or how they build, condition damage will hurt them more than any other class. Stack bleeds and watch them drop because they can’t cleanse them fast enough.

As far as stomping them goes, if your team didn’t have a single stability buff to stop the knock backs..you had more than one problem from the gate.

The point of being able to steal is to add another layer of strategy. Would you rather send a few people to get Chief and know you’ll get it, or would you risk killing it slower alone? This choice is intentional. If you don’t like having them stolen then don’t take the risk of killing them solo.

Balance or Flavor of the Month?

It’s more FOTM than a balance issue. Lots of people don’t know how to stop them so people get the impression that they are unbalanced which isn’t true.

Very tired of double guardian/mesmer teams.....

Double guardian teams are easy to deal with. Condition damage tears them apart, even if they run smite condition with contemplation of purity..any decently built bleed setup can stack them 10x faster than they can cleanse them.

Mesmers are strong in 1v1, in a team fight situation they die just as easily as the other casters if you pay attention to which is the real one.

I find that, if anything, the one trick pony warrior builds (greatsword with frenzy) are lackluster at best. Against any sort of coordinated team, hundred blades is borderline useless.

If i see a warrior pop frenzy to hit me with hundred blades I just eat the damage while my thief friend steps behind and two shots him thanks to the 50% extra damage taken buff.

An Idea... Reduce Burst Damage

in PvP

Discordian.7906

The thing is, most people go full damage in 8v8 because they are rewarded for points and not for trying to win. I’m sure they’re cooking up some way to discourage that but even if they don’t you have to realize that 8v8 and 5v5 are basically two different games. PvP is balanced around 5v5 which takes things like fewer people and group synergy into account.

Find yourself some decent players, play some tournaments and see for yourself that burst isn’t really that big of an issue. Assuming everyone plays their profession well, the burst damage is high enough to be useful but low enough that counter play is available.

haha, good thread. 1+

All the noobs crying over Thieves and Mesmers are ridiculous.

Because its so ridiculously hard to tell that the mesmer who is dodging away is the real one or just target mark it prior to the clone spam. I also built glass cannon and died to a thief spamming one button, clearly the problem lies in poor balance.

On a more serious note, I think ANet struck an exceptional spot with PvP balance this early in the game’s lifespan.

People run around in a zerg in 8v8 because its faster to gain glory and rank that way currently with the scoring system, sucks but I’m sure it’ll be fixed. 5v5 tournaments can be great or a nightmare depending on who you play with. The lack of teamwork in both areas has nothing to do with this being GW2 or it’s particular brand of PvP, and everything to do with unskilled players and people that are new and have no idea what they’re doing yet.

I think it has more to do with the fact that currently, you can gain glory and rank points much faster by zerging and killing than you can by actually defending and trying to win.

Shortbows vs Longbows (ranger)

in Players Helping Players

Discordian.7906

Short bow seems to be the norm for tPvP, especially when paired with a condi epidemic necromancer. The ranger and necromancer stack bleeds on a single target, preferably one with a lot of boons; and the necromancer uses corrupt boon followed by epidemic to give any enemy nearby a fast 25 stacks of bleeding plus the condis caused by corrupt boon.

ITT: Glass cannon D/D elementalists complaining that a glass cannon Thief can burst them down in a few hits. Well ohemgee, it might be because Elementalists have the lowest health AND armor in the game, and on top of that you insist on going melee. Durr, you are going to get facerolled, its glaringly obvious. You deserve to lose, learn your weaknesses.

Also ITT: Gross exaggerations. 20k backstabs? Seriously? 7k heartseekers all in a row? Seriously? Absurd lol. Its not impossible, but you’d have to be buffed out the wazoo, get a guaranteed crit with ridiculous amounts of crit dmg, and activate assassins signet. Its not happening very often at all.

ITT continued: No one has figured out that vit+toughness >>> thief. If you can survive the burst, a spam thief is dead. Stealth abusers are the suckers you really have to worry about…as they can survive a drawn out fight. Naturally the only way to counter stealth is self-aoe, invuln skills, conditions (using a skill to remove them will break stealth, swiftness (if you’re faster he can’t backstab you), aegis (single-handedly breaks backstab thief), combo breakers (disrupts bursts), the list goes ON!

Yet all of these things would require you to stop trying to do as much dps as possible and add some survivability/defensive options. If you refuse to do that you deserve to lose

Most people don’t go for all around builds. It’s usually full glass or all tanky and no damage. I play a pretty well rounded shout guardian build most of the time, and I don’t remember the last time a thief killed me one on one.
