Soulbound

I must ask if you have either read the post or played Guild Wars 1. “Soulbound” items were called “Customized” in GW1 instead, along with some different and quite interesting mechanics.

The way it was designed removed the need for vertical progression in items. The request I had made would have been mostly a symbolic change, however, in order to preserve the old GW1 feeling regarding equipment.

It had nothing to do with economy.

It’s not fair to say it’s a copy; loot items (until now) didn’t souldbind when you picked them up. They were, universally, tradeable until someone decided to use it. This is a common sense defence against inflation.

Soulbinding a drop immediately when you pick it up, on the other hand, turns it into a rat-race gear-grabbing competition.

I am not against counter-inflaction measures.

Look at your signature, Rhyse. That is what I am talking about.

When I first saw the word “soulbound” on some items back in BWE1, I knew it all. And here you all thought I was out of my mind =p

Amazing how a single word can say so much, for back then, when I made such a simple request as to change the term “soulbound” back to “customized”, it was not a mere word change that I was proposing. It was actually a request for the developers to “stay true to their roots”.

However, unwillingness to acknowledge this meaningless request made clear that this game was intended for an audience other than Guild Wars 1 players, who happened to have built the core of ANet’s player base.

I am not saying that they shoulnd’t have expanded for other kinds of players. The only thing I am saying is that, if you believe in what you have achieved by your own, in your values and convictions, then you cannot fail.

However, if you try to distinguish yourself not by what makes you unique, but instead by trying to copy others’ recipes for success, then you have already failed.

A pity the developers did not believe in Guild Wars 1. Maybe there is still hope. Maybe not.

Flame away.

I have decided to give this Lost Shores event one last shot tomorrow. Too bad I already know the finale will be just another unplayable lagfest.

GW1 And GW2

We’re not going to rest on our laurels now. We started this company to innovate and bring players new experiences. Guild Wars 2 is the perfect game for Guild Wars players, but it’s not just the same game repeated again. We took this opportunity to question everything, and we have some exciting answers for you today.
The first thing you should know about Guild Wars 2 is that, this time around, there’s no question that it’s an MMORPG. It’s an enormous, persistent, living, social world, filled with a wide variety of combat and non-combat activities. There’s so much depth here that you’re never going to run out of new things to discover.
So if you love MMORPGs, you should check out Guild Wars 2. But if you hate traditional MMORPGs, then you should really check out Guild Wars 2. Because, like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun; and of course, it doesn’t have a monthly fee.

Need anything else to read?

Makes me wonder.

Name 1 fight in the entire game, that requires gear more so than good movement and utility selection.

BTW you got me on the agony thing.

Actually you just inspired me, naked lupicus run with level 80 weapons sometime this week lol full party.

I am anxious to see how you will have done. Do let us know, please. But I propose you run it with starting level 1 weapons, just for the sake of the weapon skills, since gear doesn’t matter.

Please post GMT times for future events?

Regardless of being easier to gear up, we still have to gear up every 10 levels. And about 2 or 3 times at 80.

Armor Versus Skill(s)

Indeed, a list of skills per weapon would really be a great addition, and I would love to see this implemented. But I will lie if I say that I am hopeful of this happening, for it seems the bias is to keep the gear progression coming. At least in the short term.

Gear progression doesn’t require skill. It just requires grind and spare time. As you pointed out, gear should be secondary, complementary to player skill, as gears are supposed to be tools, accessories.

It is most disappointing that I actually have to run dungeons for gear in GW2, or farm mats for gear. You also needed mats and gold for the level 20 armor in GW1, but you’d only need it once, and by the time you hit 20, you’d probably already have them.

And even then, with such low level cap and no gear progression at all, you would never be stagnant or bored for there was still much to do. I believe you remember well the feeling: “oh, I MUST have that elite skill” ~Goes through mountains and deserts after a boss to capture their elite~

The combat mechanics in GW2, however, does require some skill, and groups of really skilled players can do well without proper gear, even without voice chat coordination.

But then again, gear makes all the difference.

I completely agree with you. Besides, Guild Wars 2, supposedly being Guild Wars’ sequel, should respect its former player base better.

It shouldn’t be GW1, just also shouldn’t have strayed so far. In guild wars we had countless ways to customize our playstyle, and gear was just the cherry on the top of the cake, while in GW2, gear seems to be the cake itself.

You could spend a lot of time just thinking on the choices you could make in GW1, ranging from attributes, skills and armor upgrades.

In GW2, it is pretty straightforward: max this stat and period. Gear over skill.

Yes or No: Manifesto Represents the Game?

Guild Wars 2 is still very much like Guild Wars as far as gear goes.

GW1:

Make a new character in Tyria, do a few missions, grab a run to droks and you have a full set of perfect armor in a day.

Make a new character in Cantha, play the game normally you’re max level and wearing perfect armor within 8 hours.

Make a new character in Elona, ferry to consulate docks you have perfect armor in a few minutes.

GW2:

???

In GW1 the fun was in finding interesting builds and synergies between skills that normally don’t seem too useful by themselves. In GW2 there isn’t enough breathing room to be that creative.

In GW1, there also was a very deep and fluid storyline, which actually caused the world to change as you progressed though it.

Edit: No, by the way.

Legendary gear = grind, in the current state.
Grind = not for everyone, just for those who actually have spare time.

If I have 2 hours a day to log in and play, I’d rather be playing the game rather than farming over and over again.

Servers cannot support large events.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Eandur.8109

Eandur.8109

That’s about it. The servers cannot support the current amount of players all cluttered in a small area, such as what happened in the Halloween events, and now the Lost Shores event.

Many players, including myself, are virtually unable to do anything due to lag. The character models won’t load, the skills will take 10 to 30 seconds to respond. If you try to walk away, you will find your self teleporting back to where you were 15 seconds ago.

I believe everyone has experienced this at some points, which makes the gaming experience completely unenjoyable. And this happens to happen exactly in such “world changing” events (which for obvious reasons everyone want to take part, and even though it can also happen in some zergs).

Consequence: the world does change… but most players do not have the opportunity take part in the process. Or the do but at the cost of a painfully laggy experience and mostly unenjoyable.

I would like to point something out. We did have some large scale events in all BWEs:
In BWE1, the amount of lag made the game barely playable. And the finale was much like what we see in large events today.
In BWE2, with the addition of many extra servers, I for one haven’t experienced any lag at all. And although lot of people still went through connectivity issues, as I far as can remember, there was very few complaining in the Finale event with the spreading corruption stuff.
Finally, in BWE3, most issues were back, and they remain now that the game has gone live.

So, whatever it was decided to be done with the extra servers, it was not an improvement at all (it did improve from BWE1, but not from BWE2).

Some are going to reply that “I can’t compare the number of players in the Beta weekends with the number of players now.” That is correct. In this case, if the game couldn’t even hold the number of players in BWE3, it is rather obvious that it won’t hold now.

(At last, the suggestion. People too lazy to read can skip right to this part.)
It is for these reasons that I urge the developers to consider some of the following:
- Reduce the player limit within a map, and start sending them earlier to the overflow servers.
- Overflow server are currently suffering from the same issues, so also reduce the limit of players in each overflow server.

I’d also like to invite everyone to post out their own suggestions for improving performance, since in its current state, the game turns out to be unplayable in these large events.

Thank you.
