Are we sure it is the matchup system that is THE Problem!!
The last few weeks have seen some removing of the fixed positions were servers were stuck in a tier and had no prospect of change. Anet have done what so many asked for and shaken this about.
From Yaks Bend perspective and my own for that matter The first 4 weeks of the change we fantastic for us and we had some of the closest matches in the history of the game. I know that other servers did not have the same experience and we experienced it when we played DB a couple of weeks ago. Servers like EB BP showed they were up to and as good as the servers above them and yet under the old system this match would never have taken place. You would think that the moral boost would have been good for their server and for their future but it has not been. Why??
Middle tier servers have continued to bleed players/guilds to higher ranked servers. Yaks lost a number to TC SoR . I belive other mid/lower tier servers have experienced the same thing. I admit I have an alt account on TC and have yet to wvw much on there as I still fight for Yaks. This is sad as you now log in and there is no one to play with at certain times of the day. A few months ago to siege up Garrison for the Kain zerg that would come night after night was fun 10-15 tops 20 often 6-8 would bunker down and hold to the last man. So from a personal perspective what is going on.
WXP:- A great addition to the game that should have been here since day 1. However that is why people play now. Not to defend or have tactical play just grab as many points as they can. Where can they get those — points on a higher tier server. In EBG where the turnover is greater. The karma train. You get my drift. There are threads that cover this posted this week. The result of this is boring play for the greatest reward. Zerg Wars the meta game has become. Stack Buff Run Wheel press 1 and pick up your kills bags etc. Not rocket science.
Little or no defensive reward. Spend 2 hours on watergate watching, repair walls do upgrades. We used to do it for the server now tell me is there any point. You get no bags or return. Whilst I enjoy that aspect of the game and have spent my money on gems to fund it there is little or no point to it any more. It amazes me that you read in chat when the zerg returns to defend that there is no siege/supply. What did they expect when they left their borderland that 4-5 would tap siege run supply all at the same time. Nevermind taking back the camps that were flipped by 1 thief.
Tactical attack. If you do the trebbing cata work sometimes for quite some time what reward do you get. 40 wxp when the wall goes down and if you are really lucky you will get rewarded if the tower is taken. You get more than this killing 1 player that you pinged with an aoe. There are no badges either. So why would anyone do it when everyone else is zerg crazy picking up bags etc.
The ability to transfer up the tiers which are already stacked and complain of skill lag what is that I never see it on a borderland only in SM in a three way fight. Why in the world were the top servers not be locked or it cost more than a new copy of the game to transfer there. It is easy to hide behind numbers and get the rewards is it not.
The release of constant mini games every two weeks now get your wings here!!!. Yaks is a very PVE centric and as a result our ability to encourage them into WVW has diminished over the last month or so. This has added to the general lack of numbers in WVW. It is not about fair weathers as we have always fought with the same numbers but our militia is very absent as a result. As mentioned elsewhere new commanders who we don’t know doing their level best to hold things together. Go to lions arch and you are in over flow in many other parts of the map for that matter.
I bought GW2 for wvw and since the second beta weekend have done very little else. It has been a blast but I fear that unless some changes are made soon there will be 6 maybe 8 servers to wvw on.
Reward Defense—give more points the longer you hold something. Give even more points if it is upgraded. There are so many things that could be done with the scoring system to change the game play. Bring back the fire to the game not just throw a crust of minor improvements to skills every couple of weeks in the pretence they are making a difference.
So be careful not to blame the matchup system for the current state of wvw there are too many other things that affect it more.
