Fantom.9217

This is my first post on the GW2 forums in months.

I quit. The game is boring. I don’t want to grind your easy kitten PVE, ArenaNet. I wanted to PVP. I gave you MONTHS. And this is after following the development of your game for 5 years pre-release.

The PVP sucks. The scene is completely dead. The PVP mode sucks, the PVP maps suck, the PVP meta sucks, the PVP matchmaking (lolwut finally exists as hidden, still no ladder) sucks, the PVP spectating doesn’t exist, and the PVP practice (rent servers, private/custom games, etc) doesn’t exist.

Also the Mists is wayyyyy too segregated from the “real” game. This might be ok if we got equal attention, but PVE gets 99% of the updates and PVP gets a blog post full of empty promises every 3 months. You can’t even show off in town if you PVP, or earn experience OR gold.

Overall GW2 was the most disappointing game I have played since AoC, 5 years ago. Get your kitten together ArenaNet and maybe in a year you can start looking at the terrible, static meta your game has created. (What kind of PVP game has a team with multiple roles known only as “bunker”???)

The State of sPvP

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

The state of sPVP is that it’s dead and ArenaNet develops slower than Blizzard! I thought that was impossible but I guess not.

Balance is not what killed GW2 PVP. You’re being very shortsighted if you think an individual class’s balance had anything to do with the current state of GW2 PVP.

One class was always going to be more powerful than the rest. If GW2 had the core PVP features that were promised for launch implemented, then the player base would have been willing to wait out imbalances. Hell, if we had gotten them within the first 1-2 months, it would have been ok.

Now we hear that it’s going to be 2013 before we get basic PVP features like matchmaking??? Not to mention private/custom servers, spectator mode, and more PVP game types?

That’s just pathetic. Sorry ArenaNet, you should have put more people on the PVP team if you wanted to make this an esport. And you should have put more people on that team YEARS ago, if this is how long it takes you to code.

Honestly GW2 would have been better off delaying the launch in order to move the entire company onto PVP development, then launched in October/November. Instead they colored the Mists green. Priorities!

Please, have more of your team work on sPvP

Fantom.9217

ArenaNet has devoted about 7-10 people to sPvP development.

I am pretty sure that is incorrect. I can’t find the post but I remember seeing a list of people and teams working on things associated to sPvP shortly after the chris whitside incident where he said we only have 2 people working on this stuff. I don’t know the exact number and I don’t think the number was clear but I am fairly positive they have more than 10 people working on it.

EDIT: found it https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/The-teams-that-work-on-PvP-WvW-Balance/first#post821794 the list was people working on balance but I am still curious where you got your numbers of 7-10.

The only real developer/programmer that I’ve ever seen posting about PVP is Jonathan Sharp (and maybe Jon Peters occasionally).

2 people sounds about right for the speed at which they implement PVP bug fixes and content (matchmaking, custom servers, ladder, spectator mode, maps, modes).

It’s honestly pathetic, how do put 2 people on PVP and expect your game to be an esport? Do you expect us to be good and just keep playing the same old unranked content for a YEAR or however long it will take you to actually implement BASIC PVP FEATURES?

You need to cut the PVE staff and put them on PVP or just plain hire more people. This is unacceptable (and I’m not just saying that, look at how much your PVP player base has dwindled!).

THE LIST
matchmaking
ranking
custom arenas
leaderboards
spectator mode
daily and monthly tournaments
dueling
stats and scoring

And now we wait.

Been waiting for those since the first or second Beta Weekend.

Don’t hold your breath. ArenaNet has lost their opportunity to create a competitive PVP game in my opinion.

No one is going to come back to a game that they haven’t played in a year because features that should have been implemented at launch are FINALLY in place.

ArenaNet dropped the ball HARD with GW2. Shouldn’t have launched in August. Hell, if this is the pace that PVP features are being developed at, I’m not sure if GW2 should have been launched until 2013!

I don’t want to hear about how you can’t just throw more people at a problem, PVP in this game was (and continues to be) a CODE RED emergency. Once PVE was done (or at least in the state that it was on August 25th), EVERY SINGLE programmer, artist, and designer at ArenaNet needed to drop what they were doing and work on PVP.

There were (and are) no systems in place that they needed to learn, because we don’t have ladders, we don’t have matchmaking, we don’t have spectator mode, we don’t have private servers, we don’t have multiple game modes! They would have been starting from scratch, and any programmer worth his paycheck should have been able to help.

Then the game should have been launched in October or November, WITH core PVP features ALREADY implemented.

Seriously, what’s the point of even working on PVP features now if you don’t even have enough players to field one tournament at a time, let alone matchmaking that would sort teams by skill?

Sorry, ArenaNet. I was a huge fan, and I stuck with you for a LOT longer than I should have. But we have to move on, the PVP community can’t wait forever. And there are plenty of other games out there that are ACTUALLY COMPLETE. Competitive PVP players don’t just play MMOs, your competition had such a head start that slow as molasses development like this is SUICIDE.

Bye.

Paid tournaments: gems required to participate
WvW: no gems required to participate

From a business standpoint, it only makes sense to devote the majority of development resources to the profitable aspects of the game. I’m having a vision of empty WvW maps, and it’s a bit worrying.

We’ve seen countless other games with empty maps/zones because developers simply gave up on large scale pvp. I really hope that doesn’t happen to GW2.

Lol it’s not like sPVP is in good shape. It’s pretty much abandoned by Anet. The only thing they’ve managed to do so far is fix a few bugs and promise stuff that was announced pre-release (and that promise took 3 weeks to even be published).

In terms of actually adding CRUCIAL features that sPVP needs to survive… nothing.

Not sure why you are so hung up on a single weapon set, you should definitely not be playing warrior if you aren’t planning on using multiple weapons. The warrior has the most weapons to choose from of any class.

Also you should know that you aren’t going to be tanking kitten, even with a sword and board. That’s not how this game works. You’re just going to be dead weight (literally dead) if you try to just stand around in melee while kitten hits you in this game.

Anyway, if you want to be the most defensive class that you can be, roll Guardian.

The Zerg is the way to farm glory

Yup, I purposefully cap a point and leave immediately. It draws the enemy to the point that I just took and I can then run off to another point that they just left undefended and take it. And the cycle continues.

If you are farming glory then there is literally no reason to play smart or defend. It’s so sad.

I don’t understand why ArenaNet is ruining literally every legitimate sPVP game because of the fear of a few bots. Has anyone ever even seen a bot in sPVP? I play late at night, during the day, and in prime time. Never seen anyone that is botting.

All you need to do to fix botting is to introduce a report feature. There is NO EXCUSE for not rewarding defensive (i.e. smart) play. The current meta game is absurd, but until ANet changes it I’m going to zerg and ninja cap with the best of them.

Ladder/matchmaking/leaderboards are by far the #1 feature that is needed in this game. Frankly it’s pathetic that these features aren’t in the game and aren’t even going to be the next feature to be implemented.

How can you even have a PVP community if people don’t know who is out there? If they don’t have any way to judge their skill in relation to the player base as a whole? If you have no way to actually play against people that are on your level?

All the features and game modes in the world don’t matter if there is no community to actually play the game.

No one here is complaining about stat progression in PVP…. literally no one.

I have seen maybe 2 people ask for that in all the time that I’ve been following GW2. And they were both heavily shot down by the vast majority of the community.

The problem that the majority of the community has is that PVP is unfinished as hell, and that ArenaNet isn’t working fast enough.

I’m sorry, but you don’t get an endless pass on no feature implementation just because “you’re working on it.” There is a certain development speed that is expected in ANY project, software or otherwise. ArenaNet is NOT meeting that speed requirement right now.

edit:

What you don’t understand is that GW2 was likely not a good match for a great deal of those people.

People that want a ranking/ladder/leaderboard/matchmaking and spectator mode right now are NOT unsuited for GW2. Saying that this isn’t the game for them is absurd.

Please nerf quickness

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

Quickness is essential to this game’s survival as an esport.

GW2 needs MORE cooldowns like quickness, not less.

Cooldowns that force a reaction or punish a mistake are CRUCIAL for a competitive video game. Players must have tools that they can use to punish sloppy or slow enemy players.

Reaction time, APM, and decision making under pressure are 3 skills that quickness rewards, and slow/bunker play does not. Those are the types of skills that you MUST reward if you want to create a successful esport.

Mesmers and Thieves Nerfed October 7th Patch

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

Thieves and quickness are fine. They have counters, and honestly the game needs more cooldowns like quickness that you are forced to react to, not less.

Cooldowns that speed up the game or punish mistakes (like not having any outs) are perfect for GW2 as an esport.

I think almost every class should have access to quickness, tbh.

This pistol whip nerf is hilarious. I already didn’t die to thieves except 2v1 or right after a 1v1 when I had no health/cooldowns. Thieves are going to get phased out of the meta so fast once people realize that there are superior roamers out there. Glass cannon thieves are so squishy it isn’t even funny.

Bunkers or burst... is 'normal' a viable build too?

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

There’s nothing wrong with quickness or burst builds. So long as the enemy has an opportunity to respond and must make at least 1 mistake to die, short TTL is ideal from an esport perspective.

Short TTL means that you need high APM, great reaction time, and mistake-free decision making under pressure. Every esport AND regular sport is based on this philosophy.

Long TTL is boring, doesn’t require high APM, and allows you to recover from mistakes (i.e. sloppy play isn’t punished).

Who do you want to be at the top of your esport, DRG/MVP/MKP or Goody/Incontrol?

If you don’t like the enemy’s burst builds, copy him and use his own build against him.

Time to Live is my biggest issue with PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

I think fights in many cases go on TOO LONG, actually.

PVP should be fast-paced and punishing when you make a mistake. When you can live for minutes at a time, there is such a low skill cap. You can be lazy and slow and still live for forever.

Think about competitive FPS and RTS and Dota games. You die in .1 to 2 seconds in a normal shooter. This promotes constant awareness and extreme “twitch” skills. This gives the genre a high skill cap. This is the opposite of long TTL pvp in an MMO where you might be pressing as little as 1 button every 1.5 seconds.

When you think about RTS, you might think to say “what, games last 20+ minutes!” but remember that a player isn’t controlling a single unit. A good RTS player must spend as little time as possible on a single unit or engagement. APM is incredibly important, with good pros reaching 300+ APM. Everything is rapid fire, an engagement or harass must be responded to in seconds or you will lose. Again, this is the opposite of long TTL MMO PVP.

In Dota games, we have the comparison of Dota vs. LoL. In LoL the average nuke damage:HP ratio is much smaller than Dota’s, which promotes longer TTL. Also, towers (PVE) are much stronger and harder to penetrate, which promotes easy escaping. As a result, LoL games are often slower paced than Dota and have 20% of the players doing PVE (jungling) for the first 10-20 minutes. In comparison, a Dota game will often have players constantly ganking (roamers) or trying to engage right from the first minute. Fights and kill counts can be as high as 1/minute in some pro games, and everyone must be much more “on edge” due to the lack of a free blink and the existence of TP scrolls.

GW2 PVP can be even more slow paced than LoL, when everyone isn’t facerolling around in glass vs. glass fights. In fact it rewards this by being a king of the hill objective type!

If the developers want this game to become an esport, they need to make sure that kills can happen at any time, on ANYONE.

I’m not saying that they should make damage unavoidable, but a mistake needs to KILL you, and for that we need damage builds to be good.

Immobilize is actually stronger than a stun

sPvP point system is seriously flawed

in PvP

Posted by: Fantom.9217

Fantom.9217

I agree, but I don’t think a huge win bonus will change anything.

For one that ruins glory for the losing side, they’ll just start leaving halfway through, and anyone that gets auto-balanced will be annoyed too.

For another I don’ t think that will cure people of being upset when they sit defending a point the whole game and the guy running around neutralizing and killing gets more glory. Unless it’s something like 5000 for a win and 300 for being a killing machine, which would be absurd.

So putting aside win bonus, I completely agree. You need to remove skirmisher, I honestly don’t know what it means. It needs to be a reward for fighting on a neutral point when the enemy is there.

You also need to be rewarded for defense and for sticking on a point while in combat. This is BADLY needed.

kitten the AFK/botter argument, a simple report option can take care of extreme situations. Considering that because of the format of this objective mode being AFK on a point is a good thing, they have no right to complain when people do exactly that.

If you don’t fight back when an enemy shows up then you won’t keep the point very long, that balances other factors.

But because the only game mode is this king of the hill stuff, someone running to a point and standing there is perfect play.

Every class has a good spec in sPVP. I’ve played them all.

You need to figure out what the other classes do. You’re behind the curve right now, because there’s no real ladder system that will separate players based on skill level.

That means that you need to do prep work, lots and lots of prep work. Figure out how the other classes work, what their weaknesses are.

Make alts, spec and gear then out (customize!), then play with them in sPVP.

SC2 players don’t whine because they ARE getting something for playing. SC2 is an e-sport because it is well balanced. You play for rating, just like in WoW arena. I don’t see any such system beneath 5v5 in GW2. I was hoping there would be 3v3 arena and hopefully 2v2…

Do not compare Gw2 to WoW.

Arena pvp in Cata was tremendously unbalanced, and from what i understand, the same thing is occuring in MoP.

Yea but we aren’t playing Cata WoW or MoP WoW for that reason. What we want is for GW2 to give us that same reason why we played TBC WoW and WotLK WoW. A ranked ladder and fun PVP (arenas).

Blizzard ruined arenas in Cata, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t great PVP before that. GW2 was supposed to do even better, because WoW isn’t focused on PVP at all and GW2 is. GW2 has NOT delivered on that front so far.

I honestly don’t see anything wrong with a burst heavy meta. It’s not like anyone is stopping you from speccing burst, just mirror the other team if you’re so upset about how they spec.

Fast paced PVP requires much more skill than slow paced PVP where you’re in no danger of dying. Look at an FPS. It doesn’t take more than a second to kill someone in 99% of the FPS out there, and they’re considered some of the most competitive video games of all time.

Even an RTS like Starcraft is incredibly fast paced. The top players have literally 300+ actions per minute. How can you even hope to approach that skill cap in an MMO when fights are slow and take literally 60+ seconds to get a single kill?

And relying on king of the hill/capture modes is just a cop out. There’s nothing unskilled about being better than your opponent at a deathmatch, especially when you have access to exactly the same classes, skills, and stats as the enemy.

People that cling to “objective” as the only viable playstyle are just trying to cover up for sucking at direct conflict and not having the speed/reaction time/twitch skills to beat an enemy 1v1.

Currently, the camera is one of GW2’s weakest features, and unlike many other problems/bugs that need to be fixed, the camera is a persistent problem that exists for all players, at all times, from the moment they first log in until they log out. This persistent element alone makes fixing/altering the camera priority number-one for the majority of players. I personally feel that fixing the camera-related issues is the most important change Arena Net could possibly make at this time to ensure future success of this game. Making movement, and specifically the way the camera behaves, as natural as possible is the key to making the entire game feel right while making it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

No, I completely disagree. Please don’t talk as if you speak for me or “all players.”

The camera is perfectly fine except for maybe a few minor issues. I certainly am not bothered by it “at all times, from the moment I log in until I log out.”

And I absolutely don’t think that “fixing the camera-related issues is the most important change Arena Net could possibly make at this time to ensure future success of this game.”

Enough with the hyperbole, there are a TON of much bigger issues that need to be addressed before undergoing some kind of massive CAMERA rework.

And it’s your fault for not listening to what they had to say before the game launched. They said that this gear would take a long time to get VERY CLEARLY.

Devona’s Rest is no Kaineng, I’ll say that. We own even Kaineng in a normal matchmaking setup (until midnight at least). But really there are only 2 servers that we’re better than, Kaineng and Ferguson’s Crossing (together we’re the bottom 3 ranked WvW servers).

The problem is that the matchmaking recently started breaking us up instead of rematching us day after day. And now that the 1 week matches have started, we get kitten like this….

I really don’t think your matchmaking system is ready for weeklong battles, ArenaNet. This is the first day of WvW and it’s incredibly unlikely that anything will change over the next 144 hours. For one, DR has never been an offpeak server, that’s why we’re down at the bottom! So this point in time is actually when we’re STRONGEST. We had a good chunk of the map right when the battle started, hence the 20k points. But we don’t hold anything after midnight. So… what exactly are we supposed to be doing?

You don’t get kitten for a reward when you can’t cap anything, unbalanced maps just means you’re basically AFKing at your spawn.

Here’s a bonus screenshot, from our own borderlands. This was the sight that I saw when we had the nerve to take a mere supply camp that sits behind our own central keep:

This definitely need to happen. Especially since you don’t really see any new weapon skills past level 10 or so.
