Veterans of the Mists [redt] – Crystal Desert
(edited by Feldorn.6873)
I’ve just came back, looking to get into the swing of fractals and possibly the raid.
I’ve killed VG a few times, but was never able to do Gorseval.
Should note, I play late PST, like 9pm to 11pm when I can.

I’m interested. I’ve downed VG a few times but never got past that.
I play late PST which is usually pretty dead.
Only class I have ready (mostly) is PS Berserker, missing shoulders/gloves/boots.
I am interested in being a student.
I’ve full cleared AC and CoF, limited experience everywhere else.
Warrior main, with ranger and engineer geared.
Pacific Standard Time
@flow what kind of mix do you do? do you mix carrion and rampager?
right now, i’m in rabid, because i can get it for karma, and i had lots of that, but i’m willing to try out carrion in the future. do you mainly use staff for a weapon then?
are you running carrion gear and giver’s weapons?
i run similar gear to you, but am 0/20/20/0/30 right now and just pve on my ranger, perhaps i’ll give WvW a shot with a power ranger…
also, good to see that Moment of Clarity isn’t total garbage, i dropped it because i looked at my weapons and had 2 interrupts on 20 second (at least) timers when i run GS/SB.
I enjoyed the VoD and commentary though. thank you.
if you don’t feel like you need more precision for crit, why not do cavalier’s trinkets for crit damage, will probably scale better than the vit you’re getting from soldier.
also, everything seems to point to high toughness targets getting threat more often, so that could be a problem if you aren’t running AH for extra healing.

greatsword #5, rush, misses all the time too, like, you run into a pebble and you can’t get over it.
i use it, and run up to an enemy, but just keep running until the channel time is over. bull’s charge does the same.
no experience with frenzy.
i think that the duration bonus on the runes doesn’t currently work. this was with the latest patch.
from here.
i’d been looking at something like this: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-VRw;0B-sP-h0s57QFx0;9;4T;0T919A;405A5;0Ko0;3Co;42VM
a little less CD due to traits, but using 2 hoelbrak and 4 altruism runes, you stack might on yourself and your team. constant 15+ish for you, and 6 for your team. could also drop the 5 in firearms and grab HGH, but it looks like that will be overkill really, unless engineers can’t use sigil of battle.
i don’t like rampager’s. i’d go with knight’s, unless you really want to do CD, and if that’s the case, look at carrion or rabid, bot function slightly differently.
not really sure about runes, i’d almost go knight’s w/ melandru, unless.
though, if you aren’t solo roaming in wvw, defense probably isn’t that much of a priority for you. for small scale and skirmishing, you want the defense, imo.
I enjoy my engineer, but between the two, i’d totally roll guardian if you plan to duo.
engineer have some good party support by providing light healing and condition removal, the thrown elixirs drop some buffs, but hard to say what you’ll get. i think grenades are still their best damage option, but i don’t like them as much until lvl 60, bombs are fun, but easy to miss if things are moving around. i run static discharge build for leveling. you could potentially do a decent condition build with grenades too.
guardian can provide great uptime of protection or retaliation, as well as speccing for might to allies, shouts, vigor, and can gear with knights to help hold aggro on a monster. i don’t feel like you can really compare the two for support. i’d also favor the guardian on damage, using greatsword or hammer. greatsword pull is great to group up monsters to just rip apart, i think mesmer is the only other prof that can pull multiple mobs.
that said, i’d advise you to play the on you think looks the most fun.
@Hanzo the only flaw i see in your description is that good mesmers will immobilize before they burst with mind wrack. if you can cleanse that fast enough, you’re good, but can be hard to avoid the big burst.
if you can keep the clones down they’ll never get a good chance though.
Why are the Ranger traits for ‘bleed on crit’, and ‘pets gain might on crit’ only 1 second condition/boon duration?
Why does the trait ‘Fortifying Bond’ not give full duration of the boons the player gains?
in my experience, power with dagger/x and well of suffering/well of corruption are better for low level than conditions.
when i played MM, the pets were always on cooldown from being killed by rabbits, and condition wasn’t adequate without more survivability than i had at low level.
with power/wells, i can take out a gruop of 5 with both wells and life transfer.
though, if you’re set on those 2, i’d take condition over MM until you can get the MM traits.
well, if one is going to play engineer because they like that flavor the best, might as well put the best toppings on it too.
it has the same problem with the into the mists builder.
you’ll have to copy and paste them directly into the address bar, or if you use chrome, highlight it and click “go to: http://blah”
when i say, copy, i mean ctrl+c copy, not copy link address. it’s an issue with these forums.
true, but i would also totally use body shot if i were a thief, since i assume you’re talking main-hand pistol.
body shot >>> poison volley, unless you’re fighting the Cave Troll.
well, of course shortbow rangers spam 1. it’s the only skills that is worth spamming. i’m not digging on the shortbow weapons skills, i actually think they’re really good, but you won’t be using any of them on CD.
poison volley is good, though it’s best at melee ranger
3 is good for the extra evade and creating distance
4 is good for the cripple and some extra condition damage from pets
5 is great but the CD is too long IMO. even traited.
so, looking at that, the only thing they accomplished is to lower the overall DPS of a weapon for a profession that already has fairly low DPS. when i use shortbow, i still only use 1. i pop 2 now and then, and 3, 4, and 5 as the need arises.
though really, i played a ranger in GW1, i really should have expected they’d have no idea how to make it work, and nerf anything the class actually does well.
I’ve been planning out my build for when i get my engineer leveled up, and was looking at HGH Grenadier: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-VRw;2Z;0h0s57QFx0;9;4T;0T916A;419A5;1o0;3H70;35Bx is that a good build for running PvE content? mostly dungeons.
it should be able to keep up 9-10 stacks of might from elixirs easily, and then using a superior sigil of battle on an offhand weapon to stack up additional might. it requires a lot of micro though, which might lower the DPS compared to some builds with the time spent drinking/throwing elixirs, but you also help your team with the thrown H/B. the traits of course, can be changed depending on the content you’re doing, but i was looking at this as a base.
another build i was looking at was 30/0/0/20/20 since alchemy and tools just have a lot of fun traits, this could be an SD/grenade build as well, just hard to choose.
i agree with xenus, crossfire isn’t OP, it does poor direct damage and applies a bleed while flanking. i will grant that it is easy to achieve the flanking state, but that doesn’t make it OP.
i only use it when melee isn’t really an option though.
2. also not sure if serious, but when you say that big flashy numbers aren’t “DPS” then what is?
Many many small numbers.
Now I know what to call my bleeding stacks.
@Sleepy 2 things:
1. not sure if serious, but there are players with 5+ professions at 80 with exotic gear.
2. also not sure if serious, but when you say that big flashy numbers aren’t “DPS” then what is? many classes can drop this “burst” damage more often that a ranger can deliver similar damage, even with pet. our single target damage usually doesn’t even amount to what other professions can dish out in an area.
but really, i’m enjoying other profs while ANet irons out their vision of the ranger.
there is a thread on the GW2guru forums for a dungeon build, you should check it out.
the way the did armor, was berserker boots, gloves, shoulders, and knights, legs, chest, helm. they also split trinkets between knights/berserkers depening on the stats. then ruby orbs in everything.
longbow has uses, but isn’t worth it for the auto attack, use the cooldowns and switch weapons.
also, don’t mess with the 3rd skill, i think it’s the best of the 3… chill + weakness? yes please.
power axe, it honestly looks like you’re trolling, but i don’t think you are.
Didn’t see it mentioned, but crafting is also a way of obtaining a legendary weapon. you can craft some of the components that are needed for the forge.
it certainly feels like it’s mostly for experience though.
@LittleZoe I can see that you didn’t read the actual post…
i reckon it’s all personal preference. crafting is a decent source of levels, 10 per craft, and there may be an achievement associated with maxxing all 8 crafts on one character.
personally, i’ll spread it out, but i very well might max them all on my main character as well.
Looking to get your opinions on stacking up some condition damage and using shortbow or axe to keep some (~5) stacks of bleeding on a target.
For general PvE, would i be better served to just go for power/precision and deal more damage with my attacks?
I’m starting to think this would be better since normal mobs drop pretty quick and it takes quite a bit to get a decent amount of condition damage.
it happens with my jungle stalker, polar bear, and shark. basically, if it is a ranger pet, then you can see this exact behavior.
oh yea, also, my hyena.
