"DragonHunter" name feedback [merged]

Because it’s a pun or play on words, it should stop being taken so literally.

It’s just like this pun for gw2: what’s Queen Jennah’s favorite lunch spot? The Cafe Tyria.

Dragonhunter is just a play on words from Witchhunters and Demonhunters.

Names like Chronomancer, Druid weren’t argued over because they’re literal definitions.

Just replace Dragonhunter with Witchhunter and you can see the idea/concept of the profession makes sense.

It isn’t even remotely a pun or play on words. That would suggest it’s meant to be amusing and not taken literally. From the mouth of a developer, “Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent…Guardians fight for justice and the Dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions.”

They are very much in a literal way, a faction of guardians who have tasked themselves with the annihilation of all dragons.

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with that, but that’s exactly what they are.

I super can’t stand GW1. It’s very disappointing because I want to play it. I need to play it even. It’s the only way I’ll get a raccoon mini and I REALLY want that raccoon mini for my main. But it’s just so bad, and I can’t do it. It isn’t even that it’s hard, cause it really isn’t. It’s just bad.

I absolutely love GW1 but not gonna lie, it’s hard to do anything in it after playing GW2 so long. It can be frustrating not to be able to do something as simple as jumping. But I think if you put enough time into it, you’d get used to it and enjoy it on some level. How far did you get?

Obvious answer here. The question in the title seems to suggest that someone is surprised to find they are alone in something, while you might as well be asking “am I the only one who likes burgers?” Anyway, I’m hoping to lure back a friend or two with this expansion.

This would be a good time to do it. So much has changed already in the base game, and then with the expansion on top of that they’d have quite a bit to see and do.

Any idea how long ago they quit?

Part of comparing is pointing at similarities and differences. Saying we shouldn’t compare because they have differences makes no sense. But I’m not going to keep going on about this, this isn’t what the forum post is about and neither of us are going to change each other’s minds. We might as well be performing Who’s On First.

Just don’t tell people that they shouldn’t compare them. If people want to have a discussion about GW1 vs GW2 and so on, they’ve got no reason not to so long as they are respectful about it. There’s no reason to discourage that discussion.

I wouldn’t mind if they turned the player housing into some kind of floating Zephyrite balloon over Lions Arch if they wanted to avoid cluttering the ground with them. Like Wildstar. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind since they’re under the same company.

I am curious about this theory going around that Countess Anise is Livia being hidden from us by an illusion. Though I am not entirely certain what purpose there would be in her hiding behind an illusion (unless it’s really just to hide her identity so people don’t know she’s dabbling in some kind of possibly dark magic to stay alive for far too long), it is an interesting idea and would explain somewhat where she’s been. Also, Canach’s remarks about her age give some credit to that theory:

Canach: I have a thick skin. I also learn from my missteps. For example, you fooled me once with your illusions, so now I wonder if you’re truly as young as–
Countess Anise: Do not finish that sentence. Not here, not ever.
Canach: At least, a substantial response.
Countess Anise: Yes, well. You would be wise to remember your place and check that tongue of yours.

From the GW1 wiki about Dervish:

Among the Dervish’s most precious secrets is that of transformation. The Dervish, when roused, may channel divine powers and change their form temporarily to become the physical embodiment of a god.

That’s talking about becoming the avatars, which M.O.X. could also do. Says it’s a secret. If it weren’t a secret then why would they say it is?

And I am not saying that M.O.X. is alive or dead. I just don’t know why anyone would assume he is dead. It seems to make a lot of sense to me that something like him could very well still be alive, or be brought back to life. And he certainly wouldn’t have been dead for nearly 250 years. That’d basically mean right after GW1 was over he kicked the bucket.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I hope this expansion brings more of us vets back into the game and make this game somewhat bearable now.

The revenant will be interesting to play because it brings back some things from GW1. It’s not a mana bar exactly, but it kinda functions like one. And then there’s those sustain skills. And the fact that it’s similar to ritualist/dervish. It should be a lot of fun and really mix things up! I’m curious to see if the specializations will also do things like that.

Stronghold also. It’s not GvG exactly, but it can function in a similar way. They said they would have leaderboards for guilds in stronghold. I just hope that they aren’t like the other leaderboards, just slapped onto the GW2 site. I really am hoping we can get all the leaderboards integrated into the actual game someday!

It’ll be nice to have guild halls again too. I hope there’s as much variety as GW1 guild halls, but we will have to wait and see what they do.

You’re comparing them again…while telling people not to compare them.

compare
estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between.

Also GW1 is an MMORPG. They just deviated from some of the more traditional ways of doing things in certain areas, but it is still an MMORPG.

BOTTOM LINE, people compare things, including GW1 and GW2. It’s fine if you don’t like it, but don’t expect everyone to stop just because you don’t like it. It’s pretty cut-and-dried.

The opportunity for Templates

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Gandalf.3516

I think templates would be of extreme benefit to the entire community, not just stronghold or even pvp in general. I’ve been wanting templates since day one. Hopping between general pve, dungeons, WvW, and various other things, there may be times you’d rather not be using the build you have. For myself though, that’s easier said than done. I don’t remember builds at all, and even if I did remember them changing all your traits and so on is annoying. So I just stick with one build for PvE/WvW/dungeons in total, and then one build for pvp. Templates were extremely useful for saving, sharing, and creating builds and I don’t like not having them.

Dueling?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gandalf.3516

Gandalf.3516

Dueling with your PvE characters would solve everything except open world pvp (which I know won’t happen) This addition would add another dimension to PvP and further drive people to want better gear, be the best.

If you know it won’t be in PvE, then what’s wrong with how it’s done now? What purpose would there be in making it “official”? Go into the heart of the mists, join a custom dueling lobby, boom you’re done. What’s wrong with that?

The only way they could “officially” put dueling in the game that I think would be fun, while keeping it out of PvE, would be to put in in guild halls. Like, somewhere away from the main gathering area, have an arena where people can jump in together and duel, and guildies/guests who want to can sit there and watch and cheer their friends on. Of course that could also be a TERRIBLE idea lol.

(And as a note there is already ‘personal’ housing in the game but the system is very small, fairly out of the way, and the only options for customization or improvement are cash shop options)

I wouldn’t call the home instance personal housing at all. It’s not a house for one. You’ve got all kinds of random NPCs hanging out in it too, it’s pretty much a public area where anyone can go.

I wouldn’t call the various material nodes you can add to it customization either. Which means there’s no customization at all. However they aren’t JUST from the cash shop. We’ve had multiple nodes given to us through the living world, and you can also get some as really rare drops and buy them for gold in the market.

I don’t think Livia being alive is actually confirmed, it’s just that things seem to point in that direction (if it has been confirmed I never heard about it).

As we already said, just because he is added into the game doesn’t mean he will be “shoehorned in” and that it wouldn’t make any sense, IF done right. And the “he’s worn down” argument carries little weight in my mind. I won’t be broken up if we never see him again, I just think it would be cool.

An example I can think of off the top of my head (and just because I say this is an example of how he could be used, doesn’t mean it would actually work. I’m just coming up with ideas), is that as golems go, M.O.X. is pretty unique. He can actually attune himself to the human gods. How was he even able to do that? Dervishes could do it because they were humans, who worshiped the human gods and had strong connections with them. Exactly how they did it was a secret, and even if it weren’t that wouldn’t explain how M.O.X., a walking hunk of metal with no connection to the gods at all, could become their avatars. Humans might be cut off from the gods, but under M.O.X.’s circumstances who knows what he could do? With the theory going that the human gods are actually the dragons, or strongly connected to the dragons, he could maybe be used against the dragons in some interesting way, or used in something related to the ley lines.

I don’t think M.O.X. would have to take a role as central as someone like Destiny’s Edge, Destiny’s Edge 2.0 and so on. But he could have a secondary role. Name a Legend for your Revenant

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gandalf.3516

Gandalf.3516

These are ideas I’ve come up with of dead people we can channel as legends.

Old allies:
- Glint
- Gwen
- Pyre Fierceshot
- Master Togo
- Ventari
- Talon Silverwing (would be a cool little hint at future Tengu playable race)
- Koss
- Jora
- The Lost
- Oola
- Lightbringer Tybalt Leftpaw (cries)
- Wynne
- Kormir (she’s not literally dead, but she’s dead to me)
- Miku, queen of the fishnet

Old enemies:
- Shiro Tagachi
- Dagnar Stonepate
- Varesh Ossa
- Mercia the Smug or Optimus Caliph
- Svanir
- Undead Lich/ Vizier Khilbron
- The Great Destroyer

Other:
- Riannoc
- King Doric
- The Khan-Ur
- Elder Thruln, giant-king of the Jotun
- Turai Ossa
- Saint Viktor
- Archemorus
- Owl, spirit of the wild
- Jadoth
- Arachnia, dead spider god (can’t blame me for trying)

I also have an interesting idea that we could channel multiple people at once who are connected in some way. A random example being let’s say the Three Queens Alua, Elora and Ione (demi-goddesses of the Luxons) are dead. Then we could have a skill to channel not just one, but all 3 at once, as a legend. And interesting things could be done with something like that.

I don’t see why not when it comes to M.O.X. Livia lived all these years, and Ogden and many others, so why not a golem? He was probably one of the best golems ever built. And if you look at GW2 and possibly GW1, Asuran technology (and the technology of others) can last a pretty long time. In GW2 we have still functioning technology left by Gadd, Oola (actually Oola is still kind of around as a ghost according to the wiki), and let’s not forget the Iron Forgeman made an appearance in GW2 as well. And even if M.O.X. broke down, I’m sure he could be fixed.

I really hope we get to meet Razah again! And I think it would tie in well with the Revenant. What does everyone else think about that? For those who don’t know about “him,” Razah was an entity formed in the mists, who’s base class was Ritualist, and was an optional hero we could obtain in GW1. I will post his description at the very bottom.

The way I see it, introducing him could actually be pretty…Revenant relevant! Not to mention it would be another awesome throwback to GW1 (a lot of the Revenant is already a throwback to GW1, and we’re getting other cool stuff like GW1 dinosaurs). Who better to teach Rytlock how to wield the mists, than a creature spawned from and of the mists itself? He would also have some ties to Ogden (for one, they are both hundreds of years old and would’ve known each other since they both traveled with us, the player character). It would be cool to get the two of them together. And Razah would prove to be a valuable ally I’m sure. I was always fascinated with him.

Just to be clear, I am NOT suggesting we be able to use him as some kind of Revenant skill. I want him to be a character we get to meet and interact with. I don’t think it would make sense to be able to channel him as a skill because well…I don’t think he’d have died between GW1 and GW2.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Razah

“The protomatter that makes up the Mists strains toward creation, often spawning demonic creations in nightmarish forms. Not all creatures from the Mists are demonic, however. When the Mists come into contact with a suitable human template, for example, it can copy that form, creating a sentient entity with humanoid appearance and an almost human mind.

Razah is one such creation. It has sprung into being a fully-formed adult. It has the knowledge and capabilities of a human, but lacks common sense. As a result, it asks odd questions about human emotions, contemplates human motivations, and attempts to duplicate human mannerisms. Razah is a contradiction: more than human in some ways, and less than human in others. It needs an identity, a personality, and a purpose. Hopefully, it will find its purpose by working with a hero. Otherwise, it could degenerate into an abomination as monstrous and inhuman as its demonic brethren.

New Concept for HoT: Guild Alliances

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gandalf.3516

Gandalf.3516

Sure, you could all join each other’s guilds (at least, up to 5 guilds) but that isn’t even REMOTELY the same thing and doesn’t function well for an “alliance,” I wouldn’t call that an alliance at all.

One major thing you just said is alliance chat, which a lot of people miss. Alliance chat lets tons of people from, let’s say 5-10 guilds, all talk at once. It has a lot of benefits. Also you can easily go into each other’s guild halls. I’d say those two things alone make it MORE than worthwhile. It’s something that GW1 offered and has been very much missed. It allows for easier communication, and more interaction with other guilds that are similar to your own. And if you don’t like alliance chat? Turn it off, problem solved.

On top of that there’s plenty of other things they could add. They could add special alliance missions, or allow all guilds in an alliance to do guild missions together without having to join the other people’s guilds. They could add various things you can build that are specifically related to alliances and maybe each guild in the alliance has to contribute a certain amount to build it (alliance bank perhaps). They could allow for “trading” of influence points. Like if the other guild is short a few thousand for something, or it’s a pretty new and/or small guild, then you could give guilds in your alliance some of your own influence points. There’s a lot they can do to make it fun and useful.

New NPC race means not Hylek, and not Tengu. It is possible that IGN got that wrong, or Anet said it in a weird way, and that we’re just seeing another tribe of Hylek and Tengu. But I find that to be highly unlikely. I’m hoping for a new race to interact with, myself.

we have at least two brand new frog-like races shown in the first trailer. they could be different types of the same race, but point is, there is a new race of frog people, and in GW, the frogs get the mesoamerican names (hylek, heket, etc)

My point was that Hylek are an already existing race. We can’t have a new race, that are Hylek. New race of “frogmen?” Sure. New Hylek tribes? Sure. But not a new race of Hylek. That would be like…they add the Flame Legion to the list of playable legions, and then people say we are getting a new Charr race to play…

If one of them is the Heket, they’d be new to GW2 specifically, but not new to the series. I think it’d be cool to see Heket again, and whatever the other frog race is (Itzel or otherwise). I believe in the IGN article it actually said there will be multiple new races, however Itzel was the only one they named. Looking forward to seeing what they all are.

The large and skinny frogs in the trailer, could theoretically all be Heket (Heket gallery in link below). Also I am curious to see if any of them will be peaceful, in GW1 they were all very aggressive.

Phaerim makes a valid point regarding the norn. The norn accept Sons of Svanir as long as they aren’t currently causing problems – I can’t see them excluding sylvari because they might get corrupted by Mordremoth.

To be fair there is a rather large difference between Sylvari and Sons of Svanir.

The SoS requires them to willingly seek out the corruption (and most of them does seem to still keep their sanity), while Sylvari are basically being corrupted as soon as Mordremoth thinks about them without giving them a choice and with a rather clear loss of sanity.

Except we don’t know that. Actually, I’d say more likely we know that isn’t true. It might be safe to assume that the Nightmare is from Mordremoth. If that is true, Sylvari choose whether to join the Nightmare or not. Some are more susceptible to it than others, but so far we’ve seen nothing that suggests they don’t have a choice. Everything points to them being able to choose, from their history, to what we’ve learned in game, and even the video at the end of LS Season 2. Also if Sylvari don’t have a choice in becoming his minions, then that would present a large problem for them since Sylvari are a playable race.

And in response to the Sons of Svanir bit, they become more and more corrupted as time goes on. You could argue they are even more dangerous than the Nightmare Court because they are unpredictable. You have Sons of Svanir out there killing innocent people, you have sons of Svanir “playing nice” in Hoelbrak, and all of them sooner or later lose their minds and just become straight up icebrood. And the Norn continue to allow them to coexist in Hoelbrak. It’s safe to say the Norn wouldn’t treat Sylvari as outcasts or dangerous, simply for being Sylvari.

Griffons would be very cool. There’s a lot of cool ranger pets they could add really, things already in the game that we can’t actually tame. Drakes, basilisks, bats, dolphins, dolyak, fleshreavers, fish, crabs, triops, sea scorpions, griffons, pinipals, insects, minotaurs, oozes, thorn wolves, raptors, sea turtles, skale, skelk, wind riders.

The risen chicken Twitchy shows that we can liberate elder dragon minions. That could present some cool ranger pets. Branded, risen, destroyers, icebrood…minions of every dragon really.

I think they also missed an opportunity with the living story, and the maps that come with it. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could get some special twisted pet? Or a little karka pet? How about a giant spotted beetle? Build your own steam creature, anyone?

I want to have access to our home instance through a building in the GH. Kind of a home-away-from-home instance.

@Brother Grimm Guild Halls naturally de-populate areas just by existing. In GW1, so many people would just sit in the GH and socialize or AFK. Some people even did more of that than actually playing the game. And the GH is a favorite place to hold events. So I’d say it would make sense to add stuff like crafting stations and such. If GH socializers take up crafting, then they’ll have to leave to get more materials lol.

Two more were announced today in an IGN interview. Mushroom jumping, and unlocking the language of a new NPC race, the Itzel, in order to unlock things like vendors/special combat abilities/collections (and it sounds like maybe lore too?).

They said/showed some other interesting stuff in the IGN article too. Screenshots and new footage.

Maybe a feature pack will add it. I believe they are going to add feature packs between now and HoT.

"Suggestion" GW2 Dueling

Generally, refusing to add a feature because of the toxic minority is a bad argument. By that mentality, not adding text chat would be a great feature.

We both know those are two extremely different things. I can see why they don’t want to add dueling. Every MMO I’ve played that includes dueling, gets really frustrating for people who don’t WANT to duel. If people really want to duel, there’s groups that meet up in WvW and PvP for that.

Need more than 1 Specialization to make sense

A single specialization per class isn’t any choice, it’s a single path to try. I realize the plan is to add more specializations as they go but for a specialization system to feel like you have any choice (and they said in an interview that it’s to feel more like a second profession) that each class should have at least 2 specializations to choose from to start.

You do have a choice. Two in fact. To specialize in something, or stay as your base class. And you will get more choices in the future.

@Dante agreed. I decided not to write a post addressing that though…would’ve been too long. :P
