I liked her in LS1 despite her Scarlet fangirling, then she just kept getting more selfish and obnoxious, putting people in danger for the sake of showing off her Brilliant Solutions to Everything. The last straw for me was when she decided going to Rata Novus was more important than rescuing the captives from Mordremoth. I wouldn’t mind if the next thing she gets put into is a dragon’s mouth.

Here’s a cool story, during Halloween 2012 a dev was hanging out in LA. When asked why there was no Trahearne mini, they said “Why would you want one, so you can murder it?” That’s still the only Anet employee response I’ve seen on the subject. :)))) (Edit to be clear: I don’t agree with the dev, I was saying “cool” sarcastically)

I’d still like a mini Trahearne, of course, but I don’t really expect to ever see one.

The fix didn’t work for my character, either. His hair still looks like the right picture in my previous post. In case you need specifics, the accessory color is “stream” and the base hair color is “amethyst.”

Edit: Sorry, the fix did work. The character select screen and kit previews are still messed up, but his hair is the correct color in-game again.

How about Trahearne's memorial?

in Living World

Gomoratoad.9867

tbh I wasn’t expecting anything elaborate since the character was neglected after the Zhaitan story, but I didn’t think there would be literally nothing besides a few lines of dialogue, one of which was an insult. “Getting himself killed,” really? Couldn’t Almorra say something less inflammatory, like “We were sorry to lose Marshal Trahearne and don’t want that to happen again?”

The AMA responses don’t make sense given what we see in the game, like the PC being closer to Eir – sure you spend time with her son, but unless you’re a norn, you barely see her. Everyone befriends Trahearne, builds the Pact and weakens Zhaitan with him, helps him finish the thing he’s been struggling with his entire life, but I guess none of that is important. Pacing is used as an excuse again. Pacing is supposedly why sylvari lore was cut from the sylvari dragon story, now it’s why we can’t have two memorials. If pacing doesn’t allow proper closure for the death of an important character, maybe don’t kill off the character? And of course some of the dev responses were jokes about salad bars and hedges – thanks, that’s exactly what the fanbase needed while trying to find out why this character we like is treated like garbage.

It’s possible that something else will be done in time, but the reddit thread made it sound like this is it. And really, it’s ridiculous to be in this situation, hoping that maybe after a year we will get actual closure for the shoehorned death of a major character.

Mordremoth’s Ley Storm (the push/pull whirlwind) persists into the final flight phase and will pull you out of the air. This has happened every time I’ve done the fight within the past month.

Once again, the “finish” option for Mord did not appear for my groupmate. (I was the instance owner and in the penalty box, I was also playing a charr, so never mind what I suggested about sylvari a few posts back.) Fortunately I got ported back into the arena as Mord was downed, so I was able to finish him myself. I don’t know if that was a fix or some sort of beneficial bug, it would be cool if it always happened though.

Blighted illusions still don’t wipe conditions when they get stunned. New conditions won’t apply, but if they already have a large stack on them, they’re still at risk of ticking to death before being turned by the rifts.

My partner and I had the green exit portals throughout the whole quest when we did it a few days ago, resulting in constant “Exit to Dragon’s Stand” prompts popping up mid-combat. There was one in each stage of the quest – the beginning hallway, both miniboss arenas, Mord’s arena, one even spawned on top of Trahearne at the end. This may have happened because my partner just joined me but didn’t choose to replay the quest step in his journal, but I’m not really sure. I don’t know why this is coded to happen under any circumstances though, pretty sure nobody actually wants or needs an exit portal in the middle of a boss fight.

The “finish” option for Mordremoth can still fail to appear for party members if the instance owner is in the penalty box. I have no idea if it’s relevant, but since bugs are frequently silly I’ll mention it just in case – both times I’ve had this bug happen, the instance owner was a sylvari.

I’d replace scribe with something like Everquest 2’s carpenters. They can craft a ton of furniture for reasonable coin & material costs, and they’re not tied to guildhalls, so the items can be sold/traded/used in personal housing.

If we’re talking about combat professions, some sort of bard class/spec could be interesting.

- Trahearne
- Sieran
- Forgal
- Shatterer (should be a drop from its chest, like Mini Teq is)
- Claw of Jormag (same as above)
- Marsh drake (we have all the drake types except this one I think)
- Trahearne

kinda weird that we have a mini of the jerk from the human commoner story that torches a hospital and orphanage, but nothing for some of the main/popular characters. If we’re gonna get minis of characters that only appear in a single racial story, can we at least get one of Malyck?

1) When the player has no say in a character’s emotions it isn’t truly his character. Dev’s should not decide who a PC considers to be a friend, what he likes, who he dislikes, etc.

2) Failing to save him implies an attempt or inclination to do so. In game play showed him to be actively working to help the dragons. Why would anyone want to save a character who is actively working for the enemy?

I realize everyone has their own personal canon for their characters, which may not follow the story exactly, or at all. When I say canonically, I mean the story as it actually plays out in the game. In that case, the PC wants to save Trahearne because he is important to them. He’s a friend, and the Pact leader. Rescuing him and DE is their main motivation for wandering through the jungle. So when the PC emphasizes the need to save Trahearne repeatedly, then ends up killing him instead, I consider it a pretty big failure.

I’m confused about how Trahearne was actively helping the dragons. He helped create, and led, an organization designed to stop the dragons.

Imo, Trahearne should have become a Champion/Avatar of Mordremoth and we should have had to kill him in the end.

Instead, he remains as Treesus.

It’s almost like they’re afraid of giving him a personality.

He had a personality, he was just more introverted and subtle than the standard Surly Toughguy or Zany Goofball types. In Season 2 he became more confident and outgoing, and angry at Mordremoth. I was interested to see how that would play out in HoT. Instead he gets five minutes of screentime where he whips out some convenient Plot Magic to save the day (y’know, a thing people disliked in the original PS), and dies. Exciting!

I have zero enthusiasm for the story after that “ending,” which catered to people who hated a humble, kind-hearted protagonist. Like it or not, that was canonically your character’s friend and boss, and you failed to save him. Congratulations, Commander Screwup. Please have this visible and conveniently linkable spoiler as your reward.

Anyway. Positive feedback about Trahearne doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on anything, so I’m just going to low-effort this and say I completely agree with the OP and everyone who has similar views.

Tried to finish this quest (normal mode) and encountered the following fun bugs:

-Updrafts were still failing to launch me unless I ran into them several times.

-Blighted allies were vanishing into their rifts instead of turning friendly, leaving Mordremoth permanently buffed and immune to damage. First it happened with the mentor (Tybalt in this case), on my second attempt it happened with Marjory. I was using a condition build, so it’s possible that they died from condition ticks before they could fully turn, as Nilix mentioned earlier in this thread.

-I finally got to the end where Mordremoth needs to be broken & stunned by the rift. I did that, and got him to a sliver of health. He ended up dying right as he became unstunned and went back into the rift phase, and his body disappeared. There was nothing I could do at that point but leave the instance. This was only my second time doing this quest, so I have no idea if Mord’s disappearing act is a common bug, or if it just happened due to the timing of his death and recovery being so close together.

Gomoratoad.9867

The Trahearne death is a response to the metric ton of threads within the first months of the game complaining about Trahearne being the hero and not the player and his annoying VO as well. Very many players expressed desire to engage him in combat and “pwn him”. It finally happened now.

Yeah, and many also said they liked him and his place in the PS, and some said they would like him more if he was given more development. It’s really sad that the only feedback that seemed to be considered is the “let me kill him and give me his my sword” ragefest.

The story left me with the same questions as the OP, and I have yet to see a satisfying answer to any of them. Additionally (brace yourselves for text walls):

-Where was the Nightmare Court? The PC asks why Mord is locking so many up, but we only see two in the story (and a free one in Dragon’s Stand). And then we get no information, no NMC plot at all, because Faolain decides that being eeeevil and turning both our group and Mord against her was a better idea than allying with us for her own benefit. And why was she imprisoned with Eir? Why was Eir not with the rest of DE? Is there an actual reason besides setting them both up to die early?

-What is the Dream? It’s supposedly unique to the Pale Tree’s kids, and beneficial to them, but then… it’s also the home of Mord’s mind? How does that work? How did we just teleport our minds into it, when previously it was only accessed by non-sylvari/awakened sylvari via an actual portal that sent them wholly into it? Do the rifts have an explanation or are they just game mechanics?

-Why is the Elder Dragon of Mind such a dolt? He leads us right to his heart by baiting us with Faolizard and then dragging Trahearne in there while we watch. The only resistance inside is a small group of standard mordrem enemies. Mordremoth hears us figure out his weakness and our plan to exploit it, but then does nothing to stop us. I know he was distracted by the assault outside, but if he can just regrow his body, why didn’t he prioritize protecting his mind? Why did he make us aware of the seed he left in Trahearne instead of hiding and regrowing later? And why didn’t he plant seeds in any of his other minions, as a backup plan?

-Not really a plot question, but what was wrong with giving us a somewhat happy ending? Was the story not bleak enough already? I didn’t expect another huge party, but it would’ve been nice to actually rescue our friends after 15 chapters of babbling about it (and sabotaging our own efforts by taking detours), and have a small celebration/memorial afterwards. Instead, I felt like a failure. The triumph over Mord’s mind was meaningless because he just jumped into someone else. I had to euthanize my friend and the leader of the friggin dragon slaying organization, and nobody cares, not even his sister. And if Laranthir’s dialogue in Dragon’s Stand is canon, then even killing Mordrahearne did nothing because the Mouth still regrows and causes trouble. Did we actually accomplish anything?

The HoT story was the perfect time to answer lingering questions about sylvari and pick up old plot threads like Malyck, but that was shoved aside so we could screw around with the egg and a dead asura city, two detours that completely nullified the sense of urgency we were supposed to feel (and this “urgency” was the reason given for the brevity/pacing of the story). So we’re left with even more unanswered questions, no new information, and fewer sources of potential sylvari lore, since two important sylvari characters were killed off with almost no screentime and zero development.

The Dragons "Weaknesses" spoilers

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gomoratoad.9867

Gomoratoad.9867

Mordremoth’s real weakness was his love for Trehearne, and his desire to bond with the object of his affection.

This honestly makes more sense than the actual story

The whole A Weakness plot point doesn’t bother me, but the way it was introduced was underwhelming. The Rata Novus detour was already annoying since there was supposed to be a “sense of urgency” to rescue our friends, and it was made worse by the fact that we didn’t learn anything useful. We already knew dragons had weaknesses and could be killed… because we killed one.

It’s understandable that the Rata Novans didn’t know the specific weaknesses, but they could’ve at least been hinted at, like “our research indicates this dragon is friggin huge so attacking its body probably isn’t an option,” and/or “maybe a dragon’s connection to its minions can be used against it.” Something beyond “yeah they can be killed but we dunno how, lol.” Then it would’ve been less of a butt-pull at the end when we’re suddenly like OH I KNOW LET’S ATTACK THE MIND DRAGON’S MIND, and Trahearne magically gains the ability to teleport our brains into Mord’s, while Mord gets huffy but does nothing to stop it.

So... About that ending... [SPOILERS]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gomoratoad.9867

Gomoratoad.9867

Yeah, it was really underwhelming and disappointing, especially after the celebration we got for killing Zhaitan. Unless there’s something else nobody has found yet, the only thing you can do after getting spit back out to Dragon’s Stand (somehow unharmed by the massive explosion) is talk to the NPCs at the top of the spiral, who don’t even say a word about the canonically devastating thing you were forced to do. You can also fight Mord’s body if you do the whole Dragon’s Stand event. It still doesn’t give you a proper epilogue or closure, but it lets you see what was happening outside while you were fighting Mord’s mind in the story instance.

The players saying they want to leave the game over pixel sadness continues to be the most absurd thing Ive seen in an MMO community.

It’s not just pixel sadness, it’s the fact that I have to give up on my favorite part of the game (the story) because the writers still insist on using needless deaths to create needless drama. Look at how much they love to remind us about the dead Order mentors. It doesn’t motivate me, it makes me frustrated at the loss of potential character development in future stories, and unwilling to care too much about other characters, knowing they’ll probably get killed off too. The death wasn’t the only thing that bothered me about the story either, it’s just the thing that finally made me say screw it, this is a lost cause.

How was that “ending” supposed to make anyone feel victorious, anyway? The PC failed their mission to save their friend, it ends with a heartbreaking moment and a cliffhanger. Imagine Zhaitan grabbing the airship as he fell from the tower, bringing it down and killing/injuring everyone on board. Then the quest completion rewards pop up. That’s basically what we got with HoT. It’s like it was designed so the only people who’d feel satisfaction are those who wanted to kill one of the writers’ protagonist characters, and that’s backwards and sad.

And yeah, part of it is pixel sadness. Trahearne was a character that people with introverted personalities, depression, etc. could relate to (Eir was another, welp) and it sucks to lose that representation. I understand that every character will not appeal to every player, but I’d rather ignore the ones that grate me, or ideally let them grow on me, than see them removed from the story completely.

The Trahearne hate bandwagon continues to be the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen in an MMO community. If you actually pay attention to the story (and consider the technical limitations) you’d understand why your character couldn’t become the Pact’s leader, and why your sylvari wasn’t entitled to the sword. Trahearne’s wyld hunt only plays a big part because it helps to weaken Zhaitan. He and your character are meant to be partners, helping each other overcome their problems. You are frequently praised by NPCs (including Trahearne himself) for your actions – Trahearne receiving some praise does not negate that. And if you replay the story since the voice acting changes, you’ll see that many lines have been changed to shift even more praise off him and onto your character.

To answer the original question: I have been playing since launch and this is the most unhappy I’ve ever been with the game. One of the HoT story goals repeated over and over is “I have to rescue Trahearne” and being denied that at the very end felt completely awful. Killing Mordremoth should’ve been enough. The extra “twist” causing Trahearne’s death was unnecessary, and until I see a reasonable explanation for it, I will assume it was done just to appease the people who hated him. Meanwhile, as someone who primarily enjoys the story/PVE stuff, the whole expansion has pretty much been ruined for me. I have no incentive to replay the story and watch him suffer and die again. I can’t enjoy the overland maps because of how they’re linked to the story that made me feel so crushed. Everything feels completely pointless, because I know there’s ultimately nothing I can do to save the character that was built up to be my partner and friend for three years. It’s like a whole expansion of Claw Island.

TL;DR – Trahearne’s death is honestly the biggest disappointment I’ve had in any game, and my interest in the current and future expansions died with him.

Did [SPOILER] deserve better?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gomoratoad.9867

Gomoratoad.9867

Yeah, he absolutely deserved better. I enjoyed his partnership in the Zhaitan story and I was looking forward to doing more with him. But nah, let’s take Tyria’s poster child for depression and torture him to the point that he needs to be mercy killed. It was legitimately nauseating and ruined my interest in the story. I’d really like to know why the writers felt he needed to be killed off, because it honestly just seems like pandering to the people who complain about him stealing their glory while ignoring the tons of praise NPCs (including Trahearne) heap on their character.

Gomoratoad.9867

I’m extremely disappointed by Trahearne’s death. He was actually liked by many people. He was relatable and important to some of us who deal with things like depression and social awkwardness. I feel like he had a lot of potential to grow even more as a character, and I thought you were working towards that when he finally made his reappearance in the living story, but then you didn’t even let him do anything besides show up and die in the first expansion of the game. Barely any dialogue, no chance to get the revenge he wanted for the Pale Tree, just a sad ending for a character who had already suffered so much. And you didn’t just kill him, you tortured him and forced us to kill him, and I can’t help but feel like you did it at least partly to appease the crowd who wrongly accused him of “stealing their glory” in the original story. I don’t know who else was meant to be satisfied by an ending that consisted only of his death and a cliffhanger cutscene. I realize there will be more story updates in the future, but it still feels awful to just be left with no sort of closure until then.

The sad thing is, I thought the rest of the expansion was excellent. The art and music are great, new lore and events are interesting, I loved the return of character voices and old PS characters, and I enjoyed the rest of the story (minus Eir’s death, which also bothered me). I played it as a sylvari and the extra interactions between my character, Mordremoth, and Canach were a great feature. But seeing Trahearne fall to this “plot twist” (which was sadly predictable but I hoped you wouldn’t take the predictable route), after fighting so hard thinking I could save him, was so upsetting that I cannot find any desire to play at all anymore.

My Greatest Fear Plotline

I can also confirm that the greatest fear storyline does not show up for characters who were not already on those steps. I had a character stopped at Battle of Claw Island prior to the patch, so I just went from there all the way to Victory or Death, and the fear quests never happened. I was able to choose a fear at the end of A Light in the Darkness, and I chose the dishonored/Syska path. But at the beginning of Temple of the Forgotten God, Trahearne was talking about Tonn and Ceera instead, so it seems your choice no longer matters and is probably just obsolete text that wasn’t removed.

The cuts seem like a huge waste of work and content, and the re-ordering of steps creates a ton of continuity issues and ridiculous situations within the story. I’m very disappointed and baffled by these changes, and I hope they’ll be reverted.

I think I encountered the same bug as the OP, with the Risen Plaguebearer/Preserver/Corrupter at the beginning of the instance. My damage numbers were super low, but only while I was between the first few quest objectives. Once I moved forward enough to update to the next objective, they returned to normal. Kinda hard to explain, but it went something like this:

1) I entered the instance, did the cutscene with Trahearne. The quest objective became “Gather additional Pact soldiers along the way.”

2) I attacked the first Risen, but my damage on it was abnormally low. While still fighting it, I moved forward until Trahearne said “Follow us” and the objective updated to “Recruit the Pact soldiers at Lyssa’s temple.” My damage numbers then went back to normal.

3) Same deal with the two Risen at the top of the ramp – my damage on them was low until I got close enough for Trahearne to speak and the objective to update to “Enter the temple of Lyssa,” then my damage went back to normal.

Really weird. I wasn’t able to reproduce it anywhere else in the instance, it was only an issue with those first three Risen/quest objectives.

I don’t think Tybs would really be the best choice for a birthday gift, since as others have mentioned, some people don’t have a connection to him. Just as Jennah was (IMO) an odd choice since some don’t care about her. I think it would’ve been better to tie those minis to more appropriate events – the Jennah one could’ve been a reward for one of the latest living story achievements, and a mini of your Order mentor could be a reward for finishing the Claw Island quest.

For the birthday gift, I’d rather have the GW1 style random mini so there’s a little surprise, although perhaps keep them all the same rarity and tradeable so nobody feels cheated or stuck with something they don’t want.

It seems pretty lame to say "Okay, here are two interesting bits of lore, now vote for the one you don’t want to be lost forever." If you have two awesome stories to tell, then tell them both, don’t withhold one from us forever just because it was packaged in with the losing candidate’s rewards.

I’ve seen this happen a couple of times. The arrow in the screenshot points to the wall that people are getting stuck in. It’s a solid part of the environment, not one of the breakable corrupted ice walls.

There's nothing legendary about it.

…if I continue with wanting to get the ‘legendary’ I’ll take the ‘legendary’ step of grinding cof p1 and paying TP flippers in the future.

Is this what legendary is?

Arguments and missed points aside, I agree with this. In other MMOs I had to do a challenging, epic quest chain for the equivalent of a legendary weapon. In this game, I have to get extremely lucky with RNG, or grind/flip endlessly to buy the precursor (and then grind more for the legendary itself). It doesn’t feel “legendary” at all, IMO. I hope they can implement the new precursor acquisition method soon, for those who are getting tired of the RNG/mindless repetition method and want a more clear path to their weapon.

The fear quest chains actually do bug out sometimes, though. I encountered the same issue the OP described, when my boyfriend and I were leveling our first characters. We did A Light in the Darkness together, I was the instance owner, and I picked letting an innocent die as our fear. He accepted my story progress, and all was well until we finished Forging the Pact together. I was properly given Tower Down as the next quest, but my boyfriend’s quest switched over to Striking Off the Chains, even though he’d accepted my story progress at every point, and therefore should’ve stayed on the same quest path as me.

This happened to a mesmer in my group a few days ago, too. We were fighting the ice elemental at the end of the dredge fractal, and he couldn’t regain health from his self heal or any group heals used on him. Maybe something’s wonky with agony? He didn’t have agony on him while the bug was happening, but maybe it hit him earlier and the healing reduction effect somehow stacked up and lingered.

As far as I know, there are no Mending pants (or I missed them too), but the Outrider’s Chausses from the level 78 quest match the set.

Grass, stream, salmon, red, honey, sour. All maxed even though some look kinda weak in the screenies. The bioluminescence is one of the many things I love about this race

why does everyone hate trahearne?

Trahearne was not the leader of anything during Battle of Claw Island, and had nothing to do with the order mentors’ deaths. He was at Claw Island to warn everyone about the incoming attack. It ends badly because Commander Talon doesn’t believe him or you, and underestimates the threat. Your order mentor chooses to stay behind to help everyone else escape. In the followup quest, Trahearne acknowledges their courage and accompanies you because they were also his friends, and he wants to help avenge them. The only time Trahearne stands back and barks out orders is a couple quests later, during Retribution (taking Claw Island back from the risen), and even then he’s just warning you about Blightgast’s attacks.

Also, Carys is the one who says she helped Trahearne rescue Tegwen. Trahearne doesn’t take credit for anything that happened with the mirror.

Elementalist is wearing t3 cultural helm, Conjurer shoulders, Masquerade gloves and boots, Priory chest and legs. The gloves clip through the sleeves quite a bit, but I like the way it looks.

Thief is wearing COF shoulders and gloves, TA chest, legs and boots.

Do you hate Trahearne?

Trahearne is my favorite character. I think playing a sylvari first helped me warm up to him, though. Working with him from 10-20 and again to take down Mazdak gave me the opportunity to bond with him before he showed up at Claw Island. There are a few sylvari-exclusive moments that make him seem a bit more “real” too, like his sibling banter with Caithe, his clueless reaction to an npc fangirling all over him, a Nightmare Courtier pretty much calling him a nerd when he tries to defend a friend, etc. Unfortunately the other races only get a brief introduction to him right before the story takes a more depressing turn, and from that point on he mostly stresses out about his Wyld Hunt and duties as Pact Marshal. So even though I think a lot of the common complaints about Trahearne are silly, I can understand why non-sylvari players feel like he shows up out of nowhere, and why some find him boring/lacking in development.
