The expansion would still sell for $50 whether you choose to believe it or not. They do take a slight loss in potential revenues they would have made from selling the core game separately
So you actually do believe that any significant number of new players would have bought the core game and the expansion if they were priced separately and amounted to $75 total? Because I certainly don’t. Some would, sure. The majority is much more likely to wait for a sale or skip the game entirely.
Or you know, they could offer the bundle for the new players, and offer a standalone price for the vets.
Best of both worlds, and would have pretty much solved this entire debacle before it even started.
This expansion does actually set up a couple races to be more likely to become playable, in specific the Tengu which are now directly taking active roles in conflicts (at least that is what Anet has said anyway), meaning they are progressing from a passive NPC to a much much more active NPC.
ESO and Wildstar are the latest MMOs that tried a subscription model and both failed. The market has changed and people are not willing to commit to subscription fees anymore
I’m certain ESO didn’t go B2P because of low amount of subs, it was planned to do so before the console release.
Why would they do that? A successful sub model (that manages to keep enough people playing and paying) generates more income, doesn’kitten IMO they probably suspected they couldn’t uphold the sub-model, nevertheless started with one to rake in the additional income of the early-hour enthusiasts and then switched to B2P when the subscription rate got so low that it wasn’t profitable anymore (and they were ready to push the console version to score additional sales of the base game).
Subs don’t work too well on console. Generally that payment model is viewed extremely unfavorable by people.
So, if they gave the people that bought the game after release all the same stuff that people who pre-ordered received, why then would people pre-order? FYI: All games do this, or do you not have a Gamestop where you live? Even if you do not have a Gamestop, have you seen a commercial for any major game advertised that didn’t have pre-order only items attached? Dragon Age, God of War, Halo, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, etc, etc, etc. All games do this to entice players to “buy now”. Anet is not a pioneer in this regard, even among MMO’s. (please see SW:ToR, WoW, Rift, etc).
Perhaps they should offer a better reason to preorder then. Because the amount of content that they are offering for a preorder is actually quite small in comparison (at least for those that already own the game and are loyal to the game) other games that offer preoder, and most games that offer preorder (the ones that haven’t flopped miserably after their release anyway) are very open about the content that is going to be in the game.
This community can never be pleased.
On the contrary, it looks a bit shady that they are pushing the preorder this hard (especially in the way they are pushing it, not really the fact that they are pushing it).
Where is the content? What exactly am I paying for? They say they have more stuff than what they are currently showing, so what is it (they don’t actually have to spoil story elements to give us a rough idea of what we can expect)? Because currently the amount of content they have shown really doesn’t justify kitten pricetag (in my personal opinion) This doesn’t mean that there isn’t 50$ worth of content there, it simply means they aren’t currently showing it (and that is where the problem lies).
If people saw that they were going to be getting a lot of content with this update then they would be buying it in droves, but everything that Anet has said and has done is actually pointing to there being a significantly less amount of content than what we would expect for such a price, and that is why people are showing anger.
Finally, new traits have been implemented. At least you guys are on the right path mechanically, still need to iron out the content releases, but that is for a different discussion.
They had 250 years to advance since the first game, of course there is going to be new technology, and I think it looks pretty neat, now please stop and enjoy the game for what it is. If you don’t like it don’t look at it. Simple as that.
And I can totally buy it tbh. In GW2 universe they already acknowledge the existence of other worlds besides theirs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyria was surrounded by many of those worlds/planets. Look at the night sky in some areas, you can see the galaxies, indication of a young universe.
Humans, if you didn’t know, are not originally from Tyria but from another planet. Gods brought em to Tyria for whatever reason. If I can believe that in a video game, I can surely believe they have such tech.
This is technically not 100% true. As I said before, it took humans a VERY long time to ever get a form of machine working, a very long time. Once man created a machine, then the inventions started flowing out, one after the other. But I must still reiterate that it took them a VERY VERY long time to get to that point.
Yea, holograms and all that stuff really ruin the appeal. Warcraft did the same thing when they released burning crusade and all of its spaceship nonsense.
Its not the fact that it was a hologram that is bothering me….its those bloody eyes and that creepy smile……
This game needs a little less focus on all the steampunk. I have no issue with it being there, however it seems to be changing from simply becoming a tool and a background item to something that is becoming extremely critical (more so than magic….unfortunately) to the game.
There has to be a careful balance between technology and magic, and it looks like that barrier seems to be breaking (with technology swiftly replacing magic).
Well technology advances with the times, you can hardly expect them to continue using obsolete crap of 250 years ago in the modern world. We don’t use pinhole cameras when we can just pull out a smartphone and insta-snap now do we?
It took us humans over 500 years to get past using swords and the bow and arrow.
This is why I could never bring myself to play a Sylvari, they acted so friendly and 1-dimensional that I wanted to puke.
My only issue with the holo-kiel was those big red eyes and that evil smile…..
I swear, I took 1 look at that holo, and all I could think was “What have those fools done…..WHAT HAVE YOU FOOLS DONE!!!!!!!”
Edit: And what I mean by that, is I mean why did you all vote for Kiel
(edited by Gorman.4372)
He is talking about a civil war, which is actually fairly different compared to the other wars.
I already made my thoughts known on technology as it relates to lore over in the 50-foot Kiel thread.
It’ll suffice to say that it has been taken just a wee bit too far at times. But it’s ANet’s lore, and I’m sure they’ll just pull something out to fix it all. (“Oh, Kralkatorrik is immune to lasers somehow. Better go on a quest with Trahearne to find his real weakness!”)
If that ever happened, I would sign up for Kralkatorrik’s army and kill Trahearne myself!
I know that there’s only a few moves that will root you in place – and they’re meant to. Flurry, 100b, etc. etc. They are supposed to be high payoff for high risk (high dmg vs rooted).
Also I don’t want people jumping around me like in WoW and attacking me. I like the way that you can’t attack while in the air.
Try using the 1-handed sword chain on the ranger, you will not be traveling ANYWHERE while you attack with it.
We need a 3rd soldier class. A very good addition would be located here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Introducing-the-Chronomancer/first
forewarning, its a long read, but very well thought out and made.
Extremely well thought out, and I deeply hope they implement this. I definitely feel that it needs to be tweaked (strongly) by the dev team, however I also feel that this class would be very workable. Also, very interesting take on the Chronomancer, never thought of them as a heavy armored class, however I definitely feel you did a good job as representing them as such.
Bring in more skill alternatives for said weapons already ingame.
TO WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!!!!

I always found the autoattack for the sword to be a little bit odd simply because if you are not careful, you will be completely unable to use a critical dodge or skill simply because of the leap preventing you from doing so. Thus I found it to be more of a hindrance than a boon. Also, with it being your 3rd attack, generally speaking your already next to your target by then (and if your not…how in the world did you get to the 3rd attack in the chain?), it really only has uses in pvp where the target might try to kite away. In pve it really isn’t that hard to keep up with monsters trying to kite you (plus, I have never really seen that happen to much) so the leap is generally wasted.
I would rather they get rid of the leap ability and place something else there (not a dodge/evade…..that would be fairly op considering the fact that rangers not only get the most dodges out of any class in their weapon bar (sword + dagger….god the horror) they also have the capability to have the most dodges with the right trait selection.
There is also the option of engaging the trapper from range or simply going around the traps (granted I know this isn’t always possible). When I see a trap ranger in sPVP I just remain at a distance and take him down from range.
Pets should get their own traits that you can fill out yourself, allowing you to build them to your liking. The pet also does appear to act odd in dungeons, call me crazy but it almost seems that they take more damage in there. The most massive flaw however (and really there isn’t much they can do to fix this) is the fact that pets use AI, and we have only limited control over them.
On a side note:
One thing that I truly miss from Gw1 that the ranger had were preparations. Granted, they weren’t handled very well in GW1, but they would have been perfect for GW2.
Another thing that I miss from GW1 was that you could CHOOSE to bring a pet, in GW2 its either bring your pet, or just grab another class.
