WvW isn’t successful enough to meet Anet’s aspirations, and the the way it’s been headed it’s not going to be.

Even with (or perhaps because of) the disasters of the current patch, WvW is rapidly turning into a game focus on the hardcore WvW players and servers. This is emptying out the WvW maps, makes WvW less appealing to new and casual players (they are even more stomp bait than they were in the past), and makes it progressively harder to create successful match-ups in WvW.

The problems seems to arise from two lines of flawed thinking:

• Flawed Idea #1: Imbalance is a defining characteristic of WvW
  This has led to Anet’s Wvw team:
  a) Implementing changes that make WvW even more unbalanced
  b) Being blind to the potential to improve balance in WvW and the benefits that would deliver (WvW would be more fun for existing players and and more attractive to new/casual players)
• Flawed Idea #2: Increasing player power is a successful strategy for WvW
  This idea has lead to changes that directly increase the power of dedicated WvW players and servers and in doing so has:
  a) Made WvW less appealing to new players and players on servers with low levels of WvW participation
  b) Exaggerated the differences in competitiveness between WvW servers.
  Amazingly, this idea (which seems to be derived from the flawed imbalance idea) is directly counter to the approach that has been fundamental to the success of the rest of GW2.

There is one further problem:

• there are too many WvW servers for the number of people playing WvW.
  This results in many servers having WvW populations that too low to be competitive, and avid WvW players flocking to the few servers with competitive populations and in the process further eroding the competitiveness of the servers they abandon.

Anet need to clean up the mess they’ve made of WvW with this latest patch. But rather than plaster over the latest problems, Anet would be far better to use this as a prompt to change direction and improve the balance in WvW. The obvious steps to doing this are:

1. Reduce the number of WvW servers and balance up their populations This can be done by:
   a) Unhooking WvW servers from PvE
   b) Consolidating servers with low populations
   c) Capping WvW sever populations at the highest current WvW server population
   d) Making it free to join or transfer to WvW servers with lower populations
2. Cap WVW gear stats at the exotic level
3. Remove buffs that cause power creep for WvW players

Once that’s in place, we will all have a more competitive environment in which to play WwW (and without which we simply don’t have enough people to play against). From there Anet can take complexity they’ve already put into WvW and make it work by doing things like: fixing the older lag problems, improving the commander system, fixing the party system, and fixing the excessive incentives for zerging.

Overall, this will make WvW more enjoyable for existing players as match-ups and in-game fights will be more balanced and therefore more exciting. This will also make it easier for new players to join WvW as they will a) have less of a performance deficit against established WvW players, and b) have access to more competitive WvW servers without having to sacrifice ties to their existing PvE communities.

Unfortunately, this will also require Anet to acknowledge that it has made mistakes with the direction it’s been taking WvW. The mistakes are there, but to date Anet has shown very little willingness or ability to acknowledge mistakes. Hopefully the disaster of this latest patch is enough to push them past that.

The other problem will be the dedicated WvW players who’ve become addicted to the extra power the recent changes (guard buff, bloodlust, open ended WXP abilities, ascended weapons) have given their characters. They’ve got used to winning more easily and won’t want to give up their hard won superpowers. Their challenge will be to accept that instead of making WvW better, that increase in power has been undermining WvW by i) making participation in WvW less appealing for new and casual players, and ii) making it harder for servers with more dedicated WvW players to find decent competition.

TLDR: Anet have to fix the current mess they’ve made of WvW. It will be far better if they do that in ways that return balance to WvW because that’s what it’s going to take for WvW to succeed.

The new layout looks great and would love to have some fight there. Whoever thought of this bloodlust buff should be banned from any future WvW “Patches”.

No! Bloodlust should be removed and all outmanned zones should get the stat bonus. I prefer to ruins over the water but the stats buff is a joke. The WvW dev’s are out of touch with the WvW community in my opinion. I would love to see Anets keyturning, clicking devs out there on a server that is poorly matched and then have them make decisions after actually playing….

As a solo and small group roamer, this new update is crazy! I understand it was supposed to benefit the “little guys” but when you have only enough to do a few small things whether it is looking for fights or taking a tower or trying to ninja a keep, it will become very onesided now. Once again the larger population server will have more people and have a buff now that makes them harder to kill. No fair duels, no fair roaming, no fair anything. It’s more about the size of the group than actual group or individual skill now. It’s the first day but it has already made a huge difference just in our matchup.

This is why the bloodlust buff should become the outmanned buff and they should keep the map changes in the middle of the borderlands as a place for roamers to find fights. Far away from pointless PPT objectives ;]

I will give you an example that happened about 5 hours ago which epitomizes the bravery of the DR solo roamer. I stumbled upon a DR Guardian outside of a recently capped NE camp. Now you would think that Guardian versus Guardian would be a good fight right? Well not exactly. After hitting him twice he turned tail and ran. Now since some of our guys were in the NE camp he could not run there for safety so he proceeded to run all the way to the North camp in order to catch up to the zerg.

I chased him all the way, finally catching him just inside the gates of the north camp and putting him down. Mind you I did wave to him before I finished him off.

Let me give you a story of the epitome of a HoD roamer. Warrior in KoM. Zergs me down a couple times. Finally catch him solo. kitten him twice. Bow. Next time I see him, he adds on me when I’m fighting a thief and helps run me down.

You should be a bit more respectful towards other small man guilds. Its a close knit community If you write too many checks and are known to be a disrespectful guild people will start talking about the checks that bounced.

You folks are decent but you should understand at this point there is room for improvement after getting some guilds serious mode on you.

I find its easier to set up GvG matches vs other good groups and try new class makes ups or play alts when egos are put aside and people chill with no fear of trolling.

It’s interesting that a lot of these small man groups looking for fair fights have people that consistently add into fights or wait to hit you while you are still fighting other people or just coming off of a fight knowing full well that will give them an advantage.

Want to know who I respect? Splt. Yes, they will go after you when they have more numbers (or even numbers or less numbers). Yes, they will attack you when you are fighting other people. But, they don’t complain on the forums when the same thing happens to them.

Farms 25 stacks and brings in 4 more people, wins 6v12 until it becomes 10v12 and loses, goes back to farming coyotes for stacks again. This is after we ran away with 4 of the 5 people in my party where you came back in 4 more and wondered why we didnt want to fight you 8v7. There were 2 necros, a thief, and my mesmer. I know it is quite confusing to new people that a mesmer isnt actually 4 people, but 1 person with 3 clones, so maybe that is where your math went wrong. Also tell whoever the warrior is in this picture that they should know that leading with shield block when entering a fight isn’t how you warrior, unless it is you, in which case LOL. You were defeated inside of your zerg, not once but three times. I had to track you through clones and many name tags as well as dodge any attacks that came.

Don’t forget getting 25 stacks to play in WvW is a bad thing and him and his friends will make an awesome guild name to reflect you getting 25 stacks to farm them. So much try hard.

I have a suggestion for you.

Visit a drought-ridden area of the world. Build a facility aimed at desalinizing and separating water from liquids. Then proceed to build an irrigation system. Set up a drainage system which then collects your QQ while you play guild wars. Link this to the facility which is then linked to the irrigation system you set up. Then invite local labourers to help tend the fields. You would be doing a great service to those in need and by the looks of that last post, you would be a long lasting source of water.

I really like KOM advanced tactics of rounding up mobs before initiating a fight to either rally off of them when they go down or to cause whoever they are fighting to get agro from the mobs.

This is what we call “getting stacks” . What you do is get 2 weapons one you can wear in your main hand and one you can wear in the off hand with sigils of bloodlust for example. You kill 1 mob and obtain 2 stacks per mob you kill. If you kill enough mobs you get 25 stack which adds 250 to power (Bloodlust was the example) Once you obtain 25 stacks you un equip the weapons put your main weapons on and you keep the stacks. I am sorry you caught us with our stack weapons on.

Uh it WAS a fun night in FC BL but we didn’t come out to play, we had the same number of people we always have, about 15 on the entire map most of the time, maybe 20 at times. The difference was there was no 60 man HOD zerg steamrolling everything in its path. This allowed us to have a fun siege/fight at Sunnyhill for an hour.

Like I said before we aren’t out there to 1v1 and most of us run zerg busting builds not 1v1 builds so it’s pointless. Several of my guildies had said they tried to 1v1 you last night and when you get low you would run away. This is most likely why you were ganked by KoM the other times. Now I foresee a 5-10 man group ganking you every time we see you just for laughs because we know it makes you mad and you felt the need to come to the forums and lie/QQ/troll. ;]

The windmill is a perfect spot to find 1v1’s. Maybe you should head over there instead of jumping one player out of a 5-10 man group and expecting the rest of them not to jump in while you interrupt their group play. Who really wants to sit there and watch some terrible melee ranger 1v1 their guildies when they could be out smashing into zergs and getting cool fights fraps’d? Think about it.

You might think I’m whining about being ganked by multiple players, but I’m not. I’m merely calling someone out who stated something about running away from 4 1v1s, something that never happened. And if you grabbed that from map chat from some random player in your guild yet did observe it yourself at all, that sounds like a bunch of baseless hearsay doesn’t it? Think about it if I totally blitzed and ran away from 1 vs 1 fights where no interference was coming, then why didn’t I do that when I fought you? There were times I would be fighting a single HoD player having a good time and anywhere from two-five+ people would be charging in at the edge of my screen while I fought an individual with intent to gank me, and I’d retreat to safety before they could do so. Maybe that’s where this talk of running from 1 vs 1s came from, however running away from an incoming gank squad and running away from a 1 v 1 are different things, get it? If that’s the case, I suggest your players get a habit of panning the camera behind them, because not paying attention to your surroundings is a critical weakness for any player or group.

Anyways I guess we’re in the same boat in the end; I have nothing to prove either. I jump into 1 v 3, 1 v 5 situations at time purposely just to test my character’s limits and see what I can survive, and how much I can do before I’m forced to run, and that with different groups. I don’t jump into these situations thinking I’m gonna be worshiped for my bravery (or stupidity), or that some guy who’s running with a group magically has a 1 vs 1 build and is gonna separate from the pack to give me some “honorable” duel. Nor do I think I’m a better player for taking zerg/small man synergy specced players out so many in 1 vs 1s. I jump into stupid odds only the expectation to surpass myself and improve as a solo player. To improve my skill, learn the weak and strong points of my current build.

Now, granted I was on a bit of an ego trip this morning after winning so many 2/3vs1s, but you’ve both misread me completely it seems. Last night I was never thinking “Oh these KoM are so pathetic for playing as a team”. I don’t care what your intentions are where play style is concerned, and to participate in a particular battle with one, or more than that is your own choice.

Now, since it seems it took several posts to come to the conclusion that I’m largely a solo player, and your group is a small-man team with builds and play styles reflecting that, and that neither of us are obligated to play each other’s way, I ask you are we done with the forum warrior battles now?

Also regarding your bold which was kind of stupid, if I waited at the windmill outside designated fight club nights I’d be waiting around hours for just a few fights. That sounds pretty kittened. When I fight, where I fight, how I fight, whether I spike or not, is my own choice, just as how you fight is yours. I have my own style, and that’s about that. I don’t look down on you for how you fight, so you don’t need to look down on me either.

But again, all this came about because of this "running from 1 vs 1s’ talk. So I will reiterate again, I never ran from a single combatant outside the occasions where 3-5 more were on the horizon barreling in to get an easy bit of world XP out of me. If I am capable of retreating from such scenarios (which I most often am), I will. Mocking that would be like mocking a thief for using stealth so whatever.

Had some fun with HoD and ET in ET BL this morning.

If you see me, I’m always up for spike-less 1 v 1s, just beckon me and lead me somewhere interference free and take your best shot.

As for all those people from both sides who kept trying to 2/3v1 me and kept dying… no hard feelings, but don’t think I won’t use the water to my advantage when you simply throw numbers at me.

Also @ that random HoD mesmer and the PAXA ele who chased me in the water for like 40 minutes and had a nice duel with me later, respect. Never seen someone that determined before and you proved yourself individually strong when we dueled after as well. Those skirmishes were quite fun, and intimidating at times too. It was a pity neither of us could finish it in the end.

Spikeless 1v1s? So you don’t want to fight someone that can beat you? You must be the melee ranger that runs away during the 1v1s when you get low.

Oh you seem to misunderstand, I often fight duel style and say spikeless because of the vast majority of fights that I win. And that will come off as arrogant my apologies, its just that the average person out there that chases me runs some fodder zerg build and there’s literally no merit in me smashing a flag into them when I crush them.

If you want to fight me 1 vs 1, with spikes I’m open to that too. Although funny, only time I recall running from a “KoM” tag was in 2 v 1+. I’d attack one of you alone and immediately your buddies would rush in to help.

I recall smashing some laughable KoM warrior or guardian with the tag senseless until his buddies always came just in time to save him 2 or 3 times in a row last night, at various intervals. Every time that guy was in such an uphill battle as to make it clear he couldn’t handle me 1 v 1, and outside that there were only maybe 3 other KoM members applicable, so obviously your “4 1v1” talk is all kitten LOL.

Hopefully we’ll meet again later tonight, and have 4 real “1 v 1s” so you can back up your kitten talk. Unless you’ve mistaken one-three of your buddies jumping in halfway through a 1 vs 1 fight when one of you is near half hp, and spamming CC stun lock on a single target until they die as “1 vs 1s”. Cause that’s about all I remember from your guild tag. >_>

Oh osif osif you must be mistaking me with yourself and your other zerglins, infact first logical flaw is that at times we have no keep or towers, and another logical flaw is i solo roam around camps , and I usually never run away unless its a 1v2 or 3 at most, usually i stand my ground. I’m sorry sir but I keep track of those who give me a fair fight for my money, I usually add them and they are usually nice people, I don’t care whether you are PAXA or PHZE or VLK, to me it is just a tag, I don’t let anyone piggyback on their guild’s tag, in fact i rather they show me their skills, if they win i accept defeat and i make a new friend who is better then me and I fight him / her because a challenge is fun, if I win i don’t pin them I add them to my friends list and we have another round, but as for others, even those who use towers such as your friends and use guards and always fail to kill only to run in at low hp, so my dear new friend, from mesmer to mesmer , ill see you around
