Yeah, GW2 is an MMORPG, but most players of the game in general don’t role-play. What we mean when we say Tarnished Coast is an RP server is that most people who want to role-play as a significant amount of their /played time will be there in some shape or form, since RP is boring as cod alone. People will be on Tarnished Coast (or Piken Square, the EU equivalent) because Tarnished Coast was at some point decided by the community to be the designated RP-NA server for GW2. (Don’t ask me how it was decided because I have no idea. I let other people decide that junk then I do what they tell me. =P) Because of the large number of role-players in Tarnished Coast, it’s more likely there than on other servers that two people will meet and randomly fall into RP-ing, which is good, that’s pretty much what a lot of people want out of an RP server. The specific designation is partly for the sense of community and partly for the convenience of finding other RPers to play with. (This doesn’t however mean that most of the people on Tarnished Coast are role-players. Some people don’t care or don’t know Tarnished Coast is the RP server, some people like being on a high-pop server and know that Tarnished Coast will be one, some people like the atmosphere of an RP server but don’t want to RP themselves.)
If you’re lucky, you can get on an arrow cart as a group attacks a tower/keep. If not, be where the fights are, defend what’s being attacked. It usually doesn’t take me more than two to three sessions.
Tarnished Coast is the NA RP server; I believe Piken Square is the EU RP server. Wherever you go, I would generally expect a roleplaying-focused guild to be understanding and patient, but I would also generally expect the EU server’s denizens to be more understanding of language difficulties, given the broad range of countries those servers cover. You should be fine either way, though. RPers are generally nice people; I’ve known of people who joined RP servers just for the atmosphere.
As for finding a guild, I can’t help you there. I’m waiting until guesting is implemented to look for one myself, as I’d feel cruddy being in a guild but not being able to participate in anything. Good luck though.
Well…. yeah. I think it is fairly fun. That’s all it’s meant to be, silly fun. It’s about 5-10% of a huge update to the game. If you didn’t like it, do the mini-dungeons, or the jumping puzzles, which were also in the update and are also permanent. Or do the halloween stuff while it’s here. You don’t need to like the whole entire game down to the last iota, you not liking something doesn’t make it bad, and other people can like things you don’t.
A more detailed explanation is that role-playing (in the context of a MMORPG) is playing the role of an in-game character as a fully-fleshed out character in the world of the game and consistent with the lore of the game. It can be something as simple as selecting dialogue options consistent with the character’s personality, or as involved as meeting with large groups of other players to participate in large-scale storylines and plots, with the in-game characters acting as would characters in any other story. Or it can be in-between, with characters having backstories and interacting with others they meet in the world as the characters would, rather than as the players would. This is a very general sort of explanation, but there are a lot of different types of and ways to role-play, so anything more detailed would cut off a lot of experiences.
If you’d like an example I can probably cook one up tomorrow, when I’m not on the forums at 2 am for some reason. =P

It would be happening for you at 21:00/9 pm (assuming your timezone is +2 GMT as timeanddate tells me). As far as I know, the server you play on won’t affect the timing of the event; the halloween event page only lists the one time.
I have the same problem fairly often, seemingly randomly, using both Firefox 16.0.1 and the alpha build (18.0).
The workaround I generally use is to hold down the back button and select the page I want to navigate to from the dropdown. Doing so usually shows that the page I’m on is apparently the previous two to three pages in the queue.
A griffon pet would be awesome! And seeing as they’d probably have to be put into their own separate pet type category we can have different kinds of griffons.
Including this magnificent specimen of the genus. Met them in Harathi and immediately said to myself, “I want that beautiful creature following me around constantly and watching over me in my sleep.”
Seriously I want one really bad.
I remember doing this one as Order of Whispers. I think I had a minor heart attack upon arriving in the story and realising my pet was missing. I was specced primarily into Beastmastery and my only elite skill was Rampage as One. I eventually got the hang of the sword and did ok, killed Mazdak without too much trouble while my fern hound, I dunno, went to a spa or something. Lazy bum.
Fun quest.
I had some trouble with this too. Went in, see the mouth, it summons all its spectral guard things which start circling it, NPC says to hit it from range and promptly charges into melee range and dies, all the other NPCs die, my pet dies, my other pet dies, I wind up cowering behind a pillar on the opposite side of the room from the stairs with a dead pet.
After all this happened, I picked off the circling ghost things from behind the pillar with my longbow. (Basically be behind the pillar in such a way that the boss can’t hit you but you can hit the ghost things at some point in their patrol.) I don’t know what I had intended to achieve with this (I think I just wanted to accomplish something), but once I had killed them all the NPCs un-deaded themselves and we started going to town on the boss, which had lost a few of his buffs upon losing his bodyguards. After this it wasn’t hard at all, I don’t remember doing anything outside the normal strategies for killing a tough monster.
I do agree though, the first time I tried this quest I just said “bugger this” and went off to 100% a charr zone. It looked impossible. xD
A large portion of the forums is not yet open. Just wait a while longer for the bulk of the forums to arrive. For now what we have is a platform for getting questions answered, guild recruiting, and sharing our ridiculous fanart (or, Six forbid, fanFICS) with each other, which is more than adequate for fostering a new game community while Anet dedicate their resources to the actual game we’re all playing.
