I was GM of a pretty large PvP guild and I already abandoned ship on GW2. The single factor that ruined PvP for me was the downed state. Why put a mechanic in competitive PvP where players can resurrect their teammates once they die? Also, the players come back to life with half HP and no penalties for dieing. It makes killing people 10x less satisfying, and 100x more frustrating. P.S. the only reason I do PvP is to kill people.

Yep, just b/c they aren’t all representing the same guild doesn’t make them a pug group at all. Sometimes people in my premades who are in my guild forget to rep mine in tourney, but other teams can tell we arn’t pug :P

yea so you beat some pugs grats? You were never focused and allowed to free fire in the first clip so no true talent there, not to mention toward the end of the first clip you had your steal off cd but choose to HS 20feet toward a guardian instead of steal CnD. Okay fights on the last two clips, but again vs pugs, any real team will target you everytime your not in stealth.

Theres not 1 second of pug footage in this whole video. We focused fire the entire match and were strictly coordinated in mumble. I probably didn’t want to steal from the Guardian, b/c the 4 second interrupt is a lot less effective than other abilities you can get from different professions for teamfights. Your argument is completely invalid since there’s no pug footage here though :P

Maybe its just me, but I really think tournament videos are meaningless without VoIP voice overs.

I could post this same video with our VoIP if you like. You’ll be able to hear all of us talking, but the sound quality probably won’t be that great. Also as far as the skill cap goes, I fully agree. What would set me apart from other thieves is knowing how to counter other professions, but most importantly my tactics and coordination I provide for the team. It’s simple to use thief perfectly since there are only 16 abilities, but I’m always where I need to be to support my teammates, win fights, and cap open nodes.

Our tournament team has tactics specific to each map, and strict coordination in mumble. On top of this, I find weaknesses in the enemy team based on their player split, and cap any nodes they left due to committing to take one of our nodes. Typically we do a 1 – 4 split (1 player on the side node, 4 in the middle), and I’m the roamer. My role is crucial to the outcome of the game, ensuring that both of our nodes always have the cluster bomb ranged support, resurrections, and single target finisher DPS required. If the enemy team over commits by rushing all 5 players to one node, I will quickly break off and cap their exposed node. My spec has the ability to solo nearly every profession 1v1, but also put out massive game-changing damage in team fights. While I typically can’t hold the nodes I cap as well as a bunker class, my character is literally the fastest of any profession in the game at this moment, so I will always win the race to open nodes, or our nodes that get ambushed.

The title isn’t misleading. I used steal to get the whirlwind that did 28.3k aoe damage lol. The whirlwind ability comes specifically from stealing, and there’s no other way to obtain it as a thief. If anyone watched that video they would see what I was talking about :P

Try slotting SR, Haste and Dagger Storm. Steal from a warrior in the middle of a zerg, SR^Haste^DS^Whirl wheeeeeee

Then use Affliction rune set so you explode in poison when you die :P

They removed enemy profession icons last patch so it makes it more difficult to identify warriors. They seem to roll with that gold and red signet looking thing though.

The title isn’t misleading at all. If you’ve ever played a thief, it’s very clear that steal only crits for about 6k tops in perfect conditions, even with assassins signet. You can’t expect a group of 5 people to immediately dodge out of the way when 1 thief shadow steps into the middle of them and starts using whirlwind. I did in fact hit 28k with the whirlwind that I obtained through stealing, so I disagree that it is misleading.

I somewhat agree. While your build depends on your play style, there are definitely plenty of thief builds out there that are complete garbage, made by people who have a skewed view of how thief should work. I have perfected my tournament build since BWE3 to my play style, but more importantly to the thief itself and what it will need when encountering other professions (dot removal, blinds, stealth). There’s loads of different ways you could make a thief build that would dominate tourney, all being unique trait sets, but realistically most PvPers can’t theorycraft properly. You either need to figure out how the class works and constantly adjust your traits to minimize your characters weaknesses without sacrificing damage output, or just use my meticulously designed spec which I’ve already adjusted dozens of times. This spec counters everything but guardians and bunker elementalists/engineers. Use cloak and dagger as much as possible in 1v1s, and AOE in teamfights. Keep the utilities the exact same as I have listed, and you will be mobile, able to resurrect teamates, and break stun/dodge out of any CC. If you have any questions let me know. Also, I’ll make a video soon that explains the build in more detail, as well as how to use it against each profession.

You’re definitely doing something wrong on your guardian if you’re losing to any thief. For a thief to do 13k backstab crits, they have to be completely glass cannon and put all of their traits, runes, sigils, and utilities into it. These thieves get an easy kill every few minutes on an unskilled player, but are worthless in tourney as they just get dropped in 2 seconds as soon as they are targeted. Just roll dodge when you see that thief go in stealth, and use retaliation. Your play style is to blame in this case for your loss, but you can easily fix that

28.3k from like 5 players isn’t worthy of a thread. Any AOE class does that without requiring they use an ability on a warrior first.

How bout you post some of your pvp footage of you running into 5v1’s then coming out alive then? :P the 28k is just from what i stole, then I did tons more damage to them with my shortbow

Use mine, it’s a DD/SB spec for tourney. I’ve been making it since bwe3, and it’s very effective. I also got some of my videos on my site where you can see me using this exact spec. It’s great for most 1v1s, and the AOE damage from cluster bomb is rediculous. My utility abilities and runes fit the traits perfectly as well. Don’t do a variation of the utility abilities, because each one is crutial to the build. Everyone else will most likely just post cookie cutter specs built by fail thiefs. If you really want to influence your team to win in tourney, use my spec.

Yea i didn’t really think about it when i titled it. It’s not the initial damage of the steal that did 28.4k, it was just the numbers added up that the whirlwind I stole did. I didn’t want to put thief whirlwind for 28.4k though, since I wouldn’t have whirlwind unless I had stole it from a warrior haha. I don’t think I even accounted for the initial damage of the steal, which would probably add about 2 or 3k damage to that number

Keep in mind, if you were to queue with a premade, you could just QQ at your teammate when they leave and make sure they don’t do it again. If your just gonna pug tourney, don’t have high expectations from your teammates. If you can just have your team set before you enter tourney, this will never be a problem for you. Anet expects people to organize their own groups for tourney, sPvP is where you should be without a group, no offense

Thieves have stealth mostly for survivability. You can get massive damage added to your backstab if you spec into it, but in return you’ll die in 2 seconds if your targeted. Dodging pistol whip and hundred blades are basically the same thing, just use ur stun break and dodge a lot to avoid it. Also, what else would you suggest? If thief didn’t have that stealth, it’d be a horrible class cuz you’d die immediately every fight in tourney

Yep, always be sure to wait till the stealth is fully up to cloak and dagger again so you can re-enter stealth immediately. you can basically permanently stay invisible while finishing an opponent

Hundred blades and pistol whip are just the tip of the iceberg. You need that stun break to get out of any form of immobilize or stun, especially if you get stunned in the middle of AOE. While I fully agree that I myself initially started using my stun break specifically to avoid hundred blades and pistol whip, I still use my stun break against any other profession that can stun/impair me. As a thief, if I’m locked down for more than a few seconds, I can drop from full hp, so it’s too important to have that stun break ready for any immobilize/stun.

My video explains and shows why you won’t be able to stealth again in combat (revealed), and how to resurrect your teammates in tournament with shadow refuge. In addition to this, you should watch how I line of sight my enemies and dodge the trebuchet, and adopt those skills for yourself. I also included a good bit of quality tournament footage, with some pug footage in between. Revealed:

• Stealth condition that will not allow you to re-stealth for 3 seconds
• Applied to character if an attack is landed on an opponent while in stealth
• Can be avoided easily if no attack is made during the full duration of stealth

Shadow Refuge:

• Powerful tournament resurrection tool
• Stealths teamates in circle for up to 12 seconds, as long as they don’t leave the circle or land an attack on an enemy
• Tell your teamates when you are placing Shadow Refuge, so they won’t attack or attempt to knock down opponents who are trying to finish them
• Won’t be able to stealth in area if Revealed is applied to character

Yep you just gotta make sure you don’t try to steal from them while they are blocking, cuz you won’t be able to get the whirlwind

A little bit about us:
Our guild was originally formed in Swtor by a group of competitive PvPers. We had over 200 members in Star Wars but have significantly cut our roster size for quality control purposes. We intend to compete in the highest levels of tournaments and encourage only players who are determined to compete to apply. We currently play on the Darkhaven(US) server
