Is that how Guild Wars 2 is meant to be played?

No matter what class you play, or what the classes are capable of, or what weapons they can use….

spec and gear for the absolute highest DPS you can get, to the exclusion of any and everything else. and just hit Q before a big attack.

that’s the correct way to play this game?

i hate running through a city and getting bombarded with random duel challenges that I have no interest in or time for.

however, I wouldn’t hate on a duel option. more options are always good, and never hurt, imo.

This "Season 2"...

Honestly, how many of you would’ve rather seen an expansion pack?

Living story gives us:
- Free updates
- Every 2 or so weeks
- Small amount of content

An expansion pack gives us
- Paid update
- All updates in one big batch
- Massive amount of content

Now, I don’t want to sound like an ungrateful person, but I’d rather have paid for an expansion pack.

If Anet came out tomorrow and said “we’re scrapping the entire Living Story concept and we are going to release an expansion in 2015”, all the Expansion chanters would be here complaining about having to wait 10 months for new content, instead of celebrating getting what they want.

I had to go to work tonight. in fact I just got home.

about 10 minutes before I left for work the update finished downloading. I logged into GW2. I promptly logged back out, turned my computer off and then left for work. LS episode unlocked, for whenever I feel like playing it.

Please don’t make this out to be a matter of people not having lives being able to play while people who have jobs don’t. it’s not the case at all.

the 5 minutes you spent making this thread, could have easily been spent logging in and out of GW2 in order to unlock the LS content.

the Living Story is constant, and changing. If you are not there for it, you miss it. simple as that. I was not here for Season 1, and therefore it is gone, done, and over with, and I missed it. this is nothing for me to complain about. I was not playing GW2 at the time, so I do not get that content. that’s fair, imo. If I miss the timeframe for the time-limited content, then I don’t DESERVE to get it for free. I just move on to the next piece of time-limited content.

being able to pay to unlock it later, is a bonus, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t shed tears for content that I missed.

if you happen to be SOOOOOO busy that you cannot spare 5 minutes to log in and unlock the content, then I don’t really see how you’ll have time to play that content later anyhow, even if they gave it to you for free.

so being able to swap places with a clone that doesn’t exist anymore is a “defensive part of the skill set”? that really does sound like a bug to me. was the Mesmer meant to swap places with nothing?

because that patch note does not say you can’t switch places with the clone anymore. it says you can’t switch with the clone if the clone is already gone. i.e. the clone has to exist, in order to switch places with it.

Crafting is a boring, tedious chore.

JMadFour.9730

In every MMORPG I have ever played, going back to Everquest. Crafting is a boring tedious chore.

stand at a crafting station. Click the item in a menu. Watch the Progress Bar cycle. over and over. can’t do anything else while your items are crafting.

I always try crafting at first, and it always bores me so much and seems so tedious that I always just resign myself to gathering/salvaging and selling the gathered/salvaged materials to people who can put up with the tedium of MMORPG Crafting to make my money and using that money to buy my equipment or using dungeon drops.

thus, I’m disappointed greatly, when I am reading that in order to eventually get best-in-slot items in this Game, Legendary, and Ascended, I am going to be forced to level up Crafting.

Not sure why such things are being FORCED on the playerbase, a portion of which is most likely like me, and dislike crafting in general. I don’t feel you should be FORCED to partake in any particular portion of a MMORPG, be it PVP, Crafting, PVE, etc. if you don’t want to.

that said, I have to play by ANet’s rules if I want BiS in the future. so, I guess I just need a decent guide for the quickest and most painless way to level up a crafting alt, in all the crafts i will need for the Best In Slot equipment. suggestions?

Unless Exotics are being bumped up to match Ascended stat-wise the way Legendaries are?

Save GW2: turn WxWxW in GxGxG.

in WvW

Posted by: JMadFour.9730

JMadFour.9730

Ok, let me explain.

Currently there are no sense in playing WxWxW.

What I am suggesting is that the WxWxW maps (only WxWxW maps) become extensions of PvE maps with new quests, new goals, trade, farms and housing with “real” and “total” open PvP where different guilds can compete (it doesn’t matter the source server) .

Alone or group players could choose factions (temporary or not) as well.

This means that WxWxW maps would allow PK: Player (s) vs. player (s), the real PvP, and no longer a zerg festival.

So, it is a good solution for GW2.

No.

There is no reason in this game to ever have open PVP in a PVE area. The only people who would ask for such a thing are scrubs who cant hack it in the PVP zones.

Ganking PVErs is what you are asking for, and thats not REAL pvp. Thats scrub PVP.

There is a dedicated PVP area. Use it and stop kittening about not being able to harvest PVE tears.

Interesting things in Scarlet's Room [Spoilers]

in Lore

Posted by: JMadFour.9730

JMadFour.9730

I’m sure I’m going to get raged at for this, but I’m gonna be that guy. I can take it.

I’m not understanding what Konig is rage-quitting about, in regards to changing the lore/retconning, in this particular instance. I’m not sure changing Scarlet’s age is something worth quitting the game for. it is a very, very minor detail in the grand scheme of things.

It’s always a general policy, that The Game > Everything else. Books, Interviews, Movies, TV Shows. This is universal, not specific to GW2. You all should know this already.

What happens in The Game always takes precedence over what happens in the Books/Interviews/whatever. When there is a conflict between something said out of game by a Developer, or something that takes place in a Book, and something that happens in the game, you always go with what happens in The Game. The Game is always the prime source of lore, and it always should be.

Just like Star Wars, anything that happens in the Movies takes precedence over anything that happens in a game or book, because the Movies are the prime source of lore.

You go with what is said in interviews and in books, until the Game contradicts it. Then you go with the Game. that is standard procedure for pretty much any MMORPG.

Game Lore > Book Lore > Interview Lore. always.

It is ANet’s job to make sure all three sources do not contradict, but if they deem that it works better ingame for something to be a certain way that contradicts an Interview, then that’s how it needs to be. And it is also ANet’s job to make sure that these contradictions/retcons are few and far between. We’ll just have to trust that this is the case, and there won’t be any mass retcons of everything.

we can be upset and rage about it now, but it won’t change, and we’ll adjust to it. Or we can move to another game, and then rage-quit there, when something that happened in a Book gets retconned by something that happens ingame.

I think everyone needs to have a coke and smile, and take a few deep breaths. the entirety of GW lore is not changing. just Scarlet’s age.

Oh I get what Konig is raging about alright, and he is right. To put things in perspective, he and many other people of the lore community have been dedicated for over 7 years to map out all of the Guild Wars lore. They have been thoroughly collecting and investigating lore from both inside and outside the game. And that’s a wealth of information. But what Bobby stated, basically means that we can pretty much chuck our beloved GW1 manuscripts in the privy.

So yes, I understand the anger and frustration. I love the old GW1 lore, and when I heard how the Bloodstones and the history of magic in Tyria basically got redconned, it angered me. It basically meant that my favorite bit of lore was now void, and could be crossed out.

And to be clear, I do enjoy Living Story season 2 so far, and I think the writing is good. But I like the established lore better. I don’t like it when established lore gets chucked in the garbage can. This is kind of insulting to the whole lore community, to think that all that they’ve been collecting has basically been a waste of their time (over 7 years).

he said nothing of the sort.

He said that the Game takes priority when two things contradict each other. that’s always been the case, and it will always be the case, and it is something everyone here should have already known, if you have any Gaming experience at all. He shouldn’t have had to say this in the first place. It’s standard procedure.

He didn’t say that the entirety of all GW lore that exists doesn’t exist anymore.

you all are reading that into what he actually said, so that you can throw a temper tantrum about Scarlet’s age.

There is no lore in this game

in Living World

Posted by: JMadFour.9730

JMadFour.9730

what this boils down to, is that Loreheads over in the Lore section are throwing a temper tantrum because during a discussion about Scarlet Briar’s age being changed, a ANet dev came by and said “What happens in the Game takes precedence over what was said in an Interview.” Which is standard procedure for any MMORPGs lore, and something that should have been understood by all.

Game > Books > Interviews. that is the lore Priority of pretty much ANY GAME EVER MADE WITH LORE. Things said in interviews are Canon, UNLESS the Game says it isn’t. If the Game does not say “no that’s wrong”, then it can be considered Canon.

so according to the Lore Forum, every single piece of out-of-game lore doesn’t exist anymore because Anet COULD decide to retcon it in the future. Basically they are discovering for the first time that Santa Claus doesn’t exist and a Video Game’s in-game lore takes precedence over Out Of Game interviews.

What I don’t understand is how you adopt an attitude of ‘it only counts if it’s in the game’ when you publish written pieces out of the game itself and consider them backstory or fluff. That’s entirely inconsistent.

that’s not the attitude they are adopting.

Game Lore trumps books and Interviews, but that DOES NOT mean that the Books and Interviews don’t exist or “count”.

Books and Interviews are Canon, unless the Game contradicts them.

The hierarchy of Lore is Game > Fiction > Interviews. Meaning everything is important and “counts” but somethings are more important that others. In-Game Events are more Important than what happens in the Books. what happens in the Books is more important than what was said in the Interview.

I don’t see what is so hard to understand about this.

Guild Wars 2: A Realm Reborn

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: JMadFour.9730

JMadFour.9730

The creator of this thread, i think, doesn’t quite understand just how massive an overhaul that A Realm Reborn really was. they didn’t just take the game down, fix it, and then bring it back up.

they trashed 85% of the game(keeping Locations, Races, classes and NPCs), and basically made a new game from scratch. FF14 was different, for better or worse. they threw everything that made FF14 different out, and replaced it with a very highly polished, wonderfully animated, beautiful, WoW clone.

GW2 does not need that level of changes. if Arenanet did a ARR-level fix to this game, it 1) Wouldn’t be GW2 anymore, and 2)You wouldn’t like it, because everything that makes GW2 what it is would be gone, in favor of a highly polished WoW knock-off. and I could have sworn that the lot of you came to GW2 to get away from WoW knock-offs.

GW2 is different. but it’s not nearly as bad as FF14 was. comparing making GW2 changes to ARR is a highly drastic way to ask for changes.

don’t get me wrong, ARR is a fantastic success story in MMOs, and I played it to max level and enjoyed it. The game world rivals Tyria for beauty, imo. I have trouble deciding which is more gorgeous, as I consider both Eorzea and Tyria to be the 2 most beautiful game worlds in all of MMORPGs.

but gameplay-wise, it’s WoW with different graphics, different races, and the ability to change you class at will.

We can’t get on Tarnished Coast. So we don’t affect whether you have people to RP with or not. If those of us not on TC get together on another server, it won’t “split” your RP Population that we do not have access to.

That said, is there even enough non TC RPers to gather on another server, to begin with?

from what I understand (and I’m nowhere near endgame yet), basically it boils down to:

WvW
Structured PVP
PVE Dungeons
Exploration and Map Completion
Fractals of the Mists
Living Story
World Events

that is listed in no particular order.

that’s the basic endgame for GW2.

what you will NOT find, is Raids and Raid Tier Equipment. and this seems to be one of the main sources of major forum complaintfests, as Raids and Raid Tier Equipment is the entirety of the endgame for pretty much every other MMO out there.

Many of us came for the game that was advertised in the Manifesto. GW2 isn’t that game either, now is it?

don’t see what “The Manifesto” has to do with this specific discussion.

but sure. let’s throw out 85% of GW2 and make a WoW clone, ARR style, because it’s not the exact Manifesto down to the smallest word.

I really need to see this “Manifesto” so i can understand why trashing the entire game and starting over from scratch(like FF14 did) is worth discussing on this forum. and why it gets brought up in every single thread on every forum.

and how apparently the current GW2 is so 100% completely different from whatever the Manifesto said it would be. I often wonder if the game is indeed completely 100% different from the Manifesto, or if people are just mad about ascended gear.

Sea of Sorrows happened. Edge of Destiny happened. Ghosts of Ascalon happened.

what has changed is that Scarlet is older then we thought she was. god they really need to move away from Scarlet with the LS.

Out-of-game Lore is canon until the Game says otherwise. The game has said that Scarlet is older. the Game has not said that everything else is non-canon.

I’ve seen it complained that the Flamethrower has no tube connecting it to the backpack, when it should, and wondering where the Flamethrower ammo comes from.

Has anyone looked at the Flamethrower kit? I mean REALLY looked at it, and zoomed in?

The Flamethrower itself has a top-loaded cartridge of some sort of flammable liquid.

the Backpack has a tank filled with the flammable liquid, and it feeds into a replacement cartridge on the side, identical to the one top-loaded onto the Flamethrower.

so it looks like what is missing there, is a reload animation, which would likely be attributed to gameplay reasons, as if you had to reload the flamethrower, every gun type weapon would have to have a reload as well.

also, we could probably do without the actual backpack, just let the tank itself sit on our backs.

What do you think are the most interesting?

one of the most interesting that I’ve seen, is the conversation between two Sylvari in Brisban Wildlands, Thermaine and Brenalynn.

They are both found at the Watchful Source Waypoint in Brisban Wildlands, inside one of the buildings. Brenalynn is trying to understand Thermaine’s choice of becoming a Warrior and his passion for fighting, as she is a peaceful Sylvari ( i think she’s a gardener of some sort, i’ll need to go back and listen to the conversation again), and Thermaine’s explanation contains some of the coolest NPC lines I’ve heard in the game.

some of his quotes (not in order):

“I fight like a Sylvari. My blade flows and cuts like a cold wind in the forest.”
“I am no placid gardener, no gentle guardian. Thorns bite, vines choke, and I kill.”
“The singing of a sword is like a breeze through the trees.”
“I am a Warrior. Nature reveals the arts of war to me.”

another good one, is the Sylvari adventurer in The Grove who just came back from exploring the other Cities, and dislikes Hoelbrak because it is too kitten cold.

but it isn’t a matter of being a Casual Player. i don’t consider myself to be a casual player. not 10-hour a day Hardcore, but not casual either.

I just don’t like Crafting as an ingame activity. in ANY MMO, not just this one. I NEVER craft, I always just take whatever gathering professions there are and do those. I can do those while I am playing the game normally, rather than having to sit at a craft station for hours on end doing nothing but watching the progress bar.

I’ll happily pay someone else for their crafted goods, even if it costs me a little extra. cause Crafting sucks(to me). I’m wondering why it is so important that you craft a Legendary or Ascended item yourself. why not be able to gather all the Materials and give them to a Crafter to craft for you for a fee, like in most other MMOs. standard was that you either gathered the mats and took em to a crafter and paid a set fee based on the item, or you paid extra if the Crafter had to get the mats himself. what’s wrong with that?

I liken this to a staunch PVE-only, despises PVP player being forced to do PVP against his will. or vice-versa.

I don’t know about the rest of this thread, but I just wanted to say that Eir Stegalkin is way hotter than she has any right to be.

So if the game is priority, why the hell waste everyone’s time with interviews and short stories and books ?
What’s next Abaddon making a come back ?

Expanded Universe(which is short stories, books and interviews) ONLY sets lore when it does not contradict what is ingame.

It expands, adds to, what is in the game. But the Game itself is the prime source. it has to be.

Whenever the game makes a change that contradicts previous Expanded Universe content, the Game should take precedence.

GW1 is Prime Source.
GW2 is Prime Source.

everything else is EXTRA goodness.

my confusion with all the stomping and tantrum throwing, is that this is a MINOR change to be stomping and tantruming about. it is the age of a single character. changing this single character’s age does not invalidate every single piece of lore thre has ever been for Guild Wars. hell, it doesn’t really even invalidate anything at all.

yet you all are treating it as it they just said that the entirety of Guild Wars Prophecies didn’t happen.

I think you guys are making a Shiverpeak Mountain out of a Moledavia Molehill.

at all? even a little bit?

Reading this forum as a new player, I get the impression that this is one of the worst MMOs on the market.
