On-demand asks the game to download content only when the game requires it. This setting is useful for those who have data caps to worry about. This setting may cause issues of models popping in. This is the exact behavior “Off” had, we simply renamed it to better indicate its behavior.
Idle will stream in content while your connection is generally idle. This is useful if you’re going to be playing in the same map for some time, so that the general impact to your gameplay should be minimal.
Max will stream-in content as fast as it possibly can. This is most like leaving the launcher to fully patch.
The Streaming Client will prioritize items you interact with in your inventory, wardrobe, gem store, etc. When a piece of ui content is interacted with, if the content isn’t already on disk, it will overlay the spinner to indicate that the content is being downloaded. Do note that if you interact with a bunch of inventory items it could degrade performance as those items are given much higher priority. Once downloaded it may take a few moments before the item displays on screen in the wardrobe, for example.
What happens when a new client becomes available? No behavior has changed in this regard. You will need to update your client first before the streaming starts back up.
How do I opt-out? The best way to avoid being impacted by the streaming is to fully patch in the launcher before you start the game.
I apologize for the thread necromancy, but rather than make a new thread, with the exact same concern, I decided to post here instead.
My question is this: I have noticed since the streaming client was launched that my data usage has gone up considerably. This is a problem for me, since I have a capped data connection.
You say that I can avoid being impacted by streaming if I fully patch in the launcher – however I do this by default and I’m still noticing a significant increase in the game’s data usage since the streaming was implemented.
What can I do to fix this problem? It’s getting to the point where if I play more than 30min of gw2 a day I risk running out of cap before the end of the month.
Guess I’m getting a digital edition. Just an FYI, South Africa is a place that exists and not having it on the list of retailers kittenes me right the kitten off.
This expansion should be free like other’s mmo …..not payable….
NAME JUST ONE mmo that is B2P or P2P that has free expansions. You haven’t played many MMO’s I take it.
As far as I know the only MMO that meets those criteria is EVE Online. EVE has a monthly fee but all expansions are free.
I know that WoW has a monthly fee and I’m pretty sure (I’ve never played it, you understand, but that’s what I gather from my Blizzard storefront) that you also pay for individual expansions, which strikes me is stupid.
I’m perfectly happy to give Anet my money once for the game and then again for the expansion, because even paying for twenty expansions will still not cost me as much as EVE has over the years.
I am concerned, however – is the expansion required? I mean, it’s not something that’s ever come up in EVE, where you either get the free expansion or you don’t play the game, but if people have to buy the expansion or lose access to the base game that would be a bit kitten.
There’s no miniskirt in Masquerade armor.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
That’s because it doesn’t have a skirt at the front. It’s a curtain tucked into a diaper. I don’t think it belongs in a discussion about skirts AT ALL.
That’s possibly the best description I have ever read of the Masquerade armor
a million times this.
Still, it’s definitely better than the old days, when you had to find someone who you could trust to send you back your gold once you were in the appropriate toon…
There’s no miniskirt in Masquerade armor.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
That’s because it doesn’t have a skirt at the front.
The last thing a game containing Masquerade Armor needs is more mini skirts.
You know what would be great? Something that would make my character look like the Mistress. That would be fabulous.
I think the important point that almost everyone is missing is this:
“The game doesn’t give you credit for participation if you actually play it as intended. "
WHICH IS 10000% TRUE AND MADE ME SUPER MAD because all I wanted was the stupid achievement points but if you are good at surviving but not quite good enough and don’t manage to catch anyone before the timer expires, your time has been wasted and it doesn’t even tick up the achievement and that just kittened me right off
I’m pretty sure they will raise the level cap with an expansion. And I don’t think it’ll be a huge deal….but yeah, there are definitely pros and cons associated with it.
Hopefully it won’t come with a new tier of gear though.
Then you aren’t thinking. A level cap raise is a huge deal.
We can assume that they will scale up legendaries. We can’t assume the same for Ascended, and it definitely won’t happen for Exotic gear, unless the new levels don’t come with higher level (not higher tier) gear to begin with. The mere idea of the dozens or even hundreds of hours spent gearing characters in Ascended going to waste is frightening, and, for many players, gamebreaking.
But let’s ignore gear for the moment. A new level cap would also add more trait points. That’s a big impact, as it would completely change the number of builds and the strength of these. The balance of the game would completely shift. That’s not necessarily a bad thinig – it might even be a positive – but it’s certainly a huge deal.
Now, if there is no effect gear and/or traits, then the new levels would be fundamentally pointless.
I would like to have higher levels mainly for a feeling of accomplishment. I mean, we’re gaining these levels anyway, would it really be so awful if we had a number saying how many times we’ve levelled above eighty?
Or a separate secondary levelling system like D3’s paragon levels, although that would probably be a lot of work.
(and now I have Leonard Cohen saying "there’s gonna be a meter on your bed that will disclose/ what everybody knows’ and why do these things happen to me?)
I was actually thinking the other day: Why have a level cap at all?
It’s not like we stop accumulating skill points.
I might have been slightly influenced by D3’s basically uncapped Paragon system. I mean, in d3, if you see someone with a paragon level of 700, you know that this is not someone who is just messing about.
I want a lvl300 elementalist, please.
You literally wouldn’t have to change a single other thing about the game, just don’t stop the levelling process at 80 and let us go on and play as usual, but now knowing that our levels will reflect just HOW AWESOME WE REALLY ARE.
okay?
okay.
Event’s almost over and no mini.
I’m going to go spend a couple of gold on ToT bags (so far I’ve just been farming like a mad thing) and if I don’t get it, so be it. I only really want it because it looks like Classified from Penguins of Madagascar and would give me a giggle.
ETA: nope. lots and lots of luck though, ironically enough…
(edited by Jaggedrain.6923)
I was wondering if that was it!
I asked a guildie who does good builds to make me one and she did, but she put the SoB on and I was…puzzled (because I don’t really do builds and things)
Although she also said to do Celestial gear and that makes me sad because I don’t have the stuff to make it.
I don’t understand the point of putting Sigils of Battle on the only class in the game that can’t swop weapons in combat. Is there something totally obvious that I am missing?
Well, the dress you’re wearing is quite pretty…
I’m here to discuss it:
Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope.
NOPE.
Like the new interface, but the fact that I can’t customize the amount of Gems I want to buy is ridiculous, and the fact that none of the amounts offered (as I believe you have been told) match ANYTHING on sale is not only exploitative, but insulting. Did someone actually sit down and think that the playerbase is too stupid to realise that we will end up buying more gems than we need just to get the things we want?
Please, either remove the preset amounts altogether, or at the very least allow us ALSO to add custom amounts.

No but this is good! It’s 23:20, I just finished the kittening paper (I HATE ALL REPORTERS AND ALSO THE WORLD) and now I have to go to bed, because I have to be up again in a little over four hours.
If the patch had been out, I would have felt compelled to play a bit, and if I had done that I would have died, because tomorrow is of course the one Wednesday this year where I can’t just come home at 1300 and crash into my bed and die, because apparently playdates are a thing? and apparently moms now have to attend them? I don’t kittening know, but I do not approve of things that interfere with my Wednesday naptime routine -_-
TL:DR: omgsohappy the patch isn’t out yet
Thanks for the ideas and yea sure you can be a judge
Can I be a judge too? I am AWESOME at judging people!
Omg please don’t bring the clocktower back, please please please.
That will make it the third year where I have done LITERALLY NOTHING but try to beat that godkitten tower over and over and over during Halloween. I can’t stop myself , I have to beat it.
Once, I bounced off the clockface and ragequit the game for six months.
(spoiler, I’ve never reached the top)
ALTERNATIVELY if it does return, for the love of god and little kittens please don’t tell me…
You forgot the best of them all – EVE Online is also releasing their Phoebe expansion/update on the 4th (I wonder whether they nicked the idea off Anet, actually) and I am going to be SERIOUSLY torn as to which game I am going to play.
(UNLIMITED SKILL QUEUES HELL YEAH!)
I’d have a screenshot competition and personally, not split it up at all. Or if you really want to, split it into 4×250g chunks
Hey! We have so much to do in game now, that anet decided it would be better to hold halloween a bit.
Thanks a lot! =3Maybe if you’re a new player, but to us vets, we have….. collections…. oh JOY! What awesome new content sigh
I was trying to be sarcastic…
So were they, I think…
Anyway don’t be negative about Halloween, you guys! I prefer to believe that it’s going to be fabu, and you can pry that belief from my cold, dead hands.
That option already exist and its called a Bank. Its account wide
In WvW You can access your personal bank through all guild bankers, including borderland bankers and Guild registrar.
Talk to a guild registrar and selecting first option “I want to access guild bank” and if you want to access your account then in the window on the top left select “Account Vault” instead of inventory, open inventory window with ’’I’’ and you can deposit/withdraw. It work in all borderlands as well as regular areas where a guild registrar can be found
Just put your blue prints in the bank instead
Oh my god this is awesome. I love this, it’s brilliant and I would like to marry you at a time and place of your choosing. You can wear the dress, I’ll bring flowers.
Oh thanks for this, I missed the autologin :p
Well, for me, these and those from last season are just collecting dust and taking up inventory space. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way for more of them.
I’d like them to be added to the account wallet and stop taking up inventory space, kthanx
I have to say that, as someone who has been playing the game for a while, I found the NPE incredibly annoying.
If it had been there when I started the game, though, my start might have been less rocky. I’ve played a lot of games, but other than EVE Online (where I was fortunate enough to actually know the game very well by the time I first played and also had my brother’s corp on hand to explain what I needed explained) and a brief foray into WoW’s starter edition (I don’t think I even hit the level cap), GW2 is my first MMO. I was super excited about it before launch and read all the blogs and watched the videos and all that, but my first couple of days playing did not go well AT ALL.
I found it freeing but also confusing, and I think I would have liked the way the NPE introduces new concepts at a rate that someone who might not have a lot of experience with MMOS can absorb better.
That being said, can I turn the kittening thing off please? Or at the very least the stupid pop-ups about the BLT and levelling and underwater combat and blah blah blah. Maybe make it so that those popups only appear the first time you level a toon?
FANTASTIC!
I literally did a little wiggle of joy in my office here, I can’t wait!
I missed last year because of work and stuff, so I’m hoping that I can play twice as much this year to make up for it
Thanks for the assist!
Are we getting a Halloween event this year or no?
I’m getting worried because I love the holiday events with every shred of my black little heart and with the new LS coming on November 4, there’s not really a lot of time left for the Halloween event.
Has anyone heard anything that I’ve missed about it? (I haven’t seen anything about a Halloween event at all, so if you’ve seen something, I’ve missed it.)
Since the megaserver thing I’ve ended up in a couple of zones where the map chat was predominantly French or German. If I needed information I asked in English, because my French and German are both atrocious although I can understand enough to get by of the written language. The people in the map have always been kind enough to reply in English. Should they have been rude to me because I wasn’t speaking the majority language? Or does that only apply when the majority language is English?
Nope, sorry. It’s a multilingual world, and people have to learn to cope. English is not some kind of special snowflake that must be respected at all costs, and English speakers do not have priority over the speakers of any other language.
That being said, basic good manners will get you far. Many people are willing to make allowances for people who do not speak the local language if said speaker is polite, and the same goes online.
I think the guy was being a jerk. Sure, he has the right to block whoever he wants to, but he should do it quietly and not make it the other players’ problem.
Quite frankly the sense of entitlement I have seen in map chat from English players is horrifying.
Sorry, random map person, you don’t have the right to dictate what language I communicate in. I paid just as much for the game as you did, and that means that if I want to communicate with others in public in English, Afrikaans, Dutch, German, French or Swahili, I can absolutely do that and you can go lurk in your monolingual Cave of Boredom forever and ever for all I care.
Just to bring this into RL terms, what that dude in map chat did was comparable to, in real life, coming up to someone who is having a conversation in German and saying “This is the US! Speak English or gtfo!”
I wouldn’t mind a bit more sex appeal to the male costumes. Where are their harem outfits? An appropriate male version of the embroidered light armour should be completely shirtless with upper arm bracelets and the same pants and shoes.
Why are all the pretty GW2 men so shy? We need to see more!
Also it’s a crying shame that our options are 1890s schoolmarm or venice courtesan when it comes to female armor. I quite like the aetherblade armor for the bit of steampunk they have going on there and the fact that my poor salad ele doesn’t look like a little girl playing dress-up in her mom’s lingerie, but for the love of all that is holy, there isn’t enough cloth in the light fire skin to make a baby blanket, let alone armor for a whole actual person
Also all hail the extreme gorgeousness of the TA lady light skin, despite the boob claws, and the winged set, which is also awesome.
Who would you cast as the jellyfish’s voice actor?
Benedict Cumberbatch and Jennifer Hale. No other options are possible, your argument is invalid.
Several posts ago, someone mentioned being so pleased as a sylvari or an asura to see characters from the start of the game later on.
It made me realise that that’s something that’s missing from GW2.
For example: in Mass Effect, there is a couple on the Citadel wondering if they should get genetic screening for the woman’s baby (I believe it’s the woman and her brother in law, as her husband is dead.) You can chime in (because you’re Commander Shepard, Savior of the Galaxy, look it doesn’t have to make sense).
Those characters reappear in ME2 and ME3. Not major, they don’t give you missions or anything, but they’re there. In ME2 you hear them talking about what a healthy kid it turned out to be (and worrying about something new, of course) but you can’t talk to them. In ME3 you can advise them to leave the Citadel before the Reapers attack it.
This isn’t the only time something like that happens in that series, although it’s the only one I can remember in specific detail at the moment. That feeling of glee when you see someone from a previous chapter, and knowing that you influenced their lives, is worth any amount of cutscenes explaining how you changed the world. To me. YMMV obviously.
That’s what I want from Guild Wars. Don’t make me hang around for five or ten minutes at a time listening to dialogue from characters that, quite frankly, I don’t care much about (and honestly, I find Taimi adorable and Kasmeer and Marjory were really sweet before I had to listen to hour upon hour of them yammering on about their feelings, but I really don’t care one way or another about Rox – that might have been different if, as someone pointed out, she was actually a window into a part of Charr society we don’t often see, but she’s not – or Brahm). Don’t try to force me to be sentimental about characters – that only works for Stephen Moffat and you are not he.
Let me explore the world and come to care about the characters organically. Get me invested by having charming side characters who don’t force themselves on my attention.
And for gods’ sakes stop whinging about your feelings, Kasmeer!
(Also, if we’re looking to rec writers, may I commend Robin Hobb to your attention?)
Every time there’s a big patch, it’s a major hassle to download.
Today is no different. I’ve been sitting in front of my computer for an hour and a half now, babying the GW2 client because it keeps dropping to 0kb/s from its spectacular and amazing speed of 35kb/s and then not doing anything until I restart the client.
I just had to do it again.
To clarify, my connection is not slow. I just downloaded the new (ish, I’ve been busy, okay?) EVE Online patch. It took twenty minutes. It was over a gb. During which time the GW2 client actually shot up to a massive 70kb/s.
I just had to do it again. It downloaded 45kb this time.
This is ridiculous. I am going to bed now. I’ve given up on getting the transmutation stones, which is the only reason I rolled myself out of bed at this frankly obscene hour of the morning. I’d recommend that you fix this problem if you plan to do 24-hour free things, Anet.

So no, the story isn’t fabulous, but it’s pretty entertaining and doesn’t suffer from any too-terrible plot holes, and really, that’s all we can expect.
Indeed. While I don’t agree with the poster elevating the Living Story above such RPG masterpieces as the Dragon Age games, Guild Wars 2 has good enough writing to serve a massive audience. On the flip side, it’s still better than WoW. That game has numerous books dedicated to its lore and yet the writing is still so bad that all characters could be successfully played by Kristen Stewart if they ever made a movie.

Okay, so I have a minor dilemma.
My level 80 character has a very pretty pair of shattered dragon wings I don’t want to have to get rid of. The character I want to wear the spinal blades isn’t levelled enough to be of any use whatsoever in LA atm (I’m fairly sure she’ll die the first time she gets in range of Scarlet’s wee bombs).
I want to use the shortcut to the final battle, but to do it, I need to wear the spinal blades.
Here’s the question:
Is it true that the Spinal Blades back item reverts to Account Bound (as opposed to soulbound) when you upgrade it?

The point is that it should not be hard to coordinate 150 people enough to take down the three knights.
That would be a relevant point if it was at all feasible to get 150 motivated people in one map in the first place.
I dunno, I’ve usually been on maps where there are 30+ per knight, and we don’t get it done because of idiots getting dragged and dead people waiting to be rezzed instead of waypointing (although I’ve been guilty of that myself on the green knight, for the love of God why is it so far from every waypoint?).
The other culprit is the blue knight’s little mender minions, of course. They’re a pain.
But mostly it’s down to stupidity and an inability to dodge.

What I don’t really understand is that if they’ve designed the knights around having 150 characters in a map…
Why don’t they institute “underflow” style maps for servers with low populations?
Or just abolish individual servers entirely? (Which would likely be bad for the overall community feel.)
Make it all one server and have overflows as necessary.
Mmm, gimme single-shard universe, gimme gimme!

Jory and Kas are still worlds above anything Bioware has ever written.
A couple whose sole purpose is to bombard us with their awkward display of love is somehow better than characters like Zevran, Anders, Thane or Wrex?
Yeah, no.
The Kasmeer + Marjory romance is on the level of Twilight. Good enough for an MMO as it caters to a wide audience but not something I would praise.
Fenris….
also, yeah, that’s something I wanted to point out too. It’s not fair to expect the same level of depth and complexity from an MMO as from a single player game like ME or DA.
Not for any other reason than that there are only so many resources to go around. While making a game like ME or DA it’s easier to focus on storyline because you’ve got the resources to do it – you have gameplay and mechanics and QA and all that off doing their own thing, and nobody is messing with your kitten before it’s done. In GW2, you have to work on the storyline while keeping in mind gameplay and mechanics and bugfixing because you have a hundred thousand gamers running around your world trying their best to break everything, as well as making sure that the game actually continues to run.
In order to have a storyline as complex as Mass Effect’s, let alone DA:O (we shan’t mention DA2 here) they would need twice or three times the staff of BW, at least.
So no, the story isn’t fabulous, but it’s pretty entertaining and doesn’t suffer from any too-terrible plot holes, and really, that’s all we can expect.
The only other game I know of that attempts even close to the level of output of GW2 is EVE Online, and they don’t even bother with story at all, it’s just basically ‘Here, have a new ship. Go, have a monocle that costs more than your entire salary. Walking in stations? What noooo.’

Jory and Kas are still worlds above anything Bioware has ever written
Can not compute.
He’s allegedly claiming that the affair between Kasmeer and Marjory is better script than anything Bioware’s writers could come out with in the Mass Effect series.
And he’s clearly stoned, because dear weeping baby Jesus, can we talk about Garrus Vakarian for a second? And Saren, let’s not forget Saren and basically the entire magnificent plotline of Mass Effect(although I saw a post elsewhere comparing Scarlet to Saren, which is cool.).
Anyway, I for one am very much in favour of lbgt representation in gaming, as was done (not badly, it’s got to be said) in this game but absolutely slammed out of the park in Mass Effect (although am I the only one who’s still sad that her FemShep couldn’t romance Ashley?)
To get back to the point, I rate the content a qualified pass because while the patch to the knight event made it very very hard to get to the final content (and I really hope you’re looking at that, Anet) the actual content is still fantastic and fun to play, which is really all I want from GW2.

It’s not a matter of integrated voice, actually you cannot cohordinate 150 people all together, there are problems of hierarchy, discipline, leadership. It would be a kittenting chaos.
I’m sorry, but that’s bull. 150 players is nothing – have you seen the kind of fleets that happen in EVE? And I’m not talking big corps, but incursion fleets, basically made up of great big PUGs (at least they were, bet they’re mostly specialized corps now, but not the point)
The point is that it should not be hard to coordinate 150 people enough to take down the three knights.
It certainly shouldn’t be beyond the capabilities of anyone who has actually managed to install and play the game to dodge when the big red AOE thing disappears and to waypoint when they’re properly dead and stop wasting people’s time.
I agree also. It’s not like it would even be hard to just count up the sizes of the files needed by the client and display the total, or whatever.
Or they could even just fix the progress bar to display a realistic representation of the progress, instead of what it’s doing now. It’s completely ridiculous to have the progress bar sit at 98% all the way from 40mb to 180.
Or they could post it somewhere. I was told by Support that they couldn’t do that because sometimes it downloads corrupted or missing files as well, but there’s an easy workaround for that. It reads: ‘Assuming that your game is up to date, and no files are missing, today’s update should be roughly 1.13GB’
That is not hard.
I finally got mine!
So excited!

(edited by Jaggedrain.6923)
well, just logged and found the chest waiting in my mail,
thank you for resolving the problem
Had you logged in yesterday with no chest, or is this the first time you’re checking for it?
Just to satisfy my own curiosity
ETA: I still don’t have a chest, so I’m hoping they haven’t run the new and improved script yet!
But…I’ve never been able to delete a letter that contains stuff. The ‘Delete’ button is always grayed out if the letter has anything in it.
Guys,
We are looking into this matter. We initially believed that anyone who earned a chest surely would receive one, and that is why the email refers to clearing the mailbox. We believed yesterday that the list was complete and all earned chests were distributed. However, we have noted continued questions about the matter and we are not discounting that there may be an issue. The team will get to the bottom of it and I’ll update you when we know more.
P.S. The “copy paste” complaints are sorta silly. When we have a distribution of thousands, if not tens of thousands of items, it makes sense to develop solid messaging to send those whose who contact us, no? While you might feel that each answer should be individually hand-crafted for you, I make no apologies for a well-written, clear, and concise “form letter” when it serves the purpose. Better than than having a dozen messages written just enough differently that players wonder “Does that mean what that other thing said, or is it somewhat different? Is that guy going to get something I don’t get?” So please forgive the “form letter” but please try to understand the absolute value of sending that form of response in specific cases. That’s value for us, for you, for greater justi… I mean for greater clarity!
Thanks for the clarification, Gaile.
Hopefully this will all be sorted out quickly, and I will not have to keep running back to my pc every five minutes to see what is going on.
P.S. Your point regarding the copy-paste answers is well-made and true. I apologize for kittening about it here and elsewhere, as I had not considered the sheer volume of support requests (or screaming hysterics, depending on your point of view) that are sure to be cluttering Support’s inboxes.
