Mordrem Invasion Update: 11 September 12:30 PM

I think the reddit.com thread “this event is a frantic stressful mess” hit the nail on the head.

What i like: different mordrem events, the locations chosen were picturesque the distance between them was fair. Apart from some scaling issues (which made it more advantageous for geared people with all the waypoint unlocked) the overall mechanics and gameplay of the event was nice.

However the design of this event was terrible. Because it was an event for newbies and people without guilds, I feel like this event failed even harder because it made people play in a way that was anti gw2.

No map wide bonus that encourages people to not act selfishly. This meant it was every person for themselves. Thus newbies fared worse than vets, which is not a desired outcome. The reason why newbies struggled is because they had to waypoint to get tags, spending silver. They also did less damage to mobs.

No progression while killing stuff. I know this was taken out to prevent farming. But it is also incentive to stay in one spot and kill the mobs giving loot. You could have taken champ bags out but at least given exp silver and karma, things a newbie needs.

Scaling was so bad it encouraged people to tag and run. This put more pressure on the use of waypoints to get around faster, and therefore disadvantaged newbies.

No reward if dc. Pretty self explanatory, but this problem has been around since world boss daily chests, so I won’t go into it here.

In all, vets expected more because over the past three years, you have shown us that you are capable of designing thoughtful events. You must have in mind the lowest common denominator/s. Here it was the tag and run mentality. I recognise that taking rewards out for killing mobs was taken out to stop the zerg and scale mentality, but it just hurt newbies, your target demographic, who is both poor and needs xp. Solution would have been to not have it scale up to champions.

To address the tag and run mentality you need map wide bonuses like in Save lion’s arch, crown pavilion and dry top.

If you think that’s being too conservative, I have a suggestion for design.

Another fair way to address tag and run is to lock all waypoints, have everyone start from the Morden vendor, and make it a good thing that you must get as far as possible. Thus, have easy events near the vendor, scale up harder in the far end of the map. And then the zerg will have to split up and eventually rejoin at the other side. If we beat all the events we get x. If we fail, we get y. This way it is not productive to tag and run, but it is helpful for people to push ahead for the rest of the map.

Ok that is all, I hope you enjoy reading my feedback.

Hi Wolf,
I am an experienced PvE player with close to 4K hours logged in game. I have over 2K of those hours on ele and about 1K on guardian. Almost all of those hours are dungeon hours.

My ele, guardian and thief are full ascended berserker/scholar. Weapons usually have force + night. Yes, I use damage modifier consumables.

I have a personal level of fractal 50. I know the pug strategies required for all the fractals. I know some organised strategies as well, such as portal trick in Cliffside. I swap weapons and traits as the situation demands. I can do pretty much everything required of ele/guardian/thief, and if I don’t I’m very nice and willing to learn.

I usually play at reset, and late at night in Australia (GMT +10). I play on a laptop however, which means that I am dead when there are a lot of animations happening at once (i.e. Mai Trin barrage). Please let me know if you’re interested. I’ve played with a few people from [WOLF] before, and the runs were generally very smooth.

Hi everyone,

I am an experienced PvE player with close to 4K hours logged in game. I have over 2K of those hours on ele and about 1K on guardian. Almost all of those hours are dungeon hours. Over the past year I have done dungeon tours in a stable, very experienced group.

My ele, guardian and thief are full ascended berserker/scholar. Weapons usually have force + night. My warrior is PS/EA exotic berserker/strength with a strength sigil in the greatsword. I have all the potions for regular dungeons and food (truffle steak / omnom ghosts /minotaur steak) on these 4 toons.

I have a personal level of fractal 50, and I do Fractal 50, Arah p1 and p2 almost everyday. I have TS, and know the strategies required for all the commonly run dungeons. I know some organised strategies as well, such as gs 5 guardian trick on Ooze in Arah P1. I swap weapons and traits as the situation demands. I can do pretty much everything required of ele/guardian/thief/warrior and if I don’t I’m very nice and willing to learn. As an indicator of skill, I can push Lupi, and survive through all Lupi’s phases in a 3 man on guardian (open). I don’t think I can duo him without him being in the wall for phase 3, especially if I’m being life-sucked (unless I’m on thief or warrior).

I usually play at reset, and late at night in Australia (GMT +10). I play on a laptop however, which means that I am dead when there are a lot of animations happening at once.

PM me if you want to recruit me or if you want to add me to your friend’s list for dungeons/fractals!

I’ve flushed the dns using cmd, and changed the dns provider to google’s, still stuck.

The client flashes when it gets to 27MB downloaded, and the download speed slows down to 0 kb/s. I looks like the client is disconnecting itself somehow, anyone got other ideas to fix? I tried the modifying the host as well, it did not work.

“The Fix:

Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)
Add this line at the bottom: 174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com
Save the file. If Notepad prompts you to save as a new file, you need to start over and run Notepad as administrator."

After the above steps, I started the client in Administrator mode, didn’t expect it to work but it did! Happy Wintersday!

what exactly does ‘start over and run notepad as administrator’ mean?

Title: fractured environment

Introduction

How can the Devs make the entire fractal interesting? A boss with huge hp who can oneshot you is not fun at all. What will become of fractals at higher levels? Are the instabilities enough to make a name for fotm, for gw2 endgame, for the future of mmos as a whole?

Proposal overview

Make the fractals more fractured at 50+ by:
1) having mobs from another fractal B appear in fractal A.
2) more randomised branches in the dungeon path (eg Mossman / tree)
3) randomly switch to fractal B while completing fractal A.

While this may seem like a cool idea it would probably be really frustrating. I don’t think high end content should be based on randomness. Imagine getting more dredge in your dredge. Imagine getting stuck / spending lots of time because of bad luck. Might be fun couple of times but eventually people would just rage (like now on dredge).

The idea isn’t to multiply trash. It is a way to make challenging content without dragging out fights via huge boss hp bar. Imagine a higher level fractal with the same enemies as a low level fractal, but just moved into a higher level mechanic.

It would be the reverse of Mossman in level 30.

Instead of the boss causing havoc and then disappearing, he stays – you kill him – but the environment changes to, say, snowblind. This forces the players to pay attention and work as a team.

You’re right, it could be rage inducing. But I’m hoping that the combinations get properly tested. The content should to hard enough to justify leaderboards, afterall.

Title: fractured environment

Introduction

How can the Devs make the entire mini-dungeon interesting? A boss with huge hp who can oneshot you is not fun at all. What will become of fractals at higher levels? Are the instabilities enough to make a name for fotm, for gw2 endgame, for the future of mmos as a whole?

Proposal overview

Make the fractals more fractured at 50+ by:
1) having mobs from another fractal B appear in fractal A.
2) more randomised branches in the dungeon path (eg Mossman / tree)
3) randomly switch to fractal B while completing fractal A.

Goal of the proposal

From the players point of view, this adds more variety and challenge to fractals. Bonds made through overcoming the unexpected are one of the most positive experiences the game can offer.

Devs will be happy to note that the randomness of the environment will further increase the importance of support roles, promoting build diversity. Player to player interaction is also likely to increase.

Proposal mechanism

1) and 2) should work in a similar way to Mossman in level 30.

With regards to 3), the problem is that most bosses cannot evolve in difficulty in the way that increasing fractal levels requires of them. All we are seeing is bigger health bars and bigger numbers on the screen.

Suggested Mechanic for 3)

Increase difficulty additively (through mistlock instabilities and ‘fractured environment’) , rather than along the hp/damage plane.

  • Instead of clearing trash and wailing on the mini boss, players enter a mini boss room only for the environment to flicker and shift into a half state between two fractals.
  • Fractal A’s mini boss must be killed after a mechanic from fractal B is completed.
  • Eg the clown car dredge boss (fractal A) has been relocated to old tom’s poison room (fractal.
  • This mechanic randomly selects Fractal B’s environment.

Why is this proposal necessary?

Gw2 combat, without the ‘holy trinity’, requires the environment to give an impetus to party support and control. Mistlock instabilities are a step in the right direction, but they are hardly felt at some levels. This means the problem is still not being properly addressed.

Risks

  • not balanced
  • too long
  • bugs

Conclusion

  • A fractured environment using 1), 2) and especially 3) as proposed is what mistlock instabilities strive to be, but so much better.
  • Note: Instabilities and fractured environment are not mutually exclusive.
