We all had fun & props to our commander & group for working together.
Thanks for the hour of fun!

I frapsed the best part of it for a bit. Total skill lag for 5+ minutes. It was awesome.

Reduce WXP Based On Num_Attackers

in Suggestions

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

Excited about the new WvW Abilities, I spent several hours in WvW last night. Unfortunately, the current WXP system rewards players in a way that detrimental to the overall WvW experience.

While the majority of players enjoy zerging, one of the reasons that WvW works so well, and in fact, one of the core design philosophies of GW2 WvW, is that smaller groups and even individuals can contribute and make a difference. This is evident by the supply system, consisting of yaks and camps to be killed/captured, as well as the individual guard posts.

Obviously, it’s going to be hard to balance WXP across diffferent styles of play. How can one system adequately reward zergers, roaming groups, and individual scouts on an even level. It’s impossible to get perfect.

But as it stands right now, it’s so far out of whack that I feel it’s game breaking.

I’d love to see some metrics to back up my assumptions on this, but it seems clear that players have two choices:

1. Run with the zerg, gaining a healthy amount of WXP per hour by tagging as many enemies as possible.

2. Doing stuff outside the zerg, and making a tiny fraction of that amount of WXP per hour.

After playing for several hours, getting into plenty of fights while killing yaks, flipping camps, dodging the enemy zerg and ganking the slow and the overly brave, I had barely made a single World Rank.

During the same time, I had a guildmate in the same BL, who was running with our zerg. He made it to level 6 World Rank in the same amount of time. Meaning he made more than five times as much WXP by just running with the zerg.

And in this case, the zerg was running around alot and not engaged in any long battles. I can only imagine what the difference would be like then?

Proposed Solutions:

1. Divide the amount of WXP given out for each enemy defeat by the number of people receiving credit. (or the num_attackers)

2. Divide the amount of WXP awarded by the number of friendly players in the area.

I think the second is the way to go. I hate thieves as much as the next guy, but it seems troublesome that they get the same amount of credit for a solo kill that someone in the zerg gets for every person they happen to tickle with an AE in a large battle.

Chat Still Defaults to Last Channel?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

And your suggestion is, I only see a complaint in that post?
AFAIK that is how it works in every other game, (not only MMO’s but any game with a chat function), and cant really see how else it should work

In every other MMO, you are able to set a default channel (via toggle if you like).

This means that everything you type will automatically go to the channel you have set as default, unless you prepend it with a /gu /t /p /m etc. In which case it will be directed appropriately.

I’m honestly confused how this isn’t obvious to everyone else, although it’s probably because I started playing MMOs back in the days before voice chat, when in game text was the ONLY way we could coordinate.

Chat Still Defaults to Last Channel?

After all this time, does chat still really default to the last text you sent?

So if I am in some long discussion in /guild or /party, and I reply to someone who whispers me, then my default channel becomes whispering that person?

1) Does any other game work this way?
2) I know I am old school, but am I the only one who ever types to multiple people?
3) How can this still not have been changed over the past several patches? Is it just me?

Yup, you’re right. He has level 2 in Siege Bunker and it costs 6 points to get to level 3. I’ll edit my post to correct it.

Anet just doesn’t understand the game they poorly tried to copy (daoc) despite all their hype of “Oh we loved DAOC”

A lot of the DAOC Realm Abilities became some core concepts in GW2 character design.

http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/content/realm-abilities

I agree that they’re not nearly as impactful and defining as DAOC’s were, but long gone are the days when designers could get away with that level of affect in an earned system like WvW Abilities.

WvW Abilities List?

in WvW

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

Have they released a full or partial list of the WvW Abilities that will be purchasable with World Ability Points?

I searched and couldn’t find anything beyond the March 22nd Blog post: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/world-vs-world-introducing-world-ranks-and-more/

World Ability Points can be spent on unique WvW abilities that improve your character in whatever roll you may find yourself in—anything from increasing the amount of supply you can hold to increasing defense from siege attacks to new siege weapon skills. You can train multiple times in the same ability, which increases the effectiveness of the ability, but also increases the cost.

Is it something along the lines of this (from a discussion on these forums about 4 months back)?

Were I to design a Realm Ability like system for WvW, this is what I would do. Maybe some of these will give anet some ideas, who knows.

WvW Ability List

- 1 hour reuse timer on each ability
- 3 levels for each ability
- Ability points earned a max of 1 per week
- Requires completion of WvW weekly (points given for kills, captures, and defenses)
- World based, so you need to start over from scratch if you move to another server

Name – Effectiveness per level – Description

Scrounger – 5/10/15 – Player summons x supply.
Combat Repairer – 50/75/100 – Player takes x% less damage when repairing. (30 seconds)
Combat Resser – 45/70/95 – Player takes x% less damage when ressing. (30 seconds)
Yak Motivator – 10/20/30 – Player gives targeted supply yak an x% speed bonus that stacks with other bonuses. (120 seconds)
Yak Protector – 45/70/95 – Player gives targeted supply yak a buff providing x% damage reduction. (30 seconds)
Siege Protector – 25/45/65 – Player gives targeted siege item a buff providing x% damage reduction. (30 seconds)
Guard Leader – 25/45/65 – Player gives targeted veteran guard a buff providing x% damage reduction. (30 seconds)
Battlefield Healer – 50/100/150 – Player gains x% healing bonus when ressing downed or killed enemies. (30 seconds)
Pocket Sieger – 15/30/45 – Player MacGyver’s together a makeshift version of the selected siege item that works at x% effectiveness compared to a normal one.
Secret Passager – n/a – Player can port into a contested waypoint due to knowledge of secret tunnels.
Dodgey Sieger – 25/45/65 – Player takes x% less damage when operating siege equipment. (60 seconds)

Can anyone think of anymore?

Can anyone steer me to a post or blog with more info? The new system sounds intriguing.

“Our opponents almost always outnumber us, and they are always complaining about the long queues to get into ANY of their BG”

I am sorry but once he said this he lost all credibility on this thread. And why would he have been talking about tier one when he goes on to mention that that for the past six weeks they have been playing in tier two? Also I am curious where he hears all this complaining about long queues to get into any of OUR bg’s? I am just here to separate the bs from the truth.

I play mostly during NA. And in this thread here, I was really surprised to see your server arguing with each other about “taking spots” in unassigned battlegrounds. We’ve never had that problem on Blackgate.

I think most of SoR are straight up WvW addicts.

This is starting to be true.

Sadly, this addiction from a lot of SoR’s community has made elitism rampant among us. Drama-filled elitism. People who are only having fun so long as they’re winning. Players or other guilds that may not be as skilled as some others are regularly being told to get out of WvW or outright being called a waste of space.

It’s childish, disrespectful, and wrong. I not only disagree with it, I heavily condemn it.

The anger towards your guild had nothing to do with an elitest attitude or being lesser skilled.

Your representatives at the server meeting requested an entire borderland for your guild as its so large, we accomidated this request by giving you green.

Your guild then preceded to come into red locking out members from the various other guilds that were assigned to red.

The outrage was more than justified.

Blackgate is not without our challenges, that’s for sure. But too many people in WvW has never been one of them.

Hey fellow GW2 WvW Players! Right now Blackgate is really desperately looking for any transfers (NA/EU/Oceanic) to strengthen our Blackgate server. There are rooms for everyone to WvW. The worst queue time in EBG is around 10min but the rest of the borderlands are still instant join so no queue time here in Blackgate.

I wanted to chime in and back up what Nirvii says. Blackgate is a server filled with really awesome players and some of the best guilds in GW2. For the past 6 weeks, BG has constantly been #1 in Tier 2.

Our opponents almost always outnumber us, and they are always complaining about the long queues to get into ANY of their BGs. I didn’t realize GW2 still had queues, because I never see them. The only exception might be in EBG right after reset, but even then it’s only taken a few minutes for me to get in.

If you’re you’re not afraid to fight when outnumbered, if you’re don’t want to deal with a bunch of drama and egos, and you’re looking for a long-term place to call home where compelling and competitive WvW is always only one click away, Blackgate is definitely worth looking into.

Guide to “Run and Gun” Build for WvW

in Warrior

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

My build is pretty close: http://bit.ly/YGvlKd

I use Rifle and Sword/Horn when moving around, but I swap out the Rifle for the Longbow in Keep/tower attacks and defenses.

I have a couple of different armor sets I use, but most of the time I use my full Glass Cannon build with all berserker gear and rune of divinity.

After a ton of experimentation, I’ve mostly settled on the 0/20/0/30/20 build:

Traits
Crack Shot – Faster rifle recharge and piercing
Rending Strikes – Vulnerability on crit

Leg Specialist – 1 second root (I switch to +longbow range when I switch to the bow)
Lung Cap – Faster shout recharge
Vigorous – Shouts heal

Signet Master – Faster signet recharge
Mobile strikes – Movement skills break immobilize

Skills

Healing Surge – Full adrenalin
Justice Shout – Heal & might
Signet of Rage – Full adrenalin
Shake it off – Heal & remove condition & break stun
Signet of Fury – Might/speed/crit

Sigils

Rifle: Force – +5 Damage
Sword: Hydromancy – immobilizes nearby enemies for 3 secs on weapon switch
Warhorm: Bloodlust – Power stacks
Longbow: Force – +5 Damage

Rifle Tactics

- I always travel with sword and warhorn which lets me avoid enemy zergs and choose my battles.

- With two full adrenalin refreshes, I can use Kill Shot twice at the start of the fight and again every 27 seconds.

- The shout heals allow me to keep my health up from minor damage every 10 seconds.

- If I start taking big damage, I dodge backwards once or twice then switch to sword/horn

- If one or more melee are on me, the Hydromancy freezes them for 3 seconds when I swap to sword/horn

- Sword leap is huge for escapes. Runspeed as well. And warhorn 5 gives endurance regen which lets me dodge forward more often.

- While fleeing, my shouts provide healing and condition remove/stun breaks

- Sword leap lets me break any immobility debuffs because of Mobile Strikes

- I can almost always escape long enough to get out of combat regen to full health, then loop back and switch back to rifle.

Longbow Tactics

- Adrenalin refreshes let me do Combustive Shot every 27 seconds for the AE fire field

- I immediately follow Combustive with Arcing area which does big AE damage, due to fire field’s delay, they both hit about the same time, which is great for wall defenders or enemies outside a keep.

- Switching from leg specialist to longbow range gives Arcing arrow the same range as Combustive shot

- The shout heals allow me to move to into the line of fire long enough to get those two AE bow abilities off, then I immediately dodge backwards out of range.

Overall

I love the mobility and escape ability, which lets me survive in a glass cannon build. (still requires tremendous situational awareness to know when bug out) Rifle is great at rooting any that flee and can do big damage to enemies not paying attention. The longbow is awesome in larger battles for the AE damage and can help make a real difference in siege situations.

I think the warrior needs help in some areas and it’s certainly not over-powered. I’m not convinced there is an issue with burst damage on any class in the game, but if there turns out to be, I suspect might stacking is the real issue. Putting some kind of cap on that might not be popular, but it may be necessary to keep people from posting screen shots of high damage attacks.

I think that where the warrior really shines is in versatility. There’s always a new weapon set to try, a new trait build, new armor types, and new rune sets. I’m always creating new sets of armor to support my latest idea for weapon/build, which gives me a reason to keep PvEing, and provides me with some horizontal goals even though I’ve hit the vertical limit.

Kill Shot: Myth vs Reality

in Warrior

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

Kill shot is possibly THE most situational ability in GW2. Crits over 10k only happen when one glass cannon hits another glass cannon. Random screen shots of omglookatthatdamage are of little value since there’s no contextual information regarding other factors such as vulnerability and might stacks.

A thief can kill a glass cannon rifle warrior in 3-4 seconds coming out of stealth. In fact, anyone that gets in melee range of a GC warrior is going to completely shut the class down. Any ranged damage forces the GC warrior to have to reposition, and AoE/ground effect attacks prohibit the use of Kill Shot given the 2+ second cast time.

As anyone who spends time in WvW knows, battles tend to be very mobile affairs. In medium to large battles, Kill Shot tends to be ineffective. A warrior must run up to within 1500 meters of the enemy, then kneel down for 2+ seconds before firing a shot. Even if the shot happens to hit (a big if), it’s not going to one shot anyone, and the person who is hit will simply move to the back of his group and heal up, since all the other Rifle abilities are 1200 range and the warrior has no ability to follow up on that one shot. Most of the decent rifle warriors just switch to long bow for mid to large scale battles.

In small groups battles of 3-8, GC rifle warriors can sometimes be effective, but only against inexperienced or poorly skilled opponents. Most enemies know enough that the dude kneeling every 10 seconds trying to take someone’s head off shouldn’t be left alone. In any sort of even match up, a single player can completely negate the effectiveness of a GC rifle warrior by getting into melee range with him. In this situation, the warrior has to run or he will die. And running usually only works if the enemy gives up and decides to focus on someone else. Against players of even mediocre skill, a Rifle warrior is much more effective with toughness and vitality gear instead of glass cannon gear.

Where GC Rifle Warriors really excel, and what gets all the headlines with the “Nerf Kill Shot” posts, is in situations where the enemy is vastly outnumbered. A GC rifle warrior involved in a 3 on 1, 5 on 2, or 12 on 3 battle is going to do extremely well because not only are they likely to be left alone, but the enemy is also going to be so worried about everyone else that they’re far less likely to notice the Kill Shot animation in time to dodge. With stacks of vulnerability and might, a GC rifle warrior can sometimes crit a lone enemy for 11-12k damage. Of course, the fact that the enemy was going to die due to being outnumbered, whether the warrior was there or not, does little to stop people from posting a screen shot and complaining about it.

The bottom line is that a Glass Cannon Rifle Warrior is only effective when fighting completely new players or when they already greatly outnumber the enemy to the point that the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Anet sees this as well, as they often use the warrior class to point out the difficulty in balancing classes for both the casual player and the hardcore. There’s a reason you rarely see warriors in tPvP, and that’s because skilled players can easily mitigate warrior effectiveness.

He/she is on a regular character, just happens to be in the ArenaNet guild (so probably is a real employee). When you represent that guild you get the ArenaNet icon. Nothin suspicious here, just ArenaNet playing their own game (that’s cool, right?).

Given the nature of competitive PvP and how suspicious everyone tends to be about everything their opponents do, I have to question the wisdom of having openly flagged Anet characters participating in WvW.

Not only does it open door to a bunch of distraction from posts like this one, it also creates confusion for players who will assume that these characters are GMs or Admins.

In DAOC, Mythic specifically prohibited employees from telling people in-game that they worked for the company, in an effort to avoid the appearance of any impropriety. CSRs wouldn’t even appear as characters, but were spherical gems so it was always absolutely clear who was and wasn’t a GM. Any employee that had a character on a live server had to earn everything in game just like everyone else because they wouldn’t give out free gold or experience to protect the integrity of the in game world.

Of course, the whole black lion gem system makes GW2 a different beast and I imagine they have to give employees some access to gems.

My Warrior has over 3k attack, 3k armor, 27k hit points, and 70% critical once I enter combat.

I think you’re mistaken on your numbers, or perhaps there’s a display error on your hero panel. Maybe you could share a screen shot or your gear and build.

The only way I can think to get close to that would be with Pow/Vit/Tough gear with food buffs and a sharpening stone. Even then, you’re sacrificing precision and crit damage which means you wouldn’t be coming even close to the big numbers people are complaining about.

Even if you killed 25 mobs to get full stacks of Bloodlust or Perception, fired off your Fury signet, and stood over a banner, I don’t see these as likely numbers. I suppose if you did all this while also getting a huge stack of might from groupmates, it might be possible. Even then, your +crit damage is going to be low.

Boon of Lyssa could maybe do it, but that only lasts for 5 seconds everytime you fire off your elite.

WvW + Zerg + Culling + Higher Range = Dodge is not an option -.-

Once again, a warrior cannot have every trait at the same time, and any build that includes Improved Culling comes at a significant trade off in other areas.

Honestly, any class that has bugs they would like to see fixed would do well to make a weekly post listing the top 3 or top 5 bugs. These should be actual bugs ( tool tip vs reality) and not design change requests. This will give the live team an easily digestible number of items to work on fixing that are likely to have a good bang for the buck in pleasing the community.

While a huge master bug list is good in theory, in reality it becomes very daunting to review and act upon.

1 – Warriors have a signet to instantly gain 3 bars of adrenaline, not to mention the various adrenaline regenerating traits.

Signet of Fury is on a 30 second cool down and gives warrior’s full adrenalin. Adrenal regeneration traits are pretty useless since a Rifle warrior rarely has time to wait around to for adrenalin to tick up to full.

2 – it’s 1.75s cast time… And I’d have to assume it is affected by Quickness.

The actual cast time is 2.2 seconds, which is an eternity in a game where most abilities are insta-cast. It is affected by quickness, although it only seems to shave about .75 seconds of the cast time.

3 – Successfully dodging it does very little since the warrior doesn’t lose adrenaline after failing his ability.

Successfully dodging Kill Shot starts the 10 second refresh timer before the warrior can fire again. Are you really going to stand around for 10 seconds and let him get off his next shot? Giving a glass cannon of any class 10 seconds to tee off on you, especially when you’re a glass cannon yourself is going to get you killed.

I disagree that perma swiftness, extremely powerful dashes on sword/greatsword, easy condition removal, and highest base defensive stats in the game aren’t good for surviving

You’re assuming that a warrior can spec all his trait lines and load all his skills and abilities at the same time. Please point out the specific build, weapon, ability, and gear load out that you consider overpowered and I will give you a detailed analysis of the pluses and minuses of it. It’ll be a far more effective way to evaluate class balance than just throwing a bunch of empty superlatives. Imagine if we listed every possible thing any thief of any build, weapon, gear, rune, and sigel set was ever able to do. Anyone who didn’t actually understand the class would certainly say, “Yeah, that sounds overpowered.”

Kill shot is possibly THE most situational ability in GW2. As you mentioned, crits over 10k only happen when one glass cannon hits another glass cannon. Random screen shots of omglookatthatdamage are of little value since there’s no contextual information regarding other factors such as vulnerability and might stacks.

A thief can kill a class cannon warrior in 3-4 seconds coming out of stealth. In fact, anyone that gets in melee range of a GC warrior is going to completely shut the class down. Any ranged damage forces the GC warrior to have to reposition, and AoE and ground effect attacks prohibit the use of Rifle Shot given the 2+ second cast time.

Portals/Downedstate/Giant Grubs ruin the game

in WvW

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

Full disclosure, I was raised by a family of grubs.

Portals can be annoying, they can also be cool. But they are part of the game. Downed State is most assuredly part of the game, and not going anywhere soon. Giant Grubs are part of the game, but please leave them alone.

Unless we want to play the MMO equivalent of two cavemen throwing rocks at each other, (and as I type this, that’s starting to sound cooler and cooler) there are going to be aspects of the game that you dislike. Without them, WvW would be boring.

People are always making posts about this one thing or that one thing that is “ruining the game.” The truth is that there will always be something that people will think is ruining the game. Even when the only class is the Caveman and the only ability is Throw Rock, some people will complain that rocks crit for way too much damage, while others complain that they never do enough.

Instead of making another complaint thread, how about posting a story about that time you held off the zerg with two level 17 Asura’s, an arrow cart, and 50 pieces of candy corn. Or the time you had an epic 1 on 1 battle that lasted 15 minutes with that heal specced guardian that just wouldn’t die and seemed to have /laugh on a hotkey. Or the time you were being chased by 20 angry SoR, only to have the WvW server come down just in time to save you from certain death, and how you immediately ran to the forums to make an inane post to brag about it while waiting for the BGs to return. Just sayin…

A Warrior's Right Skill Bar

in Warrior

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

banners are persistent buffs with virtually 100% uptime, most of which offer stats not available from boons (helaing power, boon duration, flat precision, crit damage, vitality, toughness). banner of tactics and and discipline also offer very strong active abilities, with an aoe heal (3,840) + 6s regen, and 10s of fury in aoe (respectively) on a 10s CD, which can be used by everyone in your group.

Banners are the definition of situational. In pve they can be handy, especially in boss fights, but when it comes to other areas, especially wvw, they are only useful in the most extreme and unusual situations. I think the OP is mostly correct here.

as for stances having no focused trait line, i suggest looking at the toughness trait line, where you can get a stance-focused trait on each major tier.

There is only one stance focused trait in that line, which is Sure Footed, which increases stance duration. Last Stand and Defy band have no affect on your selected stances, except to offer very ineffective short term (1-2 second) version of them, that do not stack with the ones you have loaded.

Change one of those to reduce stance cooldown by 20%, and add another one that makes stances replace endurance, health, or adrenalin when used, and you would have more of a proper trait line for stances. The OP is correct on this.

your comparison of fear me with stomp is baffling. one is a aoe blow + blast finisher, and another is an aoe fear. these have literally nothing in common other than the fact that they’re disruptive to the enemy.

Yes and no. Functionally, they are both different. In reality, they are usually competing for the same spot on our hot bar and they often are used towards the same goal. I like them both and find them both useful in different situations.

rampage sucks, because transforms suck in general due to the way they work. warriors got it better than some other classes by having TWO good elites, instead of just one. war banner gives you a massive buff to your group’s damage output, while doubling as a revival. it’s good at turning around fights, and pushing them in your favor. it’s a more powerful version of signet of rage in an aoe, with a longer CD.

See my banner comment above. I really feel like my elite slot is a waste. I use the signet, but only because I find the other two options to be even less useful. Something that gave us stability plus a significant reduction in damage (75%) for 15 seconds would be a better fit in my opinion. It IS our elite slot, after all.

Fallout 3, FNV etc did this on death, i’m used to it.

i like the fade-to-greyscale effect also.

I don’t mind the greyscale effect or anything else, just the repeated camera moving.

It’s like trying to watch something on TV and having an annoying sibling keep putting their hand in front of your face every few seconds and laughing. Sure, you can immediately knock their hand out of the way so you don’t miss too much, but it gets old very quickly when repeatedly done every few seconds.

And that math fail of some other poster was pretty funny, “5:1 is an unusually bad ratio” – as someone pointed out, if you have a 5:1 ratio, someone else must die 5 times while only killing you once, in return (statistically). What has happened to today’s educational system.

Yes, what has happened? Since everyone who touches an enemy player gets kill credit, your zero-sum gain theory is incorrect.

If 5 people fight 5 other people, it’s possible, even likely, that each person in that fight will end up with 5 kills and 1 death. (assuming there are no survivors)

/WvW Chat Channel for Commanders?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lensar.4920

Lensar.4920

Q. Can anyone think of a reason not add an additional chat channel for commanders of a world, usable from any zone on the server?

Ultimately, WvW is about the coordination of very large groups of people, across as many as four borderland areas, and throughout multiple time zones twenty-four seven.

A fair number of people in the online gaming community use some form of voice chat, since it aids in organization and coordination. Unfortunately, while voice chat is extremely effective for groups of 2 to 25 or so, the nature of audio communication isn’t conducive to scaling on a massive level. 300+ people in the same voice chat would be complete chaos.

It’s very impractical (and often difficult or even impossible) for most people to be on two voice chats at the same time. And since most gaming/guild groups each have their own unique voice chat, (some on vent, some on TS, some on Mumble, others on Google+ Hangouts, etc), it creates a silo effect with multiple groups segregated into their own sphere of communication.

The addition of /wvw chat for commanders would allow server wide organization and cross communication, mitigating the need for an out-of-game communication and coordination solution for the people focused on WvW.

As it stands now, the only in-game means for commanders in different borderlands to communicate with each other is through the /whisper system. Otherwise, commanders have to join a “command” voice channel someplace, which in most cases is mutually exclusive from them being in their normal guild or group voice chat.

An additional problem with the /whisper system, and the chat system over all, is that unlike most other MMOs where you can set a default chat channel, GW2 defaults to whatever chat you used last.

This is compounded by the fact that many voice chat programs default to the left control key for push-to-talk, and GW2 uses left control and mouse click to send a link into the last chat channel you used, regardless of whether you had hit enter to start typing or not.

The end result is usually something ugly like:
To Thor: <Healing Signet>
To Thor: <Healing Signet>
To Thor: <Healing Signet>

Bottom line, I think having an optional server-wide channel for commanders to coordinate would benefit both the game and community. And while they’re at it, I’d love to also see them add a default chat option as well as the ability to unbind left Cont + Mouse Click from automatically dumping what you click on into chat.
