My in game performance is still at about 15-20 fps while idling in lions arch. That is with the auto detect settings and some other things turned off/down. Not sure if this is because of the client reading so much data from the hard drive in such a short amount of time, or if the client just needs to be optimised more for my specific macbook model.
For me the client is rather unplayable atm, especially since I like to play in wvw mostly, the lag when trying to look around or turn drops my fps to 0 until it catches up, and the general fps is just not enough for me to play. The graphics in game do look a lot better. though my characters clothing is still tearing and looking discoloured at the login screen.
Keep up the good work
My Specs:
Model: MacBook Pro with Retina Display
RAM: 16gb
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB
I noticed when using my air pods that the clients sound does not play through them. If I am listening to itunes for instance, or if I just have them in my ears, the sound from the client for gw2 still comes from my macbook speakers for some reason. Not sure why only the client sounds are not going through the bluetooth airpods.
Also still experiencing lots of lag that makes it very hard to play wvw atm, and some random crashes when standing still chatting, and just general fps drops alot still.
MacBook Pro: (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)

Do we know if there is a chance for the alpha to be released this xmas? Im dying to give it a go while i have free time.
Woo! cant wait to try the beta/alpha for this client, a real client soon!
=D
Go to your applications, and click on the guild wars 2 icon and select “Show package contents” —> “Contents” —> “MacOS” —>"cider". when you run it like that it runs it through the terminal, and the client will show and run, only thing is you will likely have to start it open using that cider.exe every time u play. Thats worked for me when the window doesn’t want to show, hope it helps till the new client comes out.
Any news on when the mac client is going into public beta? I’m starting to get anxious waiting, super excited thinking about having a native client that lets me play at anything better than “Best Performance”. Any information you guys have for us would be awesome, keep us in the loop.
Yah, I just hope it gets done this summer so I can try it out before the next term of school starts up… wishful thinking I know but I dream… Really hope some good progress gets made so I can play this on my mac again.
Bumping this just hoping for some info, playing ffxiv right now mostly becouse I hate rebootin to Windows to play, and thankfully ffxiv has a good client for Mac even though it is cider. Would like to know how he native Mac client is coming ????
Out of curiosity, has any Mac OS X user tried Parallels Desktop for Mac?
It supports 64 bit windows, allows you to boot into your mac operating system and you would be able to install 64 bit Guild Wars.
Its been a long time since I used Parallels, however just thinking, it could run Gw2 just as good as w.i.n.e. with the added bonus of accessing more memory due to 64bit support.
Unfortunately it is an additional cost so I am unwilling to purchase it just to test a theory as I do not play games on OSX. However if someone already uses parallels desktop or has access to it, I would be intrigued to find out how Gw2 performs with it.
Yep, I have parallels desktop with a 64 bit windows 8.1 installed in it. Tried using the gaming only option for it and a bunch of tweaked settings, but to get any performance out of it i have to go to the best performance settings in gw2. Sadly the cider wrap runs faster, just crashes all the time, I would not use parallels for it.
I have been using a bootcamp partition for gw2, as it is the only way atm to really enjoy playing the game. Im on a mid 2015 macbook pro 15".
Tried Elder scrolls out just because they have a native client, the client works so bloody well, but sadly i don’t care for their game. So it is very possible to have a very good “native” mac client for gw2, i know it is not gonna happen or even get a response, but just throwing that info out there.
bump in the hopes of maybe getting a response from anet.
I just want a working mac client, that performs like the windows one does. In boot camp I can play the game on max graphics perfectly fine and I never crash, on the mac side, I have to play with all graphics settings on low except for shaders and animation.
I really wish ANET would actually produce the client we all believed they had said we were getting, and not more empty promises.
At this point, I just want to play an MMO where it is made for my mac, hopefully it is GW2 because I love this game, but being ignored because you want a company to give you what they said they were going to give you, is just frustrating and disheartening.
That is a new feature in El Capitan. It’s separate to the USB booting that is available on all macs without a disc drive. Though the feature may actually not carry across to 2011 MBP’s, I would assume it does however. It’s software based, rather than EFI/hardware based.
If it does work on 2011 mbp’s that sounds very promissing
I’ve upgraded to El Captain and unfortunately my hopes of bootcamping were crushed…. it still asks for a Windows CD giving no option to use an ISO
Even worse news: the game even on worse settings continues to choke my fps and my toon continues to walk like 10 meters before coming to a full stop.
This kills my pvp and pve experience as the game has many jump puzzles (even if they aren’t that hard) and when im on pvp when i try to dodge to any side, the only way he goes is rolling forward… this is very disgusting.
After you go past that it will give you an option on where to get the windows file from. The boot camp installer actually only uses the ISO, the selection option is just choosing an internet source or the ISO option (if you try and use a disc it gives you a link for boot camp help on how to make it an ISO file). I found this out when I installed Windows 8 into my boot camp partition, tried using a disk and it made me convert it.
I am using OSX EI Capitan, and boot camp works perfectly, I installed with the ISO file. Guild Wars 2 works so well on boot camp, can actually play the game with all settings on high now as well, and do the new maps without crashing.
We really need a working mac client, I want to play game like this on my mac, saves me a lot of hard drive space and rebooting is annoying.
Probably wait for the mac client for FFXIV online. it will be using middleware to apparently, but at least they said there going to be dedicated to constantly trying to improve the client and make it better, and they will have SUPPORT for it.
Uhhh… That’s an awful idea. Because… they already released their mac client back in July with Heavensward. It, like GW2, was powered by Cider. It was so so awful that they canned it and just offered everyone refunds. There was a whole lot of press about it. Was quite the screw up. When I say awful I mean just really really awful. At least GW2 is somewhat playable on OS X… Sort of.
Yes you are correct, but in yoshida’s statement following that event, he explained it all out, and then on top of the full refunds went on to further explain that they had then hired outside help (engineers and such specialized in mac), and that they would only re release it when it worked.
And that their mac client (yes a cider port) would be worked on continuously, receiving both normal updates, and middleware updates. So I’m just waiting to see how it will perform when they re release it, and ill decide from their, some cider ports can work very well. Not to mention he said they were going to work towards making use of the new “Metal” in mac, to make the clients performance difference hopefully close to none.
Unlike arena net they instantly took steps to make up for their mistake and to re assure the mac customer base, and to give them all the information on what they were planning to do very quickly.
Much better than what anet is doing.
Yah, I’m waiting to see what they do. But if nothing changes, just on the fact that they don’t give mac users any support, and that they try to bury us, I’m going to more than likely move to a different MMO. Probably wait for the mac client for FFXIV online. it will be using middleware to apparently, but at least they said there going to be dedicated to constantly trying to improve the client and make it better, and they will have SUPPORT for it.
Either way I’m getting close to moving on to another MMO and getting my money back. Rather disappointed in anet.
What they don’t realize is that if they had a proper native mac client, and actually made use of the mac software, all mac gamers who look for MMO’s, would more then likely come to GW2.
The game itself is amazing, and compared to other MMO’s I think its probably the best one. So if you put that plus a native mac client together, even if it costs a bit to get it working properly, In the end it would probably be worth the risk.
That is just what I think, but I realize that since the support for mac has been removed and no devs respond to our posts, the likelihood of getting a real client is none existent,
which makes me sad because now I’m looking to final fantasy online. they at least said that they hired outside help and will be working on making it work properly in the future, hopefully soon, whether it is native or not, they have the support. (although I hope and dream for either game having a native client)
Here is to dreaming…
yah ever since the update to HOT my client crashes every 10 min now, no matter the graphic settings…this game would be the best if mac users had an actual client, I’m depressed….
Just to make it seem more important..somehow…all my traits and skills and hero points are gone and i can’t get it back cause of the no refund thing as well…plz fix…
I’d love to see s/s for a weapon set with thief, or just have the option to wield only one sword, but give it a a unique set of attack options different from s/d, s/p, and the s/s option if it ever becomes viable. Would be really awesome to have those as weapon choices i think.
Haha, I may try it at some point but I’m enjoying the build I made cause its not universally used so I feel unique thanks for the tips though :$
Switch servers then lol, I’m having loads of fun, I barely ever die anymore from being ganked on this new server, and I’ve been winning 1 vs 3 and so on, it’s a blast so far lol
Hey, if u want help with a build/armour set send me a tell in game and I can link u mine, final stats are 3,050 attack, 2410 armour, 50% crit chance, 122% crit dmg and 16665 hp. So much fun lol, specially in some 3 vs 1 situations, I kitten ed alot of people off yesterday lol I’m assuming when I kept winning those as I roamed
It’s all about how u try to escape from em, there easy to avoid if u just use c/d or black powder and then stealth, get some distance and then stealth. I only die really in 1 vs 5s if i decide to try and get a kill even though i know ill die, i generally go for the squishy zerk thief’s in groups lol. easy targets
I was on a t2 server until recently, and i did find em but generally more showed up, was in t1 for 2 weeks and it sucked cause i only roam and people in t1 only seem to know how to gank >.>
Went to t3 now and I’m having loads of fun catching people alone or in duos, so much fun killing people and not being mobbed very often, happens very rarely now, and most times i can avoid it less i feel like trying to get a kill before i die.
Were anything but the best, and in the end it’s the user of the class that makes or break it, it’s the same with any class. Ive fought good players in all classes and really bad ones, it all ends with how the user plays the class and there reaction time and so on. Don’t blame a class if you cant play it, just practice and get better.
Yah I wont lie, I only ever die when I get caught by surprise by a zerg or a large group of people, otherwise I kill and kill and pretty much never die, though I am really good I think.
And none of them are really that fantastic, you always read up on the other classes and they have like half a page of things that got changed, then you get to thief and we have like 1 or 3 things lol. Just would be nice to get more attention, like fix the bugged traits we have and so on, and improve on our skills since half of them are useless. Just my personal opinion.
Yah, I love my 1 on 1 in wvw, sometimes 2 on 1, but I never zerg I only roam and when I get attacked by like 5 people, it hurts lol, yay for running away. Still adds to the challenge so its enjoyable, but yah getting new or fixed skills would be nice, since every other class gets them every patch.
I still love my thief, I do extremely well in wvw and pve situations, I only have one char, and thats thief, and only ever will be thief.
I’d like to see the thief get more skills related to being more agile, and nimble on there feet, maybe some more porting abilities and so on. I don’t think I need to tell any thief on here that our traps are pretty useless considering how small they are, and the fact that none of them last long or are completely cancelled out by the enemy player; whereas rangers are easily usable and helpful in live combat and can be quickly placed and activated on an enemy (and has a wide area of effect).
Other classes generally complain about stealth, but its a fact that stealth is the only thing we have that works properly, and its our only defence, without it we die fast if not built to be a tank, and even then we can only get so much defence, which is fair considering we are suppose to be able to burst.
Fixed trap skills, and more agility would be nice to have (since thats what our attributes are suppose to be being thief’s and all). Or replace the defective trap skills and useless poison skills and give us some more abilities that involve being able to port to the enemy, or away if needed. Fixing steal like soap mentioned would be nice to, I know I only ever use steal to close in on my enemy, and the steal bonus where u get some random skill, is useless half the time in real combat.
Just a few things I think would be nice to have changed I think, I’d love to use other skills then stealth sometimes, if any of them were useful in wvw or pve that is.
You do know that these are entirely different issues as far as complexity goes, right? And that the team can work on more than one thing at once? It sucks. I get it. But this fix may take time.
Yes, I also know that the dye appearance problem is not a game breaking and minor, and bugged Hidden Killer trait is a major problem that breaks the game for many thief players, and therefore I think has to be the higher priority to fix. How much time do we have to wait? A month (until the next patch)? 2 month? Half a year (there are actually bugs that have been addressed since the beta, and still have not been fixed)? A year, may be? In order to make some people take action, you have to push on them and to be more active and demanding. If you just silently wait for an action to be done, there is a good chance those people will delay it for a good amount of time. That is how most things work in the life, may be some day you will understand.
I fully agree, unless we plan to wait for ages we need to let them know how much of an issue this is, me and a few friends can almost no longer use our thiefs, especially in wvw becouse of this. It needs to get fixed fast.
No, everything about thief is still broken. I just think its unfair how every class got upgraded in their skills, and thief only got nerfed, and accidentally broken traits. That is just how I see it personally.
I don’t overly care about the WxP points, I just enjoyed playing WvW as a whole, and I loved my d/d build and thief, but it all revolves around hidden killer, the 4second debuff on stealth I can learn to play around, but the traits being broken, I can’t.
My build is still useless without hidden killer, i cant even go enjoy the new WvW updates >.<
Yah, in all honesty stealth is all a thief has, and now we have basically lost our only gain so other classes all have a HUGE adavantage on us, and for thieves who rely in stealth for builds were in serious trouble now. We could even use some buffs, like every other class seems to have gotten aside from thief who is only being nerfed. Those bugs he listed are all issues we have had before this date and now with hidden killer and such broken to some of us have nothing with which left to play, specially if thief “was” your favorite class to play.
