Seeing as the current likely wedding couple is going to be Kasmeer and Marjory…which one of them is going to wear the male outfit?
Why not both of them wear the pretty dress?
I love these outfits ANet. I rarely come to the forums to post but I am very pleased to see this direction for outfits that look appropriate for each race.
Well, except charr, female charr look a little like a housecat stuffed into froofy clothes, but I’m okay with this.
While it would be fancy, I doubt we will see a seperate personal story or even any story connection in-game. I personally await the Revenant to just be another class story-wise.
Yeah, I imagine there will be some awkward timey-wimey-ness to personal story stuff, given that I doubt they’re going to redo the whole thing even though the first revenant only existed three years after the events of Zhaitan. I could always be pleasantly surprised, though!
Frankly though, I’m less interested in what they choose to do with your leveling experience – personally, I ignore personal story anyway, since the fifteen characters I have can’t ALL be commander of the Pact and best buddies with Destiny’s Edge.
I’m more curious about what the actual lore of the class itself is. How does one become a revenant and connected into the Mists? A lot of other classes are pretty self-explanatory as to the basics of how and why they exist, but revenants are a different animal, so to speak.
Aw. Not surprised, but aw. Understand completely.
I am definitely hoping for another 75% off sale so I can pick up a key, though!
Looking eagerly toward hearing a resolution on this!
Some of that may be tied to story elements they don’t want to spoil.
Indeed! Though it certainly never hurts to ask; there might be things that could be described more generically that won’t be much of a spoiler.
I am super excited about what we read in the deep dive today mechanically, but I was a little disappointed to find there was absolutely no story or lore about the how and the why of revenants.
We know that Rytlock is the first revenant, and we know that he either discovers or develops these powers in the Mists and retains some sort of constant connection to it.
But when Rytlock returns to Tyria, is he still fully Rytlock, or has the Mists fundamentally changed who and what he is? Can he teach these skills to others, or must all aspiring revenants experience the same things Rytlock has to become one? When a revenant taps into that connection to the Mists and becomes an avatar of Mallyx, are they still in control of that mind-space, or is the influence of the demon also competing for control?
Inquiring minds want to know! Since we are starting at level 1 I am deeply curious what the backstory of our revenant characters will be.
There are laws about false advertisement it said it was 3.75 for the game not much to say past that. Read laws about it.
Nah, companies retract errors in their advertising all the time. If ANet decides to honor this price, great! I would really love it if they did. If they refund me the price, that’s okay. I’ll be mildly disappointed.
What I really want is for them to offer that $10 sale again during a time when I am actually home to purchase it instead of at PAX. Everyone would win since that is a price they actually think their game is worth!
Actually if they came back and said “We can either refund you $3.75, or we can charge you an extra $6.25 for an account key” I would be like “Thank you sir may I have another.” I may be a bit of a fangirl though, so, y’know.
^Hmm…Booster Bundle. I wonder what that is/was supposed to be.
That price certainly looked like an error, ending in 75 cents and all. I wonder if it was only NA or US. If it is honored, gratz on your special deal, everyone. If not, I am sure you all would understand why.
Good luck.
After looking at this a little more, it was probably the raw price of the Booster Multipack that goes for 300 gems. 300 gems @ $10/800 gems = $3.75
Though while we’re on the subject, why anyone would pay $3.75 for that booster pack is beyond me!
I also have an email with no serial number for my purchase.
I wanted to buy this because I missed out on getting a second account when they were $10 not long ago – the sale was short and I was still at PAX when it ended. (I was the grumpy one in the audience for the HoT reveal that ended up jumping and screaming in joy in the aisles by the end.)
I understand if they don’t want to honor the $4 codes, but I figure it was worth a shot since I missed out on the last sale. I buy gems fairly habitually on my main account so I didn’t feel too guilty about it.
I have a screenshot of what the buy site looked like at the time, promising the game came with that $3.75 price, if it helps anyone.
It’s been three days and neither my husband nor I have gotten our refunds yet. That must be quite the backlog of tickets! I hope when we finally get there, we don’t get a canned response for the wrong issue like some of the posters here have.
I’ve done some RP out in the world (not in a city zone) without too much issue so far, so I think the leveling zones will be just fine under the megaserver system. The cities, however, I’m still hearing of folks having a lot of issues with getting into the same instance as their friends and guildmates and being the victims of extremely high levels of trolling attempts.
I am really cringing at the thought of what will happen if Divinity’s Reach becomes a megaserver zone – I never RP there personally given that I like more active RP than tavern chat, but half the RP community is there on a given night. Things are going to get ridiculously troublesome whenever that particular switch gets flipped.
At the end of the day, the RP community really just wants to do the same thing that a lot of other regular players do: play and socialize with our friends and guildmates. Our socialization might look a little strange to some, but essentially it’s the same thing.
Right now, the system is not working very well for that, which is a problem. It’s now becoming more difficult to get into the same version of a map as one’s friends, servermates, and guildmates. Sometimes, that’s not an issue – most people solo at some point, some more than others, and it’s great to have people to play with. I’m not knocking the idea of a megaserver; I think it’s great for the long-term health of the game if a new player is always able to find people around him/her to play with. But it does become a serious issue for the established player, who wants to see a lot of the same folks day after day, because those are the people that they come to play with.
Breaking communities is a quick way to lose players. When folks don’t feel like they can play with their friends, they tend not to stick around. That’s really what’s being talked about here – this isn’t some RP-specific problem, it’s a problem for any established community in the game.
I don’t personally have any interest in quitting the game, though I might be pushed that way over time if it remains difficult to play and roleplay with friends. I love the game for the game but the socialization aspect is still really important to me and others. I hope that ANet will listen to some of the frustrations that are being expressed.
I really like the idea of megaservers on maps; having activity out there is great! However, not being able to select between megaservers is tiresome; it’s made playing with one’s friends a chore of grouping and ferrying – when it works. This system would work much better with a selectable district system such as from GW1 so we can all tell each other “Go to Metrica Province 3” and we all just select the third district of Metrica and voila! All together, no muss no fuss.
Selectable districts would also solve a lot of the issues that are being had with subgroups, such as communities that speak languages other than English and roleplayers, if they just knew amongst themselves to aim for a specific district so as to find people who are playing the game in the same manner of socialization as they are.
Right now I’m not seeing a whole lot of “prioritizing” happening with the algorithm that’s being used to do the megaservers. I’m seeing mostly people who aren’t from my server and I haven’t seen a guildmate on the same megaserver map yet. Friends are reporting difficulties joining each other’s megaserver version of a map.
What we really need is some way to select the megaserver district that we’re in, a la Guild Wars 1. That would fix a lot of the problem.
How does one obtain the transmutation charges that are supposed to be granted with one’s rank in sPvP? I still only have the 5 charges that I received for free from the BLTC, but do not have any additional charges from being rank 20.
Has anyone had any luck in getting their transmutation charges from sPvP rank? It looks like my PvP wardrobe ported over just fine, but I never got the 20 charges that I should have for being at Dolyak rank.
I am in a state of acceptance now that, no matter how many posts are made, the decision is final – however, I do not feel like those of us that are unhappy are being treated very fairly, and certainly not like valued customers. The message here is patronizing, like one would do for a child: “Trust us – we took away the toys you paid for, but you’ll thank us later when you see what other newer, better toys we offer to sell you someday.” And while I can understand the want to be patronizing towards some in this thread given the less-than-mature outbursts of a few posters, I think the rest of us deserve better than that.
Perhaps the outfits going forward will indeed be better. Perhaps Colin is right and we will like them, and that looking back we will also conclude and agree that the new approach is better than the last. But that doesn’t change that, right now, they have done everyone who has purchased town clothes a disservice, and that they have done so with little warning, bumbled the explanation and apology, and have still not offered a promise of making it up to the players that they have wronged financially.
It is this part that makes me feel uneasy about making any further purchases in the gem store. If we cannot feel certain that ANet will make every effort to apologize and make things right when their development plans leave their players with gemstore items that are nothing like what they paid for, then why should I purchase anything there again? Why should anyone purchase anything there again, when tomorrow we could be told “too bad, you wasted your money” with zero confidence that we will be compensated?
And I speak as a person that buys her gemstore items with cash, because I believe that given the volume of time I spend on the game, it is only right to show my appreciation for that. If this game had a subscription option, I would be on it. I have been a fan of this franchise and the company for a long time. While I know that having spent hundreds of dollars over the past few years doesn’t mean that I deserve anything in particular in return, seeing now the way I am treated as a customer leaves me with a bitter taste. I will likely not forget it.
Even if the new costume system will be better, I don’t see myself purchasing them, even if I might want to. I don’t have any confidence that, if I did, I wouldn’t be right back here in another six months when the best-laid development plans fall short and everything changes, leaving more customers holding the bag full of things that they paid for, but can no longer use the way it was promised.
I will still play the game, though; this is no “goodbye cruel world” post where I make some silly and reckless claim that this change is enough to drive me out for good. I still love this game and I love the time that I spend in it with my friends and guildmates. I still like most of the changes that are made, and I think the developers do have a vision of good things to come for GW2. I just don’t know how much I’ll bother spending on items in the gem store ever again if the players that did purchase these items are not issued a real apology and are not compensated accordingly.
The floor is yours.
Some promotional town clothing, such as the Dragon Emblem T-shirt and retired town clothes such as the hoodies, will become endless tonics which allow you to continue to wear the clothing in non-combat situations.
Why?! “You can still mix and match single items except for the ones you may actually want to show off”
Yeah, it’s almost like being punished for having been an early adopter/supporter of the game, haha. All of the promotional items and things that were retired from the gem store – you know, the things that only folks who have been been around for a while would have – are the same ones that are getting the lousy tonic treatment. It’s… definitely not how I would choose to honor a loyal customer and fan of my business, that’s for sure.
I know it’s not personal and it probably wasn’t thought of, how that message might end up coming across, but it feels harsh, and that’s probably why so many of the responses have been tinged with anger. No one wants to feel slapped in the face, but that’s the message that’s been sent here toward early adopters, unintentionally.
some town clothes do not “fit” the style of classes. Plus there are some who play large norn and enjoy the cooking outfit and would lose out on it because the town clothes became light armors.
The converted skins would undoubtedly need to be available to all armor classes. As for ruining the look of classes, it can’t possibly ruin them any more than the absurdity of a bunch of folks fighting in Mad King’s armor, which is about to be a reality. You can’t tell a light-fighter in Mad King’s from a heavy-fighter, after all. I think the “sanctity of armor class appearance” ship has already sailed where PvE/WvW is concerned.
I seriously hope that FAQ was released when they released the blog post. If they released that FAQ just an hour or two ago, then it shows they are ignoring us completely and are going ahead with their plans without giving us any thought.
The FAQ is from yesterday. Don’t despair!
Oh my, you are really good with finding typos. If you are this good, you should probably read it to understand that forcing Anet into refunds isn’t a legal option.
Otherwise, if you really think games should not eveolve because some want those old features, then you have to try checking Wiki too, you will find some informative pages about MMOs.
Please stop with this. It’s not helping the topic at all, and ANet, while not being required to provide a refund for the virtual items, appears willing to offer one anyway for the town clothes items that are becoming awful tonics, so the whole argument is without a real point.
Though I personally would much rather have a functional item instead of a refund, I am grateful that they appear to be willing to do that for their customers who purchased the now-useless items at least.
Yes, thank you. Please keep it civil to not only our staff, but to each other, while you are giving us your feedback. We are compiling it all together and we should have more answers on a variety of topics regarding Wardrobe when we do.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Thank you, Danicia. I think many in this thread will feel at least a little better knowing that our concerns are being heard.
I’ve actually been surprised by how many folks have come here to support this issue from even outside of the RP community. Town clothes were more beloved than I think any of us really knew.
I still have faith that ANet will see how important this issue is to so many and reconsider the choice to turn them into tonics. With the patch only a few weeks away, it’s understandable that these things might take time and we might not receive a fix to make the town clothes usable in a more normal way for a while, but it would be worth a wait to get them.
Please reconsider the way town clothes are being retired, ANet. This is both a personal enjoyment and an economic issue for many of us, since the items in question were in the gem store. I for one will be receiving a lot of refunded gems if this change goes forward, but what will I spend them on? Most of the money I have spent in the store over the past year and a half has been on cosmetic customization, but now I feel that I can no longer trust that anything I purchase from there will retain its functionality.
Except they actually are changing individual pieces of town clothing into armor skins >.>
“Some promotional town clothing, such as the Dragon Emblem T-shirt and retired town clothes such as the hoodies, will become endless tonics which allow you to continue to wear the clothing in non-combat situations. "
A lot of the town clothing that wasn’t headgear actually falls into this category, not the armor skin category, unfortunately.
That does confirm that the hoodies and whatnot are going to be tonic’d and are therefore pointless. Guess I’ll wait to file for my refund on the 15th.
On the bright side, I’ll have several thousand gems to spend on… I don’t know. Not costumes, that’s for sure.
(edited by Liraz.8062)
Other seasonal outfits, such as the Fancy Winter Outfit, were actually part of a set, and are likely to receive the costume treatment instead of being turned into a tonic. It will not be possible to use the individual coat/pants/etc in a mix-and-match situation anymore.
There’s still the Mad King event sets, the Mad King, Witch and many other stuff also sold in separate.
Yes, in previous sales, these outfits came as a set of several separate items, one for each slot (head/coat/pants/etc). I have no idea how they intend to handle those. Will the separate items become tonics and only new Mad King outfits be full, inseparable costumes? Will everyone who has ever bought that item be issued a new Mad King outfit and the pieces of the old ones disappear? Who knows!
This is one of those things we really need a developer to answer, as it’s impossible to speculate.
Right, they are talking about the items on the town clothes list that were removed on December 17th. This includes:
Casual Hoodie
Cherry Blossom Shirt
Country Lace Gathered Shirt
Designer Hoodie
Dragon Emblem Shirt
Fitted Casual Shirt
Layered Vest
Leather Hoodie
Ornate Ruched Shirt
Silk Brocade Vest with Shirt
Striped Silk Vest with Shirt
Khaki Cargo Shorts
Riding Pants
Riding Boots
Riding GlovesThe last three items still exist as part of a costume set, but their individually sold versions were removed from the gem store.
I totally missed this, wasn’t playing actively at the time. I wanted to buy some of those :O
Why were they removed?
At the time, no reason was given, and there was never any announcement made. I guess we know now why it was done – it’s very likely that they knew three months ago that these feature patch changes were coming, and they wanted to limit the number of people who would be negatively impacted.
It would have been far better if they had stated that this was about to happen. I know several individuals, including myself, that purchased some of those items just as they were about to disappear, thinking they were just clearing the gem store out for new items.
Does this “all or nothing” also count for gem store armors? (like magitech)
Would be disastrous if I can’t combine magitech with other pieces anymore.
Gem store armors are not not costumes, they are skins, and are not affected in the same way. This thread is discussing the changes to costumes and town clothes only.
You do not understand, over the course of the year I used real money to buy in total 500g+ worth of Flame and Frost dyes, Abyss and Celestial for multiple characters.
We’re talking between about 50$ for what is now NOTHING.
Sure it’s great for people who never bought gems or new players. But for those of us with less time for farming and that used money we are getting ripped off.
I’m sure that is very frustrating; however, I support ANet making that change (despite having duplicates of things myself) because it was widely requested by the playerbase. You were able to enjoy the dyes you bought on your character, and you will still be able to do so afterward, even if it is frustrating to know that you spent more than was needed to.
The difference is that with the change to town clothes, we will not be able to enjoy our town clothes the same way that we did before the change. The usability of town clothes and costumes while in combat was also widely requested, but the way it has been implemented it is a change that directly impacts anyone who has purchased one of these items. The outright removal and depreciation of town clothes into tonic form was not requested by anyone and is inferior than the products that were paid for.
There’s not really a lot of confusion there. They’re talking about clothes that were on the market place that are currently expired. IE, Winter clothes, riding shorts, etc.
The bigger point of contention is the all or nothing suits. DO NOT WANT. At all.
Right, they are talking about the items on the town clothes list that were removed on December 17th. This includes:

Cherry Blossom Shirt
Country Lace Gathered Shirt

I think most players with these items would be much happier if they were added to the wardrobe instead of turned into tonics, even if this meant that they would not be immediately available when the feature patch goes live. A tonic is not very useful or functional when compared to what was originally paid for and I keep hearing over and over again in this thread that most would prefer to keep what they have rather than receive a refund.
I am more than willing to wait a month or two for them to be added to the wardrobe as I am sure that changing things will take time, and we are not very far away from the patch. I imagine most others are willing to be patient for ANet to get this right as well, and are just looking for a sign that ANet is listening to this feedback and is willing to consider changing their approach to the retirement of town clothes.
What is this talk about tonics? Can someone explain?
In the wardrobe post today, they mentioned that town clothes are going away as they know them. Full sets of outfits will be used as costumes and have their own slot, and be wearable in combat.
Pieces of clothes that were sold individually but are no longer available in the gem store – such as the Khaki Shorts, or the Cherry Blossom Shirt – instead will be turned into endless tonics. Activating one of these tonics will give you the item of clothing you bought, but will give you a generic outfit appearance for the rest of your outfit. For example, if you activate the Cherry Blossom Shirt tonic, you will get generic pants/boots/whatever. If you activate the Shorts tonic, you will get a generic shirt. The purpose of this is to prevent you from looking naked.
The problem is that you can only activate one tonic at a time, so if you were wearing multiple pieces of town clothes, the look you achieved is no longer possible. Also, mix and matching from parts of the other sets, such as the cook or pirate set, with other pieces of town clothing, is also not possible anymore.
Those of us that purchased these items are frustrated given that they were not cheap and the alternative tonics they have offered us in light of these wardrobe changes are not very useful compared to their previous forms.
(edited by Liraz.8062)
I’m confused. I currently have the kahki shorts on my Norn, when this change is made is it going to be replaced by a tonic? Will that Tonic just replace the pants on my character with the shorts or will or will it now change all my clothes with something they think goes with the shorts?
If I understand correctly, it will change your clothes to something that they think goes with the shorts. I base this understanding on the following dev quote:
The endless tonic will grant the appearance of the clothing it replaced. (along with some appropriate complimentary pieces so you’re not naked). They are new tonics, not existing ones.
CAN I WEAR A SANTA HAT WITH MY ARMOR IN COMBAT LIKE GW1?
The answer appears to be yes. Headgear appears to be exempted from the tonic treatment, and is being treated as a potential skin for all armor classes.
- Make every piece of town clothes usable as a skin for every type of armor piece, like how it seems to be working with head gear. This has one mayor problem, and is that it will probably cost Transmutation Charges with the current system. Anet should impement a system to make sure this pieces are free to apply.
I would be okay with the transmutation charge system for these items as well , given that they would be getting “upgraded” to be usable in combat.
I need to walk away from these forums, as my anger is surging just thinking about the loss of an important aspect to how I played my characters that did involve real world money and time. Hopefully the devs will realize the error they’re making on town clothes and come up with a different solution that doesn’t alienate a part of their player-base: Namely the role-players, which they have been so good at doing since release. I know it will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for many of us.
I don’t think you need to be hyperbolic about this and speak for the entire roleplay community. Many of us are quite happy with the vast majority of the changes upcoming and are excited about them! I do not feel alienated as a roleplayer, though I am fully aware that few design decisions are made at ANet with our community in mind.
The design decisions regarding town clothes is a downer, though, no doubt, and it will negatively affect roleplayers more than the playerbase at large, given that we are more likely overall to have purchased and used town clothes given our style of play. I hope ANet will clarify and/or reconsider.
We’re going to be needing some specifics regarding what skins are tonics and what sets count as “costumes.” I bought the Braham set specifically for the female top and boots. Don’t you dare tell me I can’t have my maid outfit anymore!
The Braham set is an armor skin, and not a set of town clothes. They will not be affected by the conversation you see here about town clothes and tonics, though I agree with you that further clarification about all of this is sorely needed.
I would definitely appreciate an answer as to how we can go about obtaining a refund. If we need to do it before the patch goes live so that we do not end up with skins on our account that we can no longer use the way we’d intended, that information would be very useful and timely.
New Heavy Armor for my guard.
Nope, you can’t do that. Both the shirt and the shorts are retired pieces that are going to be replaced by tonics, and only one tonic can be active at a time.
This post pretty accurately summarizes my concerns:
Here are the people who are kittened off by the change so far:
-people who like to mix-match town clothes
As someone that has purchased a lot from the gem store in the way of town clothes, I am concerned about what will happen with my purchased items going forward. Given the nature of these items, I think ANet should have considered their effect a little more carefully.
That said, I am 90% thrilled with everything else in the update, and believe it is overall a great change for the game.
To clarify, I love the rest of what they’re doing with wardrobes, it’s just this confusing piece about how the town clothes that is kind of unfortunate and disappointing, especially the town clothes that people have bought prior to the update are going to work.
I understand that if you buy a set of town clothes after the update, they become a costume that you wear fully. Got it, that makes sense. I’m not wild about it because I rarely think all parts of a costume look good but that’s fine, I’m sure others will disagree and still love it. No problem there.
What I don’t quite grasp is what happens to us with Cherry Blossom shirts and Cargo Shorts and all of that. We can’t use those items anymore, and they’re going to become tonics? We can’t dye them, we can’t wear them with other originally town clothes items? All of that seems really ill-thought out and disappointing. I don’t understand why they don’t just convert them to unlockable skins as well, but if there’s a technical limitation, again, I can deal with that, so long as everyone who bought them is issued a refund without question.
What gets really confusing is for people who have bought full outfits like the Pirate’s set previously and already have their set in pieces. What are they going to do? Are they getting a set of tonics, one for each piece? Or is the programming logic smart enough to pull all of the pieces from one’s bank/inventory/equipped and give them a brand new outfit? Or are they going to have to file a ticket to get it replaced?
These things all really need some clarification and answers.
I’m guessing that each piece of town clothing will remain single items, but the toys will become the new endless tonics that will give the costume brawl skill. (I’m not sure what the dev means by all or nothing, seems very strange since many of the town clothing pieces were mix and match by themselves.)
Indeed – if I recall correctly, they sold a combo pack for a while that had multiple pieces of individual town clothes together, head + shirt + breeches + shoes, and toted that as some sort of outfit that they sold at a discount.
Today, we find that we can’t wear but one piece at a time, as they’ll be converted to tonics. That’s… well, pretty terrible, considering what they themselves were advertising.
Will we be able to receive refunds for our town clothes? Those of us that have bought many individual pieces to wear, mix-and-match style, are definitely going to be harmed by this new system.
I have another possible theory.. Scarlet kept on claiming again and again how she had some ulterior motive, and we never got her villainous rant.
My bet is that Mordremoth has been lying gathering strength, drawing on those leylines. The villainous rant may well have been that by disrupting them, she did, yes, force our hands by waking another ED. but has woken him prematurely this way, less powerful than he otherwise would have been.
I’d buy this theory, if it were not for her gleeful – even on death’s door, gleeful! – gloating that Tyria will be serving a new master. She appeared corrupted thoroughly by the dragon, though how and why remain a mystery. If she thought she was doing Tyria a favor by waking him early, why would she gloat? It makes no sense.
If only the NPCs hadn’t been so utterly disinterested in her big villain explanation that they didn’t let her give, we’d have some answers to go off of, but alas. We don’t.
Scarlet found the magical cluster of leylines under LA, she drilled through them and “activated” them. The magic spread around the globe, one of the lines awakened the dragon.
You are missing an “s” at the end of that last sentence.
Why? There’s no evidence that she woke up more than one dragon. Only one dragon is depicted awakening, and moreover, it’s been clear that there are six elder dragons for quite some time now – look at the Crucible’s setup, or the Arah path with the star observatory. The other five elder dragons were awakened previously to this living story patch.
My question here is: is there any LA left after that explosion? It certainly doesn’t look like there should be, but it was out in the middle of the water, and maybe it was just a lightsplosion. I don’t know.
The thing that I didn’t like about this ending was that there was no real explanation. A lot of folks guessed she was after Mordremoth, but we still don’t know why she went to such extremes to wake him up, and how he got into her head in the first place, and what that could mean for the sylvari.
The NPCs say they’re not interested in the explanation, but that’s the exact opposite of what my character would have done in that situation. She would have let her talk, and then killed her. Every piece of information is crucial. Why put all those pieces together in the bar and then not get the answer from the sylvari’s own mouth!?
Otherwise, I’m happy to see a return to dragons, but without an explanation, a cool cinematic is just a cinematic.
FIC is a great guild of folks, and we’re always looking for more great folks to join us. Think you might be up for FIC? Here’s a checklist of four “must-haves” for any potential applicant to our guild:
Activity and Representation. We’re an active guild and we have dedicated players that play together every night. We’re looking for folks who are willing to be dedicated and invested in what’s going on in our guild. For this reason, we require eight hours of playtime while representing FIC during the evening hours per week.
Activity Times. Almost all of our scheduled events, both the RP and OOC ones, have a starting time around 9pm Eastern on various days throughout the week. We want potential members that will be able to play around that time of day so they might participate and enjoy activities with us. See our calendar for examples of our typical schedule.
Lore-appropriate Characters. We do take the lore seriously and feel it’s important for the characters in FIC to be representative of the game’s lore. Character names and backgrounds should be representative of their race and make sense within the world of Tyria without departing too far from established lore as seen in-game.
Long-term Interest in the Game. While we are roleplayers, we are also gamers that enjoy the game thoroughly on an OOC level. We dive into dungeons, work towards legendaries and titles, assault camps and towers in WvW, do our dailies, and simply play all aspects of GW2 in accordance with our interest. We believe that both RP and gameplay are important pillars of our guild experience and we want members that feel the same.
If we’ve just described you and you meet our qualifications, click here to visit our forums, register, and fill out an application.
Thanks for your interest in the Firstwatch!
Recently, we had a question from one of our recruits: why are we the “Firstwatch Irregular Company”, and does it have any significance?
Well, there’s actually a lot of significance to it in an OOC manner – probably more than we probably realized at the time we made it almost three years ago.
Firstwatch: We came up with this part of the name because we were basing the guild in Lion’s Arch, so we originally wanted a little bit of a “throwback” to GW1’s Lionguard. The “Firstwatch” part specifically comes from Firstwatch Sergio, the leader of the Lionguard in GW1. This was kind of our quiet signal flare to longtime fans of the GW franchise, though I think it flies under the radar more often than not.
Irregular: That one’s kind of a double meaning. Originally we were a lot more “military-esque” than “adventurer/mercenary” like we are now, so we wanted something that communicated that – “irregular” can mean “a member of an irregular military force” so we figured that was a good description of what we were at the time. These days, we like the term “irregulars” because of its other meaning: we are all pretty odd, and so are some of our characters.
Company: Again, multiple meanings. “Company” can be a military unit, which was the original idea, but now it’s probably more “company” as in mercantile activities, because they are a private, for-profit force. In a more OOC sense, it’s also “company” because it’s a good allegory for what a guild really is (and apparently was an alternate name for a guild at some point in history). Finally, “company” because of its definition for companionship and fellowship, which is something we value a lot in the guild.
So all the meaning in layered in there somewhere in an OOC manner! Though, in our guild lore, this is the name because that’s what the company’s original owner wanted it to be. They didn’t pick it, and when the company’s ownership changed hands ICly, the new owner declined to change it, because that would have meant paying for new stationary.
