An IC preview of the guild:

“Who are the Firstwatch? Well, I suppose that depends on who you ask.” Adirah chuckled at her own statement, then cast a glance down at the brandy she was gently and idly swirling in her glass as she thought how best to answer the broad, vague inquiry.

After a moment, she looked up again and settled her golden brown eyes on the questioner. “If you’re asking me what I think of us, I think we are an adventurer’s guild that, with the help of a wealthy enough benefactor, has the luxury of being choosy with our work. And that allows us to be a bit more morally upright than most, of course – when you don’t have to worry if there will be bread on everyone’s table tonight, you don’t have to take on work that skirts the law or keeps you up at night wondering if you’ve done the wrong thing.

“And so because of that, the Firstwatch has a reputation for benevolence, I suppose, to some. We take on charity cases now and then – the farmers and merchants that operate nearby to Lion’s Arch know us for that, and they probably do think we are a charity for how little we charge to run off pirates, bandits, and centaurs.” Adirah leaned in and dropped her voice slightly. “Truth be told, though, we don’t do those things for the charity of it. We do it because we live here as well. It’s simply good business. Who will hire adventurers who can’t keep their own turf safe?” She pulled back then and took a sip of her brandy, then, smiling, looked at the questioner again. “Besides… I enjoy the publicity of charity work, personally.

“But not everyone likes us. We sometimes run afoul of money and power here in town; the Captain’s Council certainly doesn’t like that we keep an airship so close nearby, for example, though at least now they have their own, and Kiel’s own goody-two-shoes nature tends to keep us in their better graces. The Lionguard has a love-hate relationship with us, of course – they love when we’re working to help them, and hate when our work is causing them to have to work harder. There’s no shortage of criminals around in a city like this, either, and every now and again we’ll anger a cartel enough that they’ll target us directly. Oh, and the Inquest particularly dislikes us, but who don’t they dislike?” Adirah laughed at that.

“I suppose at the end of the day, we think of ourselves as the ‘good guys’. That’s important to me, to be the ones that are trying to make the world better. Certainly we’re no Pact, or any peacekeeping force, or anything like that. We haven’t the discipline or the numbers for that kind of vast impact, and frankly? That’s fine with us. We operate best when we’re a small company like this. A family, of a sort, where you have grumpy charr and eccentric asura for cousins.” Adirah shrugged at her own depiction, a bit of a sheepish expression playing over her Elonian features. “Every member counts, and we make our mark on Tyria in small ways instead of big ones. We help when we can and we’ll go anywhere we’re needed to do it, and the rest of the time? I suppose we just make our mark on each other instead, as families tend to do.

“So that’s the Firstwatch, as best as I might explain it. If that doesn’t satisfy you, go badger Kraddock on the topic instead and leave me to my brandy in peace.” A moment later, she added with a slightly devilish grin, “Though he does have claws, so I don’t recommend it.”

We are…

In-Character. The Firstwatch is a story of do-gooders and would-be-heroes, adventurers that came by their trade in odd ways and, at times, make for an strange and motley crew. Some are ex-soldiers, some were merchants, some were nobles or scientists or former criminals looking to make good. Together, though, they’ve become a powerful guild family that is as unlikely and multicultural as one would ever expect of a group born from Lion’s Arch.

Out-of-Character. FIC is an RP-PvX guild dedicated to two things: 1) high-quality roleplay, and 2) a strong, tight-knit membership that loves to play together. We keep our membership small so that no one is ever an unknown name in our guild chat – we strive to be not just a guild you’re in, but a community that you want to log in for.

Dedicated. We’re not the kind of guild that’s just going to dry up and blow away in the wind. The guild’s core has been together for over four years and our GW2 incarnation has been creating roleplay for the GW2 universe since May of 2011 – we’ve been at this a while! You might have known us in other games as well: La Compagnie des Iles Occidentales in PotBS, Legio XIX in Aion, or Sierra 3 in STO, to name a few.

Active. There’s always something to do with the Firstwatch. There’s RP scheduled weekly with a distinct, long-running plot to follow, along with opportunities for spontaneous RP throughout the week. We also believe heavily in playing the game itself – we run dungeons, set off guild missions, and do romps through WvW and Orr. We believe in providing a reason for our members to log in and play together.

Lore-abiding. While we don’t know everything about the GW2 universe, we believe in staying true to the source. Sometimes we use our imaginations to fill in the gaps, but we always correct and/or retcon if we discover that it’s not accurate to the lore. To us, the game is our framework, not just our inspiration, and we don’t allow things and characters in our guild lore that isn’t in sync with everyone else in the community.

Adults. We have a strict 18+ policy, and everyone flying the FIC flag has both the freedom and the responsibility to behave, think, and talk like an adult. We have jobs, families, and real lives outside of the game, and this is where we come to let loose. We don’t take our characters personally and we don’t get the IC-OOC lines crossed – we roleplay for fun, and we don’t let real-life bad days or in-character drama get in the way of that.

If that sounds fabulous to you, great! Come by our site, check out our Guild Membership Requirements, or submit an application today!

FIC is a great guild of folks, and we’re always looking for more great folks to join us. Think you might be up for FIC? Here’s a checklist of four “must-haves” for any potential applicant to our guild:

Activity and Representation. We’re an active guild and we have dedicated players that play together every night. We’re looking for folks who are willing to be dedicated and invested in what’s going on in our guild. For this reason, we require eight hours of playtime while representing FIC during the evening hours per week.

Activity Times. Almost all of our scheduled events, both the RP and OOC ones, have a starting time around 9pm Eastern on various days throughout the week. We want potential members that will be able to play around that time of day so they might participate and enjoy activities with us. See our calendar for examples of our typical schedule.

Lore-appropriate Characters. We do take the lore seriously and feel it’s important for the characters in FIC to be representative of the game’s lore. Character names and backgrounds should be representative of their race and make sense within the world of Tyria without departing too far from established lore as seen in-game.

Long-term Interest in the Game. While we are roleplayers, we are also gamers that enjoy the game thoroughly on an OOC level. We dive into dungeons, work towards legendaries and titles, assault camps and towers in WvW, do our dailies, and simply play all aspects of GW2 in accordance with our interest. We believe that both RP and gameplay are important pillars of our guild experience and we want members that feel the same.

It doesn’t matter which fractal was chosen she would’ve shown up regardless.

You’re right, it’s better that they ruin this little part of the lore than to go back in time and mess with the canon from GW1, too.

Problem. One of the head writer for the Living Story, Angel McCoy, is basically doing that as well and making GW1’s lore more worthless.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lore/Angel-McCoy-Interview/

So yeah, the person that created Scarlet is basically rewriting GW 1 lore.

Say half a year ago, when we knew nothing about Scarlet, they announced an expansion.

One evil genius is forming alliances with EVERYONE evil and assaulting everything! And you will discover that she is the reason for all evil in the world (forget the dragons, that was a joke.) But don’t worry, no new classes, one new skill, no new areas, and three new instances.

Who would have bought it?

If it isn’t good enough for an expansion, why is it good enough for Living World? Because Living World is free?

Well said, sir.

ANet, I have been a fan for a very long time. I’m a friend, so trust me when I say that you need to sit down the writing staff for an intervention. You guys are such great worldbuilders but your storytelling is just plain awful. This Scarlet thing has been going on for months with no resolution and the character is everywhere and seemingly coated in teflon so no one’s attacks can stick to her. That’s not how good villains are supposed to work. This is embarrassing writing and it’s below what I know this studio is capable of. It’s time to put down the Scarlet cold turkey and walk away.

How to fix Meteorlogicus for Everyone

in Suggestions

Posted by: Liraz.8062

Liraz.8062

I really like the new Meteorlogicus, and the updates they made are what convinced me to make it instead of a different legendary. I just finished mine last night. My thoughts:

1) I like the electrical storm footfalls, but the clouds themselves are not very visible against a lot of ground textures. I suppose they don’t really need to be given the lightning effect but I wish the clouds were just a little lighter grey so as to stand out better.

2) The lack of glow when sheathed during the daytime is a bummer. It stands out so well at night when it glows that I do miss it in daytime.

3) I am one of the people that love the nighttime purple glow color. It’s fantastic! I feel bad for the folks that made it pre-patch and don’t like it, but I’d be terribly sad if ANet removed it now. The daytime-nighttime change is one of the coolest parts of the weapon.

4) Since I didn’t own this weapon pre-patch, I don’t really have any strong feelings about the trail either way. I feel like it could be showy enough with a daytime sheathed glow, given that the footfalls are already very showy! But I wouldn’t be upset if it had one either.

5) I wish that Meteorlogicus had a special attacking effect like many of the other weapons, like the Bifrost with its new rainbow bolt, or the special effects that Incinerator has with some skills. This would be my only real “complaint” about the weapon.

Improving the guild system (Long + detailed)

in Suggestions

Posted by: Liraz.8062

Liraz.8062

Inactivity detection and some in-game organizational tools, such as a calendar, are sorely needed to support guilds in this game. I realize improvements like these aren’t the kind of feature that sell more copies of the game, but they are a quality of life issue and I don’t understand why they’ve been ignored while things like AoE looting were fast-tracked. Guild management tools are a must in a modern MMO and the lack of them in this game contributes heavily to the weak state of guilds in GW2. I agree with the OP and implore ANet to reconsider allocating some resources to improving this area of the game.

I am still in possession of two tonics – an Endless Halloween Tonic, and an exotic Charged Potion – that are not sellable on the Trading Post.

I and others have been exceedingly patient in waiting for a response and it would be appreciated if you could at least let us know whether this bug is still receiving any attention at all, and how we as players can get some sort of resolution through a replacement item.

Thanks.

While I sympathize with the inconvenience to a small section of people, it’s not as if anyone was unaware that this was an area that was intended to be walled off. Being able to access it at all outside of an instance is, essentially, a bug, and ArenaNet has every right to fix bugs in their game, whether they were bugs that hurt anything or not. Just because a bug is enjoyable to a few does not mean it should not be corrected.

I mean, everyone loved sit-jumping, too. It didn’t hurt anything, and it was really funny to watch. We all missed it when it disappeared, but it was a bug, and ANet fixed it. This is no different.

Hello again ANet, I’m here for my monthly request for an update about this bug. There was no response about the potential for getting replacement tonics by contacting support from 20 days ago, so I’d like to reiterate that here:

Alternatively, would it be acceptable for us to contact support and have them provide us with a version of the item(s) that is indeed sellable, as intended? At this point, we have been waiting for months, and while I realize and appreciate that you all are working to resolve it, the wait has become a bit unrealistic. Many of us have lost opportunities to capitalize on these items on the Trading Post in the meantime.

I hope that you can understand the high levels of frustration that those of us plagued with these bugged items feel, given the extremely long “fix” time. I am of the impression that this bug is not a very high priority, which is understandable due to how few of us there probably are out there. However, not providing those of us afflicted by the bug with a workaround is not very understandable at all given the sheer volume of time that has passed.

I would very much appreciate a response or update beyond “we’re working on it”; I think those of us in this thread have been more than patient and polite, and are owed a little better customer service here.

Thanks!

Guild Missions [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Liraz.8062

Liraz.8062

I am extremely afraid for the roleplay community in specific. Let me explain why.

While there are some large guilds in the RP community, the vast majority are small, and/or have only small percentages of representation. The reason is because some roleplayers tend to join guilds partially based on the RP theme of the guild and whether their character concepts will fit, and therefore, many roleplayers are members of multiple small, niche guilds.

Up until now, this has been a benefit of GW2 for many – the supported ability to make new guilds easily and switch between them at will. It has allowed for niche RP ideas to flourish where in other games, the lack of dedicated players to support it might make the guild untenable. However, this freedom also means that many of these small guilds do not have a vast influence infrastructure.

Due to the high influence costs and mission design requiring high guild participation numbers, I do not think very many of us will be able to run any of this new content with our RP guilds. Suddenly, now, our many small guild associations have become a hindrance to our accessing content and rewards.

The alternative, of course, is to join a large guild – but for our community, that may be an extra element for us of being asked to play the game in a way that is not congruent with our interests or wishes. In my experience, RP megaguilds are anything but functional most of the time, and non-RP megaguilds are – well, not roleplayers, and generally contain some hostile elements towards roleplaying within them.

My own RP guild is somewhat against the usual RP guild trend – while we are small (5-8 members online per night out of 12 total), we contain very dedicated players that have been together for years. We will be able to unlock things with a little patience and bribe friends outside the guild to help us squeak by with the most basic bounty mission, but I think we may be an exception rather than the rule, and even we will struggle to succeed. Most small RP guilds do not have such longevity or single-guild dedication like we do and I cannot imagine how they will manage.

Many of us choose small guilds deliberately because it is the best way for us to experience the game in the way that makes us happiest. Now, I wonder if we will be viable anymore. We are active Fractal-runners and daily-completers on top of being roleplayers in a small guild, and until now, we have never felt like we had to choose between gameplay rewards and playstyle happiness. Now, we do.

For the time being, I can only hope that ANet sees the reason of the posts in this thread and amends their design choices to be more accommodating towards small guilds. I have been very defensive of ANet’s design choices over the years in both GW1 and 2, and often see the forest they were aiming for instead of the trees that are the mistakes and difficulties, but this time I feel they really and truly need to re-examine their process. I hope they do, because it will hurt us and eventually drive our niche of the community away.

I hope that “Guild missions will be taking place in Southsun Cove” doesn’t mean ONLY in Southsun Cove.

The way they worded it in MMORPG.com’s interview was far different: “Effectively, this system allows guilds to literally create content across the world for everyone to experience. When one of these missions is created, often times you’ll see a banner with the guilds name and emblem that created the content.”

I don’t think restricting missions to Southsun Cove is going to be a particularly engaging or useful as recruiting tool for everyone, given that SSC is a level 80 zone that is fairly impossible to just “happen upon”.

Hope that’s not really an accurate interpretation of what was said – otherwise, that’s highly disappointing.

The patch notes say “Fixed a bug that prevented Endless Halloween Tonics from being listed on the Trading Post.” but the Endless Halloween Tonic I have is still not list-able. There are still only two options for it: “Use” or “Destroy”.

January WvW culling & loading changes

1. The first of our engine changes will be coming on line to help improve character load times by using fallback models.
2. We’ll be switching over to the culling methodology that we trialed in December.

This is great news! Is there any chance this new culling improvements will be making their way to the rest of the game, outside of WvW? If no, why not?

Guesting is Coming

I’m just disappointed I’m not going to be able to get on Tarnished Coast before the transfer restrictions kick in. I really want to get involved in the RP community. I’m going to have to figure out an alternative to TC quickly.

My suggestion would be that, if you’re getting up against the deadline, you could transfer to a different NA server that is not full so often like TC is, and guest over for your RP needs.

Either way, 12 days is ample time to prepare as a community with our friends. It is not like the patch comes out tonight and we are all out of luck.

Unfortunately, I am not talking about a couple of dozen people that I would need to try to round up and get moved to one dataserver or the other. I am talking about thousands of people.

The GW2 Roleplay community is quite large and both sides are well-ingrained on their existing servers. Contacting, much less moving, everyone is a logistical impossibility at this stage, and it’s not likely that either server would have enough room to house everyone who’d try to transfer if we attempted it.

EU and NA worlds are on totally different data centers. There simply isn’t the tech to guest cross-data center, and, honestly, I’m not sure why you would anticipate that there would be.

Well, I think most of us were anticipating it because ArenaNet implied it.

Such as in this blog post from April 24, 2012 – “your characters can play on any world where you have friends”. (http://www.arena.net/blog/choosing-and-transferring-worlds-in-guild-wars-2)

The next line says that there are certain restrictions, such as not being able to participate in WvW. Cross-region restrictions were never listed, which one would expect it to be if it were restricted.

That would have been a prime, responsible time for them to disclose that information, so that cross-region guilds and communities could plan accordingly. I am disappointed that they chose to obscure this information instead.

I am really stunned by this announcement. ArenaNet was always so supportive of international communities and guilds before in their previous game. There were so many people waiting on guesting to be able to reunite their cross-ocean groups.

And I’ll echo TottWriter from above – the roleplay community was also hanging on for guesting on the promise that our two servers – one NA, one EU – would finally be able to operate a single community again with guesting back and forth. I can’t tell you how sad you’ve made that group, though you can get a glimpse of it here if you like.

I hope that this is just a temporary technical restriction that you all are committed to overcoming in time.

Cursed Shore latency delays and disconnects. Both computers on our network. This is the only zone I notice any issues with.

Server: Tarnished Coast

I’m in the exact same boat as you, Especially when I do the Pen/Shelt events.

This is the exact same issue that my husband and I and another guildie are seeing. Cursed Shore, Tarnished Coast, Pen/Shelt area.

Oddly, two other guildies, who have been in the area for some time before our arrival, are not seeing the same issues that the newcomers are having.

Which is super annoying, because I’m often on my elementalist when it happens, and then I’m yelling “FEELIN’ HOT!” in the middle of my performance when it re-attunes me automagically.

I’m starting a new petition to add an ability to the bell where you can yell “FEELIN’ HOT!” whilst playing.

Kegbrawl has the same problem. The question is: why? You can make Tournament PvP games with a complete premade team. But you can also make a group of 3, and get two randoms from the pool. The system is existing, so why is it not used for all the activities? This is what makes no sense in my point of view

Agreed. I’m wondering if “can’t fix” is more like a “won’t fix”, since clearly the grouping feature has to be similar to what we see in PvP.

The random teams is what keeps me from playing kegbrawl as well. If they insist on keeping all activities unplayable with friends, then they’ll continue to be unpopular.

Switch to any other octave and limit will raise to 14 minutes. Works even after switching back to middle octave

I haven’t found that it actually works that way. The indicator will say 14 minutes if you change octaves, but it still expires at the original time.

I agree with this – I’d love to get a bit longer on the unbreakable bell as well. I can only get about 2/3rds of the way through O Holy Night before it drops.

Which is super annoying, because I’m often on my elementalist when it happens, and then I’m yelling “FEELIN’ HOT!” in the middle of my performance when it re-attunes me automagically.

It’s totally throwing off my performance.

To Josh:

I understand the feeling – I’m a bit of a bleeding heart myself and have known what it’s like to build something that I thought was great and that others would love, only to have it turn out not quite like I thought and a vocal group of folks loudly let me know about it.

I do want you to know, though, that the Clocktower is the most fun I have ever had in this game.

This is not hyperbole: It took me six hours to learn and memorize the pattern on Friday night on one character, and on Saturday, I parked a second character – one I’d barely used before – in the clocktower and I rarely had her leave the instance from that morning onward.

Since then, I clocked over 24 hours of running the clocktower repeatedly for thrills and for ToT bags. I loved it. I had so many interesting encounters with other players and did all sorts of random things, from between-round brawls to roleplaying to cheering each other on to hiding behind the chest and popping out to surprise them as they finally reached the top.

This instance is my absolute favorite and I will be very sad that it’ll be gone before I get home from work today. It makes me sadder, though, to think you regret it in any way, because I thought it was brilliant and so much fun. Please don’t feel down about it.

A dev just opened the doors on Tarnished Coast, if you haven’t been able to get in, check and see if they’ve been spawned, I suggest.

I just saw some in Queensdale again, so there’s something at least!

I’m looking into some potential blocking issues with the events right now. If you think your world is having an issue your best bet is to:

1) Report it here. Make sure you tell me what world it was so I can see it and possibly get it fixed.
2) Try one of other maps
3) Trick or treat at a normal door with a few people. The odds that it will convert to a portal are are about 1 in 10. It stays open for 30 seconds.

Tarnished Coast appears to be afflicted – Gendarran has never once worked during the course of the event, Queensdale’s Scholar Anders is bugged, and no idea about Kessex – it says that the realm is available, but there are no doors.
