Just a curiosity. I’m wondering why your MMO of choice is Guild Wars 2 as opposed to, say, World of Warcraft?
Personally, I’ve got a friend that plays WoW a lot. A lot. He’s been trying to get me into it, but it never really clicked with me. And now that I’ve found GW2, I doubt it ever will.
Because to me, WoW is largely a game about waiting. You’re waiting for your spellcasts, you’re waiting for a mob to respawn, you’re waiting for your character to finish walking across the forest, you’re waiting for a ten-minute cooldown (seriously, what’s up with that?) whereas in GW2, the only things I’ve had to wait for are loading screens and LFG.
Also, WoW has so much lore behind it that, as a new player and story buff, I find it intimidating just to learn about the world I’m entering. I’ve tried to read Wowpedia pages to catch up on the story, but when every single character, organization, minor faction, and blade of grass has a novel’s worth of backstory I just don’t want to put in the effort of all that reading to understand a world I’m not confident I want to stay in. GW2 has less lore, which can be seen as a weakness, but it also makes it easier to learn. And it’s exciting to be part of a developing story through Living World.
Those are my thoughts, at least. What about you guys? What makes GW2 stand out for you against the million other MMOs out there?
If I’m not mistaken, Primordus is lurking around in the Depths of Tyria. In otherwords, the fact that it’s underground means it has the potential to move around anywhere in the world and pop up wherever it wants to. Plus, we’ve seen Destroyers everywhere from Mount Maelstrom to Kessex Hills, and even Lornar’s Pass in the Shiverpeaks. It’s not too far fetched to think Primordus could decide there’s something there worth checking out.
Another possible explanation for the tremors up north could be… well, I believe there’s another bloodstone up there. Maybe Lazarus is up to something?
Or maybe it is Jormag, and this season will deal with multiple Elder Dragons rampaging all at once.
Personally, I’m applying Occam’s Razor and assuming it’s just Primordus digging around. For the moment, at least.
You’re not alone in this matter – I’ve also spent hours on end moving face sliders pixel by pixel. I get what you mean by the preview looking very different from the in-game model. I think it has something to do with the angles and lighting discrepancies between them.
Funnily enough, I had the exact same problem in Skyrim, and found this article (https://levelskip.com/rpgs/better-looking-characters) offering some advice. I’ve found some of it is applicable to Guild Wars 2’s character customizer as well. The main things I took away from it are that it’s usually best to slightly alter a preset rather than radically change it to suit your needs; and take some time to understand what features you actually think of as attractive/preferable. Maybe Google the celebrities or models that you think look good, take some time to analyze why you think they look good, and then you can replicate those features for your character.
Having spent considerable time staring at closeups of Guild Wars 2 human females myself, I can also say that in my personal opinion, an attractive face is easily achieved with the ninth default face option (not the ones exclusive to makeover kits), and sliding the “eye height” option all the way to the right. This is a good starting point for me, and from there I usually just make minor adjustments to the chin and nose sliders. You might not share my view of beauty, but it’s an option for you to try at least.
Good luck, and welcome to Tyria!
Some context: the third character I took to level 80 was an Elementalist. I put a lot of investment into them, spending a mountain of gold on crafting materials, getting two crafting disciplines to level 80, making a full set of exotic Zealot’s armour (I wanted an off-healer build, speccing into Water/Arcane/Tempest), and spending laurels for Ascended trinkets. I was admittedly dying a lot more with this build than my other toons (a Necro and a Chronomancer), but I was having fun, especially when I ran into another player that I could keep buffed and healed in the open world.
Then one evening, as I was running around Tangled Depths trying to get to the next chapter of the HoT story, I ran into a nest of Mordrem Rolling Devils and died almost instantly. I’d been killed by trash mobs plenty of times before, but for some reason this put me over the edge, and I got so upset that I deleted my Tempest.
This was several weeks ago, and now I’m sort of almost regretting that impulsive decision. Sure, I wasn’t having a lot of fun dying all the time, but it was nice to have a dedicated healer character, and I feel guilty about destroying such expensive, hard-to-attain equipment. Have I committed a great taboo by deleting a level 80 character?
I realize this is an odd question, but I’m just looking for a second opinion to help me resolve my conflicted thoughts.
I’d rather not go Celestial, since I’m not doing any condition damage besides the Burning I inflict as a side effect of my fire fields, and I’d rather be more focused in my role than all over the place.
Runes of Water look pretty interesting, though. I’ll think about it. Thank you for your input!
I’ve decided that my third lvl 80 toon is going to be a support/dps Tempest. I know that building this way means I won’t excel in either area, but I’m just looking to be competent in both, and I only ever do PvE content.
The plan right now is to go Scepter/Warhorn, execute as many fire/blast combos as I can to give the party Might before I sit in water attunement for Vulnerability and Soothing Mists. Once my cooldowns run, repeat until the mobs are dead.
The only thing I’m not sure about for this build so far is the gear. I’ve been looking at getting Zealot’s armour and weapons with Zerk trinkets, but I keep hearing that Healing Power is absolutely useless. At the same time, according to the wiki Soothing Mists and Water Trident both scale with 100% of Healing Power, with Mists doubling with the Grandmaster trait. Even so, is it really that awful? Should I just go full Berserk and forget the Zealot’s?
Also, I’m torn between Runes of the Scholar or Monk. Any advice for either of these dilemmas would be helpful. Thank you!
Hey, just a small curiosity I’ve been wondering.
Does the Inspiration trait Healing Prism proc on the passive healing ticks from Signet of the Ether? Am I giving nearby allies a small heal every three seconds?
Just wondering, not a make-or-break build question.
Unless you are concerned about WvW, it doesn’t really matter what server you chose as this game has Megaservers.
The game puts people from different servers on the same map shards. It will try to prioritize friends/party members/guildies/server onto the same map shard but other than that, everyone is thrown together.
This means you can join any server and, except for WvW, you can play with anyone in the same data group. You can be on any NA server and be in a TC roleplaying guild and play with them. To find a TC role playing guild you can check the forum Looking for or try guesting to the TC server and see if the game puts you on a shard that has other role players and ask in map chat about a guild (try doing that on whatever server you choose also as there is likely to be role playing people on whatever shard you land on).
Well, this is very good news. I think I’ll give this a shot. Thanks!
From what I hear, Necromancers have a lot of trouble in group PvE in the later game (I haven’t gotten close to this point yet). Mesmers are really difficult, especially early game, but if you can figure it out then it’s really powerful. If you can handle the bajillions of pink butterflies on your screen, go for it. Warrior is just strong in any situation, so that’s definitely the safest bet if you’re only looking at how “strong” a class is, but then again EVERYONE plays one, so…
Also, when I’m saying “one class is strong” or “this is not strong,” I don’t have actual numbers to back me up, and the actual difference may be quite minuscule.
I’m a pretty big roleplayer in fantasy MMORPGs, and Guild Wars 2 is just a perfect setting for it. I’ve done some searching for where the bulk of RP activity is, and to my dismay the unofficial roleplaying server Tarnished Coast is full, and transferring there is looking to be more difficult than sneaking by a charr bouncer. So I’m wondering if there are any other NA worlds that have a large, dedicated roleplaying community?
Thanks for your input, everyone! I think I’ve decided on a Mesmer. Something about its aesthetic just resonates with me, and building a Phantasmal army sounds pretty neat.
Thanks again for helping me out, guys!
Hey, people,
So I just got GW2 a couple of weeks ago, and in that time I’ve been having trouble deciding on a “main” profession. I’ve tried pretty much all of them, and I’ve narrowed it down to either a Necromancer, Elementalist, or Mesmer, but I just can’t decide which of them I like the best. So I thought I’d ask here.
I do have an idea of the kind of playstyle I like. In any game, my favourite classes/systems are the ones that have a high ramping system (i.e. they get stronger the longer a fight goes on). This kind of mechanic is what I’m looking for the most. Also, I’m not huge into PvP, although I’m sure I’ll dabble in it at least occasionally, but I’m going to focus on PvE. So I guess what I’m asking is, of the scholar professions which one performs best in long, drawn-out fights against huge bosses or in dungeons, whatever.
As for the professions themselves, here’s what I like and dislike about each of them.
Elementalist
What appeals to me:
-Their style of more natural magic is a stylistic pro to me.
-The mainhand dagger’s ability to perform combos and gain Might stacks seems to fit with the ramping playstile I’m looking for.
-Their adaptability is pretty neat. The fact that they can switch to a healing style to help an ally before turning back to full damage and blowing everything up is very cool.
What makes me hesitant:
-Everyone seems to play one. I’m not a huge fan of doing what everyone else is doing.
-They seem to kill things really quickly. I know this is nitpicking, but I like to enjoy my fights before they end. Elementalist seems to be more of a “kill it and get out” thing.
Mesmer
What appeals to me:
-Aesthetically pleasing. Of all the scholars, Mesmer spells look the coolest to me. Them pink butterflies!
-Their ability to build an army of Phantasms rolls in to the ramping style I’m looking for at first glance.
-Mainhand sword makes me think of a magical fencer, which is just awesome.
What makes me hesitant:
-Their fragility. Of all the scholars, I’ve died more as a Mesmer than any other.
-Illusions are easy to kill. Phantasms may hit hard, but I find that they die almost instantly. If I don’t die first, that is.
Necromancer
What appeals to me:
-Their general style of “I won’t kill you, I’ll just outlive you”. Every guide I’ve read about Necromancers seems to say that even power builds are designed to wage wars of attrition in combat.
-Mainhand dagger’s life stealing abilities. While using your opponent’s life to refill your own isn’t the most traditional style of ramping, I really enjoy it.
-Death Form is just ridiculous. I get way too much fun popping into it and laying waste to everything around me with its 4 and 5 skills. It also kind of fits in with a ramping style.
What makes me hesitant:
-Every guide I’ve read about Necromancer’s has said that they’re not popular in groups (especially dungeons), since they’re a very self-interested profession. I don’t want to get kicked from groups just because I’m a Necromancer.
-At first glance, they don’t seem to really have a mechanic that helps them ramp up their strength besides Death Form, which while amazingly fun is a very temporary situational boost.
So those are my thoughts on what I’m looking for, and how I feel about the three scholars. I know that the general advice on threads like this is “Play them all and see which one you like best” but I’ve been trying them all and I like and dislike all of them. So I’m turning to the community for a little slice of advice. Thanks for the help!
