Strengthening the "x/D" builds

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to get right to it and make a suggestion for strengthening x/D builds for thief. As we all know right now D/P is the most viable thief build right now, yes there are other builds but they aren’t as good. The main reason for this state is because the D/P set has the burst of dagger main hand combined with the utility of pistol offhand and when the two are combined it creates even MORE utility and burst.

There has been many nerfs and changes to the sets which were merited in previous metas, but the game is evolving and x/D is being left in the dust. It’s time we do something to save it. In the Dev’s defense offhand dagger HAS been getting slight buffs lately but its not enough. Here is a suggestion that I think is within reason:

Dancing Dagger: Make this skill blind (on each bounce)

I don’t think this is unreasonable. Shortbow, p/p, s/p, d/p, staff, speargun all blind. all x/d’s do not except s/d (though s/d takes alot more risk then other sets and the reward is beyond mediocre imo)

Ha! Well yes that’s true. I was referring more to how sometimes I will just run out of a telegraph instead of dodging while attacking with melee, and having 35% more speed helps me do that faster. It enables me if I want, to choose to save or use my dodge in those situations or similar to that. I guess its a trade off. . .atleast in the way that I play.

I like the builds. Pretty similar to mine except i run dash and s/d. S/d isn’t that great or anything but I’m kind of a sword/dagger loyalist so I’m always trying s/d builds. Anyway…I really like bound but…what the HECK do you do about run speed? I feel sooooo slow without swiftness!

Appreciate the hard work, Karl. It’s starting to show that you are putting thought into this spec. Dodges have really improved. With the changes you listed it gives them that edge they’ve been needing, obviously the animations are still being worked on but in general during beta they felt smoother then before.

As for the proposal for weakening strikes to add a mod effect I vote for taking less damage from weakened foes. It wIll benefit all types of builds, rewarding you for paying attention and applying weakness at key windows in your enemies rotation.

Channeled vigor just feels SO out of place. It’s as if it’s on the wrong class. I can’t see myself self ever considering using it. The benefits and stuff are good yes but I keep finding myself saying “This heal would be good…if I was a sword n’ board full plate armor tank maybe..” We’re so squishy a mechanic like that just gets us killed. I think it really needs to be looked at. It breaks the flwo of combat and really makes us vulnerable. Maybe if it gave protection or blocked during channel? I dunno. The endurane gain is nice but everytime I use it (in pvp) i die before I finish channeling it

Just want to make a compliment thread. We all had a lot of negatives to say (rightfully so) but there WERE positives so I wanted to make this thread to give the dev something positive to look at amidst all our groaning.

So back to the compliments . . .

Bandit’s Defense – This ability feels perfect! I love it! The feeling of blocking that bull rush and snap kicking someone across the face is so gratifying! The animation, the mechanic, everything about it (even if it gets nerfed a few seconds)! I had so many clutch moments and fight flips! It really fits into your description of the traitline and gives us some power in a toe to toe brawl on the battle field.

Impact Strike – ….FREAKING love this. I saw a bit of negative feedback about it being boring and what not but I think people are using it wrong or something. The feeling of stomping someone who is still standing . . . again gratifying. I got a nerco at 25% hp who was rezzing someone with my finishing blow, he died instantly AWESOME (I was like “HOW DARE YOU REZ INFRONT OF ME!”) lol. I like everything about it. The fact that it’s hand to hand combat, the interupts and stuns, the chain effect, being able to stow weapon on a stage if someone dodges and recast, really awesome. Had some people make really clutch dodges and teleports out from under my finishing blow which was also awesome to watch. The moves are recycled but I don’t really mind so much. I love having finishing power and the fact that the enemy sees their health is a bit low and becomes very worried about my finishing blow. It makes me feel dangerous.

You get guys seem like you put a lot of work into daredevil, watching the stream you guys really came off as caring about this spec so hopefully from everyone’s feedback this class will be in good shape at launch. On that note:

-You mentioned Daredevil being able to fight multiple people in the stream, roaming the battlefield and staying in the fight more as an evasive brawler. The only way I can do this is if I run completely defensive using acro, dd and trickery. I wish I could play more offensive lines and be rewarded if I play well but they just don’t seem to stay alive at all.

Distracting Daggers – I really liked the skill Distracting Daggers on stream. Now that I’ve used it, it feels rather impractical. Feels really weird needing to charge up before using it. It takes away from the feeling of an assassin quickly flicking hidden daggers from his sleeve. The cd in between throws is also really weird and breaks the whole feel of fluidity and combo potential. In its current state I would regretfully never consider using it. I feel like if you made it instant (no awkward cast wind up) and you could use the daggers at will during the window the skill would be good (maybe that would be op? Doesn’t seem like it but idk).

Driven Fortitude- I was hoping I could run CS, DD, Trix and driven fort would be decent sustain but it just feels really weak. When running acro, Trix, dd slotting all heal over time abilities, the total add up is nice but I don’t wanna play a zippy healtank to actually be able to fight, I want to play a martial brawler who prowls the battlefield cracking faces open with his staff or whatever. I wish DD had some better sustain, not necessarily “free sustain” I want it to be challenging to play but when I successfully evade an important attack I feel like it needs more payoff .

Dash – the concept is awesome! I like it a lot! But it feels weird kinda like a twisted version of the old Version of Hard to Catch. I really dunno how I would fix it. But I will say it doesn’t feel as fluid as I had expected. Maybe it would functio Better if it was like this?

It’s called assassins rush. It dashes you through the target and puts you behind them like a different spin on flanking strike and if you have no target it dashes you forward. Just a suggestion though.

Thank you for your hard work on this trait line! Just needs a bit of good polish and tlc.

p.s. All the thieves I fought in this beta were using D/P just thought I’d throw that out there

I did just say DD has a lot going for it as an elite spec. At the moment, I am genuinely excited by what DD brings to the table. But like I said before… without some core changes, it’ll ultimately be for naught.

Just want to clear this up because there seems to be a lot of confusion and pessimism on the forum…Bounding Dodger DOES function like heartseeker. The damage is applied before the finisher so it will not break stealth. The devs have already stated this a couple times. People must be skipping over the post.

Just wanted to reply to the quotes about no damage. The fights just a little while ago went like this….black powder, black powder, black powder, shadow refuge, blinding powder, Backstab (8.7k), I shadow step, he steals+ plus heartseeker (interupt 2k + 7.5k) I’m down, his improv procc’d from steal and he pops refuge ontop of me and stomps me. Vs the mesmer…stealth, chime sounds….10 secs pass by…hmmm guess he’s not gonna figh-BOOM downed. So while I agree that in pvp you can’t cap, when I’m harrassing a point and you can do 18k in about 1.2 seconds and down me…I have to disagree heavily. Yes they do no damage in stealth, technically anyway, it sure seemed like the mesmer did…I pretty much drop dead in a split second and if they fail it’s back into to stealth they go.

THIS IS NOT THE CASE EVERYTIME, sometimes I outplay them but even when I win it’s very exasperating. Thanks for the feedback. I agree with most of the stuff you guys said.

Also some of these spec’s excel at assassinating high priority targets and also can share boons from stealth. For instance if I run the d/p meta and I hidden thief stealth super-steal into the fight my allies around me are granted might, swiftness, fury, 2 stolen boons and vigor, I guess thats a slight boost to the team, maybe not. And no the thief profession is not all about stealth.

@ Jana, pretty sure I stated that the d/d is not that great and used to be better but that it was just an example. Thank you for your input. And regarding all those other classes passives, yeah I feel the same way but the stealth just happens to be what was on my mind.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to talk about spammable stealth a bit. I don’t really have a goal to this post but I wanted to just give my opinion on spamming stealth. Before I say anything about it I just wanted to say that I main a thief. I have 2 level 80’s and they are both thieves. I would say I have about 3k+ hours on it, it’s pretty much the only thing I play because it’s my fav class and I have a lot of fun.

So back to spammable stealth. I feel like stealth promotes great reward for terrible gameplay. I feel like in order to beat someone you should have to do things like interrupt a heal, wait til the right second to burst, carefully use your cooldowns, anticipate what your opponent is going to do, /facepalm when you miss an important attack. I am not talking stealth in general, I am talking about spamming it.

As an example (I know d/d is in a tough spot right now, but when it was better) a d/d thief opens up with his combo and you can dodge it if yon anticipate it, I dodge, he sees me dodge stows his weapon before cnd is over and recasts it still landing it and stealthing, a skill shot. This kind of gameplay is awesome to me. He comes out of stealth and I know he’s gonna need to cnd to stealth so I see him casting it and dodge but he cancels again and then snags me with it and lands his backstab. If he’s got good timing he can restealth just leaving a split second window between CnDs, also a skill shot imo. These types of things should be rewarded.

I believe stealth is important and should be very strong in stealth centered builds but it being spammable is too easy, too high a reward and encourages players to play and win simply by abuse and not by making smart and skillful decisions.

So should they nerf stealth? No it needs something else, like a rework or something. Maybe a stealth that not as spammable but gives a HUGE buff on reveal. Something like (just literally off the top of my head, maybe this is terrible): “When revealed by landing an attack from behind, gain 2 seconds of shadow form” and shadow form would cloak you in shadows making you untargetable or and causing your next attack to siphon a large amount of hp. Again I don’t know if that even sounds good but just an example.

The more I hear about your experience with this build the more I wanna see it in action. Maybe you could make a dueling, roaming or spvp video with commentary showing how you utilize it’s strengths and weaknesses in different situations? Doesn’t have to be super fancy or super edited and spliced. I’m sure everyone checking this build out would benefit from the info.

Yeah, I tried this build on and off since the new patch. It’s okay, I’d give it a bronze medal. One missed cloak and dagger and you’re kinda dead though. And it’s int regen is really just not good. Damage is pretty spiky once you work around, block, aegis, blind though.

As I said utilizing CnD is key in this build, as in any DD build focused around power xD
And if you miss one you shouldn’t be dead, especially not in a 1v1 1v2 situation, if you are its your fault, not the builds. The build doesn’t make you a better player, it just caters to a certain play style that takes a bit of thinking and knowing when and when not to act, when to stay in stealth to keep observing and when to attack.

The ini regen is as good as any other build without SoI but we only have 12, saying the ini is bad kinda tells me you usually spam skills every now and then, Ive never been in a situation where I couldn’t use the skill I needed
Plus you have the regen in stealth which you need to utilize

The build won’t do the work for you!

Oh, the build works. It’s just its a bronze medal build Imo. I actually only run x/d builds that are power focused. The int is no where close to the most viable builds right now but I’m glad you do well with it. I just find it very easy to shut this build down with permablinds or simply out maneuvering it. A lot easier now since when I see it in my main build they don’t blind me anymore. And stealth does kind of do a lot of the work for you, just not as much as before. I would say it’s one of the easier builds to play. Anyway, d/d in my opinion is one of the most true thief build in my opinion, I’m glad there are still people playing it.

Foes affected by Ragequit Venom that die will be immediately downed after waypointing by a summoned thief that will perform a Backstab and then dissappear. This will randomly occur once every 1-8 minutes . Venom effect lasts one hour. Unblockable.

Just wanted to drop by and say that this April’s fools joke is really, really freaking annoying. Some people like it. It was funny when I logged in til I realized that the pvp and wvw maps and dungeons were also like it. And its been hours upon hours now…I’ve actually not been playing much since it started, I keep trying but it’s actually infuriating to listen and watch. Trailers and stuff are funny or even a fake specialization or something but 24 hours of hazy yellow filter with my character screaming airplane noises and my arms out in every animation is just plain FREAKING annoying. It’d be different if I could get you guys back for it but I can’t. I have half a mind to drive down there and actually play a prank or two (lol). Anyway…I wish I could drop a few f-bombs in caps in there to get the point across because that’s how much its annoying me but the post will just get blocked so /shrug.

Everyone feel free to disagree with how I feel, I really don’t care.

P.s. Someone should head over there to anet and do some kind of practical joke to get back at them. Like park an airplane infront of all the exits so they can’t open the doors to leave. And leave them there for 24 hours lol

Hmmm…gw2wiki says fire and air “cannot crit”. Regarding the heal I was aware that it had a separate damage coefficient then the heal. The heal is fixed, but if the damage portion can crit I may consider it.

I say this seriously and not as a troll or insult, no offense OP but if it’s going the way you are saying then you’re really just a pretty bad player. Especially if you’re using a stealth siege trap man, that’s just terrible. There are the Rangers who take some burst and panic make poor choices because they can’t see and there are the others who stay calm and it turns into a great fight or I get nuked. I know you’re frustrated and yes sa is strong bt realize this…you really just don’t know what you’re doing. With a good thief its a mind game you can’t just use skills in a predictable pattern and expect to win. Anyway I’ll tell you this, one of the major key tactics to fighting a thief in stealth is knowing where they are in stealth (yes, that’s right, knowing without seeing). When a thief fights a good player it feels almost as if that player knows where they are and can see them even though they are invisible. You’re just not on this level. There are other things too but I would find a good ranger running the same build and roam with them. If they have as hard of a time as you then they are not good and you should find someone who is. So the bad news is well…that you’re kinda bad, the good news…you can do it! I believe in you!

I had been using an s/d thief from the first day. Back then it was officially the funnest assassin style build I had ever played in any mmo. I don’t I just love the idea of shadowstep and body flicker on an assassin. I endured all the nerf after nerfs. The dancing dagger nerf, the couple Ls nerfs, the fs nerf, the several ir nerfs, the zerker change up. I’m tired of enduring. Maybe thief is balance now idk but the style of which I have to play my build now is enjoyable for me. It’s just not fun. It’s clunky, unsynergized, clumsy, awkward. And many combos that were a result of creativity and discovery while putting in many hours as a thief have been crushed. They punish you for being creative. I’m done for a while, I’m not gonna reroll because I love being as assassin. The whole concept and look, I love. But Anet has dug the class into a hole and the balancing they do just makes the class high risk and punishment with low reward. I’m gonna be shelving the game for a while (I actually came back from a 3 month break just a couple days ago to see all the new changes).

On another note for everyone who makes fun of thief for being high burst and high damage, this must be your first mmo. The Assassin class is supposed to be the highest melee single target burst in the game, not some tanky, condi spamming wannabe engi with more stealth like its becoming. They are not supposed to fight fair or with honor, they attack from the back. Fact is people don’t like being assassinated. JFK didn’t say “Oh yeah that feels so good, right in my brain”. It’s supposed to suck.

I have a great idea. How bout you stop mentioning these player’s builds and names on the forums. They’ve become the center piece of childish, meaningless arguing when they never posted in the first place. I understand that you admire them and their builds but please people, stop using their names. It brings unwanted in game attention and causes silly pointless messes like the one above.

I’ve been playing thief for more than a year now (mostly spvp) and I recently started roaming in WvW. A shadow arts thief doesn’t kill me regardless of the class I’m running, but it is really fricking annoying having one follow you across the map, stealthing away when you try to fight, all the while looking for a buddy or two to take you down with. So yeah, I agree, shadow arts is way too forgiving and needs a nerf when it comes to WvW, but for sPvP, it’s a really lackluster trait line and could do with a revamp. Jumper’s idea of Shadow Arts trait focusing on going in and out of stealth rather than constantly staying in stealth was a pretty good suggestion imo. There’s more counterplay involved against such builds with interrupting/evading their stealths that way.

The only thieves that do that to me are D/p thieves. X/d thieves once you’re in the open they need have to fight you or start blowing defensive cds to stay stealthed. Actually yesterday I was fooling around with d/p and ended keeping stealthed for 20 mins straight. It wasn’t a duel I was just testing it(if you don’t believe me let me know and I’ll post a vid lmao).

Anyway I do like Jumper’s idea for stealth though I don’t think its op for builds besides d/p. I personally would rather ANet focus on things like making our other trait lines he more viable so that we could play things in wvw besides shadow arts. For instance they could add a skill in acro that makes you remove one condition on dodge. The main reason I don’t play lines like Acrobatics is because the sustain isn’t very good. to be healing you have to be constantly attacking and if you’re standing on a condition stack there/s not much to be done.

I am SO tired of thieves being overpowered. Did you know they have a trait that lets them regenerate hp while in stealth? Well I’m sick of it. As a thief if you’re not skilled enough to not get hit by conditions, melee and ranged attacks then you should suffer for it. If you can’t survive without having heals then you need to L2P and I believe giving them stealth regen is just rewarding that kind of gameplay.

Another issue I have is that alot of thieves who go 30 into shadow arts have access to traits that remove conditions and cause blinds. If all they had was shadow step for removal and say smokescreen for blinds it would require much more skillful gameplay and also would be more rewarding, requiring them to take almost 0 hits or conditions. Without the regen, condi strip, and blinds in shadow arts they have plenty of other GREAT traits that get overlooked like Power Shots and Patience or they could go into Acrobatics and take awesome traits like Hard to Catch or Assassin’s retreat.

I run a Hammer- mace/shield Warrior with Perplexity runes and when I fight thieves with shadow arts they just strip my confusion stacks with well times shadow steps and stealths and then I die. When I DO kill them it takes WAY longer then it should.

Anyway my main points I’m trying to get across here is that Shadow Arts needs some major nerfs and the thief class needs to require more skill like the Warrior class. Ty for your time.

Fun Fact:
It took me weeks after the LS introduction to stand a chance against caed’s d/p trickery (you can see some early duels on my youtube)
I tried getting r50+ players to play this matchup, pitting blinx vs acandis both with absolutely 0 experience to d/p and s/d. The results weren’t even close blinx’s D/P completely demolished him.

I’d say its very similar to the game ‘DiveKick’, where its extremely simple (2 buttons) on the surface but an infinite amount of depth and mindgames.

and if u see where this is going… they are going to dumb the class down…. up the defense/hp or something or give protection or aegis…idk yet but something defensively will change.

i notice that the best players in the game (skill wise) always play thief and engineer 2ndly. they are the two hardest to play but when played with a very high lvl of skill they are very strong.

for instance….if i play against a bad thief its and instant gank kill and ty for my bag. against a good thief im having a tug of war battle where i cant afford a mistake and same against engineers.

warriors are anets noodly noobie class where a good or badplayer is going to do roughly the same. seriously get a 2 month player to pvp on warrior thena 1 year player to do it on same build warrior. u will barely notice a difference other than perhaps a better timed dodge roll or 2.

I agree. And the inf return combos imo are high skill cap too and so fun and creative for me. For instance that cnd return. I was running a shadow build wvw and returning into that stripped a condi, regen’d some hp, gave 2 stacks of might, and blinded that incoming attack…a lot of rewards for paying attention and staying on your toes. This is gone now and and reallly makes me sad.

God plz no…no no no. I used to play wow. This became a meta. An arena match of quick kills where mistakes earned your death turned into 2 hour+ matches because everyone had heal ticks and healers and high resilience. In fact it got so bad they had to put a cap on the match times. I pray Guild wars 2 doesn’t go down that road. The dodging, the reflexes, thinking ten steps ahead in that very second, that’s what i want to play.

S/D was the antithesis of skillful play. People clamoring that the nerf took away “skill” from the build need to honestly kitten what that word means. S/D was too forgiving, very similar to the current warrior builds. You could make mistake after mistake and still do well. That’s not skill, that’s broken.

Read OP’s post. If that doesn’t exemplify skilled play to you, I’m not sure what else to say to you. Many players just seem to dislike thieves because they can be frustrating to fight – frustrating to fight != forgiving, overpowered, or easy. S/D was a high skill cap build, probably thieves highest – the winners of the first cash tournament agree, most “top” players agree.

I really hope the dev’s read this. The synergy is so awkward now. Again no tele on stun in not my issue it’s the cast time breaking combo synergy. Please fix this, or at least respond!

I really could care less about using it as a stomp technique. I have a slew of other ways to do it. It’s the synergy that I care about. It’s synergy has taken a mighty blow. But it’s strange I thought we were supposed to get some kind of interupt to deal with the inf stomping. Like a new mechanic. So it’s kind of a seperate issue. like when you return to an opponent you get knocked down or something….although since its not a stunbreak anymore they would be able to cc us and stop it I presume.

Exactly. This nerf REALLY hurt our creativity with sword. I guess I kinda understand the stunbreak change but it needs to be redesigned so it doesn’t punish creativity and skill, again I’m guessing they didn’t intend for this change to effect in this way, not knowing so many things were connectd to it. I hope.

Hello Just wanted to bring something to everyone’s attention. So I’m a dedicated sword dagger thief. I love sword dagger, it’s my fav assassin build I’ve played in any mmo so far. “A master of stepping through shadow’s” “the Shadow Warrior”.

I understand the need for a nerf to infiltrator’s strike. A spammable stunbreak/condi strip/ teleport /escape I mean THAT’s strong. Keep in mind we thieves once caught are easily dispatched but never the less a spammable stun break is too strong ok, I agree. However you put a small cast time on it. I was worried this would be an issue with escaping the many speedy burst combo’s in the game, I logged in and tried it and it was cutting it close in my opinion but I didn’t complain. But then I realized after using it in live combat that it’s a self interupt. I was actually killed a few times. Not because I couldn’t break a stun but because I was repeatedly interupting my self from awesome combo’s we used to do with inf strike.

Here are a few things I we can’t do anymore do to the cast time:

1. Infiltrator’s return while mid cast on heal to juke the enemy trying to interupt.

Sometimes I’m being bum rushed while I heal so I fake them out and stand there casting as they rush in and then teleport.

2. Inf return dodge combo.
Sometimes people like to be real funny and put traps and wells or do 100b etc.on my return circle so dodging into return can help counter that if I’m paying attention.

3. inf return while casting cloak and dagger when I see someone waiting on top of my return.

I love doing this one and imo it takes skill and timing and is very rewarding when someone walks across your return circle and you port back and catch then with the tail end of your cloak and dagger.

4. Inf Return while mid cast on shadow refuge.
Another fun use of return, fun things like a team mate is about to be stomped next to your return and you start cast of refuge and and return stealthing him just in time and starting a revive.

5. inf returning while in flanking strike
Another way to return while dodging and a good way to conceal the follow up of larcenous strike

6. inf returning while mid cast on a venom to juke enemy from interupt.

Again sometimes starting the cast and then porting can confuse the enemy and cause them to hesitate on interrupt or to bum rush your current location thinking they’ll catch you in time because cast finishes.

These are all broken by the cast time that’s been implemented. I have a feeling maybe this wasn’t foreseen but it’s been turned into a self interupt which is gamebreaking in swordplay. Again I understand no being able to teleport while stunned but the cast time effects many things and combos not just stunbreaking.

It just feels clumsy and awkward and broken. It was a fluid dance of blades before. Poetry in motion (lol).

K…so you’re in a fight…your kiting, dodging, you and a few people are battling it out. It’s getting intense…your nerves are going, reflexes helping you evade attacks and position yourself around the terrain…suddenly a mesmer comes out of the woodwork and moa’s you…you try to use the escape skill and you run 5 steps forward…you dodge but it’s not enough…DEAD. EVERYTIME. Just wanted to say that this is REALLY REALLY annoying. No skills, no stun breaks and a nerfed escape. Seems like its uncounterable. YES it’s easy to see it being cast…in a 1v1. Anyone else really irritated by the new version of this skill?

I know that the Sigil of Paralyzation actually also increases Daze duration but can someone please confirm for me whether the Sigil of Impact also increases the damage on people being affected by Daze also?

Sword dagger builds

Fellow thieves! I need your help! Does anyone know a fun sword dagger build? I play d/d pretty well and I like it alot. D/p has a lot of utility and I also roll that sometimes along with p/d condition. I like all those builds. However, since before the game first came out I said to myself, “I want to be sword dagger” I adore shadow step.

I can’t come up with a build that seems viable for sword dagger (talking wvw). I don’t know if it’s because I’m not rocking the right armor and runes to compliment or what. I know sword dagger is one one the less used and a bit broken builds but I have fought VERY good s/d thieves rarely but still. If anyone has a fun build feel free to share.

yeah I’m 3300 power 100% crit damage and hidden killer and 4 out of 5 backstabs and 2.5-3.5k and they i get a 7-8k on like the 5th one. I switched the trait out and it was exactly the same
