Welcome to GW2! Where managing a pet truly matters, where there’s reward/punishment on timing returns and swap pets, where choosing the right pet matter.
when was the last time you brought a ranged pet to fight and walked to a certain spot and “placed” your pet to act as a pewpew turret? Do you use “guard” at all? Shame on you, because the ranger as a whole even though not perfect, is awesome! They even buffed the HP to dumb it down, which i totally was against it and still there’s complaint.
So let me control my pet so I can manage it properly.
Don’t worry though instead of compiling a useful list of changes that would benefit the ranger class as a hole please tell the rest of us what trait points and skills are required to have a pet that actually hits a moving target.
You know what was great about pets in WoW? (Warlock main but still) being able to keybind things like the Fel Guard’s stun and Succubus’ Charm to activate when I wanted it too and instantly. Not have my pet stand there auto attacking only to cast them several seconds afterwards if at all, all the while using every other skill it has at random intervals.
Threads like this are still applicable 10 months down the line ( Numbers are obviously varied since pets were nerfed in the damage department)

Keep stroking your ego about being pigeon holed into specific trait and skill usage in order to get your classes defining ability to somewhat work. Don’t worry though, you’re the unique snowflake amongst rangers. Clearly you are the chosen one who will usher in a new age of rangers who will snub their noses at such things like ‘’better pet control’’ and ‘’Pet survivability’’ what are we basic plebeians? We shall have none of that on your watch.
One of the dynamic events in I think it’s Blaze-ridge steps where you aid an Ogre in taming pets for his clan has a Merrie Melodies reference.
On occasion after taming one he will state ‘’ I will love him and pet him and call him George’’ which is a reference to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JlVqfC8-UI
I think he is bugged completely. We defeated the Howling King and no cut scene has started
longbow isn’t bad people are just using it for the wrong purpose…
People are using the Longbow for the wrong purpose you mean damage, that thing it is tied to being in our power and crit trait lines.
Sorry but except for WvWvW the shortbow has just as much utility more dps ( Even without the bleed on Crossfire) and mobility than the longbow. The only thing the longbow has going for it is 300 extra range when traited and barrage’s aoe.
I really love the feel of it but why bother using it when my shortbow gets the job done better and faster?
It hardly has more utility… it can apply poison, a 2 second cripple, and a daze to the enemy, and then it can give you a second dodge.
The longbow has a 10 stack of vuln (good for everyone in your team), a burst skill that’s essentially a shortbow with quickening zephyr, a big aoe cripple field that also punishes anything that stays in there, and a knockback with a really short CD. Shortbow totally doesn’t have it beat…
Longbow utility: Vuln, AoE Cripple and a knockback.
Shortbow: AoE Healing debuff, cripple and a daze/stun.
Rapid fire is the basic Shortbow attack speed.
You also completely ignored my point that the shortbow does more dps without the inclusions of its DoTs. Shortbow has the Longbow beat in everything bar WvWvW. People have the math and graphs showing the dps difference in other threads.

The Kodan would be a great addition to the races. Seeing as they are said as being older than the Norn ( They believe the Norn to be descendants of a group of Kodan who migrated south)
It would add more depth to the fight against Jormag and I can just see the addition of the Kodan bringing a lot more great lore opportunities.
@maeglin
You must buy gold.
No but I send a lot of food and items to my friends. What you suggested ruins all of that.
I am not even going to go into how terrible this idea is.
Heh and you can buy a weapon on the tp for like 4g with the same stats as well.
Nonsense. What “tanking” in this weapon? Counterattack? That’s all? Then engineer’s wrench also tanking weapon? But it can crits nearly by 5k and ranger’s GS in “tanking” build may not issue more than 1.5K
The fact that it has a stun, a spammable evade and a counterattack whilst been directly tied to two defensive trait lines?
Evade isn’t spammable. Why is a stun a defensive ability? One of the trait lines isn’t completely defensive, it’s the Condition Damage line… Your points are meandering, and more or less irrelevant to the topic.
The Greatsword has less damage output than other Ranger weapon options. This is a given. The evade is handy, and adds utility for sure. But what weapon sets don’t add “any” utility?? Very few attacks on any weapon or any proff are just “Har har 5 damage”.
The major thing going for the greatsword is it is good at aoe attacks… not that they hit especially hard, just that it can sustain aoe.
Should it do more damage? I think so, a little. Not gamebreaking either way though.
The evade is spammable when compared to any other evade mechanic it’s on the default attack. Since when is any form of cc not also considered a defensive mechanic? While Survival does contain condition damage it also contains toughness which is a defensive stat so don’t tell me I am being irrelevant.
You also seem to have looked over my first post here I stated
‘’Damage is a little low but it makes up for it in aoe. Maybe a slight buff is needed but not much as it is pretty much fine.’’

Well, I’m pretty sure there aren’t any weapons in the game that add no utility, but there are few that have as many positive features as the ranger’s greatsword.
It’s got a really good distance closer. It’s got a counterattack that doubles as a ranged snare. It’s got an interrupt. It’s got a broad swinging attack that makes it good for AE. It’s got an evade built into its autoattack chain that leaves you immune nearly half the time when executing the chain.
This is a really significant list of perks.
Personally, I agree that the damage is a bit too low, but I see the logic in having the weapon’s damage on the low end of the spectrum to offset the amount of defense and utility it grants. I wouldn’t expect a major buff for it. Maybe they could at least bump up the damage on Maul, though?
This pretty much sums up my views on it. It is a huge utility weapon which primary focuses on sticking to a target and survival.
Maul would be a great place to buff the damage on it.

Greatsword is more of the ’’tanking’’ weapon for rangers it seems. Since it benefits from the survival and nature magic trait trees as well as having an interupt+evade tied into it’s kit.

The speed of projectiles would be nice, but generally speaking – this class is more and more in need of an overhaul when I compare to the battle-potential of most all other classes.
I don’t think too much needs to be done with the class overall. Imho Anet put too much power in the ranger pets and balanced them around 30 points in BM.
long bow has no reason for such a slow number 1 ability imo that is what kills the longbow.
This is part of the reason, also why the hell does the longbow have the same range as the shortbow until traited?
Hell even reducing the cooldown of Hunter’s Shot would be a good start if Anet wanted the longbow to feel more like a powerful support weapon.
If they increased the attack speed, the short bow would lose one of it’s perks. Upping the damage could be an alternative.
What gear are you using? I have a friend who uses Knights armor with berserker weapons, and he absolutely loves the damage his longbow does.
In almokittenll exotic berserk gear up to 80% bonus crit damage and roughly 2k power.
The damage is decent from the longbow however the short bow always outdoes it in dps even without calculating the bleed from crossfire or the poison from the volley :S. I ditched my old long bow for a shortbow since the dps difference was huge.
edit: Apparently almost and full when next to each other is worthy of the language filter
I love all the people in this thread telling the OP to take it off auto cast. I guess people like getting carpel tunnel.
Being able to dodge mid attack needs to be implemented.
In all honesty this weapon needs a buff. There is no reason why this weapon should do less damage than the short bow under every circumstance. The only good use for this weapon is WvW.
Doesn’t even need anything drastic either buff the damage on 1 or increase it’s attack speed.
Side note bird pets should sit on your shoulders when out of combat xD
It is also not an mmo thing it’s an form of rpg game. If the story line remains at the same difficulty throughout the entire game and the pc remains at the same power level for the entire game the game becomes boring really quickly. The story line needs to progress and the player needs to feel as if they are getting stronger for completing more difficult content.
The interesting thing is that GW1 did not have this. You capped out at level 20 and gear very early through the content, and played the rest of the PvE content capped. People still enjoyed it in the millions of players. So while I’d agree that it’s a common thing in RPGs, it isn’t ubiquitous or necessary.
However the content got harder and you felt better of beating it yes?
Also cheers for quoting me, I am really out of it this morning and you helped me find my typos :S.
It’s not progression.
Stop calling it that.
Levelling is progression, you gain new stuff, new skills.Endgame is endgame, you don’t move at all, it’s just a way to artificially make the content last longer.
The proper term is “content barricade”.Thanks.
No wanting the story to continue is wanting some form of progression it is not a content barricade. Why is it nobody has a problem with how grindy it is to get new skins for weapons but the second someone mentions slightly better loot they get flamed?
I have no problem with PvP progression at the moment, I really like how everyone has pretty much the same gear. In PvE it would be nice to have more story line that comes out with slightly better gear ( No this does not have to mean they are huge upgrades that cause vast power creep issues).

There is no opportunity for skilled players to stand out and above those that are not.
What? this makes no sense, if everyone has same level gear then the skilled players shine, as skill is all that matters.
Winning a fight because you out stat another player destroys the concept of skill based PVP, and in a PVE enviroment, out stating another player therefore doing more DPS in no way makes you a better player.
Making PvP only contain cosmetic upgrades is fine. In PvE it gets old fast when there is no sense of progression. I’m not talking about making it huge upgrades and stuff like in WoW but a sense of progression is needed to keep people interested, this isn’t a sandbox game.
One thing that has baffled me is the decision by Anet to put most of the rangers static damage on the pet. I am currently hitting for anywhere between 500-1.5k depending on buffs yet my pet is doing 1k all the way to 4k when I pop my dps cooldowns.
Now I wouldn’t have a problem with this if they didn’t die so often. I have it happen numerous times in instances when my pet feline is about to be downed and my heal is on cd so I swap to my wolf. Within 2-3 seconds my wolf is dead and I lose a massive chunk of my dps.
Anyway cam Anet just give pets reduced AoE damage taken or just lower the cd on pet swap?
(edited by Maeglin.7416)
They won’t put a level limit on WvWvW because Anet promised the player base that pvp was going to be a way to level up. The only way I could see them limiting the level on WvWvW is by adding exp gains to structured pvp.
That being said, they need to implement a way to kick afks and people who sit in town.
