The first two comments on this thread describe my every desire when it comes to the Charr lol. Lets highlight a bit more brutality and crudeness not softness! >:D

Why more people don't play Charr - The Simple Answer.

I really doubt that’s the main reason, I find Divinity’s Reach and Rata Sum unbelievably hard to explore, however the Black Cit is as clear to me as the back of my hand, only because my first 2 toons were Charr.

Imo the real reason is, as unpopular as it is, people just want to look pretty, 80% of the population are human female.

Also: Charr armor clips everywhere.

I agree with you. What I have noticed with GW2 is that its community is a lot……softer than most. The only thing keeping it from being outright feminine is the colors!

I have been in lots of online communities, and in fact when I first heard of GW2 I was positive that everyone was going to end up rolling Charr, because everyone I knew were part of the more brutal and hardcore communities.

Why did you roll a Charr?

I am a giant cat monster within an empire that takes no insults, realizes that the world is not fair, and refuses to surrender. They are just so epic in that sense, and I feel kind of down when my fellow GW2 players attempt to pacify the Charr in order to make them more mainstream and politically correct.

i wonder who is more dominate in sexual relation between the charrs…

It likely varies, since both genders are encouraged to be dominant in their public lives. Flame legion obviously the females are submissive within the relationship.

Either way I say it varies and likely admitting you are submissive would be a social taboo :P

Personally, I hate when topics like these come up because I feel like we are trying to push real life issues into a game, but anyways.

From what I can tell relationships between Charr are rarely taken seriously. Many of them seemed to be based entirely around the sexual intercourse while others are for the purpose of bearing children. That said it would seem likely that the Charr PEOPLE would not care about same sex couplings.

The Charr Empire likely discourages it. With the high death rates and the increasingly hostile world around them it would be unwise to allow such things to go rampant, so, I can imagine the government trying to encourage heterosexual couplings only.

I don’t know about others, but I play the Charr to be a giant bloodthirsty monster in an expansive industrialist empire.

I don’t associate those with feminine qualities, and I often get annoyed with female Charr npcs in-game as they attempt to use masculine voices

Luckily, being an engineer, my charr doesn’t have this issue.
(Because he will never, ever stop wearing that awesome monocle.)

Quick, make a Sophisticated (Charr) meme around this!

seriously, do it, such great potential!

Why can't Dervishes exist?

The Charr are not atheistic as a whole, they are mainly Mal-Theistic, in which they believe in Gods, but they hate them.

The Human Gods do allow others to worship them we can see that through GW1 lore, but they usually favor the humans for some reason or another, which has led to some bitterness by other species.

A Dervish is someone usually so in tune with their respective God that they become an avatar(embodiment) of this God. Considering that all the Gods have left it is kind of hard to become an embodiment of said God simply because its hard to gain a good enough understanding.

Too many corpses does not fertilize the ground it kills it. Just like too much of anything can kill you.

I don’t think they will put some happy go luck multi-national and multi-cultural civilization in Orr so early on. It is just a bit stupid so early on.

Possibly they will install fortresses to keep the undead populations under control(their were a lot of the buggers!)

I like what the one guy said about Palawa Joko it would certainly make things more interesting, lets bring back real villains not cosmic powers!

Also, why is the enemy always undead?

Either way I hope ArenaNet keeps the area interesting.

Will they ever bring Abbadon back?

So far almost every Guild Wars game(except prophecies apparently) has had something put into Guild Wars 2 as a tribute. All starting areas except Sylvari seem to have a statue of a hero from EOTN.

Thats probably what this is, but I see a lot of potential to bring Abbadon back.

Example, the collective power of his artifacts are used to resurrect him(although he is weaker)

As the OP said its just a bit weird saying a God can die.

Charr doesn’t need agriculture. Plenty of references to cow herds, and I imagine they also have sheep and other grazing animals. Animals can graze in a wasteland like Ascalon as even under the worst circumstances, some plants adapt and start growing there. This means the production is localized instead of distant.

But they can’t match the same food surplus as the one generated by agriculture. That’s the point. Agriculture is just much more efficient and can supply far more food. Finally, if they want to truly grow and advance, they will need agriculture to produce food for their cattle at industrial scale. The more urbanized and industrialized the Charr become, the more vulnerable they will be to starvation unless they change their current model. Herding is just not good enough. In fact, in the Real World, there was a real fear that the Industrial Revolution would create massive famines before artificial fertilizers and mechanized agriculture were invented.

That’s probably the biggest thing holding back the Charr; lack of a food surplus. Charr are obligate carnivores, although I expect that they can still eat small amounts of plant matter without gaining any benefit from it apart from taste. (They do seem to favour a lot of spices in their dishes, for one thing.) They may be able to store meat using magic to power refridgeration devices, although I’ve never seen any evidence of long-term food storage in any Charr areas. This means that all Charr cities must have a ready supply of fresh meat available nearby, which drastically hampers expansion.

From what I’ve seen, Charr secure their food primarily through ranching and fishing, and supplemented by hunting. They probably maintain agricultural zones in order to grow feed for their herds; although it might be cheaper to simply buy feed from other races, the Charr probably do not like being dependent on another race to maintain their food security.

I could see that coming up in future game updates. Maybe the Charr empire attempting to expand towards the ocean? That is probably one of the only reliable sources of meat they can use, unless they start eating flame legion.

Before the Searing the Charr were little more than tribals kept under the tyrannical boot of the shaman caste. They did not really have any siege weaponry so they literally had to throw countless Charr at the wall until it fell, which did not work. After the Searing that did work because Ascalon was not able to repair the gates and such in time :P.

The Ebonhawke was made up of people raised in a state of war and were very elite, and again the Charr were under the boot of the Shaman caste.

The Charr advanced greatly in both technology and training after freeing themselves from their masters.

That said casualty rates amongst Charr are STILL ridiculous. The first event you do when you first make your Charr character, stuff like that occurs pretty regularly and a lot of Charr died in that one. Add in the Civil War they are fighting with the Flame Legion and the war with the Separatists and many other smaller wars they are fighting. Many Charr are dying, its really like most races where you have a few elites and the rest are mainly cannon fodder.

The Separatists, because I agree with them, having been a Prophecies player who probably spent more time pre-Searing than in the main game.

As a young boy, I spent much time in these lands! Ascalon forever!

Well I would have agreed with a surface look at the separatists, but if you really break down all they have done it reveals how weak they are.

The Separatists always go for the essential supply lines and yet never attack key defensive or offensive outposts of the Charr. They act more like bandits then a military group.

So, what if they are holding back? I thought. Well, if that is not likely the separatists are a very small group, Ebonhawke itself is not that large and the separatists were a minority of them. Sure many humans hate Charr but most of them are in Kryta and do little more than talk dirty about them while drinking.

Likely what we see of the Separatists is their actual full power, and that said they seem to be able to do little more than act as bandits using the occasional trebuchet(which is likely just left over siege weapons from decades ago as Trebuchets are pretty low technology in Ascalon)

That said part of me wishes that you could play as a Separatist, I played GW1 and it always sat badly with me abandoning Ascalon, especially since on your own you took out armies of Charr! Just imagine what you could have done if you stayed especially with Stormcaller at your service!

Although after seeing the full extent of the Charr species throughout the GW series Ascalon was doomed to lose. The Charr do not care for casualties and reproduce at ridiculous rates

Congrats! You just killed your gramps

The ending of your character is whatever you chose it to be.

For my Warrior, he stayed in Ascalon but helped Rurik and the others get out. He was far away when the Foefire went off and so did not become a ghost but wandered for years surviving the Charr hunters after him until he joined the Ebonguard after finding them

For my Necromancer who completed both Prophecies and then Nightfall. After the Prophecies story ended he hunted the remaining titans and helped set the stage for the revolution in Kryta, but did not participate in the actual thing. He assisted in Nightfall using his research into the undead to create long-lasting servants who helped act as armies within their own right. After that affair was over he used his new riches to retire as a noble in Kryta experimenting with his powers and learning more about death.

Now in Guildwars2 I have a female necromancer who is part of his bloodline although the only one in her family since the son of my GW1 character to be able to use magic. She is trying to discover her ancestors many secrets which he hid across the world(experimenting on many races and lands) and seeks to reclaim their family’s lost glory and respect.

I believe Charr would have lost a lot of prime agricultural land to the Brand as well, further diminishing their numbers and thinning those who are left. Their remaining supply lines through Diessa and Plains of Ashford would also be beset by Flame Legion attacks. Whereas, as you say, DR has a huge area of fertile land around them.

I contrast to Humanity’s population swelling programs, I would not be surprised if the Charr are implementing population control. Indeed, the clincher for the pact may indeed be logistical, since with them only having an Asura gate to LA, this would likely be their key to trade and transportation of goods. No matter how friendly they may be with the humans right now, there is no Asura gate directly between Black Citadel and human held lands.

As for the Asura, they may be somewhat dependant on the Sylvari for their agriculture at this point. Previously, they would probably have simply dominated Caledon Forest but the Sylvari now stand in opposition. Still, we are not really sure what their dietary requirements are. Maybe they eat Golems, who knows?!

That leaves the Norn. I do not know much about nutrition, but I can hardly believe that their diet is completely carnivorous. Yet they come from an icy area, and apparently came from somewhere even colder. I would think that Norn would breed at a relatively low rate (as is usual with larger creatures anyway) but be particularly long-lived. Maybe 3 or more times longer than humans.

Do we even know what lies above the Hirathi Hinterlands, btw? I am not a GW1 veteran so I don’t know a lot about that era.

I don’t know with the amount of enemies the Char posses I don’t believe they can afford to have population control, surely their casualty rates are high enough where that can not be trifled with! They also appear to keep farms close to their larger population areas as well as their agricultural land. Their is both a fishery and a farm right outside the Black Citadel as well as a Devourer farm.

Transporting that food likely can be an issue, although the Charr seem to have found many…..interesting ways to cover land. Also unless the Charr are completely devastated by the war with the dragons it would be reasonable to assume that they would continue to expand their empire, they simply need too in order to meet the needs of their civilization and that said I doubt they are too disturbed by the thought of eating human.

On the Norn I believe they would have a high reproduction rate at least for a species so similar to humans. Mainly because the sheer danger that lives within their environment and the (probable) low survival rate of children in such an environment, so, I imagine they keep themselves busy.

Charr, they actually breed at incredible rates, but because they have so many enemies the population is kept balanced. A civilization can not exist in a state of eternal war and civil war and have a normal birth rate.

Also look at GuildWars 1 unbelievable amounts of Charr are killed in Prophecies alone, but still in the last game they were beyond counting in their numbers.

I agree with OP Flame Legion I see as most dangerous and also most enticing.

They represent the most basic and destructive nature within the Charr(and also Humans but Arenanet would never get caught admitting this)

Destructive determination, ambition, ruthlessness, etc. The Flame Legion is as ruthless and determined as the mindless servants of the Dragons, following their own nature. I don’t think anyone in the Flame Legion is really aware of how destructive they are or they would care if they were aware, they are completely stuck within their own reality and desires.

Flame Legion is a dying art

Maloy.1249

I think this is an excellent question!

Anyways, The Charr are a naturally stubborn race, just look at the war between them and Ascalon. During the First Guild Wars your character alone destroys hundreds and before the Searing you watch them get slaughtered in masses daily at the Wall.

After the Searing the Charr keep going after the Humans even though the majority of Ascalon belongs to them and even when the humans are dead and are now immortal ghosts bent on killing them, again the Charr keep coming.

The Charr are stubborn they will die before they will bend.

That said I think every single Legion and its values reflect a specific part of the Charr species Internal Nature.

Iron- Industrialness, innovation, etc etc.

Blood-Brutality, straightforwardness, aggressiveness, pride, etc

Ash-Cleverness(they’re cats what do you expect?), subtlety(a trait they did not show well during the war against Ascalon), subterfuge, deceit, etc

Flame-Destructiveness, Ruthlessness, Ambition, etc etc.

Flame Legion rebellions are natural because Flame Legion IS ambition, most Charr you talk to who have joined seem to have done it for selfish reasons entirely. The Flame Legion is the ultimate representation of all the evil within the Charr as a species and will continue to exist as long as the species does, that said the fact that the Charr has ostracized and fights this nature is a good sign for them.

Also we can see evidence of this destructiveness in the Ascalonian environment. Typically where the Charr settle nature is thrown aside, Now I am all for industrial revolutions and understand nature needs to be pushed aside sometimes, but ArenaNet intentionally made it obvious how bad of an effect the Charr have on the environment, and I believe this is to help display the inner nature of the Charr.

Even if I am wrong(certainly possible) the Flame Legion won’t die, not unless mass genocide is committed upon every single one of them because thats what it would haven taken for the Ascalonians to defeat the Charr.

Theory on Human Gods & Elder Dragons

Maloy.1249

Well, lets step back and look at this from an even more distanced stand point.

Were the dragons woken up? or did they wake up on schedule?

The world of Tyria seems to go through cycles of destruction and birth, I believe this is hinted at during Prophecies, but anyways.

What if the dissapearance of the Gods who bring growth and new life into the world is followed by Destruction brought by the Dragons?

More and more species are dissapearing from Tyria all the time as this period of Godlessness goes on and now the Dragons have come only escalating the speed of this death.

2 theories on the sylvari

in Lore

Posted by: Maloy.1249

Maloy.1249

Perhaps the tree created the Sylvari once it recognized the threat, not for its own sake but the worlds.

Both the Sylvari and the Pale Tree(as far as we can tell) display traits of nobility, sacrifice, and love. Because of this I would take the leap of saying that the Pale Trees reasons are not entirely selfish.

I don’t think we should look at the Pale Tree as we would an organism in real life, in this world animals frequently display very selfless traits(the Norn spirit animals can serve as an example)

Why are dragons evil?

in Lore

Maloy.1249

When running around the Norn Starting Region you will meet a Son of Svian(or whatever they are called) anyways when you ask him why he is evil he responds that good and evil are merely illusions.

He says the Dragon is the ultimate predator and that is all they are, predators.

So to sum things up the Dragons are simply doing what they do because it is in their nature.
