Thank you very much!! I’ve been running lightning hammer so far to level (haven’t done too much PvP just yet) since LH knocks the crap out of stuff. I have (maybe) a dumb question…I know how to do the rotation and stuff, but my issue is understanding how you get that rotation. Or better yet, you mentioned the PvP example where you may need to adjust based on the fight….Is there a guide or anything anywhere that explains how to chain certain skills together and combo fields? I could just follow the rotation, but I wouldn’t really be learning anything because I’d be just pressing buttons…
Are there any “set” combo field rotations?
Yep, I’m talking about s/tPvP. I will be solo queuing for PvP when I’m not grouping with friends, but not worried about dueling…
Which would you recommend for leveling? I wasn’t sure if same weapons/build applied with that also…

Okay, great it must be just me then. Is there a certain build and weapons that you recommend I use for leveling and PvP?
I currently main an ele, but haven’t been playing it very long. I often sPvP, but also want to PvE level so that I can fully grasp the class. I do pretty good when leveling, and while I know it’s different, I get downed super quick in PvP. I’m having trouble grasping the combo fields, finishers and such. I’ve also been told (not to start another debate) that Ele’s aren’t viable for tPvP teams (my ultimate goal). If Ele isn’t the best option, I was debating on Mesmer, Engineer, or Thief. Let me know what you guys think…
LH build is for S/D, not D/D
Okay, thanks. I’ve been trying out staff, s/d, and d/d and wasn’t sure which to use. Do you know an “optimal” rotation for d/d? I know he posted the d/f on the first page, but nothing on d/d.
I see that D/F seems to be good for fractals and such, but which weapon/build would you recommend for leveling? I do some solo leveling, but I mostly group with friends whether exploring or once we get higher we will be running dungeons mostly.
Could you tell me if this build is still good for leveling? I’ve recently gotten back into GW2 and I’m leveling an elementalist. Most of the time I’m leveling with friends (usually at least 3 of us in a group at a time) and I’m trying to find a good build. I’m not sure if I should be using staff or S/D. I’ve been using S/D for the most part, but I keep a staff on me just in case. If this build is still good to use, which traits./skills do you recommend I take?
I logged onto my account and I have a level 14 necro, and 11 mesmer. Those are the 2 I want to choose between. Any pros/cons of one over the other?
Okay, I’ll give the necro a shot then. I prefer a rangy playstyle if possible, and it’s been so long I don’t remember the styles of each profession, so dunno if necro would be best or not…
Okay cool. Which of the 3 classes that I mentioned would you recommend? And does the realm that you’re on matter at all? It shows my home as Sorrow’s Furnace.
What profession you play? And how long you been playing (just curious)? I didn’t play too long so I’d prefer to play with someone who has been playing a while and don’t mind giving tips and such. I’m not a noob to MMO’s or anything, but didn’t play much of GW2 the first time around.
I played GW2 for a bit a while back and I’ve been looking for a game to play, so I’m giving GW2 another shot. I’m going to start fresh with either Mesmer, Elementalist, or Necromancer, and I’m wanting to find someone to level with if anyone’s interested. I haven’t made the toon or anything yet, so depending on your profession, I’ll roll whatever compliments best..I’ll be checking back here often so just reply here…
I started an elementalist today. I only got a couple of levels. Right now I got the s/d that were given in the beginning. I wasn’t sure if I needed to buy some gear from Trading Post or use the quest gear or drops. Also, I wasn’t sure of stat priority that I needed on my gear.
What type of playstyle is ele in sPvP/tPvP that works good? What type of build do you run? I know you said you do more support, so wasn’t sure. I generally like the “caster” classes in other MMO’s. I know GW2 is different, I picked the professions that I thought could be considered casters. Mesmer, ele, necro and possibly engineer with the grenade/elixir throwing, flamethrower, etc. Mesmer was more of a rinse/repeat rotation it felt like to me, and by your description necro is like that in sPvP. I saw an engineer’s stream named Ostrich Eggs the other day and he was throwing a kitten ton of grenades and looked pretty fun, although he was doing it in WvW. I know ele’s don’t have different weapons, but instead have the attunements, so I wasn’t sure if that would be a different type of challenge to manage than weapon sets.
Yeah I know patches change things a ton. I watched the cup finals on twitch the other day and the 2 final teams were both running a necro and neither were running an ele or engineer. I don’t know the team synergy and that stuff yet, so I wasn’t sure if it was just because of the other classes they had, or if it was because engi/ele are on the bottom end of the totem pole and nobody wants them. I’m mostly going to do sPvP and tPVP, and of course level up. I like the jumping puzzles, vistas, etc so of course I’ll be doing that, but probably won’t do much dungeons and things like that. With what you said about all 3, it’s a tough decision. Which class would you recommend? By your details, I assumed that you mainly play necro. I played WoW for a while and mainly played a Warlock/Shadow Priest, so necro might be a good idea, although I do like throwing stuff like the grenades. I may wait a while before I do an ele and play it as an alt. So it’s between necro and engi.
Thanks for the feedback. So just a few questions/clarifications..
Ele – So being support over dps will benefit more since it helps the team?
Engineer – It might not be the bunker spec, but I think I would want a spec that uses the grenades a lot. From what I’ve watched of engineer, I like the grenades.
Necro – What’s that S/D + Staff playstyle like for the necro. I don’t HAVE to be a bunker build, I just don’t always want to be running back and forth like I’ve seen mesmers do on stream. If that is a better playstyle though overall and would give me better success, then I can get used to it. Whatever playstyle would carry me the farthest, I’m down for.
After these questions, which of the 3 would you recommend for me? Or are there other questions that I should answer before recommending?
I’m trying to decide between elementalist, necromancer, or engineer. Mesmer was my first choice, but it seemed too much of a “rinse and repeat” type flow. I will do some PvE along the way as well, but will mainly be for sPvP. After watching some twitch streamers, I think I want to be more of the bunker type build for whichever class has that option. I also want a class with a higher skill cap. I don’t want a class that you can faceroll master, because I would just get bored of it. If you recommend any of those 3, let me know why you recommend that also. Pros and cons of the choices will help me decide. Thanks in advance to anyone that comments.
I’ve seen alot of people say mesmer is boring on forums, so I think it’s between ele and engi. Any more feedback on those 2 PvE and PvP?
WvW would probably be the thing I’ll do the least amount of. I will do a ton more of PvP and PvE than WvW. So Mesmer, but they can be boring. I like the idea of higher skill floor for ele since that would keep me from getting bored. Any certain build? Or would maybe even a ranger work better than the professions I mentioned. I would consider going ranger if it was worth it.
I’m starting GW2 and going duo with someone and they’re rolling thief. Is there a “best” choice out of mesmer, elementalist, necromancer, or engineer that would go good with the thief? Will be leveling, exploring, PvE, PvP, etc.
Unhygienix – that works awesome since I go to school and work full time also. So I probably don’t play as much as others also. I’m in central time zone, and I rolled an asura elementalist, but I’ve only done the first intro quest. I’m standing in Metrica, but haven’t done anything else.
Baz – Just messaged you in game, but shows that you’re in WvW, so you might be busy.
Anyone else interested in leveling together? I rolled an ele but only got him to level 2 waiting on kushed, but haven’t seen him on. If anyone else is looking for a partner, just let me know.

I started an Asura Elementalist, and completed that first main quest to get started in the game. Once you get started, I can travel to meet you if needed.
Not sure which time zone you meant. I live in CST and I have a Dr’s appt at 3:30, so not sure exactly what time I’ll be back, but shouldn’t be too long. I’ll start then once I get back. Let me know here if you decide to go w/ something other than warrior
Then I’ll rule the necro out, because I definitely want a challenge with the class. It keeps me from getting bored. What makes the ele such of a more difficult class to learn?

If you were picking from those 3 that I listed, which would you personally pick and why? From your your post, I was thinking mesmer, but wanted to make sure.
I’ve had GW2 for a while, but never played much until now for various personal reasons. But I’m ready to go, and I plan on leveling with a warrior. I’ve narrowed my class choice down to elementalist, mesmer, & necromancer.
Any advice on which class? If so, what’s the reason behind that choice? Just want to make sure I get a good understanding of the class synergy and the pro’s/con’s of the duo, strategy, etc. Thanks in advance for anyone who assists.

Since I’m returning, I’d like to start fresh. I’m not sure which profession to play out of the ones I listed in main post. I’m mainly wanting to play sPvP, since I figure a lot of them are the same for PvE and exploration.
I am pretty new to GW2 and am looking for a leveling partner to PvE and PvP with. I am on the Sorrow’s Furnace server, and I’m not too picky on class choice (mes, ele, necro, engi, or ranger). Been watching a ton of twitch players and youtube videos, and I’m going with ele or engi for sPvP. I’ll probably use necro for PvE, but I’ve seen a ton of teams looking for engi’s and ele’s for tPvP teams.

I’ve decided to go Necromancer, but I’m not sure which build I should go for PvE and which for PvP.
So with ele, only the bunker build will work for tPvP? And out of necro or ele, which is preferred on a tPvP team? Or does it depend on what professions the team already has?
Thanks Behemoth for the reply. That’s a clear breakdown of each, and I really appreciate it. In a tournament PvP setting (my ultimate goal), which would be more “sought after”. PvP is my main goal, but I know jumping in to PvP from the start you have a huge learning curve. That’s the main reason I’m leveling along the way so that I learn each skill and the uses of it to make me better at the class itself instead of random button mashing. Skill cap doesn’t matter to me at all. I like a class that’s tougher to play, gives me a challenge. I do like a class with varying play styles though to keep it interesting. That way if I get bored of doing alot of damage and want to support, or if a team needs a support role filled, I can switch to that.
I’ve been leaning more towards mesmer or ele. I like the illusions playstyle of mesmer, but I also like the attunements that ele brings to switch up the skills. I’ve seen that a lot of people run the ele bunker build, but how are they with a damage build in spvp? I’m wondering if the illusion/shatter playstyle would get very repetitive after a while and become boring for me.
I’m new to GW2 and I’m trying to decide which of these 3 professions that I want to play. I’m mainly playing for sPvP, and some PvE, but not too much. I’ve tried the whole concept “play the class you’re good at” or “play the class that you think is fun” but it’s not working. I like all 3 of the playstyles, and the lack of survival is on all 3 so I think that’s more of me just getting used to the playstyle of the class. I don’t want to bounce around between classes. Which one of these classes will do me well in PvP, but also be able to hold its own leveling and in PvE. I’ll be leveling with a mesmer friend more than likely, if that changes anything.
1-10 on the naga are my action abilities with the attunement swapping to be q,e,r,f. That way I don’t even have to mess with the F buttons.
I think I’m leaning towards Mesmer or Elementalist, but up in the air between those 2. Which of the 2 are teams always looking for a “good” of? (Like Teams want a good mesmer or teams need a good ele) I know Ele’s seem to be harder to play from what I’ve read, but are they harder to come by when forming teams, so teams end up making do with other classes?
I just got GW2 and have decided to play a Mesmer (mostly PvP if that has any affect on the answer to my question), but I am trying to decide which crafting skills would work “best” for me. This is my main of course so I want something I can use, but that can also bring in cash. I was thinking about Jeweler and Tailor, but wasn’t positive. Anyone have recommendation?
One last question that I just thought about….Any crafting recommendations for Mesmer? I was thinking tailoring and jeweler, but not sure if that’s best or not…
