So I just went through most of HoT’s story as a berserker, but I wonder: Is it generally considered wiser getting a different set of stats with some of the enemies hitting way harder now? Stuff such as Knight’s or Soldier’s and whatnot, or are most guardians still rocking their berserker stats, just sort of curious about the general consensus now that HoT has been out for a bit.

I wouldnt necessarily say trinity back, but more diversity, definitely.
expecting an attempt at balance in this game seems moot judging from the responses, but nice suggestions Niteviper. Maybe one day they’ll realise, until that time I think I’ll stick to my personal story and world pvp.
I agree. That is what I currently fear, and as silly as it sounds, it surpresses my hype a bit since I still find this a glaring issue in the current game. This issue isn’t just limited to speed runs, from what I heard. with that said, I haven’t tried for a good while either, so things may have changed.
I love getting more options, but my biggest issue with hearing about those new things, how much use/effectiveness will they have with this berserker meta/mentality? what if those weapon options end up being less desirable in dungeons because this and that weapon is ultimately the best? Is Arenanet planning to look into this, or are they launching all these new things without any considerable changes to what we already have?
That is my only serious concern about this expansion, loving the idea of a new area and the way the storyline is going otherwise! Not trying to dig at the game, it is just that I didn’t hear anything about that during the announcement and presentation.
Agreed with Arken… weapons really need work.
I agree CMF, when I was doing some dps testing the hammer comes out quite well since it gets sustained dps over time rather than burst. However, as several folks already pointed out that lightfield is a real dealbreaker, which is a shame because otherwise it is a weapon that offers so much control otherwise (whether you need that control can be debated and argued about since as you said blinds and other things can be better).
Part of me really hopes arenanet realises some of the faults in weapons (doesnt only go for Guardian from what I have experienced), but something tells me they feel it is “fine” , real shame.
When I first rolled a guardian I thought it would be something like a knight similar to a paladin in the sense that it uses some form of magic, giving not only himself but others boons as well. I got the nagging feeling a lot of this potential is wasted PvE-wise by the time I will hit 80, but I could be wrong. I can’t really give any other input other then that I agree with your post, I feel it nails one of the problems the class has.
I was first very surprised with the guardian, loads of cool weapons and abilities, only to find out that there is a lot of pigeonholing going on in PvE, I got this feeling that guardians are not the only profession subjected to this.
yeah I’ll just bring most weaps along, can always change if it goes south :-)
Thank you for the response again Oxtred and the other posters. I think I made up my mind and will stick with the greatsword for now in PvE for sure, hammer is very tempting for other situations though, but the lightfield is apparently a killer, which I can understand! I gotta say again I find it a real shame ,as thematically a hammer just feels more “guardian”-ey than a sword, but it is how it is in the end.
Permanent protection from hammer is not only good for fractals you know. Even not for the protection, with right traits hammer/greatsword does more damage than sword + focus/greatsword combo. Aside from the superior damage to sword + focus, hammer has the cooldown blast finishers in the game aside from thief and has both soft and hard CC built in. As for the permanent light field “getting in the way” of fire fields, those who might stack from fire fields almost always does it before combat and they should. Aside from smoke and fire fields which are used out of combat for valid reasons, there aren’t much better fields than light field aside from water fields which are extremely rare and situational.
To sum up, don’t choose between hammer and greatsword as they make a very good combo. Instead, choose hammer to sword + focus, as aside from blinds and optional and long cooldowned Shield of Wrath, there isn’t much sword + focus can offer comparing to hammer.
Interesting, I was considering that yesterday. How do you use the two in combination?
Thank you for the elaborate info on the hammer and enlightening me on the role situation for dungeons. Think I may stick with Greatsword for pve dungeoning along with a sword/focus setup (or maybe a scepter would be better if range is favored?). Not really sure yet what to pick for WvW but I guess without trait costs that isnt a big deal anymore.
Thank you for the responses so far, I think I will just have to face the music and go with a greatsword, although knowing me I’ll mess around with one handed sword as well for a bit. What type of spells are recommended to take along, I take consecrations are fairly good to accompany with these kinds of builds rather than shouts? (even though stand your ground is always handy I suppose)
I must confess I have been away from GW2 a long while, but are just the guardians pushed into berserker, or is this a problem with all the classes in the game currently? Starting to wonder if I picked the wrong class again (first time I was a necro)

I have been really liking the guardian, but I haven’t really liked the weapon options so far. I have been reading a lot of threads about weapons, but I still seem to feel unclear on the consensus of how all the weapons perform in pve.
Originally I was going to run with a mace and shield build, but I feel I am handicapping myself with a shield in pve content (it can be handy in pvp and I am sure it has some situational uses though), so I thought the next closest option would be to go for a two hander, so I boiled my primary weapon choices down to hammer or greatsword.
What is the general consensus for level 80 dungeoning and pve? what is the most effective weapon? I gathered that the hammer is about aoe and control, and greatsword more about burst damage. If I want to focus on Hammer, what trait lines are recommended in general? I know greatswords greatly prefer Zeal but I find many other traits other than the vulnerability 3 point talent very underwhelming.

Thanks for the feedback both of you, was always wondering. I am not too fond of the explosives tree, mainly took it for that burn chance and the condition duration, I think I may stick the remaining points in alchemy to get the elixir might trait, I’ll do some research on it.
having recently started dabbling into the engineer (and enjoying it) I felt the flamethrower is more for “up-close combat” but the elixir gun has the bleed that can stack at a safe distance. is it a good idea/viable to use both a flamethrower and an elixir gun or is there a better alternative to build up bleed stacks?
There is a build I’m working on currently that works both into the mix.
And considering that with Kit Refinement, the swap to FT kit and EG kit both remove a condition, makes it even more viable.
Ahh thanks :-) I was thinking about this build myself, but I am not sure if the points in explosives might be overkill or not and those points are better spent elsewhere? not entirely sure how much duration is needed in condition based builds. thanks in advance for the feedback.

EDIT: just ignore my weapon choices and other things, only went into the traits for now :-) my bad

no, I didnt log in during christmas much at all, I had the problem way before that. I do agree it was horrible during christmas, but that wasn’t what I meant. :-) I had many issues with fps before, it seems to be pretty stable now, granted, I still think it could be better, but it is a huge improvement, hopefully it’ll get fixed for other folks

Just wanted to give some positive feedback, for a long time I had a real struggle with Guildwars 2 performance, but somehow it has been fixed with last patch for me, I know other people who now struggle with it though, but I hope it is fixed for them swiftly too. any other people that suddenly had a fps increase? am using the Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7970 (if any of that feedback helps)
The warrior is incredibly dull to play IMO. It does a ton of damage but the class is incredibly straight forward with no “fun” mechanics. In PvE their damage is pretty much unrivaled but they do lack some real group utility.
The mesmer has fun mechanics and depth, but they are kinda squishy. As far as PvE the mesmer has tons of group utility. Portals to get by jumping puzzles some might be bad at. Time Warp for a huge DPS boost, group stealth to bypass some enemies, and reflect for projectiles(can do massive damage on some mobs/bosses like the dredge suit fractal boss).
After giving the Mesmer a shot I do have to admit I am enjoying the mesmer more. Warrior feels visceral but also very straightforward, I may level one as an alt someday. thanks for all the responses :-)
yeah, am not necessarily aiming for a specific weapon currently, as long as there’s some viable options :-)
I haven’t played GW2 for a while, but I am looking to get back into it. I used to play a thief and a necromancer, both have not been satisfactory. The thief on one hand felt extremely squishy for a melee-ish option (perhaps they changed it, didnt really get the impression when I tried him again. I do get that the thief benefits from staying on the move and stealth, I just don’t feel the thief. The necromancer I leveled all the way up to 80, only to find out it never really feels right, the damage felt overly dependant on conditions and the aesthetics didn’t attract me at all.
So now I am looking to get back into the game, and have been pondering on leveling a warrior or mesmer (to begin with, alts are always for a later moment), what are the pros and cons of each of these classes? I do enjoy the warrior, my main fear with the warrior is that it is an overpopulated class, is this still the case? My mesmer on the other hand, seems to be a big surprise, very strange at first, but I like the flashiness, my only worry is its PvE “worth” as that is what I mostly want to go for. My other worry is that it will have the same flaws as the necromancer for me since I am less used to casters.
I am wondering if people could give an honest view between the classes. Am posting it in the general discussion rather than the class forums to avoid any sense of extreme bias, but I understand one can’t fully get rid of that, just give an honest opinion :-)
With kind regards,
Moski
agreed with the OP, I loved my personal story, literally up to the moment where Sieran died and Trahearne pushed me out of the spotlight like he is one of the Hodgetwins “get the f—- outta the waaay!” . I too would not have minded if Destiny’s Edge would have been the center of attention, hell, I had the feeling it was setting up for that after I arrived in Lion’s Arch with the storyquest. Then all of a sudden this dude comes in and starts commanding me around.
I lost all connection to my character and became Trahearne’s lapdog, while the first parts of the story set me up as Zojja’s lapdog, no, she even treated me with more respect than he did (go figure). I would have been fine with that, instead I am serving this narcissistic prick.
I tried to reroll a while ago, while the thief felt faster and more visceral in combat, I also felt it was much more squishy and punished you way more for making mistakes. It was just not the class for me, even if I did want to play one in Betaweekend 2 and 3. With my necromancer I can AOE the crap out of multiple enemies without effort and spread death and decay, at least, during the solo questing. I do realise the necromancer has issues in pvp, but give it time. My primary concern is the lack in variety possibilities for builds such as power damage or minion master (bugged AI). Another concern is also trying to destroy objects is a huge pain, but from what I hear most condition build classes are suffering from this.
All in all, I am going to stick with it and not give up, as much as I am aware of quite some issues. I am running a 20/30/0/20/0 build currently, I was hesitant to put points into spite, but some bonus damage as well as longer condition duration helps. As for pvp, I honestly havent figured out a decent build yet, I think I may wait with that!
