Again: you don’t want to understand (denial) or you can’t understand.

I hadn’t considered denial. That certainly explains his strident objections.

When you can’t attack the argument, attack the person delivering the argument. Once again, that holds true I see.

I have not only attacked your arguments but demolished them. Yes, I did take a personal swipe at you, but to pretend I haven’t otherwise addressed your arguments is intellectually dishonest.

Vertical implies a power progression, it’s that simple.

Having to grind out upgraded gear to take on new game content is vertical progression. It’s that simple.

there’s no indications they’ll keep pushing further and further tiers out there to keep you chasing the unobtainable.

This is, in fact, exactly what they’ll be doing.

“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.

“As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

You’re reading this wrong. This is exactly the opposite of what you claim. This is horizontal progression, not vertical. More infusions and ascended items is expanding the tier horizontally, not pushing a vertical treadmill. I stand by my statement and use your quote as evidence… there’s no indication that they’ll keep pushing out new tiers of gear and having you perpetually chase the uncatchable.

I am not reading it wrong. They explicitly state that the current Ascended gear and infusions are only “the first level” (read tier) and that they plan to “build upon these levels of Item progression in future content”.

The only way that could be any more clear is if they outright admitted that they’re adding an endless gear-grind and vertical progression to the game. That they’re doing this after selling the game on the promise that the end-game would be based around horizontal progression is a slap in the face to their customers.

How can this be so difficult to grasp? FotM has the first tier of infusions, those that combat agony. The next dungeon will have the next set that combats a different condition. This is a perfect setup for horizontal progression.

I’m going to assume you have no idea what “horizontal progression” means, because what you just described — having to continually upgrade your gear in order to take on new content — is the exact opposite of horizontal progression.

I also think it’s ironic that you earlier said that “there’s no indications they’ll keep pushing further and further tiers out there to keep you chasing the unobtainable”, and now you’re arguing they’re going to do exactly that.

Ay carumba. Having the option to change infusions or to pursue a new set of ascended gear for a new dungeon is not vertical progression. It’s lateral. You’re not becoming more powerful, just changing to equally powerful gear specialized for a task. You’ll have agony gear, and maybe you choose to have a gear set for the next dungeon as well. If you wear either set into, say, Arah you’ll be equally powerful there.

And how is any of that unobtainable? You’re not making sense. Right now, you gather agony gear to allow you to go deeper into Fractals if you wish. Later you gather… vampiric… (making that up for conversations sake) gear to allow you to delve deeper into that dungeon. Later still, a new infusion, new set of gear if you wish. Maybe you only want one set and choose to change slotted infusions instead. Your choice. Power curve is flat. Progression is lateral.

Yeah, what you’re describing is not horizontal progression. You’ll have to constantly jump on the treadmill and grind out a new set of gear and/or upgrades in order to take on new game content. Sorry, champ, but that’s a textbook example of vertical progression.

My god people.. they added one tier of gear as a one-time gameplay improvement, why the kitten is everyone acting like this is the apocolypse?

It may be one gear now, but when all the QQers get those Ascended, they will complain more. What will Anet do then? Add another tier of item. This is how gear-treadmill happens. kitten like this happened alot of time on others mmo, and Im afraid it will happen on GW2 as well.

So you guys think it’s a good idea to make >huge< assumptions and complain non-stop about something that has not yet happened and may never happen? How is this helping anyone? How is this beneficial?

It’s not assumptions. ArenaNet explicitly stated that the current Ascended gear and infusions are only “the first level” (read tier) and that they plan to “build upon these levels of Item progression in future content”.

99% of the game is the same to how it was 1 week ago.

1% of the game has now caused upset.

It literally makes no sense. You can choose not to get the new gear, or wait until it is available via different means. Everyone has chosen to spam the forums instead.

Good work guys.

It’s because that 1% represents a dramatic shift in design philosophy that flatly contradicts the manifesto that ArenaNet loudly trumpeted when marketing this game. There’s really no doubt that future content will feature similar gating through arbitrary gear checks that will take considerable time and effort to overcome, and many of us who bought Guild Wars 2 based on promises of casual-friendly grind-free gameplay are reasonably upset about it.

Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mountain Man.7901

It should be easy to obtain in the sense that you should acquire it as a natural part of progressing through the content. The whole premise of Guild Wars 2 is that you should be able to do whatever you want and still progress at a reasonable rate without having to grind out the same content over and over for hours on end in order to acquire a piece of necessary equipment.

Impact to casual play and long term play.

Can someone tell me what they added to the game to make it a gear grind? I dont visit the forums much and just play with some friends for fun. If I need to be grinding gear again Id rather quit playing now. I hate the gear grind, and equipment score BS. Please point me to the release notes or something on what changed…

Read this:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

Short version is that there is a new tier of more powerful equipment that will be required to tackle new end-game content, and acquiring that gear requires fairly significant time and effort.

There isn’t any YET. New content will require you to be geared in agony resistance to do it.

So you’re concerned about something that hasn’t happened, that hasn’t been announced and is clearly not going to happen?

Sigh.

When the new gear was announced, it was said that there would be a point beyond which you won’t be able to advance without it.

for the new dungeon right? if you want to do the new dungeon you can.

Not just new dungeons. Future content as well:

This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.

As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

Note that infusions aren’t simply to “give you an edge” but are required to complete the Fractal of the Mists dungeon. It’s rather obvious from that quote that the majority of future content will be locked behind gear-checks, which pretty much does away with ArenaNet’s promise of no-grind horizontal progression.

You have to be deliberately obtuse not to recognize this.

if you don’t find the fotm dungeon fun. don’t do it. the gear you get from it allows you to progress in it. it’s not required to have fun.

So you’re sticking with “deliberately obtuse”. Fair enough.

The more gear checks and gated content they introduce (and you’d have to be naive to think that FotM is the end of it), the less fun it will be for me. Already it’s not much fun to trigger a world event and have only a few other people show up, especially when there aren’t enough other players to actually beat the boss. That problem is only going to get worse if ArenaNet continues on this trajectory.

I found the game before ok and now i no longer find it ok nor fun.
If that is hard for some people to understand its their business and i shouldnt take up with their “pretend to be ignorant” talk, if thats not ok with u that core GW1 ppl no longer find GW2 fun then u can either leave or post more educated posts.

if it’s not fun then why play?

If enough people take your advice then that will be the end of this game. It is in ArenaNet’s best interest to keep the game fun for as many people as possible, especially those who bought it based on the promise that there would be no grind and that character progression would be horizontal.

I think most of you are underestimating what a tricky problem this is to deal with and the amount of time and resources it would take. A single employee combing through the hundreds of reports a day and personally verifying that each one is a legitimate bot report? Yeah, right.

All reports go into a database. Sort column by report type: Botting. Hide all other report type entries. Sort the now exclusively bot reports column by reported players name. Apply a count of those entries to find the person most reported for botting. This can all be automated in less than an inth of a second with the push of a button. Just push button and whoever the Punisher will be just has to look at the name that pops up, find them in game and watch them work. Apply banhammer as necessary.

This is how it could easily be done. However, I’m still of the mind to feed the botters enough rope to “sufficiently hang themselves” as another user put beautifully. We’re way past the point in time where we need babysitting GM’s invisibly guarding our game from evil doers.

You’re still downplaying how labor intensive and time consuming this process would be. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to manually process the hundreds or even thousands of bot reports pouring into ArenaNet every day.

Then they need to hire as many as it takes. It took all of 3 months for bots to destroy D3’s economy beyond repair. We are 5 weeks out now, how much longer do you want to wait to take action?

“Hire as many as it takes!”

That sure is easy to say when you’re not the one writing the paychecks. ArenaNet has limited resources and a hundred different things that need their attention, so I’m sure that they (and Blizzard, since you mentioned them) are devoting all the resources they can to tackle the botting problem. Which isn’t to say they’re devoting a lot of resources to it, just everything that it makes sense to from a business perspective.

There needs to be a standard distro, which means a standard codebase

Um, yeah, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Every single Linux distro in existence has the exact same code base. A program that can run on one Linux distro can run on any Linux distro. Literally.

And besides, professional developers have been supporting Linux for years, including major studios like id, Epic, BioWare (Neverwinter Nights), Croteam (Serious Sam games), and soon Valve, along with hundreds of independent shops. If Linux is really so hard to develop for then how do you suppose they’ve managed it? Voodoo magic?

“hardcore gamers” are the same people that buy a game on day 1…blast through it..then jump on the forums complaining that its rubbish and does not cater to them.

ow wait…

Or it’s the guy on the Diablo 3 forums with a full compliment of level 60 characters and hundreds of hours played complaining about how terrible the game is. If it’s so bad then why the hell did you play it for an average of 6-hours a day for the last 4-months?

As another very well known games developer said., Once the linux community decides on a standard distribution to focus on, then we will start developing games for it.

The problem with linux is that there are vast numbers of different distros in use. And it’s normally the people that know absolutely nothing about linux that are asking for games to be developed for that codebase.

Whoever made that crack about a “standard distribution” either doesn’t know anything about Linux or was just making a cheap excuse to not support the platform. If something can run on one Linux distro then it can run on any Linux distro. There are even a number of cross-platform installers to make a developer’s life easier.

So it looks like another silly rationalization goes right out the window.

in Players Helping Players

Mountain Man.7901

Mac users do not have a choice regarding their OS all they can do is have Windows emulated, Linux users however chose to use Linux and they can very well have a windows partition and be done with it.

So with that in mind I do not see why would a company waste resources in to making a client for a minority of players who deliberately chose to use a different OS.

Mac users can run Windows natively on their systems using Boot Camp, so that excuse doesn’t work.

As for “a minority of players”, you should check out the stats for the Humble Indie Bundles sometime where Linux purchases are at least equal to and often greater than Mac purchases ( http://www.humblebundle.com/ ), so there is clearly a large number of Linux gamers willing to support games developed natively for their platform of choice.

In short, none of your rationalizations hold water.

On a related note, Steam is coming to Linux in the near future with Valve planning to create native Linux versions of all of their games. That in and of itself shoots down any notion that Linux is not a viable platform for games.

Seems to me that games these days care too much about the casual player.

What, exactly, is a casual player? I’ve been playing video games for the better part of three-decades, and it’s by far my favorite hobby, so I would consider myself a “hardcore” gamer, but I really like the modern design philosophy where the goal is to entertain the player rather than beat him, so does that make me casual? For that matter, isn’t it a bit elitist to try and categorize gaming hobbyist as being on a lower tier than you simply because they don’t share your gaming preference?

Frankly, the whole notion of punishingly difficult game design is like putting mousetraps in a book to make it more “challenging” to read.

One thing I personally noticed, is that many players (mostly new players in low level areas) don’t try to help downed people get up before they die. Getting 1 or 2-shotted is fine, as long as someone helps you get up before you die for real.

The problem is that anybody trying to revive you is in considerable danger of receiving a one-shot kill themselves.
