Hey guys.

I know roles like tank/healer/dps is not prominent in GW2. However I want a class that is good at support in dungeons, using control, healing and utility. I really want to play mesmer so I was wondering how Mesmers do in dungeons – particularly when it comes to disables and mitigating damage through CC, buffing and debuffing. I want a more supportive role that focuses on keeping the team alive.

So when it comes to PVE – especially dungeons (ignoring PVP completely) Will the Mesmer hit jackpot on this desired playstyle or should I roll a Guardian or maybe Necromancer instead?

Another option is elementalist based on healing. I read early after launch that even though pure healing classes are abolished. Elementalists can still be built to heal really well?

Any advice is welcome.

One of the reasons I quit GW2 after lvl80 was the time consumption. As a student I dont have the selfdicipline needed to moderate my playtime, so I quit alltogether to prevent MMO-gaming to have a negative effect on my studies.

It struck me that WoW had parental controls to limit playtime and set up specific game times per day. Does GW2 have a similar feature that I can apply to myself to prevent me from playing too much?

What I wanted to do.

Farm the CoF gear finnished.
Complete map.
Do PvE.
Do PvP.
Max all crafting professions on one character.
Craft legendary weapon.
Farm full Arah gear.

That wouldve taken maybe 6 months of time, by then new content would probably be out. And I would most probably have played GW2 for years.

However. With 9/10 magg lava runs bugging out and the new nearly impossible gate encounter, the only way to effectively farm marks is now magg bomb runs.

I wanted to finnish the CoF set so I could move on. But now I cant move on because the number of runs have gone from maybe having 40 left (Which would still have taken days on days of constant farming) to having to do 250 Magg bomb runs.

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY.

At the same time, people are running around with full CoF gear – because ArenaNet decided to destroy the only good dungeon – stealthily with no warning. So who gets rewarded? The people that rushed to 80 fastest. Not only that, CoF2 was the only good dungeon in the game. Did it need to be harder? Sure. But now its nearly impossible. And what is really to blame? Money and experience rewards Im guessing. I mean why is that getting the focus? You can get money anywhere in the world, same with exp – in so many ways.

CoF marks? Only in CoF.

Farming the CoF gear finnished was for me building the foundation of my new house. Everything after – decorating it, getting a car and building a garden around it for a long and good life to live in.

The other players have built their houses and moved on (Finnishing their CoF sets)

Im left with a burnt down smoldering ruin. And by the time I would need to invest now to rebuild, finnishing the CoF set. The other players would have skyscrapers, mansions and villas.

Now THAT is an insult which is impossible to recover from. From 40 runs more which would still have taken a tonn of time, to 250. So there really is nothing left to do than quit. This one patch made the whole difference between playing the game for years – or quit alltogether. Ive played MMOs for 12 years and been in some serious friggin hardcore guilds, but this isnt about difficulty for me but time – being treated unfairly – and being stabbed in the back.

Really you did heart quests to 80? There are so many things wrong with just that 1 statement not sure where to start.

I did the same. And always wondered how people could get to 80 that fast. I never thought to even try dungeons because I assumed – naturally – that the exp wouldnt be any better.

Gear has little to nothing to say in GW2 though. lvl80 greens vs Exotics are only seperated by a small amount of stats. Upgrades for me are usually 1-5 in 3 stats making the overall difference maybe 100 for stats that are already in the thousand range.

Dungeons are fine, I support the buffs.

So CoF being incompletable because magg bugs 90% of the time and gate encounter has pretty much become impossible is a good change?

1) Im running a 10/0/30/30/0 shout warrior. It makes no difference. Glass cannon argument = fail.

2) You want people to do other dungeons than CoF? Personal subjective wish/opinion but no relevance to the issue at all.

3) Its not about any wow syndrome. Its about crappy AI, pathing and general design and untested buffs to encounters – making them impossible. Did you think Diablo 3 Inferno mode was good balance design – by making all mobs one-shot you?

When a well coordinated team of skilled players cant complete a dungeon because of bugs and untested buffs that make some encounters near impossible – then it IS bad design.

Do you have any real arguments to defend this tragedy?

So Maggs behavior isnt bugged but intended, and so is the gate event? (CoF)

@Stukov: Its not about money or experience in any way. Its about the dungeon not being completable anymore (Path 2 atleast)

If you read my post – this is about Magg not working AT ALL. He will bugg out almost every time. In addition to the gateroom now being completely impossible.

From 5/10 to 1/10.

CoF2 was the only light in the tunnel in the horrible dungeon design. 70+ times to do dungeons that are really long with crappy rewards. Then I find CoF2 – THE ONLY THING THEY DID RIGHT.

Then they extinguished that light.

From 5/10 to 1/10 and will probably quit. Another MMO company that doesent care about their playerbase, says they are listening… but meant “Bioware Mass effect 3” type listening.

Meaning “We know you were having fun, so we changed that. But please dont leave, this is ARTISTIC INTEGRITY” The only artistic thing about this whole thing is the web of lies they weaved for us. Truly a masterpiece of making people happy only to crush it all beneath their ironheel in one giant stomp.

I really dont feel anger as much as I feel sadness. Because I truly loved this game. 12 years of MMOs for me. With promises on promises on promises, and one failure after the other. Then GW2 comes along as the final beacon of light. And when it all looks like it cant fail, it does. Because games by gamers for gamers today, means games by liars for idiots. At the end of the day they decide to stealthnerf (Keeping us out of the loop) and make the only one good dungeon in the game as horrible as the rest, and blames the players for being bad instead of taking responsibility and admit they did a mistake.

Several runs today. All failures.

This is with competent people with decent gear, skill and a good head on their shoulders – that doesent give up easily and are good at coordination.

Magma run:

So here is a list over what Magg does (frequently).

1) He just randomly runs out in the lava and dies for no reason.
2) He comes across with us, but at the quest item decides to run back.
3) Mobs are cleared, and so is the path. But Magg decides to run across half the room to start fighting with some mob that hasnt even aggroed.
4) Magg freezes even if nearby mobs are dead, and he wont move. (Moving close to him has about a 33% chance of either nothing happening, he decides to follow again or runs into the lava to die)

These are in addition to:

1) Mobs that respawn constantly and aggros from far away.
2) Have way too high HP to chainkill before the respawn timer kicks in.

It is as if Magg was designed on purpose to suicide.

Gate event, made it there once due to magg bugging actually. Suddenly appearing before the Q item even as he was dead in lava.

1) Kiting is now out the window. Highest survival with pure stun/heal/kite – 70%
2) Even with popping all CDs and nuking the first smoke lord to shreds, adds will start pouring in before the remaining adds go down. At this point – there is no way at all to DPS down mobs faster than they spawn.
3) DPS + Kite tactic. We tried killing as much as we could, and when overwhelmed SWITCHED to kiting and chain reviving. It simply does not work.

We all know this. What Id like to see is an employee at ArenaNet saying this is “intended” and not a design failure. Atleast then I can quit knowing that it wont be fixed, so I am not sitting here with any false hope that ArenaNet will swallow their pride and admit they did a mistake and that it will be fixed.

No more farming CoF and Prices on dungeon gear.

Dungeons are dead until Anet realize they had it right with CoF and it was all the other dungeons they needed to get in line.

Pretty much this.

20 minutes runs was in no way fast as you needed – as OP says – atleast SEVENTY runs for the whole set. If I got 1 gold for each person that said they would quit GW2 because of this in CoF today (Not one successful run so far) Id be rich.

Magg bugging out in lava run = 99 out of 100 times.
Chance of a team making the “Gate survival” = 0.0001%

Im talking of skilled players with decent gear and good coordination (People Ive played with before) having about zero percent chance of having a shot at completing.

If the devs played the dungeon themselves they might have fixed it. But Im guessing they are sitting in a chair sipping coffee blaming us for being incompetent instead. Pride and stubborness and all that :/

The game already has so much to do, so many time sinks, that even playing ONE character will take forever.

My problem isnt money or experience and all that. It is marks and marks alone.

I did CoF speedruns for 2 entire days (6-10 hours) and got the weapon + helmet.

The total runs for ONE set is maybe 70-100 runs. That is already an extreme amount of time with “only” 20 minute runs.

Having to deal with getting 20-30 marks a few times a day is a gamebreaker for me. If the dungeons are already so long and hard – one should excpect atleast 50 marks minimum per run. 20 minute CoF runs made the game from horrible to MANAGABLE. So unless ArenaNet does some miracle work the next few weeks Im out. Not only from this MMO but MMOs as games in general.

Developers fail, fail and fail some more in listening to the players. Then they wonder why everyone is leaving.

It is a shame because GW2 is the only MMO Ive enjoyed since WoW (Vailla+ burning crusade) and Ive tried them all. They all say the same – “Games for gamers made by gamers”… but each time Im left with a bitter aftertaste like being lied to by politicians.

Here is my advice to ArenaNet. You want people to stay, and be rewarded for their time? Then friggin REWARD them. Minimum 50 marks for a dungeon if this is how its gonna be. There is already a billion time sinks, now you want people to spend half a year to get a set so they can START having fun?

I logged on today to invest another 10 hours doing CoF speedruns. Only to be told by ArenaNet that “Hey, now you have to atleast tripple that time”
