Add a tutorial explaining how to mark a waypoint marker on the map, ie: place a marker on the map that is visible in the minimap to help guide you to that location when traveling on foot without having to open the big map frequently to check your position relative to the destination.

Currently there is nothing telling you that you can do this via pressing Alt & Left Clicking the map. There is no tutorial nor keybinding for it.

Best server for Australia?

I want to be able to walk forward, sidewards and about face with the WASD keys, rather than forwards, side-step and back-step. I know the mouse can be used for re-aiming the direction my character walks in and that I can use the right mouse button to move in that direction. However the problem is turning my character around without having to use a special button dedicated exclusively to 180 degree turns. With a mouse I have to do huge sweeping motions to get the camera to face the enemy before I right-click (and I have to right-click, pressing W won’t make me move in the direction the camera faces because that would be crazy!), with the keyboard I have to hold A or D and wait a year for my character to rotate and face the enemy and then sometimes press W to close a gap between us.

Edit: Enemies walking through me feels like a latency issue because I’ll stop before reaching the enemy yet they’ll walk through me for a bit and end up on the opposite side. I know I can walk through enemies but my observations tell me that enemies are typically programmed to stop once they reach you (unless they use a skill that moves them through you, obviously) so me stopping in front of an enemy should result in the enemy stopping in front of me and not continuing forward.

Hmm, well, the main issue is that I can’t use the ASD keys to adjust the direction my character faces by 90 or 180 degrees. I know there is a key binding for about-face 180 degree turn but I’d really like to be able to adjust the direction my character faces via the ASD keys (Replacing side stepping with walking/facing left/right, while retaining the ability to dodge left/right ie: ditch tank controls).

I also don’t like that if I turn the camera and press W my character will move in the direction their facing rather than the direction the camera is facing (I often turn the camera to face the enemy that walked through me and then have to weirdly fanangle the keyboard controls to get my character to face the enemy that walked through me), I know you can press Left & Right mouse buttons together to get your dude to move in the direction the camera is facing but I’d really like it if QWEASD could be made to behave relative to the camera angle instead of relative to the direction your character is facing.

Also, I’m not a fan of being able to walk through enemies. There’s no option to turn that feature off right? It makes positioning really awkward with current control schemes, at least if you’re a fan of using the keyboard instead of the mouse for controlling the direction you’re facing.

And all of this has nothing to do with the original question: Which server is best for Australia?

What’s the best server for Australia, Queensland? I’m currently on a USA server with 270ms latency… the game does a good job of conveying immediate feedback regardless of the latency it’s just there are issues with positioning that frustrate me, like enemies frequently will walk through me and then attack me from behind etc. because collision detection is broken (I assume this issue is latency related)?

various other quirks that I’m sure are latency related also occur, it’s all pretty minor stuff compared to enemies walking through me but the issues are numerous enough to contribute towards souring the experience.

Still no better Time Remaining in Launcher?

Perhaps, you would benefit from the Streaming Client. (Check the Wiki via the link above.) You can get in to play faster when using it.

Good luck.

Gave it a shot. The Streaming Client and Normal Client both fail to provide any meaningful indication of how much data needs to be downloaded and/or how to tell how long it will take for the download to complete.

I can’t justify updating if I can’t tell how long it is going to take, I can’t justify waiting an unknown amount of time just to play a game.

C’mone ArenaNet, add a meaningful indicator to the Client!

Well a year has gone by and no progress has been made on this so I guess I’ll see ya next year, maybe.

Rapidly losing faith in ArenaNet.

Edit: Currently (And over a year ago) the client does not convey how long I must wait before I can play the game, until such time that it does convey such information to me I’ll continue to not play this game and instead spend my time playing other products from other companies.

I do not find it enjoyable waiting an “indeterminable” amount of time to play something I’ve purchased and will be spending my time with products that don’t have this issue (Basically most other software products in existence). Those other products provide enough information for me to plan my life/general activities around.

Not a bug…more of a suggestion. Patches…always at least 50M. Initial download…about 15-16G. Release updates….well, it’s true those are variable.

Maybe, if enough people ask for it, they will change the display. =)

Personally, I’m fine with it, but I’m not against something different. You can always ask one of your friends how much their download was. I usually watch it for my one friend.

While it isn’t a bug, I do consider it an issue and thus it fits within this forum section.

You shouldn’t need to ask around to figure out how large a download is, it should straight up tell you how big the download will be so that you can plan around it. Blizzard, Grinding Gear Games, Valve and various other companies have launchers/interfaces that inform users of the size of the update.

I hate that topic titles are limited to 45 characters, but at least it isn’t as utterly abysmal as the 30 character per message limit Capcom thinks is reasonable in their Monster Hunter games. Anyways, on with the actual post!

So I’ve noticed that we still don’t have better “Time remaining” indication in the games Launcher?

We still have a completely unhelpful “Files Remaining” indicator that is completely meaningless and unhelpful in determining the time remaining before the update is complete and we also have nothing helpful to inform us of how much data is needed to be downloaded to complete the update (Which is useful for those on Quota’s).

So we still can’t schedule around it very effectively, yay.

When, if ever, will we see a Time Remaining and/or Kilobytes/Megabytes remaining indicator/s?

I may not understand your problem, but if you have forgotten your password, it is the same one you use on the forums. That password is obviously saved in your browser and easy to retrieve using the browser’s tools.

It isn’t (I have tried my Support Account username and my Forum Account password already), you may have set them up to be the same for yourself though as there doesn’t appear to be anything stopping you from doing so when creating an account there.

The popup box when requesting a Password Reset lists several things to try if it doesn’t work, including contacting Customer Support. Every other time I’ve created a Support Case I have received an automated generic response requesting me to follow up the Support Case with a response in order to receive support from actual Customer Support staff, so I don’t see how contacting them is going to achieve much if I can’t get past that stage.

So it seems like I may have finally gotten the email, 17 days after requesting it. However it could also be a phishing attempt so not sure if I can trust the link it provides. (A nasty person could have noticed this thread and could be trying to phish my details)

If someone can confirm the details of the emails header is correct, that would be sweet. I normally wouldn’t request verification like this, but so far I don’t think I’ve ever received an email from ArenaNet that used encryption/security.

LOD&Shadow draw distance is abysmal

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Nicholas Steel.2340

Nicholas Steel.2340

it could be your 2.66ghz CPU

considering stock speed of modern CPU is now 3.5GHZ and around 4.5 GHZ clocked this could be your main issue.

also the i7 920 is an ancient CPU by todays standards : ( so as a result the game is lowering it all to compensate for the very slow CPU.

Does this game even feature dynamic graphical quality scaling tied to general performance? If it doesn’t then hardware shouldn’t have an effect on anything other then frame rate and/or the game crashing from a lack of RAM/Video Memory…

I have been thinking of upgrading motherboard & CPU, just need to DO it which is the issue. I hate spending large amounts of money I’m thinking of the Intel 4770 CPU (Not K as I don’t overclock and the K model lacks features) and ASUS Sabertooth 87 or Deluxe motherboard. Sabertooth comes with longer warranty and more rigorously tested components but lacks the absolute bleeding edge in technology.

I experience utterly abysmal draw distances for shadows in general and especially high quality shadows. I also experience utterly abysmal LOD (Stuff changes in detail short distances away from me, not as noticeable as the shadows though)

Both settings are set to Ultra.

Is this normal? The Shadow Draw Distance reminds me of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 & Borderlands 2 I can create/provide videos of the problem if need be, it isn’t specific to any particular area in the game either (But there are some areas where it is much more noticeable).

Sound FX/dialog delay when entering new area?

When I enter a new area I won’t hear dialog from NPC’s or SFX from things I do (like walking/attacking/receiving mail) until a couple seconds have passed. It didn’t used to be like this, it used to let me hear stuff immediately after entering a new area.

Any reason for the change?

With a 2GB 560Ti I hover around 40FPS with almost everything maxed out at 1920×1080 (Except no Anti Aliasing and the Sampling setting (Reduced, native, Super Sampling) set to Native.). Some areas drop it to 30 and some increase to 60.

I haven’t tried a dungeon yet but I have explored over 25% of the world. The game smooth enough for me to not be distracted by it.

I would suggest a 570, 580, 670 or 680 video card for you if you really truly need that 60FPS.

Is local.dat a cache file (Like a texture cache for decompressed/decoded textures or something)? Can it be safely deleted, will the game recreate it upon launch? And I would’ve thought the EXE file could operate entirely within RAM to enable it to verify the integrity of the EXE file on the HDD, or alternatively make a copy of the EXE file and verify that.

But then again, a corrupt EXE file will cause more immediate and drastic problems then if any of the other files are corrupt so It’s probably safe enough to not bother verifying it. It has to be in pretty good shape to begin the verification process in the first place!

Edit: Anyways, thanks very much.

Nicholas Steel.2340

I’ve been having some minor graphical issues in the game for a few months now as well as the game crashing whenever quitting (The dialog box spawned by the games exception handler would appear then immediately disappear of its own accord…), so I finally decided to do something about it (Other then reporting it via the in-game bug report feature, which I did do at least once or twice to no avail).

So I set about looking for a way to verify the integrity of the game data without simply re-downloading and installing the entire game again and hoping that it would work this time, to that end I stumbled upon this thread https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Corrupted-Files-Causing-Crashes which points out the wondrous “-repair” command. I made good use of that command and the game seems to have detected 10 invalid files according to the log files!

Now I haven’t actually checked yet to see if this resolves either issue, but I have had a look at the log files that were generated. There is one line in the log file that does not seem to be well explained and I was wondering if someone here could help elaborate on what it means.

Here is a copy of the log file in all it’s glory:

When zooming in and out it will change what location the tooltip relates to, when at the zoom level displayed in each picture. Only affects the tooltip/location for the zone you currently occupy.

When zoomed further out no tooltip spawns.

Both of the above problems are resolved temporarily by mousing over an alternate zones label to cause that alternate zones tooltip to spawn. (A process that works flawlessly)

When walking around the world all the shadows on everything flicker off and then back on. It’s not like a rapid series of flickers, no, it’s just flickers off briefly once then back on and happens every so often as you walk around.

It’s very distracting and has only started happening after the last couple of updates to the game (I think the massive 500MB update involving winter themed stuff or whatever, is when it started. Might have started slightly earlier then that but I don’t think so.).

It would be great if we could have an option to just neutralize any constant noise the game emits while maintaining the ability to hear brief audio alerts and stuff that would indicate you are being attacked etc. as the gameplay continues even while the game is paused so anything could happen to you and you won’t be any wiser about it.

It would be great to know the amount of data that needs to be downloaded. The amount of files really doesn’t give us any valid information 10 files could take the same time as 1000 so there is no way of knowing how long will it take or when would be a good time to left the launcher downloading.

Regarding stopping the launcher, every time that you restart it it will go back to 0% of the amount of files that it needs to download, but there are fewer files and you can check the gw2.dat and confirm that it is getting bigger, so it does resume the download correctly, the only thing that resets is the progress bar.

Neat, wasn’t aware of that quirk with the progress bar (Obviously).

Hello I would like to advise you that both the lack of any mention of how much data is remaining to be downloaded and/or how long it will take (Approximately) is very detrimental to my experiences with it. Yes it says how many “Files” are remaining but it doesn’t mention the total size of the files.

Because of this I have no clue how long it will take and can’t create any sort of schedule around it. I have to sit and watch it for a few minutes and work out roughly how long it will take, myself. Something I don’t enjoy doing.

Another issue I have with the downloader/updater is that there is no confirmation dialog box when clicking the button to close the program and the program doesn’t appear to have a “resume download” function either. So as an example of why this annoys me: I had left it downloading the initial game (14GB download!) and it had made 2% progress, at this moment I had decided I wanted to watch some videos on Youtube so I looked for an option to pause/resume the download and could not find any. Thinking that it would at the very least support such a feature when closing the program (And resuming from where it left off when re-opening the program) I closed the program and went and watched some videos. To my horror, when I returned to download the rest of the game I noticed that it had resumed the download back at 0%! That’s like 500MB of downloaded data (And applicable time taken to download it) gone, wasted. I was pretty annoyed at it.

If you were to implement a confirmation dialog box for when closing the program then you could also utilize the dialog box for presenting the user with a caution/warning that closing the program will reset there download progress to 0%, giving the user an opportunity to re-think there decision.

A confirmation dialog box will also minimize the negatives of the possibility of a user going to minimize the program but accidentally moving the courser too far and mistakenly clicking the Close Program button.

The Minimize and Close Program buttons are also positioned in a relatively busy looking part of the program, nestled within some complex artwork making it unnecessarily hard to identify where the mouse courser is positioned when looking to take advantage of either of those features (Though this is mainly a problem with wanting to minimize, not close the program, as you can close the program after minimization but not recover download progress from closing the program.).

Anyways, yeah. Mainly I just want the following:

1) Some kind of confirmation screen when going to close the program.
2) A warning that closing the program will undo any progress towards downloading/updating the game.
3) The amount of data remaining to be downloaded, presented in a more appropriate and useful format.

Any and all emails received from GW2 support fail to pass authentication causing Hotmail to flag the emails as suspicious. I do not enjoy this as it means there is no easy way to distinguish between legit and illegitimate emails pretending to be from GW2.

I check the Source of the emails and have already made a support case regarding this, if it can’t be changed/fixed then I suggest using plain text URL’s instead of hyperlinks in your emails.
