I’m a pve player focusing on dungeons and WvW. I’ve been playing the guardian for a while now, and I’m having trouble finding a build I really like. So far, I’ve tried hammer, greatsword, sword/focus, and even sword/torch without much enjoyment. I love the guardian for what it can do, but find it limiting in how each build I’ve tried makes a portion of my other abilities lack-luster.
Here’s an example. Another build I tried involved stacking retaliation and healing through placing traits in Virtue, Radiance, and Honor. The problem is that I become more of a burn build, and without the crucial traits from Zeal, the build falls apart, and I’m unable to contribute enough damage to kill something. On top of that, Guardian burn builds are horrid for dungeons and fractals, so even though I love the sword/torch, that specific strategy is meant for pvp.
Sorry, I need to bring the topic back to focus. The reason why I don’t like the above build is that it focuses one virtue over the others. I love the virtues Justice, Resolve, and Courage because of their potential in combat, but whenever I run a specific build, the usefulness of one skyrockets while the other two take a back line. Like with the above build, Justice is the dominant virtue, while the others support it…kinda. But if you trait for the other virtues, Justice becomes useless in its entirety.
I am still new to level 80 content with the Guardian, so I’ll be honest, I’m an absolute scrub and would appreciate any information you guys have.
So, without further ado, is there a viable build out there that involves incorporating all virtues into a build rather than making one a priority over the others?
Edit: Sorry again. Viable pve build that incorporates all virtues. Another thing to note, I’m comfortable with all weapons, and this build will be for dungeons and fractals. Thanks, in advance.

In that case, what would the above weapon set be better for? Or what are the issues with it?
I figure I should ask so I can get a better understanding of the current warrior class.
Before I say anything else, I’m returning to GW2 after five months of responsibilities, and seeing how much the game has changed, I’m coming to you guys for assistance.
I’m working on a build that optimizes use of the cripple —-> immobilize trait from the tactics line, and I’m not quite sure how to do it. From there, I want to make use of the off-hand mace’s 5 ability, Tremor, in that a skill-shot knockdown is something I use quite a bit. Additionally, when you pair the above weapon set with the sword/shield set, the sword instantly becomes a gluestick, and the shield is another gap closer with additional CC.
Here’s where I start to have problems. My utilities are all over the place since I see usefulness in all of them. I’ve been using the signets for a bit now, but I don’t know how they compare to actual WvW and PvE combat, which is what I favor. I don’t much like the shouts, but seeing as I’m starting to aim for the 3 line regen ability on the defense route, I might want to use them more often while building more healing power in my gear.
I want to deal some damage, but what with my four weapons being all over the place as far as damage types go, I’m not sure what to focus on. If I focus on power too much, condition damage starts to fall off and my sword bleeds mean nothing. If I focus on precision too much, swords really have no use for it, and half of my weapons would be kitten. At this point, I could focus purely on front-line survivability and cc with vitality, toughness, and healing power, but again, I don’t know where my damage would come from.
Now, here is when it gets super complicated. I don’t even know if the immobilize trait is worth it when it comes to PvE fights, since so many bosses are immune to different sets of CC, that sometimes, I’ll find my weapon sets absolutely useless, and other times, I’ll find them absolutely mind blowing. As a result, I’m debating even going for the trait because of where it might actually be applied besides WvW and select PvE bosses.
What are your guys’ thoughts?

I’m actually leaning more towards the first build. Two regens going, plus fury and might stacking. Thank you Ain. I think I’ll work on your first suggestion and take it from there.
And thanks again Trait. Your help was invaluable, as well.
This is mostly for WvW and PvE since I don’t much like sPvP. I figure since everyone else has some type of swiftness generation in WvW, I don’t really need a warhorn. Plus, it doesn’t mesh with the sword or axe in the ways I use them, so shield and mace for more cc is what I feel comfortable with.
I love the suggestion! The vulnerability from mace works well with the axe, and the block works well after disabling ranged professions. Any other advice?
Putting another post on here to move it back to the top of the list.
I’m a noob when it comes to warriors, so I apologize in advance when I say something stupid or unintelligent.
I have a level 22 warrior, and I’ve worked through all of the weapons, unlocked all of their abilities, and I’ve found Sword/Mace and Axe/Shield to be my favorites.
When you trait so that your cripples become immobilizes, Sword has a ton of cripples, and with Axe having a ranged cripple, that helps with mobs in pve or players in pvp that might be running away. Then, the mace 5 does the same as Axe 3, but makes someone sit, while Shield 4 is the Axe Burst ability with a daze. I absolutely love the control I get out of this and want to work on a build to improve this further.
I prefer tanks, so I don’t mind the lack of damage compared to higher dps classes, and I like that I can control someone until people come along, or I simply cc the mob until it dies.
What I’m asking for is some assistance on a trait build that would revolve around these weapons. I already have chosen shouts for utilities since I want to put 30 into Tactics, but the remaining 40 points I honestly am not sure what to do with. I don’t mind if I have to put some points into power and precision traits since I’ll end up getting gear that will bump my vitality and toughness up, but the details on the traits are hard to wrap my head around.
Any advice would be much appreciated. As with my last post, anything that does not fall into the constructive criticism category will be ignored. Thank you in advance.
I changed it around a bit, and this is what I ended up with.
Your idea and my idea of a tank is drastically different, but I think I understand where you’re coming from and this, and prefer your choice of a build in this situation. Focus on keeping yourself alive rather than keeping others alive. Otherwise, you’re just a walking pillar that everyone can ignore.
Thank you so much for the assistance. I see now why -x% condition duration is beyond useful, haha.
I’ve been playing Warrior for a little over a month now, and I would like some help on fine tuning what I already have. No, the runes and gems and stuff aren’t in my equipment, but this is a general idea of what my build is going for.
My main goal with this build is to control and support in WvW and dungeons. I may not be able to hit hard at first, but by stacking might as the battle goes on, and by keeping myself alive through shouts and regeneration, in theory, I should be able to survive while contributing decently in damage.
I keep hearing about how the condition damage on swords is horrible when compared to other classes, and I don’t much mind that. The reason why I picked sword/mace in the first place was because I wanted cripples so I can activate my traits and immobilize mobs when needed. I would much rather stop a creature from going anywhere than watch it limp towards an ele who wasn’t paying attention in the first place and will end up getting plowed.
With this build, I focused on Healing Power, Toughness (to go with the Armored Attack Trait), and Power. I chose cleric for weapons and accessories while going sentinel in my armor for the much needed health, but beyond that, I focused on being tanky.
Any tips and suggestions are welcome. This means I am looking for constructive criticism. If you post something about how swords are terrabad, how I’m a noob, or anything that falls into the category of “you’re wasting my time”, you will be ignored.
Thank you in advance.
