Hi Roy.

Since you say you’re not really a gamer a lot of stuff that would make your life easier eludes you. Those 6-0 powers are pretty important to an Ele, you know. You probably don’t use them a lot since they’re hard to reach; that why most serious players have bound those keys so easier to reach combinations.

You might not have set a decent build either, which could make your life easier as well. I’ll add you in game so I can teach you what you need to know to be more successful.

Hope to see you soon in game.

Thank you for your tips (given in-game and here) and your help, Pixie, they are much appreciated.

Yes, I re-mapped my top mouse buttons to 6/7 and 8/9 – but I am thinking to try making one or more buttons a meta key instead (shift, control, alt) so I only have to press one or two in combination with my 1,2,3,4,5 keys which are easier to reach.

My biggest issue is the speed of the combat. It wants to feel like an action-combat MMO (a la Blade and Soul or Black Desert Online), but is still mostly a tab-target style with an avoid mechanic (a la DDO, I think). The combat is fast-paced, so timing is everything, and it is only exacerbated for me by the very short duration buffs (i.e. 2 seconds of stability really needs to be timed well to be useful).

I’ve run the first dungeon twice now – both times were a rushed thing, where I skipped the cut scenes to keep up with my party; the first time was terrible. The second, on my Revenant, was quite enjoyable. I think I really like the revenant more, but I’ll see as I level it to 80 and start end game. Leveling with my elementalist was not the issue for me, but the end game stuff.

The post you quoted was made two years ago.

Indeed it is! You will also note that the last posts were about how it did not work. I came here via a search (as others may), so for posterity, I added that it does work.

I did see once that I could not interact with the pipe organ (it’s name disappeared, etc), so that’s why I searched and found this. God forbid another new player do the same. For me, it was because another player had just interacted with it, and apparently there is a “cool down” or something. I simply waited and the name / interaction came back.

It’s still not working, the game client decided it wanted to crash right in the middle of my second attempt (baring in mind i didn’t play it right the first time round), and came back online and i can’t even interact with it unfortunately.

Well, I am new to the game, just found this while reading the story books (The Founding, parts 1-20) and tried the 5-6-5-4-9-1-8-3-5 sequence – entering it TWICE in a row, and it opened the door on the left for a chest. Plus it played a nice tune.

I use a Roccat Tyon (white), because I have big hands and fingers, and the button placements are easy for me (especially the top-side four). Not a plethora of buttons along one side (I never could use those).

If you have large hands / big fingers, I highly recommend it.

How important is gold/crafting in this game?

I think one of the best things for Gathering / Crafting in this game is the shared resources bank. You can keep alts in low- or mid-levels to do daily farming of nodes, etc. and it all goes to the same resource bank (account-wide) without visiting a bank, even. That’s some serious QoL stuff, in my book.

If money is not tight, I recommend buying (Gem Store) the +250/stack expansion (at least one, that way, you can have 500 in each stack in your resource bank). I’d also invest in the permanent tools – especially the Watchwork Mining Pick.

Also, though expensive, the shared inventor slots (up to 5) make sharing the permanent tools and Salvage-O-Matic between alts very convenient (though you’ll have to remember to unequip and move to the shared slots before logging out).

Finally, there is the additional crafting skill unlock (buy two) for a total of 4 crafting professions on each character (so less alts, if you roll that way).

So many really good, quality of life enhancements in this game compared to others. I don’t mind dropping fifty bucks here and there for gems… plus, you can sell them for gold if you need it and be a whale (like me!) in supporting this game, because my time and convenience are easily worth that to me. If it is not worth it to you, then there may be a whole new challenge that awaits (lack of QoL play!).

Aww — don’t give up just because Ele is squishy. Try another profession. After starting with Thief and Ele mains back at launch and eating way too much dirt, I tried Guardian and was in love. She was my dungeon main for a long time because she could tough out most anything. Couldn’t kill a mouse, as I built her for support, but I had dps friends who didn’t yell “be zerker or gtfo!” at me, and she could last through most any combat that wiped the rest. Eventually I moved to mesmer for dungeons and fractals.

Ele really is the squishiest profession and needs the most stance dancing to be effective. Please test things out with something sturdier and you’ll feel much better about yourself. I know I did.

Yeah, I am getting killed by almost everything now that I’m 80 (couldn’t finish main story / last mission), cannot solo the Living World Season 2 stuff, and the HoT stuff is also killing me fairly quick (but there are other players usually).

I know my problem is I do not team, have no guild, and like solo play (in an MMO). I am wondering if I need to be a young kid with twitch reflexes to play this class, as I don’t always change elements, and don’t use my #6 – #0 powers much (2-3 are usually signets or whatever, for the passive bonuses).

From my point of view, 1-70ish was fairly easy – sometimes challenging and always fun. Then the “end game” sneaks up, and it’s like a lot of work to just not die, and that’s not a lot of fun for me (though I understand some people love that).

I made a warrior, and so far it’s fun and easy (but so was ele at this level)… we’ll see. Thank you for the encouragement and words of wisdom.

If I might make a suggestion, Roy, as someone else who likes to run dual-dagger Ele, make sure you have a decent staff or scepter (your preference, in PvE at least) in your bags. Some bosses, like the Spider Lord, lay down way too much damage at point blank range for most Eles to survive. Pulling out of combat and having the gear to switch to a ranged attack is often the key to beating these guys.

Yeah, ultimately I had another player offer to help. The person was very well geared and experienced and made it seem fairly simple.

I have played GW2 for a total of about 2-3 weeks, this is my first (and only) character above level 10, so I am still (hopefully) getting the hang of things. I just feel like I went from “decent challenge” or “fun” to slap-my-face “you suck” in the main story. Perhaps I want the game to be easier (I’m not a “video gamer” person), maybe I am too old for the reflexes required (mid 40’s), I don’t know.

Now, I am at the part where you are on the airship and I barely can get past the “fight the boarders while also using the cannons’ shields” part and it sucks to solo for me. What’s worse is all those NPCs sitting on their kitten inside the bridge while I am expected to use the various cannons while dealing with the 2-3 mobs that spawn on the bow of the ship. Great. Thanks for the help, guys. I mean, why bother having anyone else on the ship?

Then I get to the part where the dragons attack, and I have to use the shield and the attack from the cannons, oh, and here’s MORE mobs on the bridge that are even more difficult… but that’s OK, the NPCs are still sitting on their kitten and watching one person do everything. It’s like being the new guy in a union shop. Really not fun. Maybe it’s a challenge for others, perhaps they really want people to team up (give us a hint?), but solo elementalist seems like it’s out-grown my inept play style.

I really love this game, maybe I’ll just stick to leveling up toons to the mid 60’s or so, and end it there.

Yet another necro… I am at this point with my first character (been playing a couple weeks now), and this fight is basically impossible for me. I am an Elementalist with dual daggers, and only once did I even get to the Spider Lord’s second form / phase 2.

As with all the others: NPCs are useless, way too many mobs for one player, and too much cc. Granted, the little spiders make reviving easy, but something hits me so hard, I don’t even get the option to fight to survive. I’m guessing it’s the Locust Swarm? I can’t even see what it is, there’s too much going on too quickly, and since my character is the only one fighting (plus my earth elemental), it really seems like I have hit a brick wall.

Then to hear that the “other” choices are fairly simple really is like salt in the wounds. Now that the game is F2P, I am doubting this gets looked at by the developers ever. I’d like to know if that one poster actually opened a ticket to change paths/decisions for his story arc…

Leveling up: Upgrade equipment or not?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Old Roy.5924

Old Roy.5924

I am still leveling up my first (hopefully) toon to 80, and I was wondering if it is worth buying runes or whatever to put in the “upgrade slots” (1 or 2) that some equipment has. Some pieces, as is likely known, already have something, and I did buy some cheap Bloodlust sigils for my daggers to help my survivability on my elementalist.

However, I have not really put in any of the items I’ve found (or crafted as a jeweler) into my equipment because I figure it’s probably not worth it until 80. Am I off base here?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Currently, I have GW2 installed on my Samsung 850 Pro SSD and don’t notice much in the way of load times at all. As a comparison, I played Fallout 4 from there, and it still has some length to it’s loading screens. Wildstar and BDO (the other two MMO’s I have installed on that SSD) all load relatively quick (less than 5-10 seconds); GW2? I don’t really even notice. Maybe I’ll copy it to an HDD and see if I am being spoiled by the 850 pro… probably am.

I just started playing GW2 for the first time, but I noticed that Living World Season 2 – Complete was on sale in the gem store. Seeing how I may be sticking with GW2 (really like it so far, why I never tried it before is beyond me!), should I start with season 1, then 2, then HoT?

Not sure how these modules or stories work yet (my highest toon is 34ish), but I like the idea of cash shop modules (well, that’s what we called them in D&D); however, I could not find a season 1. Is season 2 a continuation, so I’ll be jumping into something that I won’t get the background for? Or is it stand-alone, story-wise?

I’d like to progress slowly, as I enjoy the journey to end game more than end game, typically, so any advice is appreciated!

Sharing and Running GW2 off a NAS

in Account & Technical Support

Old Roy.5924

Apologies if this has been asked, the search feature seems broken for me, turning up nothing all the time…

Anyway, as the title implies:
Has anyone had any success at running GW2 from a NAS, shared among computers on a local LAN?

My kids and I all game, so there are three (3) of us connected to my various servers, one of them being for Steam. This way, when one of us updates a game on steam, the next person to log in will see the updated version, etc. Update once, play among three.

Now some games need local installs (i.e. CS-GO), but most can be shared. I was curious if the following were possible:
1) Main game file (the 27gb one) resides on NAS, accessed by multiple clients at the same time.
2) Clients are installed locally, and point to NAS for game file using (if exists) an over-ride for the location. Something like “GW2-64.exe -L <mapped-location>”
3) Client is server-side (on the NAS) and can be shared/accessed by multiple users at once?

My network is a gigabit (obviously) and the gaming NAS is a dual-ethernet Synology DS1813+ (8×4TB drives, hybrid raid – like ZFS?), so performance may not be as good as local, but it’s usually pretty decent!

Anyone know if this has been done in the past?

64-Bit Client Beta FAQ

Old Roy.5924

I just started playing GW2 for the first time, and I have only downloaded the 64-bit client. I run it under WINE in Linux (Mint 17.3) and occasionally in Windows 10. Maybe because I am not in a dungeon or raid (or whatever they’re called here) but I do not notice any lag or hiccups in either OS. Windows is a few FPS better, but both are above 30fps, and usually around 50+ or so.

I was quite surprised and pleased at how organized the game is. Using one big datafile/archive is really sweet! My next goal is to get my kids into the game and run it off a shared server (NAS) like we do with 95% of our steam games (FPS shooters tend to need local installs). I suppose that is a whole different thread: sharing the shard, as it were… clients would be local (I assume there’s a location over-ride like “GW2-64.exe -location <here>” or something).

Vulkan came up in an AMA recently. There are no plans to change graphics engines, such as to DirectX12 or Vulkan. Sorry!

That is too bad. I’m not keen on moving to DX12, but it would be interesting to see how Vulcan pans out. The industry needs it to start and break out of the Windows Catch-22 they are in. SOMETHING needs to be done, lest they all be at Microsoft’s mercy, and from what I’m gleaning, it isn’t going to be fun for devs (who do not sign their souls over) in the long run.

Is there even a GW3 in the works or on the boards? Sorry if this has been asked, I have only recently come to discover Guild Wars (yeah, better late than never?).

I run GW2 (64-bit client) just fine under Linux (my serious OS) using WINE. In fact, I just mounted my Windows (my toy OS) game drive (SSD formatted NTFS) and pointed my wine shortcut to it, and voila! You will have to modify /etc/fstab to properly do NTFS, but it is very easy (fmask, umask, etc).

There are a lot of how-to’s out there, and GW2 runs quite well under Linux. I really doubt they will be converting it to Vulkan API’s, as they are quite new – but you never know.

I followed (mostly) the manual section in this guide except I had already downloaded the game under windows and since it was already on a drive, didn’t re-download it.
