It seems like there’s some misunderstanding regarding the purpose of the short stories that we publish on the Web site. They are not meant to “write outside the game” such that the game is unplayable without them, nor are they meant to provide vital information to the in-game story for a particular Living World release. They are purely optional stories meant to provide additional context and lore for those who care. If we felt that the inclusion of this information was critical to understanding the plot or playing the content then we would put it inside the game, plain and simple.
On a related note, some of the lore stories use imagery or situations that would be more difficult, time consuming, or expensive to replicate in the game. Some wouldn’t add anything meaningful to gameplay. So if you’re finding it stressful that these optional pieces exist external to a Living World release, I suggest not reading them.
You also have to keep in mind that we’re pacing the Living World stories such that you may not understand the full picture inside a given release. For example, Scarlet made her first appearance in August but she was hinted at in prior months. Her story has not resolved at this time, therefore we haven’t divulged some significant details about her origins or motivations. It’s understandable why some people would be upset or impatient by not getting these details all at once, but rest assured that we’re not conveniently forgetting about these tidbits—we’re just saving them for later.
Regarding SAB World 2, there is a story that is presented in-game. To experience it, first you must beat World 2 and then preview World 3. I won’t spoil it, so I encourage you to figure out the rest.
Thanks, as always, for the feedback. We read as much as we can.
The problem I’m seeing is that there seems to be a disconnect between what you guys feel is “important” and what some of the critics see as “important”. Take Scarlet for example, her short story explains her origin and the vehicle through which she became a villain. I’m wondering how this wouldn’t be important to the plot of the living story?
I see you’ve also commented on the fact that the living world story is not something that can be explained in one release. The problem I see with this is that the current story arc took almost an entire year(I believe 8 months from frost and flame to Scarlet’s reveal?) to reveal “The Big Bad”. To me, the problem isn’t that we didn’t find out every fact about Scarlet’s life. The problem is it took so long to reveal her that people expected to get a greater picture of what the hell was going on. Instead we just get an introduction and the very next patch is SAB
People keep mentioning the waypoints, but this is not the primary reason for mounts in my mind, mounts are a vanity item that make moving around on the ground a bit quicker. Waypoints make travel between waypoints faster yes but that doesnt mean we couldnt ride a horse after waypointing.
Arenanet has already specifically said that mounts will not be added to the game. Period.
They also said there wouldnt be new gear tiers added and that the living story would permanently change the world.
Mounts would be excellent and add to the horizontal progression system in the game(could give mounts for living world release meta rewards and in boxes). Could have race-specific ones as well and itd make exploring more fun.(could even have “mount” jumping puzzles only possible if you have a mount)
I got a mail after the opening of super adventure box release from Scarlet, she mentions that she’s going to “make a side project out of me” and that “we’ll be seeing more of each other”. Is this confirmation or just flavor lore for Scarlet?
Seems like putting a book in Durmand Priory would be the most logical answer
Maybe the Queen doesn’t say much maybe because she is merely Countess Anise’s illusion. Anise is a powerful mesmer, she can make her illusions speak like the Fake Rytlock Brimstone during the opening ceremony of Queen’s Jubilee.
We also don’t know who ruled before Queen Jennah. There is no Royal Mausoleum or Royal Graveyard in the game. Monarchs are usually replaced by their heirs when they die.
If I remember correctly the king 60 years ago was named Roderick(NPCs in divinity’s reach mention his name) and im sure theres something in game saying who Jennah’s mother is
Really? Her “big announcement” was that “hoomanz stronk”? In what world is that a big announcement? If Obama announced an important announcement and the entire world was watching and he announced “lol US da best” how many people would think its important in any way at all? Gw2 story just disappoint more and more…

Page 2 speaks of the expansion point.
They asked him if LS replaces expansions and he said yes in a general sense. He did not however say that there never will be an expansion.
Right, I read that part, but my point is that while he uses southsun cove as an example, southsun itself isnt worthy of being called an expansion zone. It is a great zone, but I don’t think, for example, the crystal desert or far shiverpeaks could be added in one update like this. Would they split up these larger areas into a zone per release? How would they add something like Orr- a lair of a dragon, in an update?
I don’t work for Anet, so I have no idea how they want to do it, but they are not necessarily looking into adding new zones necessarily so the answer may be that they are not going to do that at all. But again, I wouldn’t know, I am only saying that the OP is not correct in his conclusion.
That’s interesting, I wonder if it’s feasible to only develop the existing world by putting new stuff in existing zones

This really wouldn’t bother me as much if they would explain how they’re going to put “expansion features” in the game. Will zones come in living story updates? Races? Right now its not that their atypical content flow is bad, its that their communication of how it replaces traditional content flow is bad
Saw this on a post in another thread and felt it deserved it’s own discussion.
Isn’t it rather sad that the most popular feature of GW2, is a mini-game that has nothing to do with GW2?
Kind of puts things into perspective if you think about it. People are more interested in a Mario style game instead of the actual game. Just seems rather bad that out of all the Living Story stuff we have received, a mini game that is not really GW2 at all is the most popular of them all.
Just makes you feel this game is doing something wrong if people are more excited about an 8bit Mario game instead of the actual GW2 game.
The only thing I find sad is how every single new content patch that has been released in the last 2 months is met by dozens of cry threads. I like the super adventure box, I have been waiting for them to bring it back since they got rid of it. If you don’t like it then don’t play it, 14 days after release there will be something else that you may like that I don’t, how about acting like an adult instead of that five year old in the cereal isle screaming because mommy won’t buy him his favorite sugar rush.
His post says that it’s sad that SAB is the BEST living world release. This would imply SAB is good, and that it doesnt make sense that side content such as it, should be the best. Thus it’s a criticism of OTHER content.
Seasons
Better Weather Effects
Dark Nights (no, not Christian Bale)Well darnit, there goes my suggestion for who to voice the next male in the Living Story to go up against Scarlet.
Seriously though, if we could get seasons and weather effects, this would be awesome. I don’t think it’s quite simple to work with . . . but if they could get it right before Minecraft’s modders . . .
Purchasable Real Estate
Player Owned Shops
Player Owned Farms (for Livestock and Produce). . . you know that puts it two seconds away from “Farmville” comparisons?
Fishing, Hunting & Farming Professions
Or one line.
In seriousness, I would like to have a farm or such to cultivate cooking ingredients difficult to find in the open world, OR as a means of cultivating some Fine crafting ingredients.
Player-Generated Dynamic Events
CoX did that, and with predictable results: events designed specifically to be farms.
I don’t want to sound like a drama queen but im losing faith in humanity if player housing is being compared to farmville
How about a more detailed TP search function ?
The game has been out for a year… and we still can’t even do something as simple as search or sort by armor type – really now?
^This!^ omg I never really think about that until I’m wanting to buy new armor. Sifting past all the Heavy/Light sets with the same stats is just a pure annoyance.
There are only two reasons I can think of that they haven’t done this glaringly obvious step:
1) They profit too much from accidental purchases
2) They aren’t smart enough to do itWith what I’ve seen this past year, I’m betting on #1
3. On the list of priorities none of the thing the op mention is on the top except LFG which is being worked on.
Guild halls is one of those things that were popular for like 3 month then rarely ever used in guild wars 1 aka not a priority.
Conquest: it the main mode for pvp, game wasn’t properly designed for deathmatch. Or any other mode without serious modificaitons to every skill.
sorry but guildhalls were amazing

Most of the other veterans have left the company and many are still leaving.
Wow, that page is one of the most revealing and depressing things I’ve read about this game, and explains a lot.
Thanks for the link.
Makes me realise that it isn’t really going to get any better.
I’ve gotten down to just doing my daily this week. I may experiment with not even doing that this weekend. Then I can finally walk away from this game.
I got to this stage with MMOs once before and took a long hiatus. This may just be the final nail in the coffin.
I’m fed up of being exploited as a player.I totally agree with you man, they can’t even have dogs at the office, I mean what kind of business doesn’t let you have fido at your desk, ARENA NET. /quits
I also found this funny, it seems a bit entitled to list “no pets” as a con to working for a company
The financial reports shows that Last year GW2 made a lot of money and in the first two quarters of 2013 sales are down dramatically, like 70% down…Also the second quarter was down from the first quarter again. So the financial reports actually show that the game is going down financially in the first half of this year. In that sense GW2 has followed the same trend as other MMOs.
Anet/NcSoft have also said that by now the game is stabilising and slowly growing again. So the game is not dying but financially I don’t think they’re exactly sitting on roses either.
So my assessment is that it’s doing ok. Not great, not horrible, but ok.
Does the sales figure account for the gem store?
YES!
Very interesting, thanks for the post

Aww man. This sucks if its true. He was one of the devs that was pretty consistent at posting on the forums and answering questions.
Why are we jumping to the conclusion that they fired a bunch of employees? Maybe they are actually expanding job positions and hiring more people to keep up with the ridiculous demands of the playerbase?
Isn’t that what people here wanted? Hire more devs to fix bugs and such? Hire more artists to update and create more skins in the game?
Well the did post on twitter that they are hiring:
ArenaNet ?@ArenaNet 18h
ArenaNet is hiring! Positions are listed on our site, incl. server programming, localization & more: http://www.arena.net/ #gamejobs ^RB
Yeah, so? They could be expanding? If they were having layoffs they wouldn’t even be doing any hiring to begin with.
….He’s posting a tweet that supports what you said.
theyre billing themselves as the fastest selling mmo so unless they have some sever cognitive dissonance im assuming that means money
First let me start off saying that I’m not trying to bash Arenanet. I think their game is great. I enjoy playing it. I enjoy smashing scarlet’s head in several times a day. Secondly, these are just my opinions. Having said that, I have a criticism of the current Living World model and possible solutions.
The Living World system as it stands now is great for delivering new content at a rapid pace. Things like Super Adventure Box, Southsun Cove, and Queen’s Jubilee were great and offered players alot to do, without having to wait for an expansion or a big “Content Patch”. This is because those patches in particular took advantage of the rapid release model to provide a several weeks framework for people to enjoy a range of activities. Crab Toss, World 1, Queen’s Gauntlet, Wasting All Your Gold On Liadri(ok maybe this was just me). The point is, these releases seemed to consciously acknowledge the length and essence of Living World.
Now the problem is, is that many of the releases aren’t doing this. Let’s look at Clockwork Chaos. Clockwork Chaos’ main content activity is running around the map with your server heroically stopping Ketchup Salad from invading the world. Great, sounds fun in theory. The problem is, in reality its two weeks of following big zergs and pressing 1 because everyone finds it more beneficial to farm instead of do the portals, mostly because the end of invasion rewards are pretty much the same whether you finish or not. The content doesnt take into account thakittens a living world release. Its structured as if it were meant for a weekend.
This is the problem I’m finding with many of the releases: They aren’t structured around being a limited released for a month or two weeks. Lets look at dragon bash. The festival consisted almost entirely of hitting f thousands of times in lions arch to break pinatas, or spamming the holographic dudes at generators. While Dragon Bash was fun for a weekend, it was not designed for players to have fun over a longer period of time. This is the problem, the content is unfocused around being a chapter in the living world. There are too many “novellas”. There’s a problem when the most fun activity in your release is a moa-betting minigame.
This lack of focus also seems to lend itself to the overall narrative of the living world as well. The developers understand that every so often we need a break from story for a fun activity such as super adventure box. I have no problem with this. The problem is, is that there isn’t enough story for me to even WANT to take a break. “Oh, hey, we found out who the villain behind Molten Alliance and Aetherblades is. Can’t wait to find out her motives in the next patch and go after her.” Wait no we’re going to do Super Adventure Box instead.
Each release seems to give us the bare minimum in regards to story, and quite frankly, its making me start to not care. Half of September is SAB. I suspect half of october will be mad king. december’s latter half is wintersday. So we have a limited amount of time to figure out who the hell scarlet briar is. The fact that we might not even figure any of this out till 2014 is…..disappointing. The current living world story arc has been going in earnest since January and we still have almost no concrete idea of what is even going on. This is the problem.
Now here is where I offer my amateur, non-developer, likely-to-be-called-complete-kitten-kitten-kitten-solutions.
1. Have teams rotate out a couple different story arcs. If the teams have more time to work on Scarlet’s arc between releases, I find it likely that the focus could improve while still having good instances/farming/flavor content.
2. Have 1 fluff patch between every serious patch. By this I mean have a random festival/SAB/orrian x-treme bobsledding release so that the serious stuff has more time to develop
3. Make each arc shorter. This would allow stories like Scarlet’s to be solved faster without writers feeling the need to stretch to allow multiple content releases in each arc. This would also help us explore more of Tyria and the groups within it instead of spending months with the same group and learning nothing.
Thanks for reading, I hope you havn’t lost your mind in rage : )
The story specifically states she is not nightmare. She is soundless but not one of the soundless if that makes sense
Can we take this statement to mean that no “expansion” content has been worked on? Since I assume you’d have to know the method before you developed it all
We’ve said this before, so it shouldn’t be a spoiler, but it’s clear that the message hasn’t totally gotten out there yet:
For the past year, we’ve had some larger projects going on in the background we haven’t discussed yet. Our major focus however has been on making the core Gw2 live game as solid as possible, details of what’s coming still to address that core game experience can be found here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
For the projects cooking in the background, we’ll go into more detail on those in the future.
Thanks for the response Colin, I feel reassured : )
Some people here should actually read this short story before they complain about it
So from this, we can add some things to Scarlet:
Master Smith
No she just spent one winter with a master smith and left him at the begin of spring. She wasn even close to be a master smith when she left him.
Master Sniper
There are no indication that she IS a master sniper. She just hung around with a good sniper for two years
Evil for the sake of being evil
More like gone mad from revelation
earn the respect of all three Charr legions to be trained by them
Thanks for the joke. Go read the story an you’ll see that she isn’t trained by all three Charr legions. Scarlet spent two years with a gladium. a Gladium, not the three Legions.
Nothing against critizising a character but some of you are sue-ing Scarlet much more than Anet.
yeah the story specifically mentions that she left before she could attain master status, despite the protests of her mentors
Technically she attacked the norn and the charr first, then Lion’s Arch and then the queen. Just because you didn’t see her prior to the Queen’s Jubilee doesn’t mean she wasn’t involved. The number of people who haven’t picked up on this shows how poorly communicated the story has been.
The difference, I believe, is that she never purposely singled out the norn or charr, she had the molten alliance cause chaos in their countryside to displace people, lions arch was only a small raid to murder a captains council member to get mai trin on the council. Kryta is the first full assault, and the only one she specifically says she wants to see “in flames”, also trying to kidnap jennah
To add insult to injury, the next release on the release page appears to be super adventure box…
Actually this is great news. They should keep the box in, add to it slowly as it’s easy to develop new content for. They can use this time to refocus their efforts on the game they promised in the manifesto. I am by no means saying this should be the only content added, but from a living story standpoint they need more time to develop than what they are doing now.
sorry, i think i wasnt very clear. I enjoy the super adventure box, I just question the timing of revealing the gw2 equivalent of joker and then having tyria play video games. While normally i’d agree with your second part, they had half a year to build up scarlet.
Is it actually stated anywhere that she has ‘benefactors’?
No there’s no concrete statement about it, im just making inferences
If she was behind the Molten Alliance (it’s implied but not explicitly stated) then she was “targeting” Hoelbrak and the Black Citadel. She was behind Mai Trin’s attempt to get onto the Captain’s Council so she’s also “targeting” Lion’s Arch. Honestly, it’s probably not worth asking these questions because the story isn’t giving us any information to work with. You will find out when they spell it out for you. For now at least, she didn’t specifically target Kryta, she seems to cause chaos for most of Tyria.
There’s no indicator she was ever targeting hoelbrak or the citadel, only seeking to displace the norn and charr in those areas. Lion’s arch was based on intrigue since a captains council position would allow her some control over the military actions of the city. the only one directly assaulted- and she states she wants it in flames- is kryta
That grudge, I think, is where most of the expansion on her backstory will take place. pre-patch build up aside, she deliberately threatens human society. Also, did you notice how humans are the only ‘major’ race she didn’t supposedly learn from?
That’s true, perhaps this indicates that the monarchy somehow snubbed her- or perhaps her “benefactors” are anti-human?(mursaat?)
Also her naming scheme seems to be human as well. Charr usually get a last name dependent on their warband and her last name doesnt sound nornish.
In the middle of an invasion, i realized something: Scarlet had specifically targeted divinity’s reach. Why is this? In the pre-patch materials she states she wants to see kryta in flames. This seems to indicate some sort of hatred or background with the human kingdom. What could a loony sylvari with an army of lava-charr-dredge and skypirates possibly want with some monarch?
what doesnt make sense to me about scarlet is why she’s focused on the human kingdom of kryta. Looking at her past, it would make far more sense to invade the grove or rata sum. From the pre-patch build up we know that she specifically wanted to see KRYTA in flames. Why? What could a mad sylvari leading the molten alliance and aetherblades possibly want with kryta?
One of the problems I’m seeing is that if you use the living story to add, say, the crystal desert to the game- how can you add an entire zone with hubs and quests and dungeons and stuff in a living story patch? if you add the zone but no content itd be disastrous
To add insult to injury, the next release on the release page appears to be super adventure box…
i hate to be a downer but are they really going to do sab right after they reveal scarlet is invading tyria
I just want to remind folks again, the features and content you’d traditionally find in an expansion will absolutely be added to Gw2. The thing we haven’t decided is what form the release of that content would be presented in, be it a traditional expansion, living world, or some other form.
Can we take this statement to mean that no “expansion” content has been worked on? Since I assume you’d have to know the method before you developed it all
Three points I want to make, then I’m gone for a few more weeks again…..
1) The opinions of the most vocal among us is not the opinion of the majority. Just because the forums were on fire doesn’t mean that I and many others hated the Living Story. Totally the opposite.
2) Anet just Introduced the Character, and again, we have the most vocal among us trying everything they can to dismiss the character as the most cliche evil villian ever, when they don’t even know anything about her. (Seriously…, The Elder Dragons are probably further into cliche territoty than Scarlet is.)
3) There is MORE to come. How many times does someone at Anet have to say this? Seriously, do people watch the first 30 seconds of a movie, say its horrible, then leave the theater, and waste 14 bucks(If you do this, it might explain your lack of gold in Guild Wars 2)? Or is everyone going to stop crying over everything you see wrong with Guild Wars 2, and wait for everything to play out?
People are complaining because anet stated that this would be where everything got tied together and we got answers about who was behind everything. The issue isn’t that scarlet is a mysterious insane villain(she’s alot of fun in the invasions and instance), its that the “answer” living story is just another question. I’d wager that if anet had never stated this was an “answers” living story, the forums would be full of praise(because like i said, she’s a great villain)
But why would any race leave their homes to move in to another race’s ancient land that is totally different to what they are used to and is pretty far away.
You can force this for sure… but srsly we know the Pact and the storytelling – bunch of good-doers. They know where Orr belongs to and they will give it back to humanity. Not Kryta, humanity.
And LA was founded by mostly human pirates, not other races moving in after a flood.
i was referring to lions arch because its a multicultural city
and yes it doesnt make sense for anyone else to take it which is why i was talking about how much of a storm it would cause
I wonder if the same people that hate Scarlet hate Abaddon. Because if we are talking about clichés and overdone tropes, Abaddon takes the cake. Dark fallen god that comes out of no where, but he was secretly behind most/all the villains the hero faced previously? Talk about an overdone fantasy cliché.
The difference is that abbadon’s explanation makes sense
it makes sense for a fallen god to be able to do those sorts of things
it doesnt make sense for a random sylvari to suddenly do things no-one thought possible
To be perfectly honest Orr will probably remain in pact hands for a long, long time. IF the pact were eventually to move out,Arah and the temples would probably be returned to human control(I honestly can’t see Kryta letting anyone else but the pact hold it) but most of the continent would remain open to everyone especially considering the nearby safety of fort trinity
the temples will most likely be caretaken by humans if they are not needed to be taken down because of dragon corruption
i dont think Kryta get much of a say in there but a new nation with mixed races sounds likely as it might be a good ide if they can work toghter
I really don’t see humanity taking it well if arah were handed to someone else. To the point where it might cause a problem with the pact because of how many humans would drop out/start resistance against them. I pretty much see it like you said: anywhere that isnt arah or a temple will be a sort of lions arch deal.
The fight itself is actually very well done and I think a perfect example of where a challenge belongs in the game: non-mandatory side content in a living story patch that people can pursue if they want a challenge. Having said that, there are some issues with the fight.
1. The grating is NOT conducive to being able to see the red lines on the ground especially if some sort of animation blows up in your face mid fight
2. the camera angles from being in the bubble can ABSOLUTELY RUIN an otherwise perfect run. I can’t tell you how many times I died attempting this because of the bubble ruining camera angles
Might be. In all honesty, I like them better than DE anyway, lol xD
Caithe and Faolain’s story just came off as generic to me, Logan fell in love with Jennah out of… absolutely nowhere (unless mesmer magic, which I suppose isn’t out of the question)… I don’t really mind Eir, Zojja or Rytlock.
logan has been in love with jennah since before the events of the game
If I remember correctly Samuelson is a Duke that has sworn fealty to Queen Jennah.
So technically speaking Ebonhawke is the capital of the Duchy of Ascalon, under Queen Jennah of the Kingdom of Kryta
It’s funny how people assume we’ll know everything about the villain in the first chapter, and when we naturally don’t, they call it weak writing. Some people have no patience for storytelling.
This isn’t what happened though. Anet said that this living story would tie up the loose ends. It didn’t. If they wanted this to simply reveal scarlet and have later patches tie up the current story arc, they should have said “will reveal the person behind all the recent events” instead of “will tie it all together”. Because as of right now we have no idea who, how, why, or what the combined forces of scarlett even are
That’s assuming the recognizable aspect of the personal nemesis would be in universe, and not just in this particular game. Someone new to the Guild Wars universe would most certainly not recognize Lazarus.
But then what’s left? The way Scarlet acts makes me believe that the bigger force, and thus personal nemesis, is of a whole different level than the regular NPC’s. However, I can’t put a realistic fitting character in this position =/
This is a good point, the recognize statement would only apply to guild wars 1 players. However, I think that would sort of be something they could pull off. Otherwise, it would have to be one of only a few characters that are prominent in the game so far
@Pacifica
I was thinking along the same lines as well. The “seeing the Eternal Alchemy” was something akin to Ascension, and it could have gave her True Sight. That might have made her the target of Lazarus’ machinations.
Sadly, that is still wild speculation without further details…
Some afterthoughts I had to add:
Vorp expresses doubt that what she saw was the eternal alchemy because according to him the eternal alchemy isn’t something you can see.
Scarlet states that the aetherblades follow her because they “like being alive”(paraphrasing). in guild wars 1 the mursaat slaughtered an entire group of krytans who were working for them, making this employment of fear make sense.
as of right now im just gonna assume anet has plans to reveal scarlet’s past(and possible benefactors) in a later patch.
if that patch doesnt arrive soon i’m going to have to say she’s a terribly bad story villain(though shes incredibly good during player interaction)
Your all forgetting one detail that was said by the asura, she saw the eternal alchemy so maybe she was driven mad by seeing it!
Not quite, he BELIEVES she went mad because of it, but all we know is that after whatever happened she went mad. It could be that what she was some malevolent force that made her think it was the alchemy and had her do its evil bidding.
Scarlet is great when it comes to the actual interaction with the character. If I didn’t know her backstory I’d say she’s an entertaining crazy lunatic who we need to put down. AS OF RIGHT NOW though, her backstory is the most eye-roll worthy thing written in the game. I’m very suspicious that anet has a reason that she was able to pull this off(someone controlling the person you thought was the villain seems to be something anet likes). Until that point comes though, scarlet is a blight on the overall story. But again, when im fighting her in the dungeon, she’s an A+ villain.
I’m only speculating, however, it’s Lazarus the Dire pulling the strings.
I’ve recently put stock into this theory because Scarlet is said to have gone insane after seeing “The Eternal Alchemy”. It’s entirely possible scarlet actually saw lazarus(perhaps her process to see the alchemy instead gave her sight of mursaat) or lazarus brainwashed her into believing she had seen the eternal alchemist. remember, in gw1 saul is also in awe at the mursaat. The second reason i believe this is because the two characters also accomplish inhuman feats. Scarlet graduates three asuran colleges while saul manages to push back the unstoppable charr.
If anyone sees any wholes in my theories please let me know : )
