Grenade damage reduced 30%

The sigil explanation is a rather transparent lie; otherwise grenades wouldn’t be the only kit being nerfed.

Still, I agree with this change. Considering the sigil bonuses, this should result in an effective 15-20% nerf to grenade damage, which seems perfectly resonable. Grenades were way out of line compared to the other weapons and kits.

Flame Jet Range

The current range is fine for this type of kit. It just needs to hit reliably and either do a bit more damage or get a bit more utility.

For the record, I don’t think FT will see any range or damage changes until the devs know what to do with grenades.

Not sure what to choose: engineer or thief?

Thieves and engineers are very different classes; I don’t quite understand why you need people to compare them for you.

From what I’ve heard and experienced for myself, thieves have some of the most boring PvE in the game due to their spam-friendly initiative system. However, if you leveled a thief to 15 and didn’t notice that for yourself, it might just be the perfect class for you.

The necromancer may be famously broken, but it’s still a powerful class. As far as Engis are concerned, grenades are IMHO one of the top three dps abilities in the game, and they’re not as easy to dodge in PvP as people are making it out to be. The class needs to have its weaker builds buffed up, but it’s certainly quite powerful right now.

Edit: actually, all I really want for the class is a decent 10% run speed buff that doesn’t require me to spam anything. Downgrading Leg Mods to Adept level would also do the trick.

The FT is arguably superior to a rifle when you’re trying to solo an enemy who blinds you three times a second.

Weapon sets Ranking

I’d push D OH one rank up and switch Scepter with Focus, but that’s based on personal preference. I’d rather have mobility, range, and a good mix of AoE and (weakened) single target damage (S/D) than a defensive build geared for cc and close combat that lacks its best gap closer (D/F). /D builds are always useful, D/ builds can still be messed up.

I want to make a FT engi.

Alright, I’m fired up and ready to get trolled: what advantages does the FT have over bombs and grenades?

Engi Or Ele?

That may be the case, I think though that overall the engineers provide more utility because they do have several very effective damaging builds as well as great support potential. The point I was mainly trying to get across was that grenades are definitely not they only build engineers have to do damage – and if someone isn’t very good at ground targeting, grenades may not even be the best option for them for dps.

With no traits and with standard gear, grenade damage is almost double that of the next best ranged “kit” (rifle). And unless I’m very much mistaken, explosives actually improve better with traits than the non-explosive kits do (partially because of the raw Power bonus, partially because the extra grenade, extra range, extra radius and extra status effects make a huge difference) .

You’d have to be really, really bad at lobbing grenades not to see at least a 50% damage increase compared to your normal weapons.
My problem with the kit is that I feel absolutely compelled to use it as much as possible because it kills things so much faster, even though I hate mashing the “1” button twice a second. If I use another kit, I feel like I’m heavily crippling myself.

Engineers have more than one viable build, viable is a stupid word.

Good lord I could not agree more. Folks love to claim builds are not viable, even though hundreds of folks thrive using them every day.

Viable is a nice word, sorry to burst your linguistic bubble. And while engineers don’t have exactly one single viable build, they’re much more limited than Eles in what they can accomplish offensively. I’m not talking about support or healing, mind you.

It would have been pretty easy to implement a few warrior weapons that heavily rely on combos to inflict maximum damage or achieve maximum protection for soloing. Instead, the devs went for something much more simplistic.

For the record, I think Eles, Mesmers and Guardians offer the best combination of power and entertainment right now.

Engi Or Ele?

Eles have more than one viable build; that tends to make them more popular than Engis, who have so many balance issues that grenades and bombs (the two most annoying to use weapons in the entire game) vastly outrank their normal weapons.

You should consider Engi more closely if you wanted to play a primary support class, but I figure you wouldn’t have asked about Eles in that case.

I’d love it if I didn’t have pointless/redundant traps as a thief.
I’d love it if ranger wasn’t so underpowered.
I’d love it if Warrior wasn’t so boring, and simple.
I’d love it if Necro didn’t have so many bugs.
I’d love it if my Mesmer had decent AoE for PvE.
I’d love it if my Guardian had a weapon that was decent at range.
I’d love it if my Elementalist wasn’t forced into extremely specific trait lines, and builds.

This is a good post.

I’d love it if Thieves had more viable weapon combos.
I’d love it if Mesmer mantras would auto-prepare when I leave combat.
I’d love it if Guardians had more offensive traits that really changed something about their gameplay.

Oh come on. Of course you can use grenades in WvW, they’re still extremely powerful if you can hit with them.

Warrior Sniper Vs. Engie Sniper

in Engineer

Ploppy.2917

Two things:

- Engineers are supposed to use kits to compensate for their perceived shortcomings. You’re not using any kits.

- Warriors are supposed to be a high-DPS, high survivability class. Engineers are supposed to be a high flexibility class with more than two or three strengths.

Weapon Kits

People can have very different opinions about engineer kits, to the point where I’d recommend spending 10 minutes of your time making a test character and heading to the mists instead of trying to make sense of all the conflicting opioins.

For instance, both grenades and bombs are excellent high damage kits whose utility to a given player depends entirely on his or her ability to lead targets/run cricles and spirals around monsters in melee range.

Engineer vs Elementalist

Both classes meet your needs in different ways. Elementalists have both the highest number of weapon skills and the highest number of total skills: 20 weapon skills, a healing skill, and between 4-20 (depending on whether you use summoned weapons) extra skills through utilities. The water skills are generally quite good at healing too.

Engineers are a lot more limited that that, but their skills are generally more versatile. If you like inflicting a broad array of conditions and buffing allies, you’ll be better of with an Engi.

If it’s complexity you’re after, Eles are more demanding than engineers: to be at peak efficiency, you need to swap between elements constantly. Moving between AoE/single target/certain boss fights, also need to swap weapons occasionally, which can be a slight pain without the hotkey.

I wouldn’t say that Engis are terribly complex to play; an extra kit is basically just a (very exotic) weapon swap skill with a bonus toolbelt skill. Grenades are also very strong right now, to the point where you can come up with a fairly simple skill layout and skill rotation to max class damage. Their class mechanics may seem a bit unusual at first, but by the endgame I’d consider Engis to be simpler that Eles or Mesmers; about the same level as Necros.

Engis are getting a lot of changes next week, so it’s entirely possible that the less attractive kits will become more competitive; that would make Engis the most versatile class in the game, though their complexity would still mostly derive from choosing the right skills before entering combat. In terms of bucking traditional skill rotations, you can’t really beat an Ele.
