I support this thread (and Valkyriez).
Very nice. A warrior in the right hands can be a beast!
Please tell me how you avoid a teleport skill outside of anticipation.
There will be certain situations where you’re low on health and the opportunistic thief will 1-shot you. It happens to everyone.
That said, most people who play thieves in hot-join (I assume this is where you’re playing or you wouldn’t be asking this question) are usually pretty bad at the prof, so if you see one approaching you and he suddenly disappears, he’s probably just used Steal on you. Dodge (stun-break if necessary) and run away, and lay down an AOE if you can. The AOE just hurt him, and you’ve ruined his opener. He’s now relatively useless for the next 45 seconds.
Instant assumption of my skill level and does not even answer the question. Just read the line and assumed bad… You cannot counter teleport outside of anticipation. What you have listed is reaction. Thank you.
Apologies, I didn’t comprehend your question well enough.
Indeed, anticipation is the only option for instant-cast abilities, but that’s the case with all such things, not just Steal.
Some kind of rewards that are visible/usable in all game modes (read: PVE and PVP) would be nice. They don’t need to affect player stats, but something aesthetic.
I think someone mentioned capes… that’d be awesome if there were capes the indicated PVP “rank”.
I’m not an awesome player, but I figure that I’m above average: to put it in perspective, with my non-cookie-cutter bleed thief, I go into fights against most professions feeling that I’ve got a reasonable chance of victory.
Anyhow, one evening I was in a duel server for a few hours and there was a bunker guardian in there killing everyone he fought. When my chance to fight him came up, we ended up calling it a draw after about 10 minutes: we both always had the cooldowns we needed to prevent the other from winning.
As a Minionmancer Necro, I was in an match where the bunker guardian was beating everyone down. I walked in killed him in less than a minute, and walked away. Necros are the hard counter to guardians and elementalists. The day I lose to one of those would be a first. On the necro forums, not one person has ever commented about having trouble with a guardian.
Now a grenade engineer or a trap monkey/ranger ugh or that crazy p/d theif build ugh, but guardians are almost nothing. The reason more people think the guardian is great is because there are more theives, eles, mesmers, and warriors than any other build. The guardian has great counters to each of those classes, but you ask any ranger, engineer, or necro if they have any issues dispatching a guardian, and not a single one will say even break a sweat against the guardian.
Indeed! I think the game is more balanced than the general population thinks, especially when it comes to particular builds countering others.
That’s not to say that further balancing isn’t needed or that the game is without its issues, but having tried out all the professions to some extent in PVP, the only prof the cries slightly OP to me is the ele.
I’m not going to comment on the rest of the issues at hand here regardless of my opinions, but I’m pretty sure the problem is anticipating what a well-played Thief can do. Not what 90% of the hotjoin population does. I don’t think anyone is advocating we balance based off 90% of the hotjoin performance.
I mean I agree I can dodge most Thief burst too simply by watching the Basilisk go up. What happens when the Thief knows that you watch their buffs, and waits for that dodge to end though? The general assertion that instant attacks are by far to the advantage of the user in terms of accuracy is a sound argument, and to be nitpicked at like this is petty. You cannot react to something that is instant, you can only anticipate. Which is exactly what was said. Sometimes there are clues to use for anticipation, but that’s not always the case and still goes along with what was said.
I think the problem with what you’re asserting lies in your words well-played. If you’re beaten by someone who played they’re profession well then you should just chalk it up to being outplayed. Assuming that two players are at the same skill-level (well-played), then the other person will still be able to set-up a counter to the thief’s opener.
I think the issue most people have is the perceived low skill-to-success ratio that the thief profession offers. What most people don’t realize is that the pay-off of that play-style does not last long, once you start encountering players who have a reasonable idea of how to play their class.
I imagine they had plenty of single condi cleanses to remove the bleeds when they got threatening, and a condi Thief doesn’t have much to cover up the bleed especially since it gets refreshed on the stack so often. Makes sense when I think about it more.
Exactly… it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if thief burst got toned down and we were given more readily stackable condition types.
When I used to play a Condi Warrior, this felt like one of their problems as well. Interesting how I gravitated towards the Engi, which consequently has the best condi-dmg variety in the game.
I’ve also got a Engi that I play a condition build with, but I prefer the play-style that my thief allows me. I’m more of a “control the fight” kind of guy, and I can do that better on my thief.
In hot-joins I trash talk as part of the game within the game. I usually try to tick a few people off and that usually leads to them trying to focus on me rather than on the objective. Whenever they see me they see red and give chase, so I lead them away from the control points and either kill them or keep them tied up long enough for the rest of my team to control the map.
Of course it doesn’t always work out, if for instance my team isn’t focused on playing the objective, but I’ve had reasonable success with it.

Class balance is of course relative, since the typical burst damage Thief cannot deal with a Bunker Guardian alone. Enter the Condi-Burst Engi, Trap Ranger, or Condi Necro though, and that Guardian drops in under 20 seconds.
I see nothing troll about that list mursie, it’s simply your opinion. There is nothing wrong with an opinion as long as you discuss it, the problem is too many people are offended by another opinion on these forums. Taken from what I know as the Thief PoV, it makes sense as well. I am curious how the Condi Thief would work out against a Bunker Guardian though, but this is something I have no experience with.

Energy+Hydromancy on bunker guardian’s weapons <3 Now i dodge and you won’t get me
Pwned
Yay for not understanding sigil mechanics!
So explain me those obscure mechanics you know…it would be really appreciated, because you know hydromancy works great in paids even vs 3 expec thieves, wars and dps eles
2 sigils of the same “type” cannot proc at the same time. Both of the sigils you listed are of the “Weapon Swap” type, and therefore only one will proc and they share the same cooldown.
Really? I was unaware of this… can you cite a source for this info? I’ve been running double weapon-swaps and I’d have sworn that they’re both proccing, but I never paid specific attention to it.
Speaking as a “non-cookie-cutter”, somewhat casual but still serious bleed thief (using the tier definition provided by Defektive):
S) Ele’s: they can drop my bleeds pretty much at will, and heal up as they do so.
S) Mesmers: not sure which build, but I run into some mesmers who can open on me at range and do a tonne of damage. The typical shatter/blurred frenzy mesmers are usually run by derpers and are pretty easy to take down, but the ones who have someone with a brain running them are a big PITA.
A) Rangers: smart rangers can be a pain, no matter the build.
A) Necros: most necros I’ve run into aren’t awesome at constantly removing my bleeds, but some are, and they’re a real challenge.
A) Engineers: bunker engineers take forever to bring down, and the occasional condition engineer has surprised me.
B) Guardians: bunker builds… they don’t beat me, but they don’t die either. We just fight forever because we always have cooldowns available to counter one-another. Damage guardians are usually pretty predictable and go down.
B) Warriors: typically very predictable and easy to counter. I’ve run into a couple of serious warriors who weren’t running cookie-cutter builds that surprised me, though.
C) Thieves: most thieves, burst or bleed, are usually pretty easy game because 90% of them are running cookie-cutter burst or bleed builds, and use a predictable play-style.
We’re here and we’re watching the forums. We’ll keep looking for ideas/suggestions.
We have a lot of other stuff planned, but we’re looking forward to the results from this test!!!
Please please please add new sPVP game modes!
Hi everyone,
I’d like to share with you a site that I’ve had running for several months now, Guild Wars 2 Power Guide.
I have all kinds of content there, including a getting started guide, professions guides, reviews of strategy guides, PVP info, levelling info, links to good GW2 tools, and more.
I try to add content pretty regularly, so be sure to check back.
@MyFe
Several times in this thread you’ve called this build “OP” in a good players hands. I’ll emphasize good player. It’s not OP, you are just being outplayed. Stop calling for nerfs when you just can’t figure out how to beat a playstyle.
I play a thief with the build you describe, and the two professions that I consistently cannot beat are necro’s and ele’s who know how to play their professions. Why? Because they can drop all of my conditions with no problems, and has been mentioned, I can only stealth so much.
Capture the flag would be a good first-step to adding more diversity to sPVP.
FascistMuffin:
Wait for the Dec. 14th patch. They are addressing the slow moving arrows issue in that patch.
I’m fine with BF, honestly. It requires some set-up, and does put a cloth wearer in the thick of melee combat. Plus, it’s pretty easy to counter.
Personally, I’d rather see confusion taken out of the game. There are lots of other conditions in the game, and confusion is a little over-the-top.
