I highly recommend Taugrim’s Legion build for all things. (Though for open world PvE, I equip Feedback, Mantra of Distraction, and Phantasmal Defender. Haven’t done any dungeons yet. :V)
In PvE, you put out so much damage mobs crumble before they can touch you. If the Phantasms’ damage doesn’t down it, shattering them will. Unfortunately, it’s really only viable in 1v1; taking on groups of mobs does not work well.
In PvP everyone spends to much time tabbing through your phantasms and clones that you have ample time to chew through a sizeable portion of their health. Can’t down them? Moa their kitten and spawn more Phantasms.
I use Moa Form in sPvP. Never in a million years would I ever use it when I’m trying to kill someone. It’s fantastic for when you’re on the run and there’s a Thief, Ranger, or Ele that you just can’t shake off.
Moa Form has saved my kitten tons in sPvP from that one Ranger or Thief I just can’t outrun.
I imagine it would be incredibly useless in WvW, though. I’d just use Time Warp and lol while my server chews through everyone else.
You’re considering rerolling when there are three other weapons you can use in your main hand alone.
Bugs aside, the scepter is a pretty bad weapon. Every other weapon except the sword has a phantasm built in, but even then the sword has a 2 or 3 second distortion skill that makes you invincible for that time. The scepter has a shield that only blocks one attack.
Side note: You basically just described the greatsword attack animation.
The only two voice actors I’ve been able to name so far are Liam O’Brien (I squeed when I heard Liam on some random NPC in the Sylvari tutorial.) in various Sylvari NPCs and Felicia Day in Zojja (Admittedly, I only know this because no one would shut up about it for the first few days.). Has anyone identified any others?
Side note: Liam O’Brien needs to become the VA for the male Sylvari PC ASAP.
Thank you for this topic, OP. I needed that laugh.
Because magic.
These are sentient plants magically spawned by a tree somehow and they’re already the size of a full grown person and already know English perfectly and exactly how to do everything, and they share a hivemind Dream.
Also, you’re in a world where some people can summon undead and throw fireballs/bolts of lightning. Because kittening magic.
I would, however, enjoy seeing how Anette says Sylvari work.
Solution to all of your problems: Roll a male Sylvari and make him http://i.imgur.com/pm8gm.gif
Sylvari really can’t do tough. I love my Sylvari’s run animation. But then, he’s also pink with purple hair and a bright pink glow and intentionally girly so I don’t hate him.
First time I saw my Sylvari dance, I laughed so hard. I was in Skype with a friend and he thought I was dying because I eventually reached the point where I stopped breathing and making noise.
Staff + Sword/Pistol and 5 points in Illusions will be your saving grace in all things solo PvE. I’m only level 15, so I only have two utility slots and I use Feedback and Phantasmal Defender. Open with your Warlock and Defender, drop Chaos Field, switch to Sword/Pistol, throw your Duelist, then get up in their faces and DPS away. The sword’s 2 and the pistol’s 5 will save your kitten so many times, especially if you have good timing. My favorite thing to do when ranged mobs use that rapid fire skill is to pop my sword’s 2 and watch them waste it. If your phantasms start dropping, replace them with clones and back off and start using your staff. If your health starts getting low, back off and use your staff. If you’re ever up against a ranged mob and you get low on health, put Feedback on the mob.
This setup has a ton of DPS and can burst down mobs very fast. Ideally, you want to target ranged mobs first since they can’t be kited. A’course, it’s all single target damage, so if your phantasms are on CD when the mob dies, you’ll want to switch to staff and throw down some clones and Chaos Field and put on Chaos Armor, preferably by comboing it with your staff 2 and then using your 4 afterward. Then, it’s just a process of rinse and repeat.
I hardly ever use shatters because the majority of my damage comes from my Phantasms and the less down time those guys have, the more damage I do. I save F1 for finishing off a low health mob, I haven’t used F2 since level 3, and I use F3 and F4 when things start going south and I need to gtfo.
It’s by no means effortless or without hiccups, because Mesmer isn’t really that good at solo PvE. You WILL take damage and may even get downed a few times. But our downed state is awesome, so it’s not that big of a deal. Find a low health mob and you can destroy it and rally in no time.
P.S. This is a modified-for-PvE version of Taugrim’s Legion Mesmer build, found here. http://taugrim.com/2012/09/04/guild-wars-2-pvp-video-legion-mesmer-build/

Since a few days after launch, I’ve been playing around with classes trying to see which one had the most invigorating support builds, or if I would maybe end up breaking the mold and play a different style, but alas I have found myself enamored with a support build once more: support/Elixir Gun Engineer.
I’m a level 22 Engineer, and ever since playing a Chanter in Aion, I’ve loved support classes/builds. I played a main support Rogue (side job Saboteur; good God that was fun) and an off-tank/support Warrior in Rift and a Mystic on Tera.
As a support, you’re…well, terrible—worthless—useless—a complete waste of space if you go in willy nilly with a random team because you can’t communicate well enough to find out who needs support where and blah blah blah, and even if you try, you get ignored or told “just dps”. (Which is a very bad philosophy.) Unfortunately, in this game, there’s not the luxury of having until max level to find and get cozy with a guild since you can start PvPing at any time, which is where my dilemma lies. Having no guild means no support; no support means I’m useless (I’m a terrible DPS, and tanking is boring.); useless means I get disheartened about PvP and want to quit.
I prefer sPvP because that’s where support gets to shine because you’re with a pre-made team. Also because that’s the only place I have all the skills I need to be a proper support. Out in the world while grinding, I run Bombenade DPS because pulling and bursting down 5+ mobs is soooooo much fun, and in WvW I run a vaguely support-y turret/grenade siege build.
So here I am in the guild section of the forums looking for a guild that wants a desperate support Engineer (maybe Ele and Guard in the future, if I ever get back into them) in their guild.
If you want to get in contact with me, shoot me an in game mail to Tievanesk (quick, but moderately reliable) or post here (potentially slow, but reliable since I’ll check back eventually). Or PM Tievanesk (unreliable, but oh god do I answer that provocative pink text fast).
EDIT: P.S. I’m American; central standard time; GMT -6, whatever you want to call it, so take that into consideration. BUT I don’t normally get to get on during the day because of school and/or work, and don’t get to get on until late-ish, sometimes not until nine PM (my time) or later.
EDIT JR.: It actually doesn’t matter what sever, I realize, since I can still server transfer for free! Pity I can’t edit my title to reflect that epiphany.

This is a fairly general question, so I’m sure it’s been asked before.
But.
If you build yourself right, is it possible to be a tank with Earth attunement, or is Earth attunement a “Hey, you’re dying. Use this for some extra survivability so you can gtfo and heal!” sort of thing?
I’ve always wanted a mage tank, and I was disappointed when Trion didn’t release a tank soul for Mages with Storm Legion. So don’t let me down, Forums! Otherwise I’ll have to give you all the cane and no one wants that. ;~;
