Awesome idea but I doubt we’ll ever see it. I’ve never been a big fan of pet microing due to the fact that relying on an AI will NEVER be perfect. Also…why would the “pet loving class” send his beloved companion to constant death <_<
If they did this, they could actually swap the spirit summon utility skills to something far more interesting as well. Maybe like…I don’t know…mobility?
Don’t really have any actual comments on the PvP since I’ve yet to get into it myself but I just find it horribly odd that thieves have a stealth skill that sprouts a freaking tree…Where’s the Ranger equilavent?
Wasnt aware pve had a meta.
It quite obviously did. PvXWiki says hi. I never played with real people so I don’t really care about the opinions of the elitist super awesome GW1 vets. However I do know that Rangers weren’t very popular in PvE speedruns. Didn’t really bother me though. I just ran an effective hero setup (you know, after the 7 hero update) and kept changing builds for fun.
Barrage and Incendiary Arrows minigun builds completely dominated Cantha vanquishing.
Spear Chucker build was fun for certain missions and lower populated VQ areas where you only had like 3 heroes available.
Dagger Spam with Splinter Weapon buff for pretty much everything else.
The point is (since this is GW2 forum and not GW1 forum) that GW1 Ranger seemed to have so much more going on for them. Expertise was a lovely attribute. In GW2 our attribute is a semi-handicapped pet. I like having the pet around but the system still needs work. It’s far more tolerable now than in the betas but it’s still not on par with the mechanic of other classes. The utilities and mobility could use some work too as I said. They also need to figure out what they really want to do with the spirits. The Greatsword spirit build in betas was insanely fun but people cried OP and it got trashed. And now people use spirits…for what exactly?
I do wish they would fix the feature. Pets have no personality to them when the names don’t matter. I had 3 monkeys in WoW:
Wadisit
Wadisithea
Wadisitinhea
:)
The game doesn’t have a sub. Just try it. This isn’t WoW. I played a Feral for 5 years. Too bad for me since GW2 doesn’t have a feral. I’ve rolled over the different classes a LOT. I’ve decided to stick with the ranger since it’s the nature oriented class and melee builds can be fun for it. Right now I’d just take it easy and wait for a ranger patch though.
Odd, last time I quit bow builds were all the rage in pve, barrage + splinter wep kitten
If you liked using Barrage Splinter yes. I was never a fan of it and I played with heroes so mobbing up didn’t quite work the way it was supposed to. I did use this hilarious Incendiary Arrows build for vanquishing also. However, for more brainless and relaxed AoE spam, Dagger spam worked better majority of the time and with very fast attack speed to boot. It wasn’t quite the real ranger though.
Apples and oranges I guess. Besides, Barrage was hardly a meta after all the effing Spirit Spam rits, Sin tanks and the new and improved Mesmer.
as much as I wanted this feature implemented haha. I’m afraid this will make all the thieves out there qq and rage quit the game. Yup, I’m serious XD
Do we really need that many Thieves in the game to begin with? Thief was fun and acrobatic when I played it but I just couldn’t stand playing the FotM. Ranger is supposed to be an outdoor survivalist…did they suddenly loose their ability to track…anything?
WoW Hunters were trackers. Literally. They could actually see humanoids and beasts on their minimap, depending on which tracking skill you had activated.
GW2 Rangers can’t track anything. We’re not trackers. We’re gimped archers with pets dragged from the special animal olympics.
Exactly. I played mostly Hunter and Feral and the ability to track people was in no way OP. Tactical advantage perhaps but you still needed a brain and some skill to win. And hunters were the only ones who could track hidden. Rogues could still sap you a mile away though. And WoW rogues rely on PERMA stealth.
Imagine the added gameplay element if you have Rangers in PvP calling incomings on Thieves…
My GW1 Ranger was my main. Bow builds were a bit underwhelming in PvE so I often ran a Spear Chucker with pet or a Dagger Ranger. In PvP bows were a blast. There was also the awesome Spirit Spammer build I used to farm UW with.
Now the GW2 Ranger…yeah bows are still there and they are pretty great. Altough Long Bow feels a tad clumsy compared to betas. And there are so few interrupts…skilled rupt Rangers were freaking insane in GW1.
Melee Ranger could be better at least in some manner. Sword locks you in place and Great Sword ain’t as awesome anymore since the spirit build got killed.
Pets…well they are deeper than in GW1 but I’m not a 100% fan of the system. I used to collect pets for skins (Jingle Bear ftw) but now I’m forced to choose a certain pet for certain situations. Why did I farm all the HoM points for a Black Moa when I never use it? And why does the beautiful alpine wolf have a freaking chill breath? Why am I forced to use kitten Drake Hound or a bland gray Wolf? At least I can name my Drake Houn “Ben” and feel a little less kitten
The utilities are a bit underwhelming as well…
Natural Stride, Storm Chaser, Zojun’s Haste and Escape how I miss thee. Yes we have a run speed increasing signet but how many people actually use this in PvP? And correct me if I’m wrong but do we have ANYTHING that even resembles Apply Poison? Stacking poison and burning was sooooo delicious.
Edit: The thing I’d like to see in the GW2 Ranger is some form of added acrobatics. Engineer jumps around with it’s rifle and bombs and stuff and a thief rolls around like a carosel but the Ranger feels like it’s just thrumbing about with next to 0% mobility. I always imagined Rangers to be mobile and agile…

- Fox
- More wolves (tying skills to fur colors is lame)
- If not more wolves then new dogs (1 single breed of dog? come on)
- Raptor
- Owl griffon
I really don’t get posts like this. Bye and good riddance? I haven’t been playing the game myself because I’m waiting to see what they do with the Ranger. I want to play nature oriented characters and right now the Ranger is falling short. But it’s not like this game has a sub fee so stop acting up like a drama queen.
I concentrate on my art, play Okami. And once I’m done with Okami, I’, going to try some other game. Maybe after all that time, ANet has their patch ready. Would you rather have patching like in WoW where they might completely change the gameplay of your beloved class and mainstread it into kittenness 1-2-3?
I’ve been running around with a Sword/Torch and Greatsword build and even if I can usually kill mobs with ease, there are a couple of issues which sometimes end up in me taking unneccessary damage or even dying when the skill in question doesn’t work:
Illusionary Leap – The range of this skill is…puzzling. 80% of the time it seems to do absolutely nothing unless I’m standing on an enemy’s face. Maybe it’s a l2p issue but I don’t understand how I can use this as a reliable gap closer.
Phantasmal Mage – Tooltip for this skill sounds absolutely lovely…in theory. However I’ve only seen the illusion actually appear only twice (killed the minute it’s spawned??) and had the retaliation on me once when I was standing on top of the illusion.
Feedback – This skill is awesome! But sometimes when targeting a ranged mob and they’re running around with their buggy pathing, the bubble sometimes appears inside a wall.
Other than that I haven’t really ran into any gamebreaking bugs other than mob behavior. I was trying to do an event alone because there was no one around in the early morning but it was proven to be quite impossible because even if I tried to use my GS to pull singular mobs, I would suddenly get swamped by mobs who were a mile away. And when I tried to pick them off one by one, some of them would run all the way back to their spawn spot, regenerating health and then after a while, run back again and swamp me again when I though I was safe. Highly annoying and buggy. This takes a rather nasty hit at situations where you need to solo, no matter how skilled the player is.
