The simplistic way that warriors and guardians are often distinguished from one another is that warriors are about raw damage whilst guardians are about survivability and support. Guardians are not purely defensive, nor are warriors purely offensive, but it’s a reasonably straightforward way to differentiate the two.

Suggestions for this 'general' PvE build

I’ve gotten my guardian to 80 and have been running 0/15/30/20/5 with randomly-acquired gear (i.e. nothing has been optimized for my particular build.) While I like this trait distribution, and will probably tweak it, I’ve been messing with the idea of trying out something a little more different – a 0/0/30/15/25 that uses ‘Power of the Virtuous’ (25 in virtues) paired with a set of Lyssa runes to try and use boons offensively (and defensively, via AH.)

I’m at a loss for gear, and whether or not the particular combination I’ve dropped in gives decent stats. I’m not a big numbers guy; my guildies turned me on to the site, so I’ve been paying closer attention to how stats change depending on loadouts.

I basically started the build with the traits and runes, but am not sure what other ‘anchor’ items I should consider dropping in.

Any advice is appreciated.

Shield vs. focus?

I prefer Mace/Shield when running +Boon Duration for perma-Protection. I like to pair Focus with Scepter as the blocks are very nice in a ranged situation. Both are good and have their place.

Same – these are the two pairings I use; I’ve grown to really love the knock back/interrupt on the shield, I just wish it had a slightly shorter CD.

Sigil of Blood and Sigil of Life synergy?

A guild member crafted my first exotic for me, yesterday, and I ended up putting a Superior Sigil of Blood on it (30% chance of stealing health on crit, 2s CD – 453 pts + 1 pt per 20 Healing Power)

While looking for Sigil for my shield, I noticed the Sigil of Life (+7 Healing Power per kill, etc. etc., ends on down.)

Would the increased Healing Skill from the Sigil of Life increase (minutely) the health stealing ability of the Blood sigil? I haven’t read anything about how the ‘+x per kill’ mechanic might work or be limited in relation to other effects.

Caudecus' Manor dungeon - help!

Love all the ‘experienced only’ and even the ‘no noobs’ comments in some of those, seems a place to go to meet friendly people.

Seems GW2 has the typical level-cap player attitude in abundance, reminds me of the BG site used by FFXI players.

It’s kind of inevitable, but I don’t think that it’s particularly more prevalent on the LFG site than in-game; I actually found a great group for my first run-through of AC, there, and they’re now all on my friends list. Frankly, if I see anything that smacks of that kind of selectivity (i.e. exp. only, etc.) I look elsewhere. I’m pretty sure Historian Symon isn’t going anywhere, and I play this game for fun, not as a second job; I can wait for a group where people are going to be pleasant, or, God forbid, relaxed.

Caudecus' Manor dungeon - help!

Second to the suggestion about gw2lfg.com – use the group tags to designate yourself as a new player to the area and when you’re in party chat before entering, make sure that your party is aware. You want to make sure your group is OK with this and that they’ll take steps to make sure you don’t get lost, etc.

Very often, you’ll be part of a party across different servers, which means you won’t see them in Queensdale (unless they’re on your server,) but they should be visible on your map once you enter the dungeon instance.

Caudecus Manor can be a bit tough because there are lots of ‘tricks’ or exploits people use when moving through it (done for the sake of speed, which means nobody will explain it to you as it’s being done,) and the close quarters inside the manor itself mean you can walk into something bad before you see that it’s there.

It also helps to watch/read some of the online guides, at least for the explorable paths. I just finished acquiring armor from CM (which means I basically played explorable about 23 times to gather the necessary tokens,) so I’m fairly familiar with it. Feel free to ask me in-game, my primary is ‘Joan Of Argh’

General gear suggestions for my PvE build

A disclaimer: I’m a parent, and so basically as casual a player as they come. That being said, I do enjoy tinkering with my build/loadout, but I lack the time/inclination to really delve into stats, etc. I play PvE almost exclusively, and lately have been doing a lot of (not so smooth) dungeon runs.

I currently have prec/power/cond. dmg Caudecus Manor armor, and use a mace/shield and scepter/focus, all of which are level 80 yellows I found with random sigils. My build is a 0/15/30/20/5 AH build:

My accessories are all lower-level found items, and those are the ones I’m most keen on replacing with something a little more appropriate. I think my build is heavily defensive(?) – would going with +power items (like the 42K temple of grenth stuff) be a good way to go, or should I stack on more defense? I know this is all kind of vague, sorry.

Access to NPC armor

In my eternal hunt for purdier armor skins, I’ve spent a fair amount of time checking out NPC’s gear; typically, they’re often wearing cleverly re-colored combinations of different sets, but I’ve found a few wearing a really nice set of plausible (i.e. doesn’t look like a stripper in gladiator costume) heavy armor that I wanted to procure.

It’s Caudecus’ Manor armor; great, I’m set-

Oh, wait, it’s not. CM armor is re-skinned to look like someone ran over the armor in their Escalade; 1380 tokens gets me that? Not shiny? What??

Yeah, not a game-breaking issue, it does nothing to ‘improve the experience.’ But obviously the assets are in place, so can Anet just put them to use? I know some people like the tarnished look, so I’m not suggesting an outright skin swap, but I also know that I can count the times on one hand that I’ve seen someone running in CM heavy armor, so maybe offering a ‘clean’ skin for the armor might make it more palatable to wider audience. I’m assuming their are other sets of armor with multiple skins; maybe a gem store item (similar to a transmutation stone, etc.) that lets one ‘flip’ the skin of the armor set?

Morningstar hit the nail on the head (I haven’t figured out how to quote his/her post, so I’ll just refer to it.)

My reaction to GW2 (as seen through the eyes of a GW player) has generally been disappointment. Whatever. I’d be interested in an honest and open-minded debate about the design decisions that lead to me feeling that way, but I don’t see that happening on internet forums; I’ve been around long enough to know better, just like I know the core game mechanics of GW2 will not change, no matter how many complaint posts appear.

But I haven’t been playing long, and when I’m in-game, I’m there to play the game, warts and all, not stand around near a waypoint and gripe. I’m guessing there are plenty of ambivalent players out there, but I doubt many of them think that in-game is the place to voice their misgivings.

And to echo other’s sentiments, but perhaps more strongly, you shouldn’t accept anything you read on an internet game forum as remotely close to fact. If you like the game, that’s good; if you don’t (unless it’s due to a pervasive bug,) then you suffered from not having a demo available and will probably smart at the expenditure of funds. I think everyone would be better off if they were less concerned about what the ‘community’ (and I think that’s a dodgy concept, at best) thought of the game and just played or didn’t play it as they saw fit.

What are the best laptops for those who doesn't have much budget?

I think you’re asking for too much – generally with laptops, you pay a premium for something that handles high-res gaming. At your price point, I think you need to set your sights lower; there are machines that can game, but not at high resolutions. Off the top of my head, there’s the Acer Timeline M3, which is a 15" ultrabook with a decent Nvidia GPU, and there’s the Alienware laptop (can’t recall the name) that’s a smaller form factor (like 12-13" iirc.) One of the smaller companies, like Sager, has crammed a fairly powerful GPU into a smaller laptop chassis, although I believe it’s heavy, hot, and has so-so battery life (which would be typical for ‘gaming’ laptops.)

You’re not going to find a laptop that drives games at high-res for that amount, I think; most dedicated gaming laptops are pricey and usually in the 15"-17" screen size range, which I’ve found a PITA to drag around if you’re really mobile. I would look at the 1366×768 resolution machines (like the Timeline.) Playing at a lower native res with a decent framerate is, IMHO, better than a stuttery high-res experience.

An Argument Against Balanced Classes

It seems that the ‘balancing’ of classes in GW2 PVE comes out of the dev’s desire to escape the MMO Holy Trinity; whether or not the ability to solo the entire game is a result of making each class ‘self-sufficient’ or one of the reasons it was implemented, I don’t know (but am curious.)

I can understand a desire to escape the tank/healer/damage dealer, but GW2 feels a little divided between a “let’s all play together!” philosophy driven by XP/resource sharing, etc., and a “ kitten off, I don’t need your stinking synergy!” philosophy that never REQUIRES you to group up, for the most part. Yes, classes can still act as supprt/force multipliers for each other, but it’s not as central to the game as it was in GW.

I can appreciate the desire to leave things up to the players, but I miss teamplay in PVE; there’s no substantial pressure exerted by the structure of the game itself for teamplay (I don’t just mean ganging up, but interlocking actions like in a role-based approach,) it doesn’t happen very often. Whether or not additional content makes it more essential remains to be seen.

37-year-old curmudgeon here; I don’t think it’s your age, just your expectations regarding story, and it’s clear from the posts in this thread that there are plenty of snot-nosed, punk kids who are as skeptical of the story as you are. So, feel some solidarity with the young’uns, and reminisce about better instances of storytelling you’ve encountered. For my part, I expected a predictable, cliched plot, to a certain extent, so I can focus all my disappointment on other things, like no tattoo armor . . .

Another 'Can't decide on a main thread'

I’m fairly new to GW2 (but I played quite a bit of GW) and it sounds to me like you’re maybe too focused on finding a single class or build to consider your primary one. I too feel a little disappointed, so far, with the classes in GW2, but I’d suggest thinking of your characters in terms of specific builds, each with particular strengths and weaknesses, rather than thinking about a single character fulfilling all your desires. I split time fairly evenly between all my characters in GW because each one (and in turn, each particular build/secondary class combo) offered radically different experiences when played, and I anticipate the same thing happening in GW2; after playing a single character to 28, I’m now splitting time between 3.

I named my sylvari ranger ‘The Fighting Side’ because he looked like a really good asparagus dish I had once. I can only assume that ‘Tossed Salad’ is taken and was probably NOT intended to refer to a dish of vegetables.

Tips on partying up for a lonely noob

As a former GW1 player, I am still wracked with ambivalence about GW2; I miss my two-class accidental synergies, my monk, my old guild. However, I have been playing a fair amount since picking the game up (my to my wife’s chagrin,) and am slowly figuring things out for myself.

What I miss most, and what strikes me as most likely to make me stop playing, is the difficulty in finding groups. My highest level character is 28, so I haven’t even considered entering a dungeon, but the open nature of GW2 (no ‘missions’ or other events that require groups,) means I’ve spent most of my time running around alone, occasionally seeing another player, or participating in the brief orgies of violence known as dynamic events.

So, aside from joining a guild (my last guild I joined after meeting some members as part of a UW expedition,) where’s a good place to find others interested in grouping up? My schedule is fairly erratic, which is why I’d rather find a group AFTER logging in. As much as I’d like to take someone’s name down and plan a meet-up to explore, etc., my 15-month-old tends to derail anything planned too far in advance.

TL;DR – Where’s a good place to find people to roll with?
