PvE: new to thief, looking for advice

So i started a new thief a little while ago and i just hit lvl 60, so i finally have access to all traits. Unfortunately i just cant find a build i’m comfortable with, so i’ve set out to make my own. I know i want to be D/D simply because i find the playstyle much more fun than S/P or P/D. Constantly flipping through the air and dodging around makes me feel so much more involved than just pressing 5 with S/P, and i’m not an amazing fan of any of the ranged option that thief has. I’ve settled on using SB as my secondary set, but i think it’d only see dungeon use.

my current idea for my build is a 25/0/30/0/15 condi build, but it should be able to deal some decent back stabs though might stacking. Also, just by changing the major traits i think it can become a potent venom support/condi with the short bow in dungeons.

The goal here is to just spread as much bleeding as possible, and to a limited extend poison through Steal and Spider Venom. Spider Venom can also be replaced by caltrops, changing the Deadly Arts Master trait to Dagger Training (IX) or Combined Training (X). The Trickery Trait could also be changed to Uncatchable (III) for a source of cripple and further bleeding as well. If Initiative became a problem, i could always forgo either option and take Infiltrator’s Signet. Steal would be used to heal, apply poison, and most importantly regain some initiative so that I can spam Death Blossom more.

The goal here would be to jsut support the team’s DPS via giving the party Venoms and healing, while disabling the enemy. Every time a venom was used, it would give the party 2 stacks of Might from Venomous Strength, Life Steal from Leeching Venoms, and of course the effect of the venom itself (do the venoms the party gets also gain my passives? i.e.: weakening when poisoned?) Meanwhile i’d just lay down Poison Clouds and cluster bombs to further apply bleeds and poisons.

Do you guys have any advice to improve this? This is pretty much all theory for me atm, as i’m not lvl 80 on my thief yet so i cant test it

How do D/D zerk builds work in thief PvE? i imagine that they are good at knocking down single targets, but the lack of AoE worries me. with my current build i’ve been able to consistently handle 4+ mobs for a good amount of time, and i feel like a zerk build would have trouble with anything more than 2.

Regarding Elite skills, which one should i use? With daggers i use Dagger Storm, but i have problems with it. To get the most damage out of it you need to pretty much stand on top of a large group of enemies, but that opens you up to a lot of melee damage, so i often just DB everything to death instead, rather than risk taking too much damage and dying. Thieves guild doesnt seem that amazing either…

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the 40ms patch?

rangers used to attack much faster with short bows due to a “glitch” in the attack animation.

that said, no rangers aren’t fine, have you seen their GS damage? its maybe 5% higher than using a 1h sword. GS were good in pvp way back in beta, but anet nerfed things that affected all classes, and piled on nerfs directly at the GS turning it into crap in both PvE and PvP

i think some additional specialized dps elites would be nice tbh. stability is only really helpful for when you are in melee and out of endurance, while the might stacking is only good for when you have a pet-heavy trait spec. because pets attack slow as hell so you’ll only get 8 instances of might on yourself at most. Both of those aspects make the one dps elite have an extreme cooldown whereas Signet of Rage has a 1min cooldown and the buffs lasts half of that.

i would like it if the cost for waypoints was based on shortest path rather than radial distance from the waypoint.

if you think they got rid of fetch quests you have a veil over your eyes. all they did was dress the old questing method in a slightly more acceptable manner. Also that wouldn’t be easy to code, at least in a way that didnt tax the system too heavily. having the servers compute the behavior of every mob as they spawn as thousands of mobs are dying/respawning at any given moment would strain the servers tremendously

@ nels the game rly isnt balanced, and anet knows it which is why they’re working on it.

also anyone who played gw1 and looked forward to gw2 with any serious interest knew that there wasnt dual classing.

your complaint stems from your lack of research before you bought a product.

that said i would like some variance in weapon skills like the ability to change the condition applied like a ranger applying vulnerability on flanking shots with the sbow instead of bleed. to remove a dependance on condition damage. or maybe apply poison to reduce healing at the cost of dps.

@Braxxis its because of stability. makes you immune to a lot of CC, that said, as a ranged char i’m not hit by a lot of CC because i can see it coming so i’d like a change. Also, signet of stone is amazing when you get the trait so that it effects you as well. 5 sec of invulnerability? yes please.

My issue with rangers is just an issue with the game as a whole. Flat dmg is currently better than condition damage. And rangers for the most part are heavily reliant on their condition dmg.

Rangers rely heavily on their trait bonuses, so variety isnt great until you can open up the trait paths more

that said i’m lvl 41 and i find it entertaining enough. once you get the ability for arrow piercing combat becomes much more positioning heavy.

Pet's shouts always effect owner

It’s simple, rangers can out-range the radius that their pet can grant boons with their pet skill. It’s happened do me a lot where i was outside the radius and ended up not getting Fury from my Red Moa. This is especially annoying because we aren’t given a concrete range as to how far the shout effects unlike GW1.

What I propose is simple, whenever a ranger commands their pet to use a skill that would grant boons/remove conds in an area have it always effect the ranger who used it.

You are applying “human constraints” to a race that isn’t human.

Yeah sure, the Grove might look small, but all the other cities are hundreds of years old (even Lion’s Arch is almost hundred). The Grove is 25 and was built with limited knowledge of architecture that could have been barely applied to plants anyway.

LA is way more that 100yrs old. It was the capital of Kryta in GW1 and had been for hundred of years, ever since the White Mantle had taken control, until the events of GW1: Prophecies cast them out.

other than that, yes, they Sylvari have only been around for 25 years, their population is much smaller than that of the other races. City growth correlates to the population of that city.

the only change i think would be good for blind is that if multiple blinds hit they don’t stack the duration, but the number of attacks missed

the bleed from the warrior longbow is him critting and having at least 5 points in the arms trait line. has a 33% chance to cause bleeds on crit

Double Death Caused by Vengence

Wars can use Vengence to temporarily recover from a downed state, but if they go down while in this state they go straight to a death state. This is reasonable. However, if said warrior immediately warps to a waypoint when they reached the death state he/she should lose the Vengance countdown, but that doesn’t happen. This means that if we die in Vengance from mob damage and not the countdown, then immediately respawn to get back into the fight, we die AGAIN. Costing us double for repairs.

Seeing things like Skill Activation/Channel times on our skills would help a lot.

Trait bonuses need to be more detailed. “Chance to bleed on crit” doesn’t really tell much. What is the pro chance? how long is the bleed? how much will the bleed damage be? this kind of information is needed for build creation and theorycrafting.

I’m not personally colorblind, but i’m sure a lot of red-green colorblind people would appreciate it if you could switch it to yellow-blue on things like hp bars, the “in-range” indicators, and various other UI bits and pieces.

I run through Orr relatively easily so idk what you’re talking about. fought a pack of 6 mobs and 2 veteran mobs solo pretty easily. Dodging helps.

Also, find a guild. This game revolves around community interaction.

I remember way back before the betas they said guild halls would be more like guild towns. where a guild would get an instanced town and each member would have a house. but this was WAY back.

Fully Rebindable Keys

There are a lot of keys that I and I’m sure many others would like to change. I immediately turned off ‘double-tap to dodge.’ First because it limited my directions in which I could dodge to 4 and second because it would cause me to roll when i was doing fine tuning movements to include more enemies in weapon swings or a mob had taken stutter steps. Dodge, however, is essential to surviving this game, so I had to map the key somewhere. Any key that I would have to move fingers from the WASD position would cause my first issue all over agian, so I am limited to keys on my thumb or pinky. Hitting keys with precision with my thumb is nigh impossible, leaving my pinky with Ctrl, L.Shift, Caps Lock, or Tab. Caps lock is Caps lock and causes issues whenever i’m typing, and tab is too awkward to reach with my hands. this leaves crtl and shift as my best options, I went with shift as it had the easiest reach.

This choice however comes with a variety of issues. Shift is a modifier key for a variety of things, indirect linking (posting items without immediate sending), stack splitting, etc., etc. so now i have to roll in order to do any of these things. I would like to change all those key-binds, but lo-and-behold none of these keys are re-bindable.

Please allow us to rebind all of our keys.
