It feels like Berserker 2.0. It follows the same concept of risking self-harm to deal tons of burst damage. Don’t get me wrong though— I like the holo’s damage output and it makes for exciting gameplay to time the burst. I just don’t feel like an engineer on a conceptual level anymore and instead a warrior turned greasemonkey with hard light technology.

The IRL lawyer in me wants to get a few things straightened, especially the implied feelings of entitlements growing here.

Nothing in the Conduct Breaches Outcomes, User Agreement, or any legal documentation ever states that Anet owes us a duty to rationalize or otherwise prove up their punishments. Attack this at whatever angle you all wish, but the bottom line is it’s all futile discussion because we’re not entitled to the evidence. Heck, every response to ban appeals I’ve read since launch on these forums and the subreddit included nothing more than cursory explanations. What is going to make anyone here today think that raising a valid issue about the lack of evidence will get anywhere?

Regarding the “witch hunt,” the only innocent victims of said hunt are the rest of Ethereal Guardians who are in no way involved with this matter, and yet reportedly harassed as though the entire guild participated in a conspiracy. I’ve spoken with several friends in EG who are still taunted about it to this day.

Next logical question: “won’t they just play on alt accounts behind seven proxies?” Better yet, “won’t they just play on alt accounts at a free wifi area like Starbucks or McDonalds?”

ranked horror story share time

Everyone here has just about covered a majority of my horror stories, so I’ll offer one with a happier’ish twist.

In a Foefire matchup, both teams locked in mirror comps and we had nothing but intense team fights for the first 100 points. Then, our druid disconnected. We played on until the druid came back, but the other team’s thief disconnected almost right after. This turned out to be the entire match as both teams traded disconnects with a total of 5 players, while staying within 50 points from each other. Our team pushed lord at 350, but lost the druid again right after starting the fight.

In the end, our team won by 12 points. I’d like to say it was a close match, but that’s a sore spot when the whole match was a roller coaster of anxiety with all the disconnects.

Let's talk about the Med Kit

in Engineer

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

Hiya fellow engineers. I see many great ideas for new kits and weapons, so I want us to add our forgotten utilities into the conversation. Please keep in mind that this post has a particular focus on PvP, but surely other players can apply their experiences from other game modes into the discussion. With that, let’s get down to business about the Med Kit.

What’s wrong about it?

  • Bandage Self is objectively the weakest primary self-healing of the profession (besides AED, which is a topic for another day) with the lowest total healing, no boons and no cleanses. The kit skills were probably intended to cover for the low healing, but refer to their clunky uses below.
  • Med Blaster fails to balance the cost to use it. The total output for 1.25s casting is between 319 to 352 (assuming the typical friendly has between 2 and 5 boons and not including Health Insurance from the Alchemy tree). Engis lose all dps to perform this meager heal. We achieve relatively the same result without losing dps with Super Elixir and Healing Turret.
  • The critical flaw of the kit is the clunky throw skills. The casting animation, travel time, and pick-up items feel awkward and potentially disastrous because any unintended friendly players, pets and minions could pick them up. The kit demands extra, tedious communication to either tell players off from using your pickups or have the people who need them go on an “ooo-piece-of-candy” tour.
  • The kit also suffers from the extra effort needed for minimal cleanses. #2, 3 and 4 cleanses only one condition of each category that they cover in a meta that readily stacks every condition of every category. #5 has the best counter-condition mechanic, but on an unreasonably high cooldown and resistance duration that’s too low.

Is there anything good about it?
It’s probably impossible to defend the kit’s practical uses, but #2 and #5 have the best designs that suffer from poor implementation. #2 bypasses the first-applied-first-cleansed rule, which is an effective way to deal with condition builds that apply damage conditions in the middle of “cover” conditions (i.e. 20 bleed stacks sandwiched by cripple, poison, chill, vulnerability, etc.). #5 has a simple and effective design as mentioned above, but its cooldown, clunky throw mechanic and potential for friendlies to steal pickups makes it too awkward to use.

How would you design it?
That’s the big question I wanted to ask you all after discussing the kit’s flaws. I’d buff its focus on team boons and cleansing while making the kit smoother and more streamlined to use. Perhaps #1 could apply debilitating conditions like vulnerability, weakness or chill for enemies caught in the blast. I also want to synergize #2 through 5 with the alchemy tree to benefit from traits like HGH, Alchemical Tinctures and Inversion Enzyme, or if the people want to keep the throw mechanic, then synergize the skills with the explosives tree to create alchemical grenades that damage enemies and heals friendlies in the blast.

As a final word, I believe the kit is in such a poor state that there is limitless potential for its redesign. Thanks for reading and I look forward to everyone’s input.

tl;dr Med Kit is in a bad shape. Too awkward to use and lacks competitive usage.

Revert Moa nerf

in PvP

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

You are missing that Elixir is AoE. 180 seconds vs 96 is a verryyy large margin. Elixir can make more clutch moments in a single game than moa. Resses, Stomps. The nerf to moa was super brainless.

You know whats more brainless, giving engie an AoE moa on a way lower cooldown.

I’m glad you picked up on that.

Toss Elixir X’s AoE potential is only as good as succeeding in the toss. For example, I use Defense Field to negate Toss Elixir X attempts, and eles typically cast Swirling Winds just before attempting reses.

Furthermore when a character is transformed after initiating the res or stomp it will not interrupt either one.

At least with SoH the reser or stomper has to take 3s more of a calculated risk without access to invulns/stabilities/etc.

Revert Moa nerf

in PvP

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

Moa is still very strong. 10 sec moa was just way to OP.
This is a good balance change.

On 180cd.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Toss_Elixir_X
Aoe, no tell and on 96cd. Balanced.

I understand your passion on this topic, so I ask you work with me in getting to the big picture of this nerf.

I argue Toss Elixir X should be inferior to SoH because of the following:

  • Projectile-based: susceptible to reflects and projectile nullification and the risk is proportional to distance from the target.
  • 3s duration: the victim can use #5, #2, and one dodge to kite and mitigate potential burst for nearly the full duration.
  • 96s cooldown: comprehensively, Toss Elixir X has a 192s cooldown to get 6s of effect. The immediate counter argument here is an engi has two opportunities to moa. The problem there is 3s against a competent victim who can kite is too short to take advantage.

That last point is important. I think us PvPers generally agree that moa is a kill setup elite. It is meant to ensure a low health target goes down and the perfect example is a <20% hp, 100% shroud necro. The blessing of SoH is twice the window of opportunity compared to Toss Elixir X to burst and down the target. Additionally, CS expands the window if your team was not coordinated enough in the first attempt.

Losing four seconds in that window is significant, but everyone else will still respect it. In the grand scheme I can’t imagine mesmers subbing out SoH. I think the change did not alter the intent and dynamic of the skill because the most opportune moment to pop this elite is against a low health target; only now even lower.

New Engi icon

in Engineer

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

I’d settle with a gear/cog icon

  1. It is consistent with the Scrapper’s circular icon (which happens to look like a sawblade)
  2. It is consistent with tracing the roots of the profession from the Charr iron legion
  3. Our present icon appeals more for demolitions/Crazy Ivan profession
  4. A gear/cog represents the engineer’s ability to set smaller components into motion towards a greater result
(or stated another way, a gear/cog represents the clockwork nature of our profession; we must use our many tools and kits at once to achieve a goal, or else we do not work)

Isn’t the cog taken by the charr racial symbol? I think that’s why they didn’t make Druid a leaf symbol to avoid comparison to the sylvari racial symbol.

The charr racial symbol is essentially a gear inside of a gear; however, I don’t think it should prevent a variation of the same circular theme or else preclude the cog as a profession icon. To me, something like a wrench turning the center of a cog would represent the class better than our present icon.

I think your point about the druid symbol is correct to a degree because the icon also conflicts with the vigor boon, which actually is a leaf. I’d argue the devs did not go with a leaf icon for druids because it does not capture the concept of a druid, which focuses more on the mystical properties of light, hence their sun and moon icon.

Quite the adrenaline packed montage, especially when played at 2x speed. Those were some good fights.

The only thing that bothered me was you did not use your rifle turret (while surprise shot was on cooldown) to blast water fields from either healing turret OC or F1. You at least tried to in the last fight, but did not get it off in time.

Also if those two points in explosives happened to be in Accelerant-Packed Turrets, you could have used both turrets for a nice little knockback setup into prybar during melee encounters (especially against the thief).

[PvP] Flamethrower Celestial Rifle & variants

in Engineer

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

First of all thanks for the input and the opportunity to theorize with you all!

I tested the potentially very strong f skill from flame thrower, with your setup though, even classes with very weak active condition cleanses can get rid of the burning very fast which then takes the synergy of flame legion runes. Maybe you should get a cover condition sigil because the applied conditions lack their effectiveness in covering for fire which obviously is key.

You’re right because since I’m relying on one condition has given me issues when facing Signet of Renewal and Signet of Water (plus too many low cooldown cleanses to list). I’d list the possible burning applications, but that’s a mouthful. Knowing that, I have to pay closer attention in future matches to see if this really is the case where applying burns will be impossible on melee targets to about 600 range.

Anyway, I appreciate you trying to shift the meta, flamethrower has its places in hot joins but unfortunately I got very unlucky with it in ranked games.

That’s very interesting. I am guilty of devoting >90% of matches in unranked and probably don’t have a credible opinion on tracking the build’s ranked match performance. I’ll try to record some gameplay in ranked matches and update the first post for critique.

And btw, why is flame wall so crappy. A nice firefield like ele’s staff skill would be so much more awesome to justify the freaking name of the kit at least

I feel you man. Sometimes it gets wonky to blast FT#2 in that field with all the camera business without an active target. As Gaaroth mentioned below it would be a nice change to shoot a circular field similar to Flame Turret’s toolbelt, but I’d be accused of copying and pasting skills!

BTW the only thing the FT needs is a ground targetting #2 (because in current state is so weird to aim correctly)

I’m probably biased against the idea because I’ve gotten used to it (as long as I have an active target!). Can’t discredit the idea though because… well why not? It’s a good idea regardless.

I’d take Generosity over Leeching to get rid of those pesky with FT#1 (easy to proc even currently with nades)

Good idea. I tend to forget engis have relatively poor self-cleansing, so Generosity will help. I’ll give it shot for a round of matches.

Thiefs, warriors and other melee classes wouldn’t let you hit them with #1 and #2. Using nades or bombs allows you to kite them, while doing damage, ft does not.

That’s got me a little curious about the role of thieves, wars, and other melee classes. I don’t think there’s an issue of them letting me get hits with FT#1 because it does low damage and their damage output is in melee. FT#1 has a special role to make any classes hiding behind obstacles, reflect walls and bubbles feel insecure. Also against thieves it is useful to spray the area while popping Incendiary Ammo for a chance at blindly applying burn. Also, melee builds end up doing the work for me in setting up FT#2. The projectile doesn’t track and is pretty darn slow, but that’s usually not an issue when targets try bashing my face in (or backstabbing).

Good point on FT’s lack of kite-and-damage capability. Unfortunately the only (awkward) setup is look at target for a split second, send out FT#2, and lay down FT#4. Definitely not as efficient as bombs and nades.

Also you loose good amount of on-point pressure from gk#4 and gk#5 while in team fights.

Another good point here and another big ding on the build; lack of chill and AoE poisons. Grenades seem superior in team fights and point pressure. Regarding on-point pressure, FT tries to make up for it with low cooldown FT#2 explosions and maybe FT#4 on point. FT#3 is a great option for an AoE push. And I guess if all else is failing… FT#1 all the things on point (watch out for retaliation!).

Ps. Thus I’m really tired of running nades in every game mode

One engi to another, brother. I feel you.

I think all-in-all I need to start applying what I learned from you folks into a video and having the good public scrutinize the gameplay. Will work on that!

[PvP] Flamethrower Celestial Rifle & variants

in Engineer

Sean.8921

Still experimenting with the traits, but here’s an explanation for each major decision.

  • Accelerant-Packed Turrets has seen a drop in use since the nerf, but I find its small knockback is a great setup for harder hitting cooldowns like Pry Bar or Jump Shot. It is a blessing against thieves. Well into a fight, I like to stack on a turret and detonate during the thief’s next melee rotation for a second chance at not getting overwhelmed.
  • Incendiary Powder is probably the must-have master trait because it adds to constant fire uptime for nice ticks and the 7% damage boost if running Rune of the Flame Legion.
  • I wrestled with either Hair Trigger or Fireforged Trigger, but went with the latter because it probably adds utility to the kit more so than Hair Trigger does for rifle.
  • Backpack Regenerator is a must-have for the same reason as the current grenades-cele rifle meta. Invigorating Speed/Protection Injection depends on equipment setup as mentioned above.
  • And finally, Speedy Kits is too good to lose especially when slotting Invigorating Speed. Power Wrench is arguably another must-have for lower cooldowns on pulling rotations and a great blocking skill.

Closing thoughts
With the celestial amulet, this build amounts to some hefty sustain. From my experience using this build since last July, the damage output is probably less than optimal, but the take-away is the balance between low cooldown CCs, physical damage, and constant fire damage uptime. Another big disadvantage to this build is range, which Jump Shot and Magnet could help minimize. Since the nerf to might, I’ve been experimenting with the Flame Legion rune setups. So far it has worked well.

I think one of the first questions to be asked is why not pistol/shield? It’s a good question and something I have not tried out yet. I’d imagine it opens up Rune of the Scavenging as a third rune option, but immediate question right afterward is why bring Flamethrower anymore? Grenades with Incendiary Powder would be more appropriate going down that road.

That’s pretty much it for now. I’m interested to read what you all think of the build!

tl;dr Looking for a candid discussion on twisting the current grenade-cele rifle meta, but with FT. Definitely not as much condi pressure, but more focus on balancing physical damage and fire uptime, also adding more to decapping.

Hello everyone! I’m dusting off this old forum account to embrace the excellent PvP discussions going around. A brief history with this build: I’ve used it for a few months and decided this is a good chance to open up conversations about a twist to the current grenades meta and see what fellow engineers think of it.

Build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAElUUpWrlch1LSYLkROuNomISV/YkAA-TZAZAAQZAA
>>3rd utility, runes, and sigils left blank for discussions below<<

Current trial as of March 9, with everything filled in: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAUlUUpWrlcx+KseRCbBNyx0GQNBRuxq8xIEAA-TJRHwAEuAAf2fAwDA4YZAA

3rd Utility: Slick Shoes or Elixir S
—Slick Shoes might be the #1 option for that phenomenal lockdown when pulled off, and Super Speed is no stunbreaker to laugh at.
—Elixir S should be a very close #2 if not equal to Slick Shoes. I like how the utility and toolbelt offers versatility for stunbreaking, stomping, escaping, and reviving.

Runes/Sigils variants
1) Flame Legion/Doom+Leeching (preferably slot Invigorating Speed)
2) Flame Legion/Doom+Energy (if slotting Protection Injection)
3) Hoelbrak/Battle+Energy (if slotting Protection Injection)
4) Hoelbrak/Battle+Leeching (preferably slot Invigorating Speed)
5) Hoelbrak/Battle+Doom (same as #4)
Even after the nerf to might, Hoelbrak/Battle combos still seem viable because of the sixth set bonus.

Build Breakdown
I couldn’t imagine FT’s versatility until finally using it last year.

  • FT#1 is useful for hitting targets taking advantage of LoS, bubbles, and reflect shields since it goes through barriers and isn’t a reflectable “projectile”. The obvious counter is Retaliation, but I think the careful engineer can use other cooldowns or rifle auto until the boon expires. Versus other classes and builds with many blocks and damage nullifiers, the flame jet works great in figuring out when to resume normal rotations. For any other purpose FT#1 is a weak and short-ranged autoattack, so Rifle #1 would be superior then.
  • FT#2 is one extra blast finisher with Healing Turret or FT#4 fire field, and otherwise a low cooldown, hard-hitting skill.
  • FT#3 helps a lot with Rifle#4 to chain knockbacks and decapping nodes. Against thieves attempting Shadow Refuge, I’d cast it in the middle of the circle for a good chance of pushing out and revealing the thief.
  • FT#4 is the go-to fire field, although it’s a relatively thin field that can be hard to work with. At best, the fire wall is great for stacking fire duration when defending points (thieves tend to stand in it for some reason). I also combo it with TK#2 against melee fighters for a touch of condi pressure.
  • A well-timed FT#5 can throw off CC rotations like hammer warriors and updraft from eles. If Elixir S and its toolbelt are down, then another well-timed blind can smoothly stomp classes with no downed-state teleports/invisibility.
  • Finally the Incendiary Ammo toolbelt skill maintains a nice touch of fire damage for longer fights.

I’m going to take a stab and assume a lot of people already know about Tool Kit’s excellent utility, and won’t draw out well-known details. Same deal for rifle skills.

Correct for the most part, but there has been one huge change for me.

The new Scope has been a blessing as a PvE zerker grenadier. Unless there are situations that need stacking (such as Subject Alpha), staying 600 units away to gain extra crit chance has also allowed me to swap for a couple survivability accessories and not lose the ability to stack 25 vuln without food. This was noticeably, incredibly significant during a Fractals-48 run.

I love the Engi-like names. But what would their tags be? and theyre most likely taken

[ENGI]

Simple and with pride.

There is an interesting effect between grenade barrage and the grenade kit’s KR proc. In the screenshot you can see a barrage about to hit the basilisk, but the KR effect also triggered The Predator’s fireball effect. Apparently this only works if I toss a barrage in the air and switch to grenades before I touch down. After some testing I know for sure that grenade kit KR doesn’t trigger the effect by itself.

Legendary Weapon effects & bundles

in Suggestions

Posted by: Sean.8921

Sean.8921

I’m talking about just the passive effects that affect the character, not the weapon specifically. Of course, skill effects would be nice too, but that might be asking for too much. Auras and footsteps while holding a bundle would be enough for me to pursue a legendary.

+1 mate. You aren’t the only one.

I’m happy The Predator received some cool new effects, but between us engineers I am concerned about appearing to spontaneously combust every time we switch from our normal skills to a kit.

Medium armor on Charr.

I tried to go for a steampunk, gunslinger image, but we have to tolerate a few issues with Charr in medium armor, like our tails clipping through some overcoats.

After a while I settled with the threads in the snapshot:

  • Noble mask
  • Rascal shoulders
  • God-temple karma coat
  • CoF token gauntlets
  • Studded pants
  • Noble boots

zerker elitist in COF

You joined a team with “COF farm war zerk only gear check” or mostly something similar without reading carefully.

They aren’t elitist, you were just too lazy to read.

The deal is that my post on lfg.com was this exactly " lvl 80 war speed run path 1" end quote???? If this dungeon wasn’t so (well easy) i wouldn’t have bothered with this.

There’s a difference between “speed run” and “zerker only farm.”

You can “speed run” with any class or team as long as they know what they are doing.

Zerker war only farms require specific class and gear setup.

Oldman didn’t answer an ad. He was recruited from his own lfg.

Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement

in Engineer

Sean.8921

Solution: 1. Allow cosmetic upgrades to hobo sacks available in the gem store (Maybe I can turn my cute quaggan backpack into a grenade bag?).

Take it one step further by changing grenade animations to throwing quaggans and someone will get my lifetime vote for President of Earth.

Only an engineer...

Only an Engineer can drop a set of supplies with pinpoint accuracy…

…in the middle of an underground facility or cave…

…and have all the turrets deploy upright on their tripods.

And only an Engineer can call down an underground artillery barrage. We’re made of win.

We need a new profession icon!

in Engineer

More correctly it would be the icon for the Black Citadel, but the racial capital icons are often referenced as standing for a race.

For example, during Wintersday each race had it’s own snowflake decoration in Lion’s Arch, and the Charr snowflake was based on a gear.

Ah neat. Cheers to learning something new every day. Still though, since the Charr are recognized for pioneering the profession maybe some overlap can be acceptable.

I would say crossed wrenches would be kitten

I’m not saying this is a bad idea, but that’s near the danger zone with the thief icon.

Charr are represented by a gear icon, can’t have the same thing for Engineers.

I didn’t think races actually had their own racial icons. Were you specifically referring to the Iron Legion?

If we can’t have the same for Engineers, then that would be a little disappointing since every engineer’s character creation screen has gears grinding away.

Cool idea OP, and you’ve hit it home because after a few months in dungeons I’ve personally had to deal with teammates saying, “oh thought you were an ele.”

Medkit’s Kit Refinement is an explosion. Either make it a regenerating mist or – gasp! – a blast finisher.

In 99 out of a 100 situations in PvE I totally agree, but since I run CoE a lot the medkit explosion can make a huge difference in bailing myself out of crystal prisons. This is especially appreciated in groups with little experience.

What about Elixir X?

Grenades, bombs, and a wrench. These were the perfect ingredients to make the perfect engineer, but Professor Utonium accidentally added a secret ingredient to the concoction… Elixir X! Baysplosion

Some programming savvy person out there could lay out the RNG shpeel to define X as a set of {EngieSmash, SpinToWin}.
