Now, I admitt I havent read the entire thread, sorry about that. Just wanted to give my opinion on this matter since I am somwhat of a “tabula rasa” (empty sheet, unwritten paper, ect ect) on this matter.
I only started somewhat recently, my main, (and only char) is lvl 72. I have no previous experience with the GW world. Although so far I gotta say when it comes to world/lore wise, they done a damn good job! Finally a fantasy game that creates an original world of their own that got a feeling of depth to it!
Ahem…. anyway. on the subject. Unfortunaly this have almost never since the day I started felt like an mmo.
I always run around solo, the chats are alway pretty much dead, even in Lion’s Arch (which from my understanding so far is considered a gathering point) the chat is really slow.
Sure, during my time leveling I did encounter another players from time to time, but even then “silence” was the trademark for those encounters. No one said a word.
If my memory serves me right I think the most I heard from another player (outside the 1 group I managed to be in since started playing) was "
", this was when I just happend to come across a player who just got downed. I cleared the few low health mobs, got him up, got that reply and we both then ran off.
Now, by no means am saying I wanted a long speech declaring his undying loyalty to me or anything like that, it was a pretty nice way to say “thanks” imo. but meh, so far I havent felt like this is an mmo.
Heh, what? No jokes about a gathering of 5 will hardly make a difference or anything like that? :p
On a bit more serious note though, not sure how much good it will do, I seem to have a knack for picking the gimped class, in WAR just such a protest happened with Magus. We gathered in the Chaos capitol, ran around, lagged up the place a bit, protesting, then after a while commiting collective suicide by jumping of a cliff.
Still we got no love though, doubt the devs even notice such “protests” :p
Have contstant lag issues, Bping did nothing, and got no problem what so ever in other games.
Getting a bit frustrating that 8 out of 10 times I die its due to lag, either I press the heal skill over and over and it just flashes but nothing happens, or all the mobs run off to where the server think I (faaar away from the actual fight) and kill me while I cant touch them.
Cause they aren’t out in a kittening battlefield, in stabbing distance of someone else who is looking to stab.
It has nothing to do with prudence, and everything to do with being reasonable and practical. As I said before, while it’s a fantasy game, you can only suspend your disbelief so far. No matter how you slice it, a girl character charging into close-range combat with a metal bikini is just ridiculous.
Couldnt have said it better myself! It has nothing to do with being prude or anything like that, its just so damn silly to see some of the so called armor out there, mixed with the extreme high heals.
A woman can look sexy but I just cant understand this fixation that female heros have to be dressed really kittenty, is it so hard to come to terms with the idea of a woman that is strong, determined and want to protect others and NOT be dressed like she is just waiting to be tipped?
God that made me sound like a hardcore militant feminist which I am not but its just that why is it that all female characters in movies and games are expected to “dress to arouse”? While guys wear normal clothes. This is why I love female Commander Shepard, one of the few true female heros out there.
,
I see people posting about this a lot, that maps are dead. Yes, the mid level 30-60 maps are lacking but they are far from dead. On my server, I would still see a few players every other minute or so. Theres always someone around, always. Even if they are not spamming map chat like Barrens chat from WoW. They are there. Ive asked in map chat “anyone home”. silence. Im doing a DE event on my own, and here come two players to help me out. Not everyone is a forum poster, not everyone likes to map chat. But that doesn’t mean the community is bad. Stormbluff isle is constantly populated, Jade quarry and janthr are too.

Yea ok, I see what you mean. I also see people here and there while leveling but still hardly any communication going on at all. Even standing in Lion’s Arch its silent, ask a question, no reply.Last thing I want is a barren chat but some signs of life would be nice at least.
Guess I will just hang in there and hope it gets better once I get closer to 80.
I dont play a mmo to run around on my own, if I want that I play a single player game or a fps pew pew.
There is a community in this game? Ok, true I am not a veteran with a huge experience of all aspects of this game, havent even reached 80 yet!
Getting close though, so far, the only evidence I seen of a “community” are rare posts on any map chat (mostly its dead though), 2 completely random guild invites and 1 group invite for a map event. Other then that this feels like a single player game…
Sigh… maybe I picked the wrong server or something,
I strongly disagree, sure, guess they can add some town clothes like that but I for one was glad to see that female armor is actually armor, nothing makes me roll my eyes more then the skimpy “armor” you see for female characters in many games, same with high heels. Tera being the most extreme example, so over the top I view that game as a parody! :P
When it is like that it just become so obvious that they target young teens and give them something to drool about.
I want a hero and want my character to look like one.
Ok, not from GW2 but wanted to share it anyway, played Warhammer online on a server were Order outnumbered us roughly 5-10 to 1. These words came from a guildie in vent, who had recently joinded WAR and mmo in general.
“Hold on a sec, what do you mean the zerg is comming? There is no starcraft in this game!”
This may be off topic, but you’re saying you healed in raids in WoW and you just spammed heals? You didn’t dps, cc, interrupt, decurse, kite adds, stay out of fire, stack or spread out, time your heals perfectly either for the 2 secs your tank was healable or in between boss hits? It’s easy to call WoW raids faceroll in retrospect, I guess…
I wouldnt worry about what he said to much, Heh… anyone who claim to be a “true healer” and then say its just all about afk spam heals, well, tbh, he never been a healer at all, thats a dps talking, or a bad tank.
Anyone who has played as a serious healer know the blame game they love to do. saying that we “healers have such a easy job just standing in a corner watching the green bars” :p
Anything to take the blame off them. Yea granted, if I did one of the easier exp dungeons in a game, and most of us are over geared (to help a guildie or such), then yes, it could go a bit on auto pilot, but other then that, healing is everything but, “standing in a corner and afk spamming heals”…

Soooo… complain about anything and everything justified or not, but once they made sure to satisfy your “phat lewt” addiction everything is all right with the world?
And they wonder why I think the mmo market is a mess… :p
Wait what?! GW2 is NOT “a return in a way to how MMOs were before WoW”! Just because it took a small step away from the set classes and such doesnt make it just as linear, theme park and static as any mmo that got released post WoW. Just I dont blame WoW per say though, like my favorite comparison; lets say WoW is a hamburger, its tasty, its simple, and its popular with the masses, that does NOT make it good food though, and the problem isnt the hamburger, the problem would be if I want to go out and get a nice bite to eat, there is nothing but hamburger joints these days. Well thats how the mmo market is atm.
Ever since WoW came out, its all been nothing but stale linear and non interactive mmo worlds and all of them pretty much only try to focus on getting players into the “phat lewt” addiction.
“Hm yea, quite a few of them, but Im sure me and my turrets can handle them!”
7 years is considered veteran? Man now I feel ancient with more then twice that amount of time of experience of mmo! :P
Anyway, personally I never been a fan on ingame stores since they often end up as pure pay to win, giving waaay to much advantage to those that choose to buy things from the store.
However, GW2 I gotta say have managed to implement it very well!
Its not pay to win, sure, buying gems makes the game more convinient and speed up the process somewhat but a player that havent used the store at all can still get gems and in the end all the same advantages, only takes more time.
Hello Guild Wars 2.
Since I logged in on the game i was verry surprised,
The graphics where good, no quests and stuf and a verry good comunity-based gameplay. But a little problem for me was; i couln’t be a healer.
Healing yourself, yes. Others, no.Before i start playing this game i played World of Warcraft. I liked the game but became sick of doing quest after quest after quest.
De good side of that coin was healing. EVery race could heal (like we can do too) but in a different rate. you got Healing Over Time healer, Instant healers, or Area Of Effect healing. I really liked that (not that i want go back) and it’s a shame everyone can heal himself so they don’t need supporting people like me to help them (other than killing the enemy)
Actually i hoped Arenanet had something to offer for every player, onfortunatly not for me. I am not complaining about leaving the game (when that was the case i would have left without saying that) but i just hope Arenanet will think about this.
Yours Faithfully,
I feel your pain, for that exact reason I also doubt I will play this game for long. Being a dedicated healer is the only role I enjoy in today’s mmorpg games.
Its not hard to see why GW2’s solution is very popular with the dps crowd, they were always the most numerous and now they don’t have to spam for tanks/healers.
Yay for making games even more “MEMEMEME!” Screw teamwork! :p
—a fun, meaningful, non frustrating, profitable crafting system.
—housing (non-instanced) for social fun , and showing off our treasures
—something original for end game besides 1-3 hour dungeon grinding.
—to feel like after im leveled and geared that i am powerful and find loads of treasures.
—frequent events and holiday fun.How could you make housing non-instanced?
Do you mean that it’s an instance with a small outside area such as a garden and not just an indoor cube of boredom like some games do?
Well, a game that is over 10 years old managed to do it just fine, SWG, completely open world housing, guild halls, city buildings like hospitals, bars ect ect, and the owners could decorate them in ANY way they wanted. (could be a pain typing alll those /move “Object” “distance” “direction” commands, but wow, the result could be sooo worth it.
One of the small pleasures in that game was to enter a player city and see if and how much work they put to decorating the city itself and the insides of its buildings.
Each servers city hub quickly became more and more decorated and a matter of pride for the guild that founded the city.

Freedom, non linear worlds. No set “rail of progression”. In other words, no mmo so far in the past few years. Can’t stand Eve, only for the idiotic reason that I want to play as a person, not a spaceship.
Out of the “new gen” theme park mmorpg’s Rift holds the record for holding my attention, played it almost exactly for 1 year, and only reason I lasted that long was the raid content and that it was kinda funny to never use a macro and still outshine the other raid healers with long discussions as result. :P
WoW lasted me 5 months and holds second place, pretty much all other non indie mmo out there, (sadly indies never last,) have failed to get me past the free month.
My number one mmo in time spent overall is the old oooold mmo, Star Wars Galaxies.
Content sucked pretty hard in that game, no “epix!!1” at all, in fact pretty much all loot was either vendor trash for money or bonus mats to use in crafting, since everything was player made.
Oh well, would take ages to explain how much freedom and all you could do in that game before the patch of doom. Well, played it for 4 years, from release all until that one fateful patch when pretty much everyone left the game. :P
Did people not learn from mistakes made with SW:ToR and Diablo 3? I mean Trion pumps out quality stuff for Rift so fast why cant people just take after them?
It’s not about quality. It’s more about design. ArenaNet is trying to make their game appeal to everyone, so in essence the game is the jack of trades but the master of none, making for a really lackluster game that gets boring quickly.
Great visuals, great technology, kitteny design. It all comes back to design. They should have made a Guild Wars MMO, not a SW:TOR/WoW/Rift/Guild Wars mash up.
I wish they would make an mmo that would appeal to everyone, at least a little bit…. Sigh… every new mmo for the last couple of years have been pretty much identical, just different skins. Theme park mmo, unless they manage to completely nail the loot addiction aspect, have a very short shelf life.
I wish they once again would start adding a bit more sandbox to mmo.
Now Im not naive, I know the mmorpg of old will not make a return, with their vast freedom for the players, but just a little touch of it at least? Freedom and sandbox mode can really extend the life of an mmo even if they just add a little bit of it, anything is better then these completely locked and sealed linear worlds.
The game have just recently become completely unplayable for me, severe lag with several seconds (sometimes even up to 5+, all the way up to 10 seconds) delay on any ability, and almost every 5 min I get booted to char screen saying I lost connection.
Nothing wrong with my connection, no problem playing any other game online.
