No worries. I am not the type that has to have the newest thing. As long as I have a comp that will play anything I like I’m cool. The comp I am getting will even play Crisis 3 at the highest settings or at the very least pushing the envelope for highest settings depending on which site you look at. I’m good with that! :-)

Thanks! As far as just replacing the hard drive it was a 6-7 year old comp…..gave me a good excuse to get a new and improved one! :-) Should be here on Monday! Woo Hoo….I’m pumped! I can’t wait to see how an updated processor, memory and graphics card performs! Oh and yes I have a legit copy of Windows 7. :-)

I was wondering how it works if your computer hard drive fails and you have to buy a new computer. Will I be able to download the game again on my new comp with no issues? Will I lose all my characters? Thanks for any help you can supply.
The thing I find a near game breaking feature is the idiotic forced down leveling. You never get a true feel of how powerful you have become with forced leveling between areas. This feature needs to be removed completely. The whole idea of linking levels to geographic areas is both annoying and completely illogical. Think about this for a second. You are at level 80 and you return to the area where you began the game and just because of your geographical location you are now level 1-5? Really? This system is absurd. And don’t cry me a river about how it makes the game “fair” because that is total bs. This feature could quite possibly be the game breaker for me.
I know this post is kind of “old” but really you’re downleveled to keep the game fair. There’s no way around it. How would you feel if you were leveling an alt in an event and a TRUE level 80 elementalist/guardian/thief/anything with massive aoe/damage just came in and killed everything in one hit leaving you with no credit for said event? The way it stands now you can be powerful and keep your exotic gear but still be balanced enough so you’re not 1 shotting everything and ruining the experience of newbies to the game.
That aside, I personally don’t do a lot of pvp but if someone is downed and can manage to get back up is that considered fair or unfair? It seems like it would be fair if they knew their class well enough to exit a downed state. The only place I could see this as a problem is in the case of warriors since they can very quickly exit their downed state. But even then they’re most likely going to die right after their rally.
That excuse has been bandied about forever. It’s basically a whiners complaint and really has no merit as any newbie can move on to another area and come back to the so called “bullied” area later. Bullies cannot be everywhere all the time. There really is absolutely no intelligent reason for having level scaling in a game.
Sorry to say that you’re wrong Madd, but, you’re wrong. Level scaling ruins a game. Period. I have stated my reasons multiple times before and those reasons stand on their own merits and I won’t restate them here.
What would improve this game infinitely is to remove level scaling from the game. Its a system that destroys a game by making it so called “fair”. Level scaling takes away your sense of power from your character and takes away the satisfaction of working your a— off to become more powerful. If a game has level scaling then gaining levels becomes irrelevant.
Level scaling is one of the best features in the game, keeping content as relevant as possible no matter your level is important to give players a variety of activities to do. Also, last I checked, your rewards scale as well so I don’t see an issue here, if anything, every single MMORPG that is to be released in the future should have level scaling.

Level-scaling is one of GW2’s major selling points.
If you don’t like it, you should find a different game. GW2 is designed for players who want/like level-scaling. Your demands will fall on deaf ears here.
It’s never going away, and will probably only be emphasized more so in the future as it was last patch.
Arena Net wants leveling to feel irrelevant, and for 2 very legitimate reasons:
- No ghost-town zones. All zones being playable at max-level. (And the issue is reduced, but progressive reward-rates keep the issue prevalent)
- Pro-grouping. High level players can play their ‘main’ instead of making an alt when a friend joins the game.
I have found level scaling to be for whiners. It eliminates the need to have levels at all. If level scaling exists then using levels in a game should be eliminated. You can have one or the other but not both if the game is going to have some semblance of uniformity. Level scaling reduces a games character to being the equivalent of 1st level throughout the game. There is no sense of power of your character, no satisfaction of gaining a level and frankly makes irrelevant using levels at all. And no level scaling is not a huge selling factor for this game. The big selling factor for this game is the fact it fosters a “help your fellow player” idea. When I started playing this game I was amazed when someone I didn’t know nor was playing with stopped to revive me when I died. Now THAT is a big selling point of this game. I had never before experienced that in a game. Level scaling on the other hand really takes something away from the game by removing the satisfaction you feel from your hard work of leveling your character. It should NEVER be used in a game.
this again… even with lvl scaling my lvl 80 condition build (with only base power) 2-3 shots mbos in the lowest lvl areas that is less than what my power built lowbies can do, so yes she certainly gained a lot of power… i actually wish lvl scaling was more strict
Thanks for making my point. “Even with my level 80 condition build…2-3 shots…” That makes my point exactly. You STILL have to take 2-3 shots to kill something in the lowest areas at level 80?! LOL…that is ridiculous. The fact that scaling bumps you back that close to lower level power is completely absurd.
no it does NOT, i play a condition build becasue i want my conditions to kill not my direct damage, im sure a power build would one shot easily so i did NOT prove your point, my point is it si still a cakewalk to do the lower lvl areas too much of a cakewalk… anyway this is actually quite offtopic, so maybe talk about something relavant to what the topic was created or go to a different thread about lvl scaling…
This is not off topic from its title. I finished the title with my opinion. Oh and of course you made my point……and quite effectively at that by illustrating the absurdity of down scaling a level 80 character. …And I quite thank you for the illustration.
In my opinion guild wars 2 needs to…..get rid of level scaling.

Ok…I’m going to put the record on again. Level scaling makes gaining levels in general irrelevant. Why have levels at all if you engage in level scaling? It makes no difference if you are level 1 or 80 if, when you enter differing regions, your character automatically becomes the level corresponding to that region. There is no sense of your power level when scaling is used. if you are level 50 then you are level 50 period….regardless of what area of the world you are visiting. The whole concept is utterly laughable to think your level changes not because you have gained experience, but rather you have stepped across some imaginary boundary between geographical regions. The whole concept of level scaling is completely absurd and has no logical use in a game.
You still don’t explain how it improves the game. You’ve just rattled off reasons why it is illogical.
If you’re against down-scaling being ‘illogical’, I guess you’re against up-scaling as well in PvP and WvW?
Logic aside, it’s to prevent griefing of events, allows all content to be relevant and allow lower level players a shot at events appropriate to their level without a bunch of level 80’s coming in and destroying everything. How is this a bad thing exactly?
As is, you are more powerful as a scaled down from level 80 to level 40 than a genuine level 40:
- Better Armour and Weapons.
- Access to more Traits.
- Access to more areas of the game.
I am against level scaling either way..up or down. Your level should be your level…period. No adjustments. OMG…If I hear the grieving argument one more time….that is a whiners excuse. The fact that some higher level players harass lower level players is irrelevant (and no I don’t condone this activity…but don’t punish the many for the actions of a few). Move on to another area and come back to where the bullies were later. Problem solved. Removing scaling gives a greater sense of reality to the game, gives the player a sense of his TRUE power (not just a “scaled down 40 from an 80”). There should be no challenge to something you have already completed 20 levels ago…LOL. Access to your FULL power should be available in ALL areas of the game period. Again, as I said, level scaling renders gaining levels irrelevant. There is no point to levels if scaling is present.
In my opinion guild wars 2 needs to…..get rid of level scaling.

Just like in GW1 (if you played that) the enemy’s armour plays a big part. You will always do more damage aginst the squishy targets for example like those that use magic. You can go to the sPvP lobby and test this against the dumies there too and see the difference between hitting hard, medium and soft targets. Also you will notice if you hit some real weak non monster creature such as rabbits etc that you will hit VERY high, this is due to the fact they have no armour.
Thanks Paulytnz: This does make sense as I have for the fun of it killed rabbits and such and do over 1000 or even 2000 points of damage. It seems that calculating damage for any one particular weapon is somewhat convoluted.
I just feel that the skills need to either be more powerful or made to last longer.
This still doesn’t add up. I am using a weapon with a range of strength of 244-275. My power additions are 25 and I still only do an average of 150 points of damage. So I don’t think the weapon strength directly correlates to damage. So if this is the case what do the weapon strength numbers represent?
What is weapon strength? I’ve been using the weapon with the greatest “weapon strength” stat. Then I began to realize that even though I use a weapon with a larger weapon strength number I am not seeing any increase in damage done. Sometimes a decision has to be made regarding supplementary stats on a weapon like +20 defense etc, but I was just wondering if anyone knows what is the significance of the weapon strength stat? Thanks.
Does anyone else feel that some of the skills are pretty much worthless? Most of the skills last 2 seconds. Some less than that. Did you get that? 2 seconds or less! One example is called I think stone anchor….causes your enemy to sink for 2 seconds. Really? 2 seconds? The skills/abilities in this game are woefully underpowered and most are completely worthless. I suggest acquired powers be beefed up….A LOT.
LOL..I have people agreeing with me about something I never said. To be clear…I do not like level scaling…it should be removed from the game not kept in the game.
Heard it all before and the argument is basically bs. If there are high level characters keeping the low level characters from completing a particular area move on to another area….they can’t be everywhere all the time. That argument is for whiners. And my gear is always maxed out for what ever level I am currently. I have yet to hear a legitimate and logical argument for keeping level scaling. It is as I said before the disease of gaming and should be banned. And it does make character levels pointless.
Maybe you’re just refusing to like it o.O?
I think it’s more option than facts or something that can be calculated/proven right/wrong.
With dynamic leveling, it does diminish the sense of leveling up, but not too much. You’re still stronger than a person of that zone’s level. However, it does have some pretty nice plus to it. You now can play any place in the map and feel that it isn’t just a roflstomp of newbie NPCs lol. And as some mentioned before, you can level with friends and join up with people much more easily without ruining their experience of the game.
Now, imagine if they let you have an option to not downlevel. Say you’re at an event with 30+ players, and you decided to be a hero
. You jump in, boom, boss is down. It’s just … I don’t know what to say but for a game like GW2 where a large chunk of your leveling comes from dynamic events, downleveling is needed. Plus, since you downlevel, the content from the NPCs upscale a bit to your level. If you remove downleveling, then they’d have to remove the content loot scaling too.
I understand your point. I know in some games with no level scaling there are nimrods that come and steal points from the lower levels just to be an a—. But punishing everyone for the deeds of a few is not the answer. Move on to another area…they can’t be everywhere at all times.
There are soo many posts like this, go back to the farming boss killing mmo you came from, this aint how the majority of players want the game to become.
And there way more ppl playing than whining in the forums. Find another to get ya greedy mits on gold /rant off.
You speak with many words but say little.
appling logic to make believe fantasy gaming is laughable.
Your response is laughable. Logic can be applied to anything. And Level scaling is still a disease of games that needs a cure.
Pluzoid your response is so far off it isn’t even funny. I never said a thing about WOW and have never played WOW nor do I have any intention of playing WOW. The fact is level scaling is not a logical concept in gaming. If you are level 50 (or you pick a level) and you worked your butt off to get there and then you step across a border and all of a sudden you are level 10….does that REALLY make any sense whatsoever? No. Level scaling negates having levels at all. All those people who cry about higher level people “taking all the events” (and I don’t condone this practice) are whiners. If they are harassing you in one area move on to another….they can’t be everywhere all the time….LOL. The fact is level scaling is the same thing as politicians wanting to re-distribute wealth….it may sound good but in the end it drags everyone down.
Here you work your butt off for your traits and armor.
And you still gain nothing because of the level scaling. Level scaling makes all power boosting methods irrelevant whether it is traits, armor or levels. Level scaling needs to be removed. Period.
In my opinion guild wars 2 needs to…..get rid of level scaling.

My original comment stands. There is no logical reason for dropping a characters level only because he crossed a boundary between geographical areas. As far as the “greedy farming crap” statement ….LOL. Who said anything about that? No one. Just cut the idiotic level scaling. The whole concept of losing levels because of geographical location is just laughable.

One thing would make this game infinitely better…..get rid of level scaling. Period.
Level scaling should never be used in games….EVER. It takes away from the feeling of exhilaration of becoming more powerful and being able to actually SEE THE DIFFERENCE when go to lower levels. Level scaling should at the very least be optional in the game and better yet eliminated altogether. When level scaling exists in a game it makes gaining levels irrelevant.
Level scaling should be removed from the game altogether. It is a disease that rots a game from the inside out. I hope more people begin to complain about this idiotic practice.
Level scaling is a major disease of gameplay. It makes gaining levels totally irrelevant. If you have level scaling in a game then that game should not have levels at all because scaling makes leveling worthless. Making scaling and OPTION in this game I could live with. Then those who want it can use it and those who don’t won’t. PLEASE get rid of this heinous practice in gaming. Level scaling should NEVER NEVER NEVER be used as it takes the satisfaction of becoming more powerful away from the player.
You are singing to the choir Exstacy. I have been criticizing level scaling system for a while now. It should be removed all together. Any game with a level scaling system makes gaining levels in general irrelevant. This system should be trashed. The whole idea of stepping across a particular boundary cuts your levels from an 80 level character to a1-5 level character or anything in between is totally absurd. I hope more complaints of this nature arise so they will get the message. I am strongly considering scrapping this game entirely because of such idiotic game play.
Absurd analysis Grumm. I actually took a 5th level character to the Toymaker area (Christmas time) with one friend so I have already “experienced” that. The two of us finished the area because, once again it leveled us up to the appropriate levels. That in no way allows you to sense the feeling of how powerful you are. Forced leveling ruins the feel of the game. Games that utilize this system make gaining levels irrelevant. You may as well not have levels at all with this type of system as there is no distinguishing sense of power regardless of what level you are whether you are first or 80th. The whole idea of stepping across a particular border and lose half or all of your levels is completely absurd. I have heard all your arguments for this system before. The whole “grieving” argument is nothing but a whine. Forced leveling is an absurd practice that caters to whiners and should never be used in games.
Want a true feel for just how powerful a level 80 character is? Take a level 10 character and try to make it to the level 80 areas; if you do make it there, try fighting a mob.
The system isn’t absurd. It’s to make sure that you don’t have a few level 80s rolling through the starter areas griefing the beginners, it’s so you can go anywhere in the game and find some level of challenge.
And really, the way the game is set up, it’s not something you notice all that much.
The thing I find a near game breaking feature is the idiotic forced down leveling. You never get a true feel of how powerful you have become with forced leveling between areas. It doesn’t really matter…they may as well make it unlimited because that is exactly what it is since this game has level scaling. The level scaling needs to be removed completely. The whole concept of level adjustment in general makes ANY level caps irrelevant or leveling in general. There are absolutely no distinguishing characteristics (power wise) in this game whether you are level 1 or 80. This game would be perfect if this system would be eliminated.

Been there done that skullfaerie. I have played an elementalist too and he is stuck in the same situation. I am not that bad of a player…not great but not bad. The weapons and armor available to you for these classes are totally worthless. They will need to bump these stats for these items to make it playable for the non-tank classes. I would just go out and bump my levels and come back to it but this game has an idiotic forced leveling system so you can’t do that either. I mean the whole idea of forced leveling is an idea originating from whiners. Think about this concept for a second. Lets say you have capped out at level 80 and you go back to the beginning of the game and you are forced back to level 1? Really? Does that REALLY make any sense whatsoever? If thats the case just let us have access to level 80 areas now…. our stats will be bumped and game over. The game has some issues that really need addressing to make it more enjoyable.
I have found that unless you play a warrior or guardian the difficulty level of the personal story boss encounters are so difficult as to be virtually un-enjoyable. The difficulty level needs to be adjusted WAY down for the various non-tank professions. I don’t like playing the typical warrior/fighter type class. I enjoy playing a thief or mage (elementalist) type of character and these classes are just too underpowered for this game regarding the personal story bosses. For instance when confronting Tervelan and playing a thief I have found it to be exceedingly difficult. The number of enemies you have to face is EXTREMELY over powering. The thief has some very impressive moves that take a lot of room and if you try them on the bridge battling Tervelan and you fall of the bridge, the whole encounter resets and you have to start completely over. That may be a bug I’m not sure. A thief or elementalist is just too difficult to play as solo. The various not fighter type classes drastically need some more powerful weapons and armor to counter this problem. I am probably finished with this game as I do not get as much enjoyment playing a fighter type class and playing the ones I really enjoy are beyond the scope of playability as solo characters. I could just wander the world and not proceed with my story line but that is 90% of the games charisma. I hope these things will be adjusted in the future but until then this game will collect dust on my desk top.
Thanks Shufflepants. I willingly admit I am not the best player, however this issue is not just mine…I have read this many many times regarding some classes and soloing. It is a problem and if not corrected to some extent this game will never ascend to the potential it has and may fail completely. Only time will tell. And my “realism” comment was one of a common sense relating to a game and not actual real life.
Some things have to be “unrealistic” such as regenerating your life. Scaling is NOT one of those.
Thing with level scaling is you never feel how powerful you really are. There should be a bit of “realism” to your character. Think about….if your character were real would he all of a sudden lose power just because he traveled to a particular area? No. Scaling mostly sucks because it is a barrier, especially to those who solo. I agree pk bot ..there should be an optional feature to turn it on and off. Some classes like the elementalist are darn near impossible to play in some areas as a solo character and especially you personal story. I predict they will correct this in the future. Right now I am stuck in my personal story and cannot advance. This is a MAJOR problem.
(edited by Shade.6081)
I am playing an elementalist and am level 13. I cannot beat him (two blade pete). I know there are forced levels to make it even but will I ever be able to defeat him or will my personal story stop here? Will I be able to come back later and have stronger armor and toughness or does everything downsize?
