Some griping about support guardian

Well, arguing about DPS and builds in a guardian sub forum with a group of guardians who believe they can do everything from out DPSing warriors while boasting top tier support all in Zerker and doing 50+ fotm in melee.
You believe what you want and we’ll agree to disagree.

As stated, the tokens show how often I run my dungeons, how often I meet different guardians, good ones and bad ones.
What have you to show for your statements regarding dps, no use for heals, and fotm 50+ melee?

Warrior/Thief/Ele outclasses a guardians DPS no matter how you cut it.
I have never mentioned anything wrong with berzerker gear, they are a must for dps, but a guard wearing full zerker gear and intending to do no buffing, only damage and the occasional virtues is a bad guardian in my books.
If I want a kitten ed heavy armor DPS I’ll look for a bad warrior, even then they do more DPS than a full zerker guard.

You tell me any halfway good group would have ele’s stacking might, I’m telling you 9/10 groups do not do so, not unless it is a privately formed team or have prior communication.
Most guardians I see do not even bother using virtues/utilities because they claim to be DPS guardians. From personal experience around half of the guardians I meet in dungeons does this and I run dungeons/fractals exclusively.
One extreme case of a guardian I met boasts to me for being at 12k hp Full DPS build saying he was more paper than my 14k thief, ever so often falling in CoE.

And no, with stacking being the norm in most dungeons, heals are not useless, they are a must have necessity because there is little room for dodging and damage mitigation.
More so amplified with guardians having the most AoE heals available in their weapon and utility skill set.

This is more so the case in fotm especially at 40+ scale even at 31+ where instabilities are introduced. Most encounters would have you defer to range instead of melee, how then is a Zerker guardian going to fair in terms of damage potential.

Again, if a Zerker guardian has no intention to buff or heal but instead picks hammers and greatswords and attempts to justify so by claiming they are doing as good a DPS as other damage dealing classes, I’m afraid to say you are only deluding yourselves.

For a clue of how often I do my dungeon runs,

http://postimg.org/image/k09xl3iq1/

I run both closed group and PUG parties and have my fair share of good and bad players.

I’m currently holding off from buying globs and mats mainly due to the increased cost from the release of ascended armor crafting.
Might be awhile before I actually get to craft my Incinerator when the prices stabilizes.

Mind you if you want DPS, go play a Warrior instead, why try to be something you are not?
While your DPS guardian is trying to do damage instead of upkeeping might and boon heals and damage mitigation you are affecting the overall dps your entire party can do.
Doing dungeons effectively means maintaining group DPS and staying alive, what good is a guard who does nothing but swing his greatsword around.

Downed players do no DPS, that applies for you and your party. Even when stacking in dungeons, having someone in a downed state and having to stop attacking and resurrect them means lower DPS.

However much you want a guardian to be a DPS class, they just don’t fair as well as others in this category, so instead of “role-playing” your “DPS” guardian swinging his greatsword and thinking it is efficient, you need to take a step back and look at the entire picture on how group synergy works.

You know you can support and DPS at the same time?

“Downed players do no DPS” I’m tired of this mantra that people scream. First of all, you’re wrong. Downed players still contribue DPS by spamming #1.

Secondly, I believe you meant dead players do no DPS. Using the top DPS meta build, you could probably be dead for 25% or more of the fight and still out DPS most of the play how you want builds.

Also, if you think warriors are the meta for DPS, then you should grab a zerk thief or a FGS ele, that may open your eyes.

I main as a thief, I know how much DPS they can do, but compared to a warrior their sustainable DPS fairs in comparison.

Think about this in a logical standpoint, 1 downed player means lesser DPS in and of itself and others trying to resurrect them stop DPSing to do so.
Are you telling me a downed player + people reviving does more damage than a constant heal buff guardian that has no downed player in his team? Do the math.

Re: Mrauls

I play guardian as a secondary profession, no, I do not claim to know everything about a guardian but I’ve put my fair share of time into one.
I’m not saying a guardian cannot DPS, I’m just saying they can’t do so as well compared to others.
Anyone who claims so have not tried playing both guardian and other pure DPS classes.
I believe Zerker gear for support guardian as the OP is seeking advice on is a wrong place to start.

Sure you can wear Zerker, try to DPS and Support at the same time, but doing both at the same time means failing to excel at any specific one.

I stand by what I say, a good support guardian, keeps a staff on-hand, constantly upkeeps might, heal, protection and prevents any party member from dropping, and above all, controls the situation by using the right utility/virture at the right time.

Lyssa runes gives precision, random boon on healing and on top of that, cleanses all conditions, gains all boons and has a cooldown of 45 sec.

We are talking about a support guard here, while healing, you gain boon and on elite you become tanky due to the boons and removes all condition. This frees up my self condition cleansing utility slot and also allows me to use healing breeze instead of Signet of resolve if I do not have 1.
On top of that, you have a 5 sec all boons that allows you to soak up plenty of damage.

Sure, if you want to be a dps guardian by all means wear zerker but if you are trying to increase overall dps to party and sustain party dps by playing support, you need those heals and survivability.

Think about it, a full Zerker guardian(lowest hp pool) that gets downed often cannot control the battlefield and instead of tanking, preventing party members from dropping and giving boons and constantly stacking 15 Might to the entire team attempts to provide DPS.

In the end, it’s a matter of play-style and if people want to play DPS guardian, by all means, but IMO a support heal/buff/tank guard contributes much more overall dps than one that attempts to do nothing but provide mediocre damage.

You can say whatever you want, but it depends on why you’re playing the game. If you want to do dungeons quickly and efficiently, then you’re wrong and should just go with DPS guard.

If you want to play how you want and role play as some white knight paladin pretending you’re keeping the party alive (which, mind you, you can still do in zerk) while ‘tanking’ all the damage (Don’t forget most attacks are AOEs or cleaves, so that’s silly) then sure, you’re spot on.

Mind you if you want DPS, go play a Warrior instead, why try to be something you are not?

A good guardian will also make use of rune sets that gives all boons when elite skill is activated.

Those Lyssa runes are rubbish, bring some DPS runes as damage is the meta, like scholar runes.

Guardians are good for damage mitigation, timely use of skills, heals and buffs.
What most guardian players are missing is, they need to use their virtues, they aren’t there for show and activating them at the right time does so much wonder than leaving them on for their passive ability.

Having a good guardian in a team vs not having one at all makes all the difference.
To name a few, Wall of Reflect you pretty much mitigate all range damage, Stand your Ground and Hallowed Ground gives stability for knockdown mobs.
Purging flames, Save yourselves removes condition for the entire party, this and much more mitigation and protective skills.
Tome of Wrath also allows heals and full heals and can turn the tide of a losing battle if used correctly.

A good guardian will also make use of rune sets that gives all boons when elite skill is activated.

A must have for support guardians is the staff weapon, No.2 heals on contact and when trigged to explode and No. 4 gives stacks of might and heals at the end, Stand your ground utility also gives protection and regeneration.
I can’t stress enough the use of Virtue of Resolve as a healing skill and is the best in the guardians kitten nal.

Last but not least there is the Virtue of Courage and other utilities that gives aegis, activated at the right time, it gives your party immunity to one hit kills and can be used in conjunction while trying to revive a downed member while under fire.

Shield off-hand also provides damage mitigation by giving protection (-33% incoming dmg) and it’s No. 5 skills allows you to push enemies away, block projectiles as well as heal when reactivated again.

The guardian is a deep class and has a lot of utilities new players need to pick up to be effective in a party, a good start is a staff, constantly using your virtues and switching utilities to suit the situation.

Update
Found some good spot of platinum in Fireheart Rise, have been farming it for awhile, close to completing my Gift of Metal.

What area of the map? For Timberline Falls go to Thistlereed Waypoint. Lots of nodes close by plus a rich vein to the west, if you go into and under the water by the skelks and go into the little cave – not even any bad guys to fight for that one!

Around 60 plats per 15 mins, got reset now though, not before I cleared my gift of metal so all’s good.

So, I’ve met a kind-hearted samaritan who graciously donated a substantial amount of gold as well as t6 material to aid in my legendary crafting.

I just wanted to take time off to thank said person for doing so and acknowledge the fact that there are actually really good individuals in video game communities, especially so in Guild Wars 2.

As a matter of fact, since my hiatus from this game awhile back, I went back to Diablo 3 and put down some cash to gear my character up. During which I was scammed of roughly 300m gold while trading with someone in-game.
Of cause I was to be blamed for being careless then, that which caused me to again leave Diablo 3 largely due to the community.

In stark contrast, this individual allowed me to regain my faith in the gaming community and showed me that not everyone is self serving.

Again, I would like to reiterate and offer my sincere thanks to this person, may good deeds be rewarded.

Now I’m broke.
So far I’ve gotten 250 of every metal except for platinum.
Somehow I kinda underestimated the need for platinum, appears I’ll need 750 more after crafting.
Other than that, I’m still 80 short on each lodestones, is it cheaper to sell my current cores and buy lodestones or would crafting lodestones from cores be cheaper? I have around 40 odd of each cores.

Thanks again.

So, I decided to start working on weaponsmith 400,

this site requires me to buy a lot of materials and costs around 25g total.

Would this guide be cheaper to craft ?

(seems to be more expensive)

Or is there a better cheap weaponsmithing guide around?

Thanks.

Well, I made enough to outright buy a precursor off the TP, but doing that would leave me with some crumb change and a long way from getting the necessary mats for crafting the legendary.

I’ll be putting up buy order for the precursor for now.

I’d guess the first thing to start crafting is Mystic Clover since failure would result in T6 mats?
Also, I have the metals but not ingots, what would be the cheapest way to acquire them? I have armor and weaponsmith at around 70-100.
Sell metal buy ingots or up crafting and craft ingots myself?

Thanks

I get what you mean by saying some of these suggestions seems OP, but with respect to the current standing of the thief skills that we have now and how they hold up to some of the other classes, I think these suggestions are actually pretty contained.

Anyway, these are merely suggestions on thief skills which I feel needs some work with, would be amazing if someone from Anet actually took notice and incorporated them in future patches.

The way I see it, sword MH build seems to be less favored over dagger mainly due to the iffy stealth MH skill which is largely unrewarding.
Sword set of skills also feels lackluster compared to dagger aside from infiltrator strike which also has no follow up.

By adding bleed to slash, infiltrator strike can now be followed up with bleed and cripple, and then return. This forces opponent to either use a condition remover or stay and be wary of the impending second strike.

I’m going to say stealth does not deserve a stack of evasion, stealth in and of itself is a defensive skill that people are already complaining about, too many ways to stealth and giving it another evasion stack would really be too much OPness.

Steal/Shadowstep/Blink skills however are for escaping/engagement. What I’m trying to suggest here is to reward the use of high risk medium cooldown skills(unlike stealth which is easy to spam with dagger) which are largely underused to make them effective by providing a sort of damage mitigation.
This way even with our low hp and defense, we can more confidently engage and escape with a “backup plan”, befitting IMO for a hit and away thief.

Thief Skill suggestions

in Thief

ShannonKasull.2091

Utility

Shadow Refuge – AoE Sign and area should only be visible to allies/party

Smoke Screen – Block all types of projectiles like reflect wall instead of only low flying projectiles and also dredge shockwave(projectile)

Signet of Malice – Passive more HP per hit, Active 100% lifesteal for a certain number of hits/sec (hits seems more balanced)

Hide in Shadows – Cast time needs to be 0-0.5 sec

Assassin’s Signet – Deal 30% damage for next 3 attacks, reduce reset time

Traps – Traps needs to be AoE instead of single target, either make it castable up to 3 times or make triggering the first trap sets 3 more traps in the area randomly (we need more trap thieves, rangers and engineers have more AoE traps and status than us, what gives?)

Quickness – Should not have any drawbacks with it’s insane 60 sec cooldown, a nice midway would be either to reduce 50% endurance regen or remove all endurance, not both.

Basilisk Venom – 3 sec stone with 60 sec cooldown or total rework
Basilisk Venom Signet – Passive gives every 5th dagger attack/ 3rd Sword attack a 50% chance to inflict stone for .5 sec, active to stone for 1.5- sec with 30 sec cooldown

I like my utility skills do something about them Anet, they need alot of rework to be useful.

Shortbow

Also my pet peeve

Disabling Arrow – What gives? For an evasion skill, this should and must be working 100% of the time.
Get this working already, make this roll on the floor for 1/2 the distance of withdraw, like withdraw.
It’s just that simple comeon.

Sword

Slash – Needs to proc bleeding
Tactical Strike – Daze 2 sec from front, 1.5x damage from the side/back
Pistol Whip – 1-2 sec Daze or grants evasion during channeling or does not require channeling at all
Headshot – 1 sec Daze

Pistol

Black powder – Instead of casting a small AoE that no one is going to stand in, reduce black powder range to point blank (synergy with infiltrator’s strike) and cast a 3-5 sec smaller AoE that sticks with the target

Unload – At 5 initiative this should come with 1 vulnerability per hit, either that or reduce it to 4 initiative

Dagger

Dancing Dagger – Add a 2 initiative cost secondary skill that immobilizes the first target hit by dancing dagger for 3 sec

Death Blossom – 1/4 sec ? at least make it 1/2-1 sec, given our measly hp, we’d need it.

Lastly, this is probably not going to happen but
Shadow Step – Any shadow step skill should give either stealth or evasion

And the caveat skill to reinvigorate thieves

Introducing a new boon – Evasion (works like protection but instead can be stacked to a maximum of 3 and ticks down every 3-5 secs when not removed by attacks
Acquired when using steal, shadowstep skills, blink skills or even dodging

http://bravevesperia.com/ can help calculate the cost of buying the materials for a legendary as well as some of the high end exotics created with the MF.

Very helpful link thank you.

The T6 materials along will cost you ~500 gold. Just a rough estimate. Probably another 150-200 gold for stacks of ecto. You will need a full stack of 250 ectos plus ~233 extra or so for mystic clovers.

Always do your mystic clovers first, as they will yield a lot of T6 materials when you ‘fail’ to produce a clover.

Also, sell all those lodestones/cores that you do not need. Find the recipe for your legendary and keep the ones you do need. Liquidate the rest of your valuable items also.

You can make a small fortune by just selling stacks of junk like crafting materials.

It’s up to you if you want to wait out precursor crafting or not. Sounds like you still have a little ways to go.

Good luck.

Good insights, going with what you’re saying, do I really have to farm another 500+ gold for the mats? This is nearly as much as the precursor that I’m going to buy. I would think it would cost me at most 200 gold thereabouts.
What are my alternatives? Would farming for T6 mats be feasible?
Where would be a good place to do it?

Thanks for the reply Ouimette, but as far as I can tell, I’ve heard the story about scavenger hunt for the past 6 months+ and there has yet to be any reliable information or official release previews that points to an alternative way of attaining the precursor any time soon.

I’m looking at it this way, if I acquire all required mats before such information presents itself, I’ll most likely go ahead and craft it. But in the absence of such information, I might as well have something to work towards in the mean time.

If you followed this thread previously, some may know I started out trying to craft the Incinerator legendary.

Halfway through acquiring the required materials, I did some re-evaluation, decided against it. Instead, I went for Twilight.

Long story short, I felt the resources needed to craft a legendary cost almost if not as much as the pre cursor itself.
This would probably be the only legendary I’ll be crafting and although I still like the Incinerator more than Twilight, the raw benefits from a 2 hand er outweighed the aesthetics.

As such, my journey to craft the legendary got extended and here I am now

120 gold away from crafting it.

100 Icy Runestones
20g crafting Recipes

Old Topic
So I’ve been saving up slowly but steadily since launch after I’ve set my sights on crafting a precursor.
I’m getting close, around 100-150g left before I can afford one off the TP.
Besides saving gold for the precursor I’ve yet to craft any of the other mats but have been saving all required loots for it since the beginning. I have roughly around 10 of each lodestone types, 40 odd cores for each as well, probably all the metals required and around 100 globs.

Now I know that’s not a lot and people might say I still have a long road ahead before I can actually craft it, but the thought of affording the precursor itself is getting me a little excited.

I’m now kinda preparing myself on getting the mats right after I’ve purchased my precursor but would like some advice.

What is the rough estimate of gold I’ll be requiring for the mats left that I will be needing?

I have some rather valuable items on hand but have been holding on to them not knowing what to do.
Selling them on TP seems to be the right choice but through experience they seem to be slow moving items and chances of the item getting massively undercut and buried has put me off from listing them as of yet. What can I do about it?

Any form of help be it information or material would be greatly appreciated.

Donations are always welcome =D

TBH, I was once really addicted to GW2.
Was running FotM, dungeons and dailies like clockwork, right up until it became a chore to clear dailies and run FotM for the 15/20/25 ++ chest rewards, taking up long periods of my free time.
Was wondering if anything has changed since then, new dungeons, areas (like Southsun Cove) that might reinvigorate my interest.

Since I’ve already gotten 100% completion on more than 1 character, there really isn’t any open world content to look forward to unless new areas have been added.

(Besides weapons, heard they’re hard to craft with same stats as legendaries)
Since end game is very much similar to when I left, is there any appeal to revisit the game at all? All I did at that time was either running dungeons with friends and doing world events for a chance at precursor.
Just logged in and not many of the people I know still play this, is there any new dungeons or ways to acquire precursors now, or am I just looking at the same few dungeons in the past with seasonal events?

Conspiracy Theory
RMT Traders with the financial powers (gold) controlling the legendary market with their resources since botting is being bottlenecked.

Having enough resources to fan the market, they will still be able to control gold trade and make money off GW2 even without botting.

Tactic = Valid Strategy

Perfectly fine with it, that is why i stuck through 1+ hour of the dungeon regardless of how bad their strategy was in doing the console etc.

Knowingly Abusing a bug =/= Tactic

If the boss bugs out during normal combat, fine. It can’t be helped. But making an entire team die and abusing a loophole in the bosses A.I. by behaving in a certain predefined way so you can bug a boss and have it not attack you at all is exploiting, plain and simple.

I manage to get 1 name off Map chat.

Judith Aenir (saik.4275)
+ 2 others

Stormbuff Isle
CoE Dungeon Explorable Path 1 (Submarine) Time Stamp 1:55AM
Dungeon run where I was kicked from was around 3:13AM in case any dev’s needs to confirm my story.

Since I’m unable to report a player for knowingly abusing a game bug (no such option in game) I’ll leave it here in case any dev’s decides to take any action.

So today when I was doing CoE with a PUG who can’t seem to get anywhere, had to spend a couple of hours just getting through the route because most of them can’t dodge the alpha’s AoE circles.

During the last area, they decided to bug subject alpha by having everyone in the team die and reset in a certain way such that it will render the alpha immobile and not attack.

I refuse to do that and go about killing him the normal way. This however got me booted out of the dungeon.

Leaving me with no token or gold reward and having the abusers benefit from it.

Would like some dev’s to address some of the issues here.
1) PUG’s booting legit players who refuse to bug the bosses
2) Not being able to report them as once I’m booted out of the party, all form of party communications are deleted.
3) Not having any form of reward for dungeon unless fully completed.

2. If we are going by the Supply and Demand model, why are you assuming gems are unlimited? Should it not be in circulation only when players use RLC to buy them?
Going by how players are buying them, some are not receiving gems instantaneously, I would have to infer that they would only receive them once someone is willing to part ways with their gems at that current gold amount.
Which would make gem buyers grow with selling power while gold seller diminish in buying power.

3. If you look at this logically, gold will always be in abundance as players play while gems will not increase unless someone is willing to use RLC to exchange for them. Regardless, events will only increase the decrease rate of marginal returns of exchange rate in favour of gems but unless something is put into place, gold would most likely outgrow gem in supply, leading to 1g=1gem, in only a matter of time.
Eg. Players will demand less gems after events yes, but the demand for gems will always be higher than that of gold, so I don’t see how the exchange rate will not keep falling.

I have been playing the game since launch and have not really gotten into gem trading for cash items because at that point in time, I didn’t really have that much gold for that matter but currently when I have been intending to trade gold for gems, the prices seems to have dropped drastically.

Now I understand from other posts that the gem to gold market and vice versa is managed by Anet and with that in mind I have been wondering why prices for gem has raised by that high a margin.

Qn1) Does Anet have an exchange margin that they hope to maintain or are we currently running on a free, supply and demand market.

Qn2) If it is a controlled market, why are we seeing nothing being done when exchange rates have fallen as far as previously 1g=500gems to now 1g=149gems.
I understand that prices are somewhat tied to supply and demand but objectively gems are more sought after than gold and as time passes, in game gold becomes more abundant while gems becomes more scares. How does Anet intend to manage this?
Is there a bottomline that Anet hopes to maintain? If so why isn’t it being done, has it not reached that line yet?

Qn3) If it is a free market, the prices will drop till 1g=1gem due to laws of demand and supply, this will lead to a market failure where trading would stop. Hence leading to cash items only being bought with RLC. Is this the outcome Anet is looking for? If not what are the factors that I have overlooked that will prevent this from happening?
