What if I’m a charr? I hate these human gods! lol
I can see a way to have 4 different names for the 5 races, for instance:
fire: balthazar for humans, wolf for Norns, college of statics for Asura, iron legion flame technology for Charr, and cycle of noon for Sylvari.
I know, those are bad examples, but you get the idea, that different races uses different race teamed names.
What I did when playing my elementalist was:
Level 1-~60 use staff and just stay with fire, using this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQFAWnMIClNgNNAuMA0RABBALCAFgDgcJDBpAA
And just get used to things like:
Using blasts on your utilities for healing, swiftness or might+fury.
Switching between attunements for the most useful abilities.
After that (you can also just do it whenever you want, just have fresh air on the air specialisation tree unlocked for a lot of power) you should try out d/d in open world, with a build like this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vFAQJAoYnMIClNgNNAeOA0RggGATqABgPIA
Using D/D at level 60 I was just amazed at what more the Ele has to offer, while it lacks the dps and the range of the staff it trades it with more sustain, blast finishers on other skills, close combat and more things like that.
This is pretty much what I did when started to play ele, and I love my elementalist now.
(Oh, at 80 I also decided to hold a scepter for the first time, still no idea what the heck the potentials are for that weapon, so much blast)
While it sounds like a good idea, I can just imagine the flaming going around when elementalist nuking the area kills everyone+themselves. Maybe it could be that when you apply conditions it gives your team debuffs (with the mechanic on them), and damage or crits will let them have a unique vulnerability, making it so they take more damage.
No idea though, don’t play pvp a lot, just a quick idea I got.
Another tip while leveling in the open world: If you see Yellow mobs (ie: dolyaks, deer, stag, etc.), chances are no one has killed it in a very long time if at all. GW2 has a sliding bonus XP scale that increases the longer a mob has been alive in the open world. So when you are sort of off the beaten path, and you see yellow mobs like these, or even mobs in general that you think people haven’t dealt with, slay them all. The bonus exp alone in a group of say, 4 or 5 mobs will be worth more than doing an entire dynamic event.
Any sources on this? I didn’t know about this and it’s pretty interesting if it’s true.
For a new player you’re looking at this to statistically, oh well.
1: Gear
My general rule of thumb is, pick armor up which are better than yours, and only catch the rest up every 20 levels.
(Example, I’m leveling from 10-30, and in that process I have refreshed my old armor with what I’ve found, the gear I am not able to replace (Like for instance, a helmet you had from level 13) you can just buy a new one in the trading post)
I like to go with more precision, since I love seeing big numbers, but seeing the other posts you can better go with a focus on power.
2). Weapons
There are 3 main weapon sets (actually, they are the only 3 weapon setf for ele), staff, scepter/X (focus/dagger) or dagger/X( focus/dagger).
The good thing is, that for elementalist all the weapons are useful.
For leveling I sticked with the staff, it has a really clear role of:
fire=>damage, water=>healing, lightning=> control and earth=> condition damage&defense.
This, together with the lack of switching attunements to much in an intensive way lets you get used to the utility skills and the feel of the attunement with the switching of it.
Heck, one of the highest dps chains evolves around using 3 skills of cooldown on fire staff.
Scepter&Dagger are a lot more harder, while a staff fits the view as a caster, the dagger is generally used to support parts of your utility, while dagger is used for the real ninjas out there.
Scepter is generally the hardest to learn, (I’ve been leveling an ele, and after hitting 80+buying everything exotic (90 hours) I equiped a scepter for the first time.
Why? Scepter isn’t much about dealing a lot of damage, yes it has nice damageing skills, but it has more skills which can be combined to getter to buff yourself, but you get to know that later.
Dagger is the second weapon I learned to use, after level to 45 using staff I started using D/D, you can pretty much imagine a D/D elementalist flying through enemies, doing nice damage while keep a personal contact with them (until they’re dead of course).
So in short, I used staff until lvl 45 (I’ll explain it later) and went on with D/D.D/F and staff when I felt like it.
3). training
Suprise! I leveled my ele in 2 weeks and I can remember everything from it.
First of all, the first ~30 levels you should only get what you need in utility skills, and spare HPoints out for traits, while you do get full hero points from just leveling it’s nice to have an extra in the start.
What I did was getting a signet of fire, a glyph of storms, and after you completed your first trait line arcane blast. (editing in, signet of air is really useful for your first 45 levels)
Signet of fire is awesome, and hasn’t moved away from my skill bar for 8/9 of my elementalist playtime, it’s a straight dps increase to keep it, but it’s better to not use it.
glyph of storm is just a more utility like form of meteor shower, fire gives burning and is a little bit weak, ice gives chill (enemies move slower and hit slower) and is your second best defensive option, air gives your enemy pretty much 15-25 vulnerability (one vulnerability=1% damage)depending on how big they are, meaning it’s the best offensive spell, and earth is your best defensive skill, since it pulses blind 10 times, meaning that in that area your enemies is not going to be able to hit you for 10 times.
Then there’s also arcane wave, or you could use glyph of lesser elemental to have a buddy helping you.
Back to arcane wave, it does a decent amount of damage on a ~30 second cooldown, but the important part is that it’s a blast finisher.
GW2 has a certain mechanics that some skills have a specific mechanic, a field and a finisher.
A field is a thing on the ground and is generally the result of a spell, a finisher is only momentum but is also a result of a spell.
Scepter and dagger both has a lot of fields and finishers, but the staff only has 1 blast finisher (one of the most useful out there) and ALOT of fields.
And since that one blast finisher is also hard to comeby, the best thing you can do is to equip arcane wave, and have an instant blast finisher on demand.
And why are these combos so useful? you MIGHT ask, it’s because they are awesome and elementalist is one of the best ways to discover their true power.
you see, everytime you use the second and fourth skill on staff, there’s a small field which does damage to your enemies, right?
Now, if you use arcane wave on it you’ll do more damage (you gain 3 might) and with a trait you also gets 10 seconds of 20% extra crit!
And not only for damage, your staff water also has 2 water fields (#3), using an arcane wave in that will heal you and your allies!
I’m losing track here, oops.
4). HP gaining
Yes you automatically get all the hero points you need, but there’s no fun in that, just do like I do and, everytime you jump into the game you don’t think about a mathimathical way to earn XP fast, you just walk around in a world and get distracted, it can go from having a vista you’re determined to get, a weird conversation of 2 people obviously going to have sex, or any other weird stuff like walking around and suddently meet 50 people standing there, in that case just ask around, because there’s one particular event in the human areas which is cinematically just awesome.
Oh, and overall inventory problems? easy to fix
1). deposit all materials
2).go to the trading post and see if something is of some value in there
3 sell it
4 mystic forge or salvage the rest
4.5 deposit all materials and use the luck
5 go a merchant and click on sell junk (or do that first, doesn’t matter)
1.5 can be picking up the good stuff for yourself.
8 slot bags are btw really cheap in the trading post, go look for them.
And for your question, the best way of taking damage is avoiding damage, as a dagger/focus elementalist you are quick, with traits you can easily evade or dodge, whilke having most of your 4&5 skills to defend your self (I guess making yourself INVULNERABLE for 3 seconds is pretty "not dying, right?)
And about the traits, the first line you should get is fire, it is the straight damage line, let’s you do more damage, have shorter cooldowns, and make your time blasting fields easier while granting extra crit chance.
The second line comes at level 45, you can better pick air since there’s a trait granting you 25% movement speed, and some other super useful skills as well.
After you completed the second line you can go crazy and go unlock every other utility skill, teleporting around or spawning a shield to bash foes isn’t efficient, but can definitely be fun!
If you live in the europe you can just tell me, I might not be the best player of all time but I do know how newbs (and especialy newbs trying to get better) think, since I am always that person.
I’m sure you should take a choke point, use the massive AOEs to take crowded enemies down, while using the traps and melee to block of&skill any who managed to get close.
A really big example is standing on a one way corridor, put traps beneath your feet, shoot the enemies and move to the opposite direction of your enemy, forcing them to either take distance or eat the traps and die if there’s enough of them.
Leveling him the normal way, not that I have a different choice, but leveling a char and learning their skills&straits is fun for me.
Insta level 80 would be to much information, and to many things to play/adapt to.
Defending your guild hall, idea scrapped?

An idea could be that modrems do small raids at random times, and you could have an situation where the entire guild is asleep except one person and he uses defensive mechanisms to fight the entire thing of himself, and of course be the hero of the day!
But if they would loose, then reclaiming it should only be killing the monsters, not paying gold or anything.
Capes are dangerous, maybe you’ll fly into an airplane and get sucked into the motor.
Seriously though, it would be some kind of logical if they grab the idea of other no aim games like the valve shooters, whereas you can change the color of the crosshairs, to for instance bright light green with a black circle around it, would be awesome.
But if I was near some kind of good in all the game modes I would dream of build templates yea, dreaming time!
I’m so hyped thinking about the expansion I accidently forgot to leave a character slot open for the revenant!
Whoops
I thought you could upgrade the game in game through gems, which you can buy in physical boxes as well.
I, eh, haven’t really prepped for anything tbh.
I think I’m just going to wait until the x-pac hits and screw around leveling him together with my 4 other level 30 proffs.
Okido, sounds good, thanks a lot!
An elite spec for guardian which focuses on tanking, healing or support, 2 hand shield ftw. Hell call him Templar.
A ranger spec to fix pets, maybe so you can mount (or melt spirit) and change your f1-4 skills, also melts the spreaded damage back together.
I thought there was a post in the ranger forums about a hunter spec which gives ranger a rifle and replaces pets with preparation, quite interested in that as well.
Hello all, I’m a pretty new player (started in April including a big break) and I’m just looking for a fun far ranged profession to play.
Currently tried:
Warrior (80) I might retry it with the longbow, but the odds are low I’m ever going to be interested in warrior.
Engineer (70) While I like the amount of diversity the prof has and enjoys it, he doesn’t feel like a serious ranged prof.
Guardian(30) scepter doesn’t feel fun, and preference bunker guardian in pvp, dragon hunter would be interesting though.
Ranger (15) face of the ranged professions, I’ve been enjoying longbow+drake together with sword/greatsword, going to try shortbow sometime soon, been reading about a lot of hate towards him in the forums, which I feel like is putting me off, definitely going to try more before forming a serious opinion.
Mesmer (15) just greatsword+phantoms for leveling, feels fun but going to try more.
Necromancer (10) feels more melee based, and DShroud’s bolls don’t feel fun for me.
That’s all I’ve tried for now, anything I’ve been totally misunderstanding? How is it with the other professions?
Thief is close ranged for probably ever and I don’t enjoy stealthy gameplay in other games, not sure how it is with revenant, tried elementalist but didn’t liked the mechanics, felt to tired after playing him.
Second topic: shouts
I like them, they feel powerful and fun when I’m playing bunker guardian with shouts, and since shoutbow is apparently meta now I might try him, I just dumped my warrior since with leveling I felt like I had to stick with the greatsword, on which I find 2 the most boring and stupid skill to be loved and used by everyone, I also seems like I can get rid of the greatsword in anything except conquest, but that might just be me.
Ranger shouts doesn’t look interesting, but that might just be me, any tips?
Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but since this is talking about all the professions I thought posting them in the generals would be good.
I currently have a:
Charr necromancer ash
Charr engineer iron
Charr ranger blood
With the first two having charm and third having ferocity.
I love the Charr, and they are in the top races to play for me, human and sylvari just feel boring and real, Asura are awesome in that they are such braggers about themselves and Norn with their simple happiness.
The only problem I can have with Charr is the bigness (feels slow walking) and weird armor bugs, further I really like the 4 feet running animation and think it realizes how an animal race like Charr are.
I also really enjoy their personal stories, while I find it sad I’ll always end up with rytlock (he’s awesome though) and think they are one of the most interesting stories.
Now lets talk about why the focus, a magic casting item is better for close range and shield, a short range physical weapon is better for ranged.
Seriously, I never feel nice using a scepter+shield and sword/mace with focus, it just doesn’t make any sense for me.
Xp scales, you’ll gain the same or more amount of experience in levels with a lower area.
You are not locked out of anything, you don’t have to be level 25 to get to a 25 place, give yourself a challenge!
Also, there’s no need to 100% every place you see, while it gives a good experience boost just running around in same/lower areas doing events or hearts will be much faster.
Eh, I’m kind of sad about the nerf of guardian.
As a pretty new player I’m still trying everything out, and after 10 rounds of engineer I wanted to try something else, got my guardian with some bunker build from internet.
And it was the most fun I’ve ever had in spvp, the tankness, support, the numerous pop ups like “most healing done, most boons on allies” just felt amazing!
I truly had fun with him, I really feel attached (even after like 5 games) to him and I’m going to play him even more. He didn’t felt stupidly op, and I generally died with myself doing a bad rotation and stuff.
On the other hand, I only found out that feel my wrath gives quickness which higher skill cast time, I thought it was fury and swift :/
Meh, thinking about it I’m not even really sad about it, and mace+shield (Classic Templar set) would look awesome!
Wasn’t there a thing where dragons are just mindless and just want to eat and sleep like a normal animal instinct, but champions have will on their own and can strategize and plan attacks on civilizations.
I actually would like a way so I can run on four paws when using a kit, I love the animation but I’m to lazy to keep switching back to the primary weapon.
I would’ve been happy if they would be like signets, giving you a passive affect while floating around you. This way I can just go with FT and 2 drones and burn everything.
Oh well, I’m to bad to give him a serious opinion.
But what if you have 2 different weapons and you have your build focused on one of the, and uses the other weapon for a certain mobility skill?
In that case when you use the mobility weapon and you get surprised you won’t be able to switch to your main weapon to fight the enemy.
For instance you normally use P/P on engie and have a rifle for the rocket jump, and you get surprised while having the rifle out instead of the pistols.
While with engineers they are still kit related, but it still would hurt a lot.
For elementalist a I can only imagine this would be worse.
(Newb here, so I might be totally wrong)
I think I’m pretty excited for having a hammer, what if people who had the game before it went free or the people who prepurchased HoT can have an exclusive skin for their main weapons?
While elementalist, warrior, ranger etc. has weapons which kind of looks fitting, having a special staff staff skin for thieves, a wrench like hammer (depends on what the skills would be), and maybe something so longbows look more dragonly for guardians.(Btw, pretty new to the gw forums and I might be used to the steam forum “rules” more, excuses for that.)
There actually are special skins for the elite spec weapons, you can unlock them at the elite spec tracker. Look at the hammer the forge is wielding on the pic. This is the skin forge will get. Same for the other elite specs, they get the weapon skin on their reveal picture.
But these are not exclusive for veterans, everyone playing hot can unlock them at the elite spec tracker.
Ah,that makes sense, thanks!
About the steam hammers, (and the post above), would a weapon which focuses on burst (steam power) be fitting for an engineer? The mechanic sounds more like something a thief would use, but still.
The other thing is that in the hammers there’s a movement based energy regenerator, being stronger the more skills you use on it in a single fight.
While I do heavily lack in experience from what I’ve seen from other people trying to drag a fight out so long isn’t smart, especially since with a weapon which starts weak every time you’re very vulnerable for ambushes.
What about having a mace and use it as a wrench while running around yelling Texan stuff?
(Tf2 reference, but a mace would be cool)
But that sounds like a full defensive build, while a hammer is power defensive build.
It also wouldn’t fit with the theme, engineers only use technical stuff and elixirs, and there wouldn’t be a reason for them to use a medieval loadout with the mace+shield.

That sounds nice, thanks!
Noob here:
I started leveling engineer, he’s really fun and interesting to play and I’m quite interested in the forge because he’s the first profession I knew which didn’t knew the elite details when I started following hoT. (Planning on getting it even as a very casual player)
What information is out about it and when will we get more information?
I know he’ll use a hammer (I think it’s his only melee weapon set together with the tool kit, bombs don’t count).
The drones seem interesting, maybe they will be AI which follows you, maybe they are sentries which move in a certain pattern to guard a place.
I don’t know about either of them since I have to little experience about engineer and the game overall to comment on it.
How will the information be released? Would it be bit by bit in the next week or would it be one stream where all the information gets revealed?
Thank you:)
I prefere having an outfit or 2 for my leveling characters, because if I have a certain skin for an armor piece, I would have to pay more transformation charges to keep my armor leveled to some extend.
And it would mean that I can’t wear it on my other characters.
Of course, there’s just a big of a chance I’m totally wrong, I’m only playing the game now since May with a lot of breaks for other games.
