Closing on 5k hours, and that’s all I really need to speak for myself on. As people know me. getting me to do 5 hours of anything is impossible if I’m not willing, so it’s quite an accomplishment if I compare it against my previous choices (Starcraft II -750 hours), (Diablo 3 ~ 500 hours) Although I might not hold the game’s mechanics in that high regard, a lot of it is still fun to pick up though I really think the experience was enhanced by the presence of friends or guilds playing it. I sort of understand if people prefer the solo or small group experience and feel left out.

The best part about Guild Wars 2 is the general freedom of choice when it comes to setting goals, and WvW I think is the ideal place for that kind of thing, at least not for someone like me that can’t be esports enough to do highend pvp or pve. Also, I’m quite a fan of the soundtrack.

Anyhow, glad you enjoyed yourself.

I very much agree with you man. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Skenderbeu.9102

Hey!

I run GW2 on GTX970+i74790k with 600W PSU, 500 GB Samsung HDD, 60 Hz monitor and Z97-K Asus motherboard.

All of my settings are set to low except for shaders which are put on high+my CPU is OC’d up to 4.6 ghz, tempratuares are fine.

I play this game in massive WvW threesomes with around 50 FPS but with Effect LODs being turned on (reduces blooming+particle effects of CCs)

If I turn Effect LOD off I get down to 20 FPS in the same fights. What could be the problem here?

Q: If you are sitting on 50 FPS in WvW on a 60 Hz monitor will the smoothness be the same if you are sitting on 50 FPS on a 144 Hz monitor?

Would you get any benefit from upgrading a 60 Hz monitor into a 144 Hz one in a scenario such as this?

Effect LOD fps drops

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Skenderbeu.9102

Skenderbeu.9102

Hi

I run GW2 on these settings and these settings.

CPU: i7-4790k@4.6 Ghz
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 4GB

Usually I sit around 60-70 fps most of the time in WvW. If I unmark Effect LOD though I drop all the way down to 20-30. I’d really like to have it unmarked but since it’s causing me a tremendous fps drops I cannot do this and I have to keep it marked which prevents me from seeing important enemy crowd control effects like wards of lining, static fields, veils, et.c, et.c.

Anything that can be done here? Appreciate all help =) I just wanna be able to see more crowd control effects and not red rings only

Cheers

May be you put the graphics card into the wrong slot. Most motherboards have 2 or even 3 x16 pci-express slots for sli/crossfire, but if you use only one graphics card, this card must be put into one specific slot and you cannot choose one of them. Often it is the slot closest to the CPU.

Hahaha it is put in the 2nd GPU slot so you might just be correct! I’ll put it on the first one and see what happens! Thanks!

EDIT: Ok, I put it in the first GPU slot and it did make a huge difference, 4790k working fine now

I suggest CoreTemp and Prime95 for testing Overclocks.

CoreTemp will show you each Cores % utilization, VID (Compare against CPU-Z), and each cores Temps.

Where Prime95 has 2 tests, Blend(over all system) and small FFT. The FFT is more for your CPU’s Temp as it hits the GPU engine in your CPU for testing, as where Blend is what you would traditionally use for an over all OC stress test for stability.

Intel’s burn in is good for a ‘last ditch’ effort, as it doesn’t tell you what you need to know.

Also your CPU is hitting 80c’s, which is ‘fine’ as the tj max is 100C on these CPUs (when you throttle)

Hitting 4.7GHz on a 4790k at 1.19v might be part of your issue.

The average for the 4790k’s is 4.6ghz at 1.25v, and going to 4.7ghz usually requires 1.288v(IIRC). So its very possible you do not have a stable enough OC on that CPU.

My 4790K hits 5ghz at 1.4v(83c), 4.9ghz at 1.38v(78c), and 4.8ghz at 1.35v(75c), and 4.6ghz at 1.25v(66c). Use that as a comparison when you are OCing that chip.

Also, you need to run programs like Prime95 for 2-3 hours before you can call your system stable. A 30min burn in test does not yield a stable OC.

Got it boss, I’ll try all of this, thank you once again

Ensure that vertical sync is disabled in-game and that it isn’t being forced under the NVIDIA control panel.

You may also need to reset your GW2 settings by deleting the folder
%appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ and the file Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat.

Tried what you said, didn’t work…

I would like to add that during a stresstest of having the CPU working on 100% this is what happens:

Skenderbeu.9102

Hi, I am extremely disappointed.

Today I upgraded my i7 2600k into a i7 4790k for GW2 in hope of improved performance regarding frames per second, I don’t know what happend.

When I played with my i7 2600k I used to have around 270-300 fps when standing still in a spot that didn’t have a lot of people, and the camera wasn’t laggy.

With my i7 4790k I have MAX (when standing on the same spot with the same circumstances) 60fps, and the camera is fps dropping like crazy, literally goes down to 40 at times. I haven’t tried this out in WvW yet (still waiting for queue as I’m writing) but I imagine the fps will drop to about 1 or 5, somewhere between those parameters…

My computer specs are:
CPU – i7 4790k @ 4.8 Ghz
GPU – GTX 750
Motherboard – Z97-K
RAM – 8 GB
P. Supply – Corsair 600W
Cooler – Noctua NH-D15

Some of you might think that it’s a bottleneck issue but I doubt it. Back when I was running my i7 2600k with the GTX 750 I went to the store and bought a GTX 770 to replace it and the difference in fps was non-existent

All of my drivers are up-to-date and the cooling is great, it tops at 50 celsius.

I do not know what the problem is please if any of you have any ideas to share with me feel free to I am open to any suggestions. Am in dire need of help please reply

I run everything on lowest graphics.

Cheers guys

Skenderbeu.9102

If I found the same board as in its just called Asus Z97-K, then yes it will take the CPU and RAM ok, the SSD will also be fine, the PSU should be ok also, as for the cooler, I found the NH-D15 and it looks massive, I could not say for sure if it will fit, hopefully someone on here has used it or seen it in a case to see how much spacing it has.

Most coolers will fit most boards now, from what ive seen its more the case that’s the limiting factor.

Are you building this yourself or buying it built?

Thank you for your reply, I am building it myself :p, just replacing my current
i7-2600k and Z77 motherboard with something new since I’m looking to upgrade my CPU. The fan fits perfectly fine on the Z77 motherboard I currently have and inside of the case, Im just afraid of getting a motherboard that will not fit, as you’ve previously mentioned

i7-2600k vs i7-4770k?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Skenderbeu.9102

Skenderbeu.9102

short answer, no.

long answer – at best your only looking at a possible 20% increase from Sandy to Haswell (8-10% per generation, Sandy is 2 gens behind Haswell), and thats if you are even able to match the clock speeds.

Also, you’d want a 4790K. They tend to OC better and hold voltages better then the 4770K. The cost is the same. I can push mine to 4.6ghz 1.25v. But I also pull a stock clock setting of 4ghz.98v. This is really rare for this CPU.

You would also be looking at a new motherboard for the socket 1150 i7. $329 for the CPU, $89-$139 for a decent Z97/Z87 motherboard.

Thats a $500~ upgrade for a possible 20% increase. IMHO, just for GW2, not really worth it. It would have to be 45%-65% of a performance increase for me to recommend it, in all honesty.

P8Z77-V doesn’t work with 4790k?

Can't overclock +4.3 ghz anymore?

Skenderbeu.9102

Hi there! Please help

I have an i7-2600k OC@4.3 Ghz together with a GTX 750 and it runs smooth as silk CPU-wise and FPS is OK at times but can drop heavily.

Anyways I got a GTX 760 now and needed to upgrade my PSU up to 500W but went for 600W and everytime I try to overclock my i7 it doesn’t exceed past 3.6 Ghz, why is this? It is very disturbing… having spent so much money on GPU+PSU only not to get results, I am very disappointed…

Could someone please explain this to me?

Skenderbeu.9102

No, no, no, the FPS issue has always been there and I’ve strongly considered the GPU being at fault here, thank you for clarifying it for me once more, thank you so much. Also how come all the X60-X80 GPUs in the GTX series are so much better than the X50 ones?

Because the higher end chips have more silicon transistors. 570 had 3 billion while the 750 has 1.8 billion. With twice the texture mapping units, render outputs and memory bandwidth. In terms of (stock) performance its about 1.5-2x faster than a 750. (For comparison, a current gen 770 has 3.5 billion transistors and a 780ti has 7.1 billion.)

While new more efficient architecture and higher clock speeds can make up some of the difference in performance, the “high end” 570 isn’t quite old enough yet to be outdone by a low end card.

Wow, lol… good explanation!!

Same CPU+GPU but low fps

Skenderbeu.9102

GTX 750 and cards alike aside. I’ve played on a GTX650 that runs perfectly fine in Guild Wars 2 on 1080p with an i5 setup(Medium/High Graphics). A GTX 750 can’t really compare to a 570 though. GTX 550/650/750 are all meant to be mid level/low end video cards. While 570/670/770 are supposed to be right under the performance of a GTX 480/580/680/780. So you won’t have the same GPU performance as he does.

However, graphics cards most likely aren’t the issue here.

So here is a question.

Were you having perfectly fine FPS before the Feature pack patch? If so, you most likely fall into the problem that a lot of us are having right now. The latest patch is, which was supposed to fix and improve game performance and optimization, actually did quite the oposite for a lot of players.

Here is a reddit thread where a lot of us have been discussing the issues.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2g9cpt/performance_issues_since_patch/

A lot of us who used to get 100+ fps (60 constant if vsynced) now get 40-50fps and stuttering issues. Check out the thread, see if it matches any issues you’ve been having.

Hey everybody thank you for clicking on this thread, it is appreciated.

I have an i7-2600K overclocked to 4.3Ghz with a GTX 750 that is also fully clocked. I also have an HDD and 8GB of RAM, yet I lag tremendiously in big WvW fights, f.g 40v40, 20v50, 25v40 et.c. Big numbers.

Vsync is off and my FPS caps up to 250 when standing still, all my settings are set to low, no shadows and render sampling is set to subsample. (I sometimes set it to native because it helps vs bigger blobs, I don’t know why?) Anyhow, my friend almost has the exact same rigg as I have above:

• i7-2600K@4.3Ghz
• GTX 570 (it’s like 2 years old)
• SSD
• 8 GB of RAM

And he has no GW2 FPS issues whatsoever, it is perfect even in blobfights. Not only that but he can stream while playing the game and blobbing, and the quality of the stream is great@720p. Also he does not have the settings set to as low as I have his settings are set to medium+

Stream is live right now: http://www.twitch.tv/aghars
If not just look at some vids and quality of them and how flawless it is.

Could somebody please help me understand this? I am clueless and I have considered buying a new GPU because I believe this is the problem, I am not sure however.

What can I do to fix this? What is going on? Why is my computer this incapable despite having a rigg almost similar to my friend’s?

On the plus side nice editing, solid play and decent music.

As for a critique, I would like to hear narration (or popups) as to why you counter the way you do. I also think it makes for a better video to see builds designed to counter your play. In this case, a solid corrupting condi necro would be a more difficult fight. Cropped videos of fights against non-counter builds aren’t very interesting (at least to me). In particular, watching players press the attack when you are sitting that boon heavy makes for some big shots but not really interesting play.

GPU upgrade for WvW HELP

in WvW

Posted by: Skenderbeu.9102

Skenderbeu.9102

General rules of thumb.

1. You can never go wrong with more CPU in multiplayer games, most of all the really “big” ones like WvW, Battlefield, etc that can have a ton of players and player created action. On a very basic level, think about why you get FPS drop near a zerg, even before you system has a to render a single player or effect caused by the zerg battle.

2. More GPU is for the eye candy. Better texture quality, better shading, filtering, and higher levels of filtering. All this improves perceived image quality.

So to your answer question, you need a better GPU if you want to run higher graphic settings with acceptable performance. Your FPS on low settings is already not that bad (30+ in a 30v30v30 is pretty good for most players). The 750 is right at the bottom end of what would be considered a gaming card. If you want those things like better shading, good texture quality, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, etc…a 770 or 280x is kinda the sweet spot now for performance and value for money.

I think you’re also leaving a little on the table with your CPU overclock. 4.5-4.6 should be fine with a decent heatsink and an adequate case setup. That little extra will make a difference in minimum FPS in blob battles. As for upgrading that too, it’s hard to say. I still use a 2500k @ 4.8 GHz and see no compelling reason to upgrade yet, at least from a value for money perspective.

Thank you for your thorough response, it is very appreciated! Yes I did try overclocking my i7 above 4.3Ghz but it doesn’t work unfortunately, I get blue screen moment I get into desktop or at some early point when I start up GW2, sadly enough…

You likely did the overclocking incorrectly and/or your current setup could not handle it.

I checked with CPU-Z and the number X was there. But I believe I can only raise the multiplier up to 43 ratio (4300 mhz) and not more since it’s within that radius 16-43, system can probably not handle.

Did you adjust the voltages?

Yeah they at 1.500

I have another question though, can also my HDD be a problem in this entire mess?

GPU upgrade for WvW HELP

Skenderbeu.9102

GW2 has terrible multi-core performance. I have a Radeon R9 270 2GB and (get this) an AMD 6800k APU with the graphics component turned off. That leaves me with 3 non-hyperthreaded cores, but it’s overclocked to 5Ghz. 8GB of DDR 2133 system mem. I run everything at high (with Supersampling), except I put character model limit and detail at medium. I maintain 50-60 FPS even with about 100 or more people in an open field zerg battle. I can even record 1080p live-compressed video at those settings without much of a dip in FPS — it’ll go to about 40 or so.

Clock speed and single-core performance is a huge deal in GW2. The R9 270 is not even a top-end GPU, and the 6800k APU is not even close to a top-end CPU — but at 5Ghz, it performs extremely well.

Thank you! I guess CPU is more important I guess? Or maybe it’s just your AMD Proccessor?

God kitten man, your rig is amazing I feel so bad for you, this is what makes me so sceptical to buying new stuff to my computer just for GW2. It makes me extremely uneasy…

The plus side is a play a lot more games than just GW2. GW2 also runs with all the highest settings in PvE. Unfortunately I don’t play PvE.

The sad part is my laptop (i7 Haswell, 32GB RAM, SSD but with integrated graphics) runs it just as well at a slightly lower res.

Seems the game is mostly CPU bound but there seems to be a CPU core wall. I am curious to see how fast it runs on a Dual Core OC’d. I would not be surprised if it ran much better.

We have a workstation we are building in the office that has 128GB RAM, 2 Xeon 10 core processors and an SSD array. The graphics card is crap though. I will load it up tomorrow and see what it can do in WvW.

Do that and please showcase the results it would be awesome

GPU upgrade for WvW HELP

WvW is going to bring down your fps no matter your card.

Still, a Geforce 780 Ti is about 2-2.5x faster than that little Geforce 750. Look its simple math – the longer the video card, the better it is. Yours is too short you see. Even the width is lacking. A 750 has about 80gb/s bandwidth. A 780 has ~300gb/s or something.

Whether you want to upgrade… Meh that’s your choice. Of course a better card is going to get pricey. Not to mention noisy, if your aim actually is HTPC.

I would strongly advice holding upgrades for a couple of months as prices are highly likely to drop – Geforce 870 and 880 is on the horizon and older versions usually get a cut.

Hmm… makes sense. Thank you =)

One of the recent patches has really slowed the game on my system. I finally killed every graphical option and I am running OK most of the time. This bothers me mainly because my rig is in the upper high end (i7 Haswell OC’d, Fast 16GB Memory, SSD and a GTX770 also OC’d). Contrast that to nearly 100 FPS in Farcry 3 at 1080P and a 13k 3DMark.

I cannot get the game to use much over 50 percent CPU even though it clearly needs more. I suspect some kitten poor multi-threading in the client. Oh and my CPUs are not parked.

God kitten man, your rig is amazing I feel so bad for you, this is what makes me so sceptical to buying new stuff to my computer just for GW2. It makes me extremely uneasy…

You need to determine how many of your CPU cores are locked for a specific purpose. I have an i5 2500K and found out that 3 of my 4 cores were locked, meaning that they could only be used for OS specific purposes. Try here – https://bitsum.com/about_cpu_core_parking.php

Yes, I had some of my cores locked aswell, unlocked them by viewing some guide on YouTube did not make any difference, maybe it’s not as good as ParkControl, I’ll try with PC and see if it makes any difference, thank you!

No matter how good your GPU, GW2 will simply not utilise it properly.
Until, IF, DX11 is ever supported; your best option is for a better CPU, not GPU.

He posted that his GPU is 100% utilization so I’m not sure how you can say that. He also can’t really improve on his CPU, it’s 4.3GHz i7.

Best advice is to get on your server’s WvW voice chat and see if there are people with expensive GPUs, what kind of fps they get and what settings they run.

Thank you, I will try this =)

General rules of thumb.

1. You can never go wrong with more CPU in multiplayer games, most of all the really “big” ones like WvW, Battlefield, etc that can have a ton of players and player created action. On a very basic level, think about why you get FPS drop near a zerg, even before you system has a to render a single player or effect caused by the zerg battle.

2. More GPU is for the eye candy. Better texture quality, better shading, filtering, and higher levels of filtering. All this improves perceived image quality.

Why no GvG ANet?

Guild Versus Guild could be added in form of battlegrounds for 10v10 20v20 30v30 40v40 50v50 and so on.
But, this would require design of new maps, with missions (such as take or return the flag) and a big space in the middle for fighting; not to mention design for guilds to challenge each other, and for officer to accept the challenge with selected members from guild.
The idea is easy. The design and programming is the hard part. And in the end the reward will be small because customers will not buy more items (except finishers) from Trading Post just because they have GvG.

Let them release it with an expansion I’d buy it for 60 dollars hands down as long as that gamemode is there =)

Running settings on low, in a 30v30v30 fight I get about 30-40 fps. In a 30v30 fight about 40-50fps, relatively okay.

CPU: Intel i7-2600k OC’d to 4.3Ghz.
GPU: GeForce GTX 750 OC 1GB.

GPU* is bottlenecking, I believe this is why my fps drops a ton sometimes also I cannot run this game in medium graphics in WvW because the lag gets worse. I want to be able to run this game on medium/high so that I can render more people in WvW and see them instead of only seeing their red names above their heads and their invisible bodies. Hard to land important CC that way.

CPU MAX Usage: 35% on task manager.
GPU MAX Usage: 100%.

Anyone has similar problems as mine? Is it just my GPU that needs an upgrade or is it the CPU too? Will a GPU from the 770 series give me an incredible boost to my graphics+fps or is it just a waste of money? I’ve been hearing a lot of broscience lately on GW2 graphics+fps on WvW, please someone set me straight with facts and evidence of any truth.

Regards, Krisi.

Well the thing I have been trying to push here is that most times you see people asking for GvG, they specifically state that 5v5 is not large enough. And I don’t see how adding a few (e.g. less than doubling the amount) would be any different, particularly when you consider that it would still amount to worst case scenario of covering 2% of your guild membership.

This thread did not seem to be about team size from what I could see. The OP did not mention team size in either his title nor his post. Did someone else, other than you of course, bring it up ?

No I did not mention it you are correct :p. But I just want to see a proper GvG structure with queues where guilds can queue up and play 15v15, 20v20, 25v25, deathmatch mode, no lords to kill, no points to cap, just plain and simple GvG DM, et.c. Maybe a highscore leaderboard. I’d like not to see this game get pushed into an e-sport and I highly doubt it will especially from the GvG perspective, it’s too chaotic and the community might worsen because of all the elitism e-sports would bring, I think. These are just some of my thoughts :p
