I apologize for my negative disposition with HOT. I have posted on a few threads over the years about my dissatisfaction with HOT, and I see many familiar defenders of HOT on this thread. I do find resonance with this OP, and many others that have had similar experiences. It feels like the conversation hasn’t really evolved though. Many new players enjoy core Tyria, and run into a wall in HOT. They make their point on the forum, and there’s almost a professional team of posters ready to smack them down with honed arguments of why the OP’s experience isn’t valid. So I will retire for a few months again and see if things have changed. Good luck OP, there are people out there that understand your experience of HOT and support your point of view.

Yeah, I’m with you. I decided to uninstall GW2. I have no interest in this different game called HOT. It’s not my cup of tea. It is sad. Got back into the game, made the climb to 80 and really enjoyed the core game. But HOT killed the entire game for me in under 2 days. I’m gonna go play xcom2 The long war 2. Good luck.

I don’t agree….. I think HoT was a massive change from core gw2……. This has nothing to do with difficulty of enemies…… The game became more of a player vs map game. The HoT maps have an obstacle course feel to them…………

Not to mention the many changes of other components(guild influence system changed, gated content, nintento style adventures, farming requirements increased from core game)

That sort of stuff existed in the game from day one. Vistas at the end of jumping puzzles is the easiest example. That was player vs. map.

The anti was upped in Dry Top which is absolutely player vs. map.

It’s not like this suddenly happened with HoT.

Hell even South Sun showed signs of it and that was released only months after the game came out.

Not even close. If I didn’t want to do a jumping puzzle, it didn’t impact my game progression at all. Almost all vistas were easy to get to and didn’t really require the same amount of mario bros skills that HOT maps do.

So something that was rare and optional became constant and required in the expansion.

What it comes down to is Vesica just doesn’t like the fact that others have something negative to say about his ‘favorite thing’ that he has so much loyalty to that it could never be faulty in any way. Some people are like that. They will defend their ‘thing’ to the very end. It’s a very partisan existence.

It’s very simple. When a product I buy changes its formula that is very different from what it was, I don’t buy it anymore. Just like corn nuts and brummels and brown. I used to love them, but they changed (for the worse to me). So now they don’t get my money.

Now you will have people defend corn nuts and brummels and brown and attack anyone who might point this out and claim that people should expect those recipes to change and just adjust and keep buying them. But that product no longer meets my tastes and somehow I’m the one that expects too much. Bashing people like me doesn’t help your favorite ‘thing’ as the customer base shrinks. You are not doing it any favors. And yet you want to insinuate that I’m the one with some sort of psychological issue.

The issue is that you will always find fault if you pick things out in isolation. There are 37 zones in GW2, 3 have verticality that is complained about. 90 % of the maps are flat, the the latest maps in HOT are flat. some people enjoy having 8% of the maps that are not flat. GW2 did not become a bad product because someone doesn’t like 8% of the maps.

Now add on that, one of the posters also doesn’t like changes in LOTR, RIFT, TSW as well and you have a pattern there and 1 common factor.

Stop trying to be a shrink. That is condescending and rude.

HOT came out a hear and a half ago, some like it some don’t. However, there’s been a year and a half of discussions and posts and videos and reviews. There comes a time when you are responsible for your own choices in life. If you bought a game you don’t like that doesn’t make the game bad, that meas you made a poor choice. If you don’t like a wide range of products in a genre then maybe just maybe your tastes have changed and that genre aint for you anymore.

For your information, I bought the game when it first came out. I played it a while and then shelved it. Finally I got back into it. I didn’t think the expansion would be so vastly different from the main game. But yes, from the mmo track record of kittenty expansions, I should have done some research before buying it or investing any time into the original game again.

I’d like to say that I too have decided to give up after just a short time with the Heart of Thorns expansion. I loved the main game. Yes, the fights are tougher in HOT, but that wasn’t what really drove me away from the game.

It’s the zones. Gawd, I hate the zones to no end. Why do MMO expansions always screw up the game with horrible zones? I don’t like playing mario bros. If I wanted to play that I would. I don’t want my entire game focus with maps revolving around magic bouncing mushrooms and other platformer crap like that. The jumping puzzles were bad enough in the main game, but at least I could ignore them. But not with the expansion. Now that is a main focus. No thank you. The zones gave me a headache and I felt I spent so much time trying to move around the map instead of actually accomplishing anything at all. Bored out of my mind.

I’m sick and tired of finding an MMO I enjoy, only to see the first expansion fundamentally change the game I was playing. It happened with LOTRO with Moria and beyond. It happened with tokyo in The Secret World (kitten you aegis). It happened in Rifts with their stupid alien landscapes. So many others too. Stop kittening up your games and just give us more of the game we came to play.

It strikes,
Small damage -> Medium damage -> Large damage
on a timed cascade. It is 3 sepperate attacks. I’m not sure but I think it’s 5 targets per each packet for a total of 15 possible strikes spread over 15 unique foes, similar to Berserker’s Scorched Earth longbow burst skill.

An enemy can only be struck by this ability once per unique cast. Because it cascades it is possible to get two strike checks on the ending/leading edges of 2 packets. This was causing huge damage so it was fixed to only strike once with a hidden cooldown of some sort preventing a second strike. I imagine it functions similar to fire aura’s 1sec cooldown per unique attacker.

For example,
I occasionally cast CoR while blinded and I both miss and strike with a single cast.

Thanks to those of you who cleared this up for me. The wording on this is very misleading. I was thinking this was going to be the mains source of dps for this build. Seems lackluster now.

I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t purchased the Heart of Thorns upgrade now. After reading this forum, I’ll probably go back to my engineer or ranger. It’s too bad, because I like the idea of the play mechanics of the Rev. But if it can’t perform, it’s pointless.

it does a total of kitten across the 3 phases of dmg

It does three attacks, each one cascading outwards, but they do not overlap.

So if phase 1 hit 5 times phase 2 and 3 deal 0 dmg

It can hit a maximum of 5 players total. Each attack being AOE, but as mentioned not overlapping.

Basically means this skill is God tier at range an in melee it meh.

The first attack is weak, but gains damage with each cascade. With the final hit dealing lots of damage at 900-1200 range, but being fairly weak in melee.

Hope that helps.

So basically it’s only one attack with different damage values at 3 different ranges? So any one target will always only get hit once. But if multiple mobs are in the area at different ranges they will take the damage that correlates to their range, but still only hit once each?

Can someone please explain the hammer ability Coalescence of Ruin?

The tooltip says it hits 3 times, with 3 strikes on the ground. I have used it many times but I only ever see one strike and one damage number in my combat log when I use it. Seems rather underwhelming if it is only going to hit one.

What am I missing? I’ve even taken my other hammerbolt off of auto attack just so I can isolate COR and I still only ever see one damage striker per usage of the skill.

I very much dislike the elite skills for the Guardian. Made the mistake of making my first character a norn. All but one elite skill replaced all my other skills. Didn’t find this out till level 30. Character deleted.

Just spent an hour farming low level bandits, and doing several events like the ones where they try and blow up the pipes. I’m an over leveled ranger and all I got to show for it was 23 jute scraps in an hour. That sucks, and it makes me more likely to log out instead of playing.

Same problem with Rift when it went live. You would think that GW2 team would have learned that and had this addressed early on. But much like so much other stuff, it didn’t get done.

I agree. The general movement in this game feels way too slow. It makes my A.D.D. want to pull me away from my computer. About a 20-25% increase would be better with some options in gear to make it faster.

You should also have no problems with story quests at all. They are all designed to be terribly easy and can all be done both undergeared and in terribly bad trait sets.

B.S.

There are other threads about how terribly difficult the personal story quest lines are for some class/races. As a norn/guard, most of my storyline quests end up with me dying multiple times until most of my equipment is broken. Example A would be the ice imps/elementals with the horn early on for one of the Norn story lines.

I totally agree with the original poster. Especially in the Norn story line with the ice imps and the horn. Within several mins I was completely naked and spent another 10 min finishing that scenario while being one shotted because all my equipment was damaged.

I absolutely HATE the level scaling in the personal story quests. They are too hard for many classes and it ends up just being a corpse jump grind.

Guardian Elite skills?

First of all, keep in mind that there are RACIAL elite skills and PROFESSION elite skills. The “turn into x animal” elite skills are given to you because you are a norn. An Asura Guardian turning into a bear would be a bit silly now, wouldn’t it?

That being clarified , I’ve never tried any of those racial elites but as far as I know, Anet decided to make them weaker then class-specific elites so I wouldn’t spend my skill points on those. Try the one called renewed focus, it’s really helpful when you need that extra tankiness.

And if your unfortunate enough like me to pick NORN, then your screwed because all of theirs are forms that replace your skills. Sucks that I have to get 30 levels to find out that the WORST race/class combo in the game for elites is a norn guardian. Now I’m at the point where I’m re-rolling. Seriously, no non-form options for norn? What were they thinking?

Guards should get more health. They don’t need as much as warriors, but why are they on the lowest tier in the game? Doesn’t make sense to me. And at least now I know why I’ve had such a hard time with my storyline quests trying to do those solo. Its rediculess how often I’m nearly one shotted and two shotted. And for those saying to play only a certain skill/weapon set, well that invalidates the point of having the options in the class.

So yes, they need a health bump up to the middle tier.

The deleveling should be optional and toggled on or off as the player desires. If he wants to go back and do content he had difficulty with at earlier levels, he should be able to. And if he wants to get good exp and play with friends then he should be able to toggle on his deleveling. I just don’t understand why the player doesn’t have the choice, it seems like a win win to give them the option.

I have found the norn/guardian to be the worst set of elite skills in the entire game. All but one of them replace your skills. And that one makes you invuln for 3 secs and resets your virtues BUT you can’t do anything during those 3 seconds.

Until I can get enough gems in game for the upgrade to the collector’s bonus of mistwolf, I’m shelfing my norn/guardian.
