If you don’t want to “waste” time on them play a good singleplayer RPG
Its not a “waste”, its a boring waste of time to walk around the same area once a day, pick the same crystals, and upgrade the same material once a day, to craft armor after a month of doing that.
Which sounds more legendary, a sword you played 52 pick up once a day for a year to obtain, or a sword that you had to kill every dragon in the game to upgrade to legendary?

Under “Legendary Gear and Precursors”
“On top of this, you’ll also see new legendary weapons and new types of legendary gear in 2013”
Can we expect some more time gated collect-a-thon with mandatory crafting? Or will it actually be fun, more like how the Halloween boots were awarded – actually completing legendary feats for legendary gear?
IMO, one is content, the other is crap. InB4 !!legendary achievement – kill 5,000 boars!!
For real real. I cant really think of anything to say that wouldn’t get the thread locked.
Shortbow & quickness: nothing?
I would be perfectly happy using staff and retreat, except Anet intentionally broke swiftness staking on staff a long time ago
Really simple idea, just an extra inventory slot for a sidearm that activates on the function keys.
It is bad design.
Don’t forget, this means other classes get more out of less traits as well. 20 points for war to max out rifle or longbow. 10 to make ele cantrips give vigor and regen.
ranger goes from crap > viable
else goes from viable > added bonuses
Asura thief is actually easy to 1vX mobs. Dual dagger, drop radiation field and caltrops, death blossom, 25 bleed and poison are on every mob in the aoe.
Yeah, don’t you read those patch notes before the patch? You know, the ones they release after they’ve already taken the server down to update?
Small difference in the crit damage now, yes, but it is a percentile difference, and glass cannon is all about stacking stuff with percent synergy.
Don’t forget that warriors get 2x what rangers do out of trait selection as well.
*edit
Besides warriors getting stuff like arrow penetration and bow cooldowns as one trait instead of two, and healing shouts / banners blowing ranger support out of the water.
I’m sure everyone knows what forceful greatsword is. Assuming a warrior gets 10 stacks of might from it (a lowball), that trait is worth 350 power and condition damage. So for 20 trait points, warrior is getting 1100 stat points.
Your post is very, very nice for pointing out the impact that crappy traits and reliance on conditions & pets has on the ranger though.

Warrior: 1710 pow, 2189 pre, 65% crit, 2185 armor, 944 cond dam, 21662 hp,
0% crit dam
Ranger: 1710 pow, 2189 pre, 65% crit, 1980 armor, 644 cond dam, 18372 hp,
30% crit dam
reeeeeeeeeeaalyy?
Just one more thing before I go to bed sorely disappointed…
You said you need to focus on “things you know you can fix”
Let me give you a short list of things I KNOW you can fix. Today. Now. That would take you 10 minutes of coding and would have a massive impact. We’ll test it for you.
• Longbow/shortbow projectile speed. You don’t need to test it. You’ve got faster projectiles in game. Increase ours so our shots actually hit moving targets in PvP. The greatsword change is appreciated… but the VAST majority of Rangers love bows and want to use bows. Side stepping against a ranger in PvP negates 50% of their longbow damage. Side step back and forth and it negates 100%. Leet strats.
• Base movement speed of pets. Increase it. 20%. Do it now. Our pets will start to actually hit moving targets. I promise this won’t break your game. They will still die ridiculously fast in WvW, but at least they might get one or two hits off instead of zero. It’ll have next to no impact in PvE. Please do it right now.
• Signet of the Hunt. Increase it to 25% movement speed. Do it now. It won’t break the game. Thieves have it now and it would mean we have an actual useful signet on our hotbar. Don’t test it. You already tested it for thieves. Just do it right now.
That’s it. Those 3 items. 10 minutes of coding. Would give us 1000% more love then what you’ve given us today.
This. Add in stow pet and you would have had kitten near every ranger praising your name. How hard is it to actually keep the pet from popping up, for real real?
4 bullet points > 14, I wonder why people are unhappy
This is pretty obvious with opening strike or with an “invincible” enemy. Swoop for whatever reason does a bunch of attacks as you run that will drop any on hit effects. Use swoop close up to the dodge roll trainers (after they finish rolling) and watch the red popups
In fights where bosses AOE (most of them), your pet is a spider / devourer, dead, or running back and forth constantly and doing little damage. Especially if you are melee, you can’t even use return to move the pet out of AOE. Bear is already tanky, so it fits with them thematically and balance wise. An invincible cat would be stupid.
New talent: Cooperative Mauling
Bear pets are invincible and cannot be targeted by NPCs, but are also leashed to 200 range from the ranger
No NPC targeting so that they cannot tank PvE while invincible, but players can still use targeted CC. The big point is reliability. Anyone else like?
Try rolling with an elementalist friend who summons weapons for you
" also because you have no control at all over the Swiftness boon"
also because rangers cant have nice things
Well, I was asking more about pve, but I tested it on spvp. I actually did good unless I ran into a glass cannon thief (almost half the players). Playing a greatsword ranger, I’m already used to hitting like a wet noodle, and traps don’t transfer to pvp either. Elementalist has a huge upper hand on mobility and condition removal that I would be willing to trade my beloved kitten bear for as well.
I think I’ll just stick to casually bumbling through pve on my ranger though and hope for a weaponset / utility buff; spvp is a joke and my system can’t take much wvw anyway.
And it was hitting for more than twice my yellow tier greatsword, level 40 pve and WvW. Is tanky hammer elementalist really better? Should I just reroll?
Might be partly the turrets. Playing a ranger, mobs will often enough go for me even if I’m harvesting potatoes while my pet just ran ahead and aggro’d
Condition engineer, rotate pistols / grenades / bombs. Just drop smoke bomb to get as many ranged mobs as possible inside and then drop everything on everyone.
Not as good for bosses or dredge though, so back to spamming 1
Bear with a charge / knockdown on F2?
Bump
Noone likes it? discussed to death already? Post your own aspect examples!
The idea – find and commune with a spirit animal, like the norn aspects. When equipped, instead of a pet, the ranger gets a passive boost and a f2 ability. For example,
bear aspect
+ 30% vitality
f2: roar (animation like the ranger greatsword 2) and grant regen to nearby allies
Rangers could even use one pet / one aspect, and feel like they have an actual companion instead of being some kind of pokeminion master. Also, this would be easy to implement into the existing system – I bet many people would prefer this even if pet traits and skills just did nothing. If something like this was an option, ranger would easily be my favorite class.
