On-topic: Yeah, they’re also very easily countered, if the opponent takes a moment to actually comprehend the things involved. For example, can’t move, so can’t avoid AoEs.

Perhaps it’s my own lack of education, but why are passive stats a bad investment? It’s still 2010 plus added to a stat. Investing into power wrench puts a cripple on all attacks and lowers the CD by 20%. If you carry pistols having 4 in pistols would give you another 20% CD and penetrating shots. Luke I said, maybe it’s my lack of education as to why these traits are not important.

You can get the stats you need from gear. Getting good traits is more important than extra condition damage or whatever. They will affect your play and success more. Not that I agree with everything Vee Wee said, but I definitely agree on that point. If you are using kits, you don’t really need a lower CD on pistol skills, as you will have a bunch of other skills to use that may be better than the pistol skills. I don’t think pistols need to have piercing shots in a condition build, and they aren’t good for a power build. Investing in power wrench is nice, but it isn’t necessary as the kit is good already. Also, “Power Wrench: Previously delivered crippling blows with your autoattack and your throw wrench ability. This has been folded to the baseline of your toolkit so now you don’t have to equip this trait to maintain that crippling effect. Instead, Power Wrench has been changed to have a 10% damage increase while using the toolkit. Your combo, your pry bar and your thrown wrench abilities will all have the 10% damage increase.” So, when that patch comes out, Power Wrench will only increase damage, which is nice but not needed for a condi build.

Thanks for the reply Starxes, I’m currently on the fence between Bombs/grenades and Tool Kit. So far my spec is a 4/4/0/6/0 with HgH and pistols traited into.

That’s a tough one… I’d say bomb kit, since you won’t be picking up Power Wrench with that build. You might decide you want Tool Kit later to help with chasing once the balance patch comes through and all it’s attacks cripple by default, but until then I think you’d get more out of the control and combo fields you get with bomb kit than you would with Tool kit’s shield, pull and crowbar.

I thought of swapping the bomb trait line for gadgets so as to do a pistols/elixer (HGh) tool kit build. Just not sure which would be better.

I think the explosives line would be stronger than gadgets, especially for conditions. Tool kit by itself might not help you to much with the conditions. Of course, I haven’t used in a while, so…

I’m definitely not an expert, but some general advice…for conditions, you’ll want pistol/pistol or pistol/shield. Shield is a great weapon, with a knockback, blast finisher, etc…some of the good utilities for conditions are bomb kit, grenade kit, elixir gun, and probably tool kit. If you are doing sPvP or tPvP, your PvE/WvW gear won’t carry over (you might already know that). Flamethrower will be better with the upcoming patch, but I’m not sure its great right now for conditions, but you could definitely run it. I know other will be able to contribute more for you, but that should help.
Edit: A good build might be something like 6/6/0/0/2 or 6/2/0/0/2. I personally like running bombs, grenades, and EG, but play what you like.

Hi, I am at level 79 on my Engineer, who will soon be my first 80. I will be doing WvW, sPvP, and living story. I only have 16 gold, because I spent some on crafting and 10 on the magi amulet in sPvP. What gear should I get, and where? Does LS need good gear? I haven’t decided whether I want to roam or zerg in WvW, but probably zerg because I am rather inexperienced. Would the armor I use be different in zerging from roaming? One more question: are condition builds bad in WvW? I heard they were, but…

Edit: If I don’t do conditions, I might do a rifle/FT might stacking build, how would that affect armor?

It’s the grandmaster minor trait in Firearms (where Modified Ammunition is) that grants you a personal +5% damage against bleeding foes.

If you really want to use grenades and flamethrower, you need to get rid of deadly mixture and take modified ammo instead.
The combination of Modified Ammo with Target the Maimed will on average give you a comparable 11 – 15% (theoretically it can go up to 29%) damage increase, but it works for all of your skills not just FT. Unless you’re after the added toughness, Juggernaut is a bad trait for a 3 kit build, as you usually don’t stay long enough in FT to build up Might stacks.

Is it a bad thing to take grenades and flamethrower together? Also, I didn’t see Target the Maimed. I get what you’re saying about Juggernaut.

Hi,
I never used flamethrower because I heard it was weak. Now, it’s getting a buff, and I thought I might like to try a build with bomb kit, grenade kit, and flamethrower. You’ve forgotten to do armour XD But yes you’re build is actually quite meta at the moment. You’ll want to go for a full rabid set of armour. Instead of forceful explosions or short fuse, swap one of them out for Shrapnel. I’d say drop the 2 points in alchemy as Deadly mixture won’t help in a condi build, put them into firearms and grab fireforged trigger. That’s about all I can critic

Wow, I’m a pro (just kidding)…but what is rabid armour? the only rabid thing I could find was the amulet…also, why wouldn’t deadly mixture help in a condi build? I do like fireforged trigger, though. And what’s so great about shrapnel with a 15% chance? I will modify the build though, thanks.
Edit: Oh, rabid is for WvW. I was talking about sPvP. However, I will try WvW when I get to 80, so still a helpful gear tip.

There are two mouse settings in the OSX beta that relate specifically to the trackpad and magic mouse – make sure those are turned off because they might interfere with how your scroll wheel works in game.

From observation it seems like most people who have mouse problems have solved them by using the default mouse drivers for OSX, rather than the specific logitech drivers?

So I recently had to start playing GW2 on an iMac. It mostly worked well, but I had some issues. I have it setup so that to move forward, I hold down the left and right buttons on the mouse. On the mac both the left and right buttons work for everything…even in GW2. Except, many times I hold down the two buttons and nothing happens. I try numerous times to move forward but it doesn’t always work, and my character just stands there. I never had this problem on a PC. I use a Logitech G600. Also, the scroll wheel works in everything except guild wars, but in guild wars, it doesn’t work at all. I tried to bind zoom to the scroll wheel, but the game didn’t even recognize it. I don’t know if it’s related to the mouse or just a game issue. Thanks for the help.

because you can already beat most condi classes without it, necro being the only exception. you’ll still lose to a necro if you take it, and you’ll be left without any stunbreakers to deal with the all too common hambow. without elixir s, you lose 2 huge defensive abilities.

don’t run med kit. it’s not that great.
adventurer + energy sigil will give you a lot of dodges. when you play the game of gw2, you dodge or you die.
you definitely need to swap to your weapon set. the power of the engineer comes from cycling between kits and weapons for a continuous barrage of abilities.

you can run elixir r instead of s and take out 5 from firearms and put it into tools. elixir s is better imo because it gives you a stunbreak.
you can run nightmare and smoldering instead of adventurer and corruption. it will give you an extra tick on your incendiary powder. the fear proc can save your life, even if it’s a bit unreliable.

I completely forgot about the whole switching thing, I know it helps a lot. But I thought med kit was the best heal?

I think it wouldn’t let me survive long enough though. However, I really like both the alchemy and tools trait lines…I guess alchemy would improve defense by giving me more health. Unfortunately Guardian is the worst class to play without a party of people you know and bunkering can get dull in hotjoins, but I can link you some decent offensive builds if you wish to take matters in your hands and smash some faces!

Also sorry I forgot to add the amulet (power, toughness, healing power) and runes (runes of the soldier) in the link provided!

Thanks again. I would like to try offensive builds too, so if you could link those…and how is scepter/torch? And, which is the best healing skill to use? Shelter or the signet?

Dodging is really important in SPvP, but quite hard to master. Skilled players can recognize the animations of dangerous skills and dodge them accordingly. Since I realize that’s asking too much from a new player, simply dodging when under pressure will get you by, for now.

Guardians excel at being really hard to kill and supporting other players in SPvP. As such, Guardians in tournaments (GW2 term for ranked play) almost always run bunker (GW2 term for tank) builds and focus on staying alive and protecting points.
However, since defending points gives little to no score, people in hotjoin (non-ranked play) rarely do it. It’s your choice on what you should do, people don’t really care about winning in non-ranked matches. Personal suggestion: bunker a point when in a 5 vs 5 match but don’t do it when in a 8 vs 8.

P.s. Retaliation just does a flat amount of damage to the enemy everytime he hits you. It doesn’t protect you from damage.
P.p.s. Here’s a good bunker build for a Guardian. http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-7Bxs-JGOFk40B3FG-90;9;69TT;44;001A189p Other viable weapons are scepter, focus, sword and staff. Keep in mind that with this build you can’t possibly kill anyone in a 1 vs 1, so you’ll have to rely on your teammates.

I am new to the game, and I have a bunch of questions, and I thought this would be the best place to ask. So, in PvE, I can dodge/roll pretty well (I think), by watching for a big attack animation. But in sPvP and WvW, I have no idea when to dodge, and I hear it is important to time dodges/rolls…
When playing my guard. (level 30), I do not know what utility skills to use. Also, Retaliation supposedly reflects damage, but not all of it? I try to play mostly offensively, with some support and defense.
Finally, in sPvP, should I stay and guard a point or leave? No one ever stays, but it makes sense to stay and guard. Thanks for the help, sorry for all the questions.

So I just started to play GW2, and I have created two characters. On both of them, I have noticed that when I receive a message with coins in it, when I say take all, it actually removes coins from my “supply” of coins, instead of adding. Here are two pictures of before and after hitting take all (This is just one instance of this happening)
