Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this means to mean. Guild Wars has been a huge part of my life and I was hurt behind words by the changes to the Personal Story. I’ll admit, I had given up hope of ever seeing the changes reverted and set right. This goes a long way to me restoring my faith in ANet.
Yeah, a friend was asking about whether or not she should pick up the game and I was like “Uh………”
Replay Season 1 of the Living Story? We can’t even replay the original Personal Story!
How can they talk about adding content when they’ve screwed up existing content?
And finally there are those who care about storytelling and can’t get into their main character if their main character is Mr./Mrs. Perfect and never makes any mistakes. And we’re worried that removing the greatest fear storyline is sanitizing the story to become just that. It makes it a bad story from a narrative perspective. And we thought they cared about telling a good story. We all are starting to feel like we were wrong about that now.
This. And the most ridiculous thing is they kitten the PS in the face and simultaneously hype the everloving hell out of the current living story. How does this work? Is this an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ policy gone horribly, horribly wrong and way too far? That’s what I’m starting to think.
The fact that in my opinion the LS is actually good (no idc I seriously like it a lot shutup) makes it a lot worse for me. It’s like being able to draw a perfect pink rose but completely sucking at drawing a red one. Hooooow.
I couldn’t agree more. Why is it that ANets thinks they can get me excited about the story after they butchered it without a care?!
Lucky! I’m pretty sure I had just been asked by the Pale Tree what my fear was. From what I understand, that does not count as having ‘started’ that plot line.
It bums me out cause I’ve only seen one of the 3 different quests.
My only hope for raiding is that it doesn’t come with a gear treadmill. Ascended gear should remain the highest tier. New skins should be the rewards, not new stats.
It blows my mind that ANEt is hyping up it’s Living Story after screwing up the Personal Story.
I would be fine with raids as long as there was no gear stat increase. Ascended gear already kittened me off enough.
The problem with not talking about what they are working on — they of course don’t talk about what they aren’t working on. It all looks the same to us.
But this they actually busted… I would think they could talk about stuff they busted… A simple play through shows the plot is all mixed up… maybe the plot doesn’t matter?
Exactly! We have no idea what there thoughts on the story changes are, so we assume the worst. For all we know the next patch could put everything right again, but we are left in the dark thinking that they aren’t even addressing it. If someone would just say something, anything! Even if’s it’s bad news then at least we would know and be able to act accordingly.
And quite frankly, if the plot no longer matters to them, then this game no longer matters to me. And it pains me greatly yo say that, but its the truth. They nixed the wonderful aspect of exploration with the NPE, the only thing left for me is the story.
I think it’s dumb. The only people this helps are rich vets and ANet. With this new system, if someone is a few gems away from buy something for the Black Lion (cause they have left over gems from a previous purchase) then they HAVE to purchase more gems instead of spending a few gold for a few gems. It’s insane, and quite frankly, a money grab. I thought I couldn’t be more disappoint by ANet after they ruined the story, but I was wrong.
I agree, more communication on ANet’s part would really help in this case. If we just knew that our concerns were being heard, if we knew what their plan was, there would be a lot less complaining.
God I hope the PS changes are reversed this patch. I’ve not logged in since the patch in protest, and with the announcements I feel like I’m starting to cave. C’mon ANet, let me know that the faith I have in you isn’t misplaced!
Has ANet given a reason for why they made the changes to the Personal Story? Have they mentioned whether or not they are planning to revert the changes? I’m ‘one of those PvE players’, if you know what I mean – in other words, I am here almost exclusively for the story.
Mad King Day is fast approaching, and I would love to log back in, but I can’t really bring myself to support a game that would willing screw with their own story in this sorta way, ya know? I’d like to hear from ANet to know whether or not I should hold out hope that the changes will be reverted, or if I should just save myself the hearthache and un-install. I’ve loved Tyria since GW1, and would love to throw more money at this game, but the story is just so important to me, ya know?
When the patch hit I had a character under level 70, but in the middle of Greatest Fear. He played out Greatest Fear and, after that, was in the new mission order.
Characters I had above 70 and beyond Greatest Fear seem to be on the old mission order.
Confusing! Come on ANet, communication means talking about difficult issues too…
That’s a shame. I truly hope ANet fixes this problem soon.
Could you define ‘started’ in relation to the level 70 story? If I remember correctly, my characters just told the Pale Tree their greatest fears.
I must admit, I am waiting with baited breathe myself. The second there is confirmation that this has been resolved I’ll probably play for a week straight! I haven’t logged-in since the patch and I’m dying to go back. Plus, there are some things in the Black Lion Trader I wanna get.
I hope they have this sorted out by Mad Kings Day, I really do…
Any word on whether characters that started the PS pre-patch have corrected PSs? Is the story still broken for NPE characters?
Has there been any word about whether or not this has been addressed? About whether or not this will be fixed, or when the fix will occur?
I’ve been outta the loop lately…
We have speculated that it was to make the progress into Orr easier for new players, since the NPE is all the rage these days, but there has been no official word – to my knowledge of course.
I think I would be willing to log in again if they at least said something like “Hey, we are going to fix this, we are going to put this back but it will take time” or something, ya know?
I am hoping against hope that this gets fixed before Mad King Day. It would kill me to miss that event, but I’m trying my best to not log-in until the story is repaired.
If the general issue was that “the later chapters do not focus on you, the Commander all that much but with Trahearne with his Wyld Hunt and all”, cutting the Greatest Fear plotline that was the most personalized plot since you joined an Order, was the most counter-productive reaction to an issue that I have seen for some time.
Like I said, I don’t think that this was cut out on purpose. If it was, then the wiki should either reflect that change along with an official statement on the preview blog for the Feature Patch indicating that certain parts will be removed. Even the patch notes clearly say that they are just changing the order of chapters here and not deleting anything. If I recall the files related to the unplayable quests are still present. It’s just that but rearranging the story, it could have resulted in continuity issues.
But how is it that a huge hunk of the story could be cut on accident?
I really wish they would do a CDI about the story.
I would be kinda ok if they ditched the chapter system as well to be honest. But that’s just me of course…
I would chop up the Personal Story…
That’s why I keep coming back actually, to let ANet know that I haven’t forgotten about this and they shouldn’t either.
Have there been any other red posts about this? Other then the one where they say they discussing it?
I’ve always wanted to be able to replay them, or at least see the cut scenes again. The caveat here being that I want to replay the original, un-cut version of course.
But wouldn’t the quickest way to fix all the flaws in the story be to put it back in the correct order?
So according to a red post they are ‘looking into it’. I’m not sure what they need to discuss though, to be honest. I mean, the story is broken; they need to fix it. There, end of discussion.

The fact that the Studio Director states he will look into it tells me that it is a bug. The fact that the story itself is still in the game files tells me it is a trigger bug. I don’t see what you are seeing that supports a theory that it is not a bug.
The short answer is critical thinking.
You can also use “crying wolf”. This is what happens when the developer regularly applies nerfs to longstanding content rewards and calls them “bug fixes”.
Unfortunately, the player base isn’t nearly as stupid as Anet would prefer, and everything about the NPE seems geared toward making that ratio more favorable.
ArenaNet have proven to me a few times that they are willing to admit mistakes and change things. I see no reason at the moment to think otherwise.
I hope that you’re right. I would love to have my faith in ANet restored.
Yeah, that’s what scares me to. If they are willing to take out whole chunks of the story and rearrange the ending, they what else are they going to do to the story. I mean, I expect skill balances and stuff like that in an MMO, but story balances? Come on ANet…
It frustrates me that we still haven’t heard anything much from ANet on this. I really hate that I went from ‘rabid fanboy’ to ‘jaded spinster’ with just one patch…
Yeah, I’ll admit, the PS wasn’t high art, but even if we disagree about it’s quality, I think we can all agree that these changes didn’t make it any better.
I always said I wanted to work at ANet as the “Manifesto Enforcer” …
It saddens me greatly that story was removed, but it makes me happy to see that I’m not the only one passionate about this. Hopeful, ANet will see that the story MATTERS to us players, and then do the right thing and revert all the changes.
I’d like to see if new characters/players can get that dialogue.
Well, yeah, if I’m honest I want this reversed more than anything. I would beg them in person. In fact, my hope is that this all some sort of terrible bug.
I think there was something about how ANet is free to retcon story at will…
Oh yeah drop back Scarlet’s age… ohhhhhh weeeeeeeeeeeee
This isn’t really a case of retcon. Well, it is, but it’s more than that.
The order of the story steps now make more sense. From what I understand, the dialogue remains unchanged – though I’ll be going through on my warrior (who’s currently in the racial sympathy storyline) to double check this. If this is true, then that means that you’ll get dialogue and actions that make no sense. Heck, even if it isn’t true, this still happens. In so many ways.
If I may ask, how does it make more sense? I mean this seriously and with no malice or sarcasm. I always thought the story made sense myself, but I’m something of a lore fiend. And to be honest the very idea that they would change the order of their own story blows my mind and breaks my heart.
Hey Phys,
What about folks knowing the plot of Living World for example and leaking it?
Chris
What’s there to leak? “Dragon of the jungle shows up, wrecks people’s sheet, and we kill it.”
I’m more worried about people using the PTR data to work the Trading Post.
Well we take the story very seriously so therein lies the problem!
Chris
I am glad to hear that you take the story very seriously. Truth be told I was very seriously distraught when I heard about the changes to the Personal Story. I feel so bad for all the people who didn’t get a chance to fully experience it in all it’s original glory.
Hello Chris. I am not sure if you are the right person I could ask for this job as the customer service thread doesn’t seem to tell me much, but this has something to do with the Personal Story.
First off, here’s the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2g02mx/the_personal_story_doesnt_make_sense_since_the/
Now I can understand rearranging certain chapters. I think I can live with it given time. But what caught my attention however is related to the quest A Light in the Darkness where you disabled the Your Greatest Fear portion of the quest, which in turn would disable the other quests related to that part (for example, the removal of Tonn and Apatia’s quests). I don’t know if this is really the case or not as I have finished Apatia’s quest after this patch was downloaded. I want to know if this is really true or not. And if so, I’d appreciate your insight as to why this happened.
Hey Malkavian,
Mind if i get back to you on this?
Chris
Is there any chance we could also get some insight on why the events in Orr or out of order?
If you already started the story then ‘Greatest Fear’ happens. If you haven’t then who knows? That’s why we are all waiting for a dev to say something.
Normally, this is where I would sing the praises of the Personal Story, but given this recent patch I’m afraid I can’t do that anymore.
Yeah, I regret that not all of my characters got to go through the Personal Story as it was. And I heard that the Journal leave out the ‘Greatest Fear’ chapter as well. So it a way, even if you did it…you really didn’t.
I hate to admit it, but if this is a permanent change, then I am permanently gone. I love Tyria and her people, and I love their stories. But I refuse to play GW2 with a gutted story. I hope more than anything that this is a bug, and that the reports of the story order being changed are false, but no dev has stepped forward to comment one way or another.
And really, that’s all we want: an answer. Has the PS been changed? In what ways and for what reasons?
If you are making a sticky will you address the Personal Story concerns? Is the ‘Greatest Fears’ story really cut? Are the events or Orr really out of order? I’ll be honest, I almost can’t believe that it’s true, but so many people are reporting it.
I hope more than anything that the reverse the changes to the Personal Story. I love this game so much and I don’t want to quit, but I refuse to log in until the story is repaired.
