The point , that a lot of people, including myself are making, is that there is a much higher value being offered to brand new players for their $50 spend.
Agreed , that the base game is not being charged, and that the price tag is for the expansion only, but if you consider the value offered to new players vs the value offered to old gamer, there is a huge apparent difference.
It’s a fairly safe assumption to say that the base game is not free. It doesn’t really make any sense to say that Anet, over the course of a single day was willing to change their perceived value of the core game from being $40(or $10) to $0. If they did indeed value their game at $0, they would have no issues with giving that “free” copy to all existing players that buy HoT.
This is true. The current market value of the core GW 2 game is certainly not free. As a separate product it does indeed have a non zero price tag, just that when it comes bundled with HoT expansion it seems to be offered as a massive 100% discount.
It’s good for new players, and I love that ANet is offering such a deal. For the new player, they get all the core game, all the original LS content plus a new expansion all in the same price. For the existing player however it does leave a slight sour taste in the mouthI just hope there is enough of the expansion to justify the price instead.
‘……….all the original LS content’
wha………. ALL?!
Surely not.
They had a sale for that recently, and some of us mugs paid gems for it.
I think I might have missed that. In which case that may be the case for the new players too , i.e. they will have to purchase Living Story with gems. Surely they haven’t discounted that as well… …. If not, then, that’s just a slap in the face …

I have. Actually, just purchasing the expansion is the only option (excluding the other packages bonuses). Your analogy makes sense logically, but the semantics are off. You are going to buy tires, sure, but you don’t buy a whole new car — you just buy the tires. The difference is people who have not had the car up until this point are able to purchase the tires w/ the car for roughly the same price. This is fair seeing as your car is super tricked out by now and probably is loaded with goodies, while theirs doesn’t even have a sterio.
This is just one more example of poor communication. That’s the Heat of this Thorn-y issue (I’m sorry, I had too).
Jumping in here, so apologies if I missed any points you may have made in this massive thread.
So technically this is how the situation plays out for many people
1. If you are a new player: You get this huge bonus value of 3+ years worth of content
2. If you are an old player: You don’t get any bonus whatsoever. ( The fact that there wasn’t any bonus as such has now become irrelevant simply because the core game to new gamers is being perceived as such )
To some it may seem like entitlement , and in some ways it is , but to a degree it’s also to be expected .
People have spent time into this game, and built a relationship with the company and people that make the game, and quite frankly, for me, such a relationship with gamers and the company is not that commonly seen for a game as big as this. People have spent money in the Gem Store, on and off , many with the reasoning that they are doing it to "support the company " etc etc…
So when the time comes to make a fairly hefty investment, and people that are just starting out seem to get a massive bonus in terms of value for their purchase, it makes the veterans feel that they’ve gotten the short end of the stick , when the truth is , $50 is the price for the expansion only. Period.
I think the main issue is a perception of value. As members of GW for years, we’ve gotten a lot of content for free, Living World and the like. However people rarely remember past value , and more so , many will argue that Anet HAD to provide such content if they wanted their game to be in business.
It’s a very interesting issue that brings about the nature of perception of value over time, to immediate return on investment . I’ll be interested to see how ANet handles this one.
And yes, I do agree with the line of thought, there simply isin’t enough information available on HoT , for me at least, to help justify that price tag. Wait and see seems to be the best approach in that sense

Well, the things I liked about these updates were the fights which were refreshing from the general mob fights, but , god, I hated fighting and killing those centaurs. That was brutal.
I can’t understand why Caithe did what she did to this degree… Either it’s poor storytelling or the medium of a few missions and a few dialogues are a poor medium
With regards to the birth of Nightmare Court and Faolin, it’s true the pressure to be perfect might have been quite a load for many Sylvari. However Faolin , in simply doing the exact opposite of what the tenets say rather than explore and experience life and then form an opinion truly indicates a spoilt teenage brat rebelling against the ‘house rules’. Her character is made out to be vapid and shallow
It would have been much better for her to be mellow and ambivalent to start with , and then as she sees brutality against her people, she feels that pacifism is not the way to go. The fact that Faolin’s character is so obviously racist and foul right from the start doesn’t help the story at all.
I suspect they need to release mini storylets, short experiences like they did for Canache for SouthSun Cove. That supplementary material does help flesh out the story and atmosphere instead of putting too much under assumption.
Oh, and I hate Vropp more than ever . How can there be no atonement for what he did even today ?? Ah well

@Kodesh
One of the most heartening and personal experiences I’ve read.
I’m glad to have encountered your thread and also the experiences shared by everyone else..
I commend you sir, and your spirit.
+1
Agree with this, Didn’t live up to the ‘Living Story’ as far as getting deep into lore, ore relating to the characters as such
Only introducing a couple of new characters only for an instance each and that’s it, without any chance to know more about them, their past etc
You don’t feel for the content, and the storytelling is very poor
The initial content , described as teaser content, was pretty cool – I was hoping we’d be able to have some similar content to trace these new characters’s past and motivations
Overall , it just seems rushed.
They should have included a scene or a mission, where your toon is gonna be killed, or in a very dire situation , and either Rox or the Norn help you out at the risk of their lives.. ( like taking a killing blow from the weapon specialists or something )
Then , add another quest to fetch some medicine, or get them out to a special NPC to get healed or something
In terms of Living World of changing the world overall for everyone, yeah, it does do that , especially with the sonic periscopes ,

Usually I dont complain that much about gw2, and offer constructive criticism, but F&F the razing was initially spectacular, but short lived. Looking back on the entire month id say its a huge dissapointment. Each character, Rox and Braham, were only given one completable mission. That is surely not enough to last a month. The living story aspect completely failed there for me, and was a let down, as it was for many other players. Myself, along with many other players, probably thought a series of missions would be rolled out through the razing. But no, and thats where the living story made a huge mistake. Anet could really improve from this scenario. The Razing was popularized as being the genesis of big content, and the first week of the patch, it sure looked like, but then it was followed by 3 very very blan weeks. Actually there was nothing at all. And im reading now in the retribution content article at a specific section that says " Fight alongside Rox and Braham on this final mission against the combined forces of the dredge and Flame Legion".
Wait..what? Final missoins? There were only beginning missions for each npc!!! Is 2 missions for each char Anets idea of a living story? Lets be honest its kind of a joke. There was very little character development, if any at all, leading up to this finale. Anyway Anet I think your living story team could learn a lot from this when creating future content.
It’s not silly at all
In Japanese, Computer is spelled/pronounced like kon – pyuu – taa [ no kom ] , so yeah.. computers going to rule in Tyria ; )
HAL 9000 FTW!

Hi everybody!
First of all I´m from Spain so sorry for my english ^^
I would want to introduce you the hints that I have from my spanish version of the game in relation to this “Kom-pew.. something” that the spy talks about in the last chapter of F&F.
If you didn´t obtain the hints from the spy, be awared that the following debate can be considered SPOILERIn one of the spy notes, she said that she is afraid about a “Kom-pew.. something” that it is in the molten alliance quarters…
Well… in the spanish version of the game, that mysterious thing is called “Or-de…algo”
So thinking about it, I have reached a conclusion (a little silly one, that I can´t fit completely in the game, but that makes sense to me at least):
The thing is…. a COMPUTER.
In english that “Kom-pew” sounds perfectly like Compu…ter and in spanish, computer is “ORDENADOR”, just like our hint “Or-de…”To me the hints make sense. However, a computer in Tyria makes not XD.
What do you think about it? Any ideas? Did you figured out already?
Cheers!
The game is slowly and gently heading in a good direction and taking it’s sweet time. You haven’t missed out on any Flame and Frost content yet.
If you leave for 3 more months the return will be all the sweeter, but still not a huge list of major overhauls.I’m curious what you mean by he hasn’t missed any Flame and Frost content yet?
Obviously since I just came back too I had thought about this. It seems like it’s on part 3 right now with the two NPC missions, so doesn’t that mean we missed parts 1 and 2?
I think you can still earn achievements from previous parts. The broken signposts and campires etc.
When Part 2 came out , Part 1 was still very much available to do
It seems pretty much standard and is ( read- “should be” ) intended for checking how the game works with various hardware config, If the user is doing something unauthorised in game or trying to hack the game client etc etc
FWIW, this is not a new clause

Heya OriginalSki-
Check out our Guild – started just for bringing players together – it’s a fun bunch of folks having a good fun time in game. We do ’most of everything from PvE, Dungeons, Guild Missions, WvW and basicallyl having some fun in game!
And oh, we’re mostly on TC as well!

You folks may also want to consider this thread

( Still active on 33rd page )
The guild was created for just this reason, bringing people together who want to focus on having fun with a good group – we have people of all skill levels , and pretty much do anything and everything, including hoarding tonics for times when you need them ( Hey costume brawl’s are fun! )
~TNE
The Ele will come into its own when you get comfortable shifting between attunements – and yes it will come . It’s brilliant, the amount of support + dps you can do at the same time based on the weapon you choose.,
I’d offer similar advice for the mesmer – takes a bit of getting used to but extremely fun to play!
Guardian is preferred as support from what I have seen from other people ( haven’t played it too much myself ) , so when you say you find it boring, perhaps damage and DPS are what you are after at this current time
In which case, the warrior is also a good choice. Why was this boring for you ?
~TNE
Major changes ? – Well kind of
Apart from the updates, and discussion going on changes to the loot mechanics of guaranteed rares from mega bosses, guesting, and paid world transfers ( oh and the end of culling in WvW ), you have the living story PvE Content
It’s A.Net way of progressing the story / lore in the game with drawn out events and changes in the game world. Each phase releases sequentially.
It has it’s own achievement, and can be quite fun – next big update for the same to come on 26th March
Another set of changes are the Guild Missions, that take place in the open world – essentially content that requires coordinated play amongst a group of people. An example is Guild Bounties, where your guild has to track down and apprehend/kill a character. ( Like a Zaishen Bounty )
They can be unlocked as upgrades via influence.
Some compare it to raid-like content for GW, but meh – I digress.
For your choice of char, if you were comfy with the ele, go with ele ( biased advice from me as I play Ele a lot )
~TNE
As a long time ele player, I always expect my conjured weapon to be picked up by my allies.
You conjure it in the heat of battle, and if you are not with a group that has a predefined strategy on these , then it’s fair game
I expect a team mate to pick it up if they think it’s going to be useful to their DPS or whatever.
If I’ve finished my charges, and it’s still there, I get it asap to prevent it from expiring
On the other side: – I’ve picked up other Ele weapons quite often , without * ANY* QQ from team mates.
Basically – unless otherwise stated – it’s fair game.
Btw, as far as I know, the conjured weapon can also be picked up your foes ( in PVP ) . thus good in PVE, and tricky to use in PvP without your allies swooping in and picking it up before the enemy does

Downscaling seems to work ok
Right now, from Level 60 went to Queensdale to do some events and yes, the bandits seemed a little tougher to beat than they were before the downscaling. However I still felt my skills were doing greater enough damage then when my toon WAS at level 5
At the current setting, it seems to be just enough to make you want to pay just a bit more attention and not just spam the auto-attack, and the event that I did a few months ago, suddenly became interesting again
I am not sure how or what level the downscaling happens on your stats ( which is prob why the UI has changed to show you ONLY the downscaled stats at first glance )
Having said that I also hate the idea of feeling that leveling could become , for better or worse, a completely static experience
That apart from the time spent on the keyboard learning my skills patterns, there is very little feeling of accomplishment , in terms of gaining power, from being a higher level
To have champion or heroes is core of fantasy lore and games like this and players like to feel that they have earned that in game in some sense.
As long as that you are able to feel slightly ever more powerful with each level and new armor, it should be ok , but it’s going to be a very tough balancing act for A.Net to get
Otherwise, levelling is just a way to gate content.
A few folks above mentioned GW1. While it is true the level cap was reached very quickly and a lot of the game was at L20 , there are two very important differences
1. in GW1 you still felt ridiculously overpowered in low level areas.
2. Gaining skill points with levels allowed you access to more and more skills and spells which added to the whole feel of being an ‘powerful versatile veteran hero’ – That feeling may be well on its way out in GW2 if they don’t get this balance right , especially because the number of skills and spells are very few in number in comparison
~TNE
Ok, so now you just commune with the corpse of the Shark –
Long live the legend of the (now dead ) land-shark
WP Rushing was by far the most ‘disgusting’ experience of the game I’ve had and I’d be happy to see them not needed.
But The WP mechanic itself wasn’t to blame
At least the WP were helping to complete dungeons in a reasonable amount of time.
The dungeon encounters have nothing memorable about them, no strategic fights nor clever counters. It’s just offload as much as firepower you can on the boss in a ring whilst trying to dodge their nearly 1 shot kill attack
That’s pretty much it. These fights require the best steamrolling / Kiting your team can muster
You state that the goal is to make dungeons more memorable , more strategic. I’m all for that.
Perhaps that should have been part of the first set of changes that would encourage people to not adopt the play behaviour you intended for the game
Looking forward to phase two and more strategic gameplay in dungeons that should make WP zerging a faded memory
What level are you at ? and where are you in the overall lore completion ?
@OP:
Ele’s are very VERY versatile ( perhaps not as much as the engineer I guess ), and as many of the folks have mentioned above , Attunement Switching is something you will have to learn to love , otherwise not only will you mildly effective, but you will get bored very fast
Learn to switch to water as well, the Frost Armours, and Water 1 in D/D are effective for Chill and Stacking on Vulnerability.
Plus Water has heals which are often overlooked, but need to be applied as a part of your regular spell spamming
Get to grips with switching and various skills and you will really enjoy the kind of action you see in game.
Against Vets, kiting / circle strafing is a must as well

@Kai, @Glitch
:D Thanks for the warm welcome
goes off to read pages 3 to 13… pauses… starts to read pages 3 to 4
Everything in moderation, I always say
Appreciate the invite – have accepted and look forward to catching up with you folks in game and on the forums as well !

Heya! , Am new to these here parts ( a.k.a the GW2 forums ), have made a post or three before.
Though I recently joined a casual and nice guild,
I read the first couple of pages, liked the vibes , read the last couple pages, liked the vibes some more, so decided to post
( please don’t make me read pages 3 to 13:P )
Name: Tranquilnelf
Main Character: Tranquiln Elf
Current Server: Yaks’s Bend
Interested Activities: PvE , Socializing, Dungeons. Hoping to make a foray into WvW
Active: Play mainly Weekends and Friday
Additional Comments: Am a very casual player and find it hard to take out dedicated time out very frequently, but I do love my gaming. + Will always spare a few dedicated hours in case any special activity or quests chains are being attempted.
Not new to MMOs, long time GW 1 fan , Warcraft fan , and dabbler in WoW ( was pretty fun, but got too grindy at some point )
I do enjoy helping folks out, and will be happy to lend assistance if able. Like some folks on the thread above, am also the patient type ( I think )
Not an expert on the best builds or how to squeeze one more half point of Crit damage, I think I do alright, and mostly just like to have fun in game
~TNE
That’s not the point of the events however.
Events are designed to make the world feel dynamic.
If no player is around to save captives from a Champion – so be it. They will unfortunately perish
Granted they will not permanently perish
You guys realize that the only truly one time event is the one on the Sunday? And even that runs for multiple hours, so you have plenty of time to experience it. All the other ones are just the kick-offs for the events. The events themselves are going to be repeatable most likely for the day they’re released (or longer).
-edited for clarity
You do realize that based on the description posting, the culmination of the event is a one time event kick off on Sunday ?
And the Mad King erupting through to Lion’s Arch was also “just a kick off” but it was pretty darn cool and to miss it was tragic
Here’s the excerpt from the announcement
“The event will culminate in a big Finale on Sunday November 18, make sure you will not miss it. This will be a onetime only event chain that will run multiple hours, and it will kick off at noon PST (20:00 GMT). Again, this will only run once, so make sure you will be there! "
I love the idea of One time Events – but they way they are currently timed, it just simply excludes COMPLETELY people like me who have it fall at an obscene time or a work day
It almost feels like automatic discrimination
This is a big downer. Dynamic one time events that change the world is one of the biggest USPs of Guild Wars that made me excited to play.
Sure you have events otherwise, but technically they repeat.
So why would you repeatedly keep the one time activity at a time where not everyone can experience it ?
Why not have the one time event Sunday Morning or even Saturday ? instead of smack bang in the middle of a workday for your fans halfway across the world ?
Sunday Morning / Saturday would still benefit USA and Europe gamers with it being on a weekend
I get that it’s symbolic to have it at NOON Sunday and that it “earmarks” the weekend for a GW event, but if ALL one time events are going to be thus timed, then coupled with the stuttering frame rates on powerful CPUs/GPUs ( Which I would hope devs are working on ) , GW2 is fast becoming a downer!
I’ll still play it, but with a bad taste in my mouth.
It seems more than a few people are having this.
When I log in, the FPS is a comfy 35 – 40 . As soon as you hit an intense area , or a boss battle, it drops to 15 – 20 and STAYS low , unless you log back in
This with the updated drivers and beyond the minimum specs.
Sadly, this did not happen last week, so am guessing something they are working/have recently worked on.
I guess fixing all the issues with the game servers is taking a slight toll in other areas if they added debugging info to the game code during this time ;P
I hope they get this fixed pretty soon. WOuld be a shame to play this and miss out on the visuals
