How to make raid fights more accessible

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

This whole point of accessibility is pointless. It is supposed to be difficult content that requires strategy and team work. In every game on the planet that requires strategy, optimal systems will emerge and people will demand those optimal configuration , especially when you first learn the game.

Its like complaining that chess is problematic because has typical opening strategies that work better than others and that you should be able do play as you want and not follow the optimal strategies and still win.

If it is a game and is reasonably difficult and has rules optimal configurations will emerge ALWAYS and you will be playing it wrong if you do not follow them without having a better counter-proposal. The idea of ¨play as you want¨ freedom in this case does not exist unless you make them pushovers, basically canceling the whole point.

Also the comparison to other games is ridiculous. Compared to other games raiding in GW2 is already more accessible as shown by stats Anet themselves gave, exactly because of the lack of a gear treadmill. Everyone can access them as long as knows the optimal builds and plays them with reasonable skill.

Yes, GW2 is more accessible and fun due to the lack of a treadmill – which makes it ironic that the same mechanic has actually had the opposite effect on raiding (making it less accessible).

The problem is the devs carbon copied raiding from other games without taking this into account and implementing a GW2 solution or mechanic to address the issue (such as the tiered reward based on time of kill I posit).

That is EXACTLY why I say that raiding was poorly implemented and not fully thought out in GW2. I do hate comparisons to other games, but in this situation, because they adhered so closely to the raiding philosophy from those games (raiding = hardest content), I think it is a needed comparison.

All MMOs other than GW2 take accessibility into consideration in their core raid system design. It is ironic (and sad) that the one MMO that is typically the most accessible (GW2) forgets to add this important (regardless of what the more elitist players want to believe) element.

You are making no sense absolutely…

Just replace gear treadmill with getting the correct stat combination and learning the boss and you have the absolutely the same result.

You are actually saying that this is less accessible because it has a learning curve instead of a never ending equipment grind?

You are factually wrong…A greater part of the playerbase in GW are raiding compared to other games.

I finished all maps without the layline mastery. Not sure what community you are in but 8/10 times there where always people around to help and even mesmers to give portal for the unaccessible HPs. There where people that would even repeat the same HP 2-3 time straight because someone never got it.

It needs a bit of more patience because the maps are large and can easily distract people but people are still helping each other as much as usual.

It is supposed to be like that if you do not have the masteries. Its part of the challenge.

You will see the point when you return with a different character after you finished the jungle with the first.

When you return you are like a master. I finished Vb within a day and going around like a boss. You go through the challenge and you actually feel you are getting better at it.

When he trows the rocks, drop out of your glider, catch yourself a bit lower, works every time. You’re welcome.

That is useful indeed…AS long as the glider does not glitch as it often does in the instance…

Use the updrafts farthest away from the boss, and you should be far enough away to avoid being hit.

Some of the updrafts are only close to the boss. If you are unlucky enough to be at the part of the circle that does not have an updraft you have to go close or you are dead again. Again it feels that it is just luck based.

Then they should have locked the mission behind the mastery…Or at least have a message recommending the mastery. It makes no sense to run it without it. Its pretty much a requirement even if it is not mentioned. Otherwise its an exercise in frustration. Many people get in and just quit the story because of this.

Either do that or just make simple changes or at least do not reset the kitten boss when you die. Having to do a 20 minute fight all over again from scratch is just boring.

Liadri for example although it was difficult it never got boring as it had purely skill based mechanics and was a quick encounter. She was difficult and enjoyable at the same time. If you want to make sth that long create more checkpoints at least. This whole encounter (if you also take the bugs into consideration) feels very poorly designed.

I am taking about the act 4 boss inside the dream. I appreciate hard content and whole of HoT difficuly in general but boss phases based on pure luck like the gliding phase when avoiding those rocks is not my idea of hard. Especially when the boss resets when you die. After a while you just breeze over and over again through mechanics that you already learned and then pray that you are lucky enough to get through the gliding phase.

Please never ever do sth similar. Just that phase ruins the last mission and makes it a repetitive chore.

I guess I am one of the few that actually likes the time that I need to spend to earn the points. The HP hunting and difficulty was the most fun I had in game in a long time.
And I have many alts and still look forward to fight through for them also. With the masteries unlocked its actually much easier even if you do not have map completion.

Personally I think the only valid point is the slow progression in WvW.

I would make easy HP farming in EoTM possible after you have completed the story and maps once. Maybe with an extra vendor in EoTM. Thus people would stop complaining about the non existent grind and everyone would have the option to progress as the like to. Whether they want to challenge themselves ans spend time or want everything unlocked fast (not sure where is the fun on that but each to his own tastes).

Beta Weekend Scrapper Feedback Thread

The A.I. in the gyros does not bother much because I expect it to improve. But even with the A.I. improved they still seem underwhelming. Besides some very specific manoeuvres the gyros are not really that useful compared to kits and elixirs.

The traits seem well thought of and work well for power builds. The juggernaut synergy is really brilliant on a power build. The damage is amazing but…

That being said if you are going for a condi build there is not much to gain. Juggernaut that can give you the extra might competes with the burning on critical trait on the Core Specs. You gain some and you lose some.

I am not sure that for a condi build there is any real incentive to be a scrapper, since the gyros are not really that useful. Not that I have any issue with that if that is the plan from the start. But just as the devs say that they want to reduce reliance on zerker builds, you have a Spec that is really good only for power builds. I play a condi build and I really do not see any extra benefits compared to the builds you can make with the core Specs. It would be nice to see some love for the condi build on the scrapper.

Hammer skills are neat but nothing special. I guess they can work if you play strictly as a tanky/close combat style.

Unless you are willing to completely shift the way you play the engi with less mobility and more like a tank and want to use power builds the Spec is not really that useful. Hammer 3 looks awesome but feels uncontrollable so its nit a very good source for mobility.

Personally I ended up using the kits all the time as usual within an hour and almost forgot i was using the hammer.

I am just wodering here. Woundn´t the topics about guild missions, language and easier to find your allies be solved much better by adding a Home World chat and an open map list like the one in GW1 with queques? These seem like much more natural solutions in the problems. Plus they can do wonders in helping RP server/guilds, server identity and WvW recruitment from PvE that the mega server made worse.

I mean is there a major technical issue this cannot be done in GW2?

People really read to much in all this.

1. Taimi is a child and so Phlunt’s keeping the machine in a controled envirorment arguments make sense. Even though his motivation is that he is a thiefing little ****.
2. This is perfectly aligned to Azuran politics. If you played the personal story as an azura worst things are happening there.
3. You do not scorn off or kill(???) an ambassador of a race you need. So what? Issolate a whole race when there is a dragon comming over an intellectual rights dispute? Thats the option that makes sense?
And if you did that and the azura came anyway then it would just be bad writing and a meaningless option.
4. You did not help Phlunt take the machine. You just compromised to his wishes because of more important things (sth that Taimi also did the in the end). And to me this is as herioc as going guns blazing like a Tyrian Rambo or sth.
5. Taimi has a patent pending. She will be able to fight Phlunt’s claims later if need to.
6. And finally its just one invention she made as a child. She probably has hundred of these in her future. Its not the end of the world for her.

My topic was closed. Not even moved. Thanks mods.

This is greed. Log in, or pay. Vs a sub based game where you pay 50 cents a day for a month(15 dollars a month) and get all content ever released. I can log into WoW right now and go do Baradin Hold dallies from 2 years ago.

Not turning this into sub vs free game argument. But I do think its crap that arenanet made the conscious decision to place this content behind gems(even if its 200), instead of making it free like they said it always would be.

I haven’t logged in to play for weeks, I dont plan on it for another few months. When I return, if I ever return(cuz Wildstar is awsome), I’ll be so far behind that I’ll need to dish out the $$. Or, I have to remember every other week to log in. Like a freakin’ chore.

So may things wrong in this statement i do not know where to begin….

You are flaming about 200 gems that you can avoid by either just logging in or use in game money and that this is a rip -off, then your are playing wildstar (a sub-based and Play to buy game…Cool combination btw).

The reason that you can play in WoW the previous content is because your are CURRENLY PAYING FOR IT since you paid to log in. Yet you do not like it when a game tells you to either:

1. Pay for it (you know like wow)
2. Log in for a second
3. Use in game money.

And that is only for some of its content..The majority is still there for the original price.

You are basically saying that the possibility of paying for small chunks of the game if you are not active is a gready rip-off you cannot afford, as such you go and play WoW and wildstar that you have to constantly pay anyway for EVERYTHING.
Can you see the lack of logic in your thinking?

And GW2 is NOT a free game…Its a buy to play…Pay ONCE without paying constantly without end to play it. It excactly its original model….

It is unlock forever, for the account.

I just told my kids.. we cant go on holiday this year or maybe even next cos otherwise I gotta pay out another 200gems to catch up with LS season 2 …

EDIT – Problem solved, I just dug a big hole in the garden, filled it with sand then made another hole next to it.. just waiting for it to rain some more to fill the second hole up and create the perfect beach in my own back garden – they will never notice!

Well I guess this is their way around developing expansions and hiding the criticism of temporary content…

Really…?The 5 extra bucks you will have to spend or the 3 extra days of gaming to raise the in-game money is enough to make you feel you should not go on holiday…

Reading these comments tells me how people only look at the surface of things and ignore the truth.

First of all, there is not a lot of new players in NA and EU who go and purchase the game today. Most people who want to play GW2 already have the game. That means this is directed to another group of people: China market.

Second of all, this direction goes against everything that GW2 has stood by and that is the free contents updates they always advertised. The cost of 200 gems or the gold exchange rate is irrelevant here and a waste of space on the forums.

Last but not least, this strategy by ANet doesn’t sound promising financially. I understand a game studio needs money to survive but this sounds a bit like a cry of depression for cash.

Just my 2 cents….

So what you want a game to be sustained absolutely for free without any kind of monetizing? How many new players would care about the past content anyway… A new player has to first go through:

-leveling
-personal story
-world events
-dungeon and fractals
-WvW and sPvP
-World completion
-The current Living Story
-High level crafting

And after all these he might be thinking of checking on the past content. I really doupt that anyone will care that much unless the patch are huge and meanigful (like extra maps or races and amazing dungeons etc). But then they will actaully worth the price. And that he can still take the episodes for FREE with like 2-4 days of very moderate game times.
And that is without the festivals- you can easily make 20-30g in 3 hours in the pavillion.

Again it is sad to read another useless comment on how to farm gold to pay 200 gems for living story chapters.

The issue is much deeper than the cost of the contents but nobody sees it. The promise of free contents are now false and this MMO is now moved from a complete buy to play model to pay to play. It doesn’t matter if it is the past contents or whatever….

The point here is that how far will ANet go and will we ever see a gem price on future living story or other contents? Is this a sign that GW2 model of buy to play has failed abd are they just testing the community on how far we will tolerate.

That said, I understated a game studio costs money to run and the devs need to pay thier bills. But has the direction of the game brought this on itself? Did they push us to kitten the bi-weekly gem stories that everyone finally got turned off by it? And now the gem store is nothing more than a show room of stuff with no buyers….

No its not a pay to play. What you are saying is factually incorrect. Everyone that has the game will still get everyhting that is available now and they WILL still get FREE upadates every 2 weeks. How is the promise of costant free content false. The fact that you can buy the past content with in-game money is basically a play to buy model. Similar in idea of EVE online and Wildstar. pay to play is sub based games. The buy to play model that GW1 introcuded based its sustainnability with expansion and bonus mission mission packs. How is this any different? Actually it is…Because you could not buy those with in game money in GW1

Plus are you kidding…Have you seen how many players have mini-pets, armor pieces and black lion weapons skins out there that are bought only with gems

As a brand new player I would LOVE to be able to play LS1 first to “catch up” with what is going on, as LA before it was destroyed looks great and would love to be able to play up to current, so I am then up to date…

Would love as a new player to be able to jump in for Free and play LS1 so we can catch up, would suck if I had to pay for content that was Free and in my mind, should be included to build the story ( something that WOW Kittened up many years ago and part of why I no longer WoW because they have no clue how to keep a story running straight)

Then again I do not see that happening any more than them rewinding this ludicrous Trait system where I have to be lvl 50, to unlock traits I should have access to at 30.. without having to somehow get a lot of gold and Skill points I will need whil trying to get to 80, without spedning more RT cash buying gems to convert to gold to unlock something that was ( again) free to players before I started !!

Would you really care that much if you had already the free content to fill your time with? Believe me if you have the time to do all the other freely available content and end up having the time to try the past ones, you would have the gold to buy S1 with in-game money…Its not a big deal

Its very cose to play to buy in that sense…Which exactly why older players have access to more content. The played the game for a longer time

I like that they are going to make this material permanent but I’m really not impressed that the story line is monetized in any way. In my opinion that is a step in the wrong direction.

If you remeber to just login it does not cost a thing. Only players that bought the game after these releases will have an issue. And 200 are even easily made with gold too if you are an 80 LvL player…So as far as monetizing is concerned its pretty friendly..

If you’re at home and not on vacation, it does not cost a thing. Returning players will be kitten outta luck, and will have to pony up to play. That wont exactly encourage players to return. Like I said, it’s a step in the wrong direction.

Whether or not the price is “friendly” is debatable. I would note that game gold to gem prices have never gone down.

In all it’s not a bad idea, but there is a fly in the soup.

200 is either 30g that for 80lvl players is not a big deal or 2.5 bucks…You are not going on vacation for 6 months. This is pretty friendly. At most you will miss 1-2 of the releases. And also how many of the rerutning players will care about releases they missed 1 year ago. They will just participate on the current ones. Unless of they so huge and well made that would justify the price.

I am also against ripping off players with pay to win or subscription models but to consider any monetization as a ¨fly on the soup¨ is being irrational. Anet has to have some kind of steady income to sustain the game. This time instead of just mini pets or other cosmetic stuff you actually spend it for sth more potent. And yes 2.5 bucks or 3-4 days of moderate playing to raise the funds per patch is pretty friendly.

Its not about the skin. Its about the principle. Plain and simple.

Honestly, i don’t even really care about the skin, either. I’ve learned to deal with BS by just laughing about it, since no matter what I say or do, the powers-at-be always churn out the most mind-numbingly pathetic “solution” in every situation. I just figured I’d put my two cents in defending the people with concerns from all the ridiculous white knights defending a multi-million-dollar corporation lol. Go ahead and say I’m QQing. IDC. I’ll just LMFAO. :P

Anet is not a multi-million cooporation. You must be thinking of NCsoft that does not do any developing. Anet is a 200-300 ppl company. Their resources are more limited..

And man this forum is amazingly poisonous….Guys if they do not delay the reward giving they will not be able to fix it as it will be impossible to track what is correct and what is wrong…That was probably the reason they could not solve season 1 issues. It is amazing how bitter some comments are without even thinking what anet seems to have in mind.

1. They actually have faith in their megaserver system that it will be so better implemented that the high population servers will not see much of a difference. They claim that you will not be scattered but the choice will be based on party, guild and world and that you WILL still have the option to taxi as always. IF this is implemented as good as they claim (Big IF btw) how would that not retain the world sense of community.High popupaltion areas will still be filled with the same guilds from the same worlds. I really do not see the issue if things are actually working.

2. The reason for the very strected world boss schedule is also not arbitrary as many seem to think…Anet actually seems to expect that PvE guilds will organize and activate the bosses more often and keep the average spawn more or less the same as now. Probably if the player base proves them wrong they will end up making the spawning more dense.

I understand the idea of not believing that the claims on how well the megaserver algorithm will work are not going to be true in the end. I have the same worries…But many seem to see problems taking into account the direct claims that anet does, that are acutally there to address the problems they are worring about…

You realize that only 3 of the bosses on the list can be summoned at will by guilds, right?

Yeah…But these 3 are the bosses that most ppl have an issue with…The rest come-up more often, give less loot and are less challenging to be a real issue…

Probably what Anet is expecting is that guilds will activate the world bosses often enough for the sparse schedule not to be a problem. The schedule spawn might just be a there to make sure there is a minimum. I would expect that if the player base does not meet their expectations the will make the spawns more dense..

One of the biggest things that strikes me from reading through all these posts / replies, is how little people actually read the blog and try to understand it. Many of the “concerns” have already been addressed. Go read the blog and read the dev. replies and you may see your concern already explained.

A few examples

You can right click a friend and automatically join them on the map they are on. Guild missions? Have your guild leader or mission organizer on your friends list. He / she goes to the map, right click and join. Not very hard.

A dev already mentioned guesting. I dont have the exact quote but basically he said that when joining a map, your home server OR GUESTED server will weigh into that map you get. So RP’ers that normally guest to TC can still guest to TC and join all the other RP’ers.

Exactly…It amazing how many people made huge posts without even reading what the blog post said…Otherwise how could one miss the fact that taxing can still done between maps, that the HOME world is one that parameter that the megaserver takes into account and so it will not negate the “free” choice of server you have made or that questions like the world event timer thing will be ansered in a next post…
Ok the guest thing that is still present i get it, since it is easy to miss the forum post with so many pages.

We should really read the blog posts carefully before we immediately start raving on how much a change is absolutely great and how much we love this game or how completely bad a change is to the point of quiting the game (that i have seen some mentioning)
