the problem with ascended weapons

I think the people who say you don’t need ascended gear would be more than happy if ascended gear had the same stats as rare items.
Because, you know, you don’t need them.

Ascended Gear to Kill Builds and Alts?

No you don’t. Play something else. If enough people refuse to Grind, maybe they’ll wake up. I’m certainly not going to participate.

Wake up to what exactly?
They already got your money.

The way I see it, you bought the game (and I assume) because of what they promised, yet only a couple of months after launch they started doing this.
What makes you think they’ll care if you leave?

Ascended gear is here to stay, this much should be obvious since they started adding more instead of removing or nerfing them to exotic levels.

What is the point of Ascended?

The point of ascended?

As opposed to the logical and promised way of emphasizing player skill over gear, Anet decided it’d be a good idea to throw whatever integrity they had out the window in favor of a system which some people (me included) specifically didn’t want, and most certainly wasn’t what they paid for.

Instead of making players play through content, such as beating a difficult dungeon to get to a creature who infuses your gear, a precursor dungeon if you must call it something, Anet decided that player skill should mean absolutely nothing. Well, nothing in regards to content other than grinding the same thing over and over to achieve this exact same end.
Now we get to grind all day every day to meet the daily requirements to get items which shouldn’t have existed in the first place, and for what? To do one dungeon… Fractals of the mist. They can try to spin the story as much as they want, such as fotm being multiple dungeons in one, but the truth is, it’s just one dungeon.

Let’s look at what has been going on:
People wanted challenging content for PvE, but all Anet could deliver was simple, repetitive and easy, all but Fractals of the mist, at least regarding the “easy” part, as higher levels of fotm do get tough.
A dungeon which gradually gets harder the more you “complete” it, is an excellent system. It allows people to show others (and themselves) what they’re made of.
This would have been fine if not for agony resistance. Instead of allowing players to find out how far they could go on their own, Anet added a gear check to a game which previously didn’t have it, well, at least not a real one, because exotics are relatively cheap and easy to get.
But instead of just adding infusion the way it was done in the original Guild wars, Anet’s next decision is what broke everything they had promised ever since they announced guild wars 1; They added Ascended tier.
Why did they do this? Ascended gear could have had the same stats as exotics, the only difference being that you could add +5 agony resistance to it, there was absolutely no need for ascended gear to be superior in any other way to exotics.
I am dumbfounded as to why Anet went this way, I had faith in Anet’s ability to come up with new content, but they did what a plethora of other (usually p2w) mmo’s out there do. They added gear treadmill. It’s so much easier to write 1045-1155 than it is to design actual content.

Arguing that “you don’t need ascended gear” is as ridiculous as it is false. First thing of course is, that if I don’t need it, ascended gear most definitely doesn’t need higher stats than exotics, I could make a counter-argument just as dumb as the original “Ascended gear should have the same stats as green gear”, because you don’t need them. But in reality, if I wanted to go deeper into fotm I need ascended gear. The tentacle creature will at some point wipe a team with no agony resistance no matter what they did. And people can’t honestly say, that the only reason we have a requirement for a whole new resistance in the game, is just because of one dungeon. Anet will add more content, and because they can’t think of anything else, they add agony to it if they think it’ll make it “harder”.
Or is anyone going to argue that after they’re done with fotm, they add a new dungeon with “agony-2”, which requires “agony-2 resistance”, and requires you to build gear specific only to that one dungeon.
But even if that was the case. There would still be no reason for ascended gear to have higher stats than exotics.

Anet messed up, they won’t admit it, simple as that. They can’t stop making ascended gear, because that would be to admit their mistake.
They promised me one thing and it took only a couple of months for them to show their true integrity. I didn’t buy this game, I bought guild wars 2.

Any other company and I wouldn’t be this offended, but I actually believed what they said. I wish I could get my money back, so that I could show that I do not want anything to do with what they’ve done with this game. But that’s not going to happen, what is going to happen is me quitting gw2 permanently, with absolutely no trust in Anet and a sour taste in my mouth because I can’t help but feel that I was worth nothing but the money I paid. They could at least be honest about that last part, instead of saying how much they care about their players.

The point of ascended gear? It was the easiest solution to a problem that didn’t even exist.

Ascended Gear to Kill Builds and Alts?

Unanimous.1486

People have been against or indifferent about ascended (or any increase in gear tiers) ever since GW2 launched.
Why on earth would they keep doing something which has an overall negative reaction from their playerbase?

I quit this game for 8 months, came back hoping to see things becoming better, but it seems Anet is not making a game for me.
I waited so many years for this game, and I can’t help but feel betrayed about this. This is the absolute opposite of what I thought the progression in this game would be.

Seriously, you make BiS gear and you expect people not to try to go for them? If it’s not such a big deal why not make ascended gear as easy to access as exotics? I hate people saying “you don’t need ascended”, if I don’t need them over exotics, THEY DON’T NEED HIGHER STATS THAN EXOTICS.

eh… as I previously said, I quit for 8 months, and what I’m seeing… I didn’t delete everything gw2 from my computer in hopes of them setting things right, but once the crafting patch hits… I’m out permanently.
This game’ll leave a sour taste in my mouth, because I’ll be left feeling like all they wanted was for me to buy the game after which I became worthless to them.

It’s probably closer to 8 months than 6, but I can’t remember the day I stopped playing gw2 completely.

Anyways, I’m back to check whether things have changed for the better.
So, while I download what seems to be over 10Gb of files, I’d like people to post what’s changed since when I was gone.

I assume ascended tier, which I consider to be Anet’s oath breaker, is still in the game.

So, any good news?

I despise dailies.
What they do is force the player to play a certain minimum amount per day to keep up with everybody else. That’s work, not pastime

Dailies are an artificial way of prolonging a game’s life, and a bad one at that.

It saddens me so much that gw2 was a game I waited for so long, and then it became stale in about half a year. Haven’t played it at all for 3 months now, and I don’t see any reason to play GW2 anymore.

honestly though, if they plan on continuing the way they’re doing things, they might just aswell make gear progression identical to the infinite run-of-the-mill MMO’s out there and stop calling the game guild wars 2, and rename it into “a generic MMO with a setting based on guild wars”

Yeah well that’s what happens when you don’t bother to learn to dodge the whole time while you’re leveling.

Odd levels below 20 are extremely hard because, believe it or not, there are people who don’t know what dodge is, which is also the reason they’re stuck at those levels.

If magic find is OK, then that means other type of stat combinations offer too much stats. You have to reduce or remove certain stat combinations then, because they’re just not needed. Just make every main stat into +mf.
However, this is to assume that drops as they normally are, are not good enough, that you’ll have to normalize your drops with added +mf.

Any way you look at it, +mf just doesn’t fit into any game.
If the content is balanced with +mf in mind, then it’s horribly balanced cos it assumes everyone gets +mf.
If it isn’t balanced with +mf in mind, then it’s a normal way of balancing things, in which case +mf is a horrible concept.

If you have it, you get a vastly better chance for drops.
Since a person with +mf is pushing out more stuff, they push down the value of said drops, which in turn affects people who DON’T have +mf.
So, to compete EVERYONE has to get +mf. It’s not just in dungeons that it’s harmful, it’s harmful for the whole game economy.

just make it possible to infuse the rings and back items with something other than mist essences. There are people (like me) who don’t have enough vials and globs to craft even 1 shard even after over 300 fractals.

How more random can it be?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Unanimous.1486

Random is and always has been bad.
Someone does over 400 fractals and still doesn’t have enough mist essence to infuse the few rings he has, and then you have another who does level 20 fractal for the first time and receives an infused ring of the stat they want.
Then ofcourse there are the case when drop values differ so much, that it’s outright unfair for everybody else. Why should someone be paid 300g+ in items when others who did just as much, if not sometimes even more, receive just a miniscule fraction of that?

There should be the least amount of random things as possible.

The patch made it so you can get the exact ring you want and the infused version of it once you’ve spent enough time in fractals. True there’s RNG on the mist essences but if you’ve done 100 fractals you’ll definitely have some.

10 Jade Maw kills lvl 10+ you can buy an ascended ring.

ascended ring + 5 vials of mist essence + 3 globs of mist essence + 1 shard of mist essence combined in the mystic forge = infuse your ascended ring.

I have 3 globs and 5 vials, and I’ve done well over 300 fractals. Even if I do get 10 pristine tokens, I still can’t get an infused ring.

And to make matters worse, I still don’t have enough vials/globs/shards to infuse a ring. and to make matters even worse, even if I do get a ring, NONE of them are the type I want.

Remove thief stealth skills, add a class skill “stealth”, which will be next to “steal”.
New stealth will last indefinitely, costs 2 initiative to activate, takes 2.33 initiative per second (so in total they’ll lose 1 initiative per second after the natural regeneration of the stat).

No more “I burst, I fail, I stealth, I run”.
This will force them to consider when to use stealth defensively or offensively.

Make greatswords smaller or other weapons bigger.

As it stands right now, most greatswords are alot bigger than the biggest hammers, infact, most greatsword hilts are bigger than most hammer heads.

So either make greatswords have a more realistic size by cutting the wideness of most of them by 2/3 or go with the unrealistic sizes and triple the size of other weapons so they can atleast compete with being as visual as greatswords are.

My hope is that greatswords become smaller, however I’m fine with making everything else bigger, but seeing as that’d make everything look as comical as greatswords do it’s not really a good option.

So my question is, how do I report such behavior, as it clearly is harmful to other players, since now I have to do lvl 20 FotM all over again for the daily chest.

For lack of better knowledge, I reported him for scamming, since basically he scammed me into helping him reach the daily chest at the end.

Any ascended ring that has the same or similar stats to an exotic one, is better. Level 10 FotM is NOT hard at all to do daily, even with as few as 3 people.
By increasing the chance of those rings, Anet will just throw more fuel to the fire that’s burning away any integrity they hold.

My point is:
Higher chance for ascended rings -> Exotic ring values plummet.

Why does agony punish vitality builds?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Unanimous.1486

Unanimous.1486

Assuming no other damage source than agony, they’re both equally likely to die. But the issue is healing back up again afterwards. If one guy has 22k max HP and is reduced to 10%, he has nearly 20k HP he has to heal back up again. The other guy with 13k max HP only has to heal less than 12k HP to be full.

the difference between taking 8k dmg a second as opposed to 4k, is that you can outheal the 4k dmg a second.

How is this so hard to understand?

Why does agony punish vitality builds?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Unanimous.1486

Unanimous.1486

It’s a percentage of your total health, no? So X% is X% it’s hurting your equally resistant friend the same regardless of your max HP. So although your numbers may be higher, it still effects the both of you equally with regard to your survivability.

I fail to see the issue.

Let’s say agony does 33% of your max hp as dmg per tick.
If you have 22k hp, you get hit by 7.26k a tick.
If you have 13k hp, you get hit by 4.29k a tick.

Your healing power works seperately from your vitality/hp.

If you still can’t see why having high hp is harmul, you’re beyond hope.

Only elite stealth abilities should allow for complete freedom for the duration.

moreover:
Stealth given by Shadow Refuge should dispel when the Area of Effect disappears. A 10 second mass invisibility after the skill has ended is broken on so many levels it’s not even funny. It is way too powerful in any environment, be it PvE or PvP.

I agree with Unanimous, and believe that MF shouldn’t replace stats, rather it should be something that is perhaps “imbued” into gear if it is to exist at all.

It’s existance only shows that Anet considers that the game loot system is imbalanced and requires a stat to correct it.

Why can’t the droprates be the same without +mf gear, as it is now with max +mf?
Is it too much?
- then isn’t +mf too good?
Doesn’t the fact that you’re missing half the stats your items give bother you?
- then why do they exist in the first place?

Either droprates are too low and require fixing and/or gear is too good.
Since getting better drops equals more gold, it not only makes it unfavorable to play without +mf gear, but it actually screws up the game economy.

Why do I need my full +mf gear? Shouldn’t I be farming just as well without it? what gives?

Thank you for your outstanding input.

You claim that it’s not as effective as other gears. (I did AC in green gear and nobody gave a flying kitten about it, yet we succeeded.) But let’s say you’re right and it’s not really as effective. Result? I go out and kill mobs a bit slower, and in return I got the chance for better rewards. Still can’t see the problem with it.

Also please don’t act like it would be impossible to do any dungeon if one member of the party is in full MF gear. It’s clearly not, even if all party members were in ful MF gear.

Now where did I say it was impossible to do so?

My problem with MF is that it’s not working the majority of the time i wear it. When i have 0 MF on then I get more drops and more greens then anything (and occasionally I get rares) I calculated today (if they all stack that is) that I estimate my MF to be about 278% when i have my full set with pirate runes, omnom bars, both guild buffs going at once and my luck rune is at full 25 buffs and I still get nothing most of the time.

There’s something wrong with this. Why does it drop less when the % is so high when it should do the opposite, why do i get more greys with this then at any other time, and why does it not have an indicator somewhere on my character screen telling me what my real percentage is at?

It only increases chances, doesn’t make anything certain.

You could toss a coin a million times and get nothing but tails. Statistically improbable, but it can happen.

The real question here is, how much stats did you sacrifice?

You’re actually a prime example to show what’s wrong with +magic find.
Thank you for your outstanding input.

Remove +magic find from items.

And how exactly did you arrive at these figures?

101 / (101+72+72) = 0.41… = 41%
72 / 101 = 0.71… = 0.71 = 71%
981(main stat amount) x 0.71 = 782 (secondary stat amount).
1698/(1897+165) = 1698/2062 = 0.82. with runes. (+165 is for the main stat).
1998/2362 = 0.845… = 0.85. with full trait line bonus and runes.

So the difference varies from 18 to 15% less stats depending on how much you’ve invested in the trait line that gives you the stat.

It’s not a question of whether it’s needed or not. It’s a question of efficiency. People will always do everything they can to get the best result per unit of time spent. Even if the drops were fair, they would still do it, because that would get them more.

And you cannot really say that they are doing any less. For example, people in Knight’s Armor get the same amount of Power and Precision, but they get an additional ton of Toughness. Well that Toughness doesn’t improve their power, so screw them, right? What about combinations like Vitality/Power/Healing or Healing/Power/Toughness?

You obviously cannot say that more Toughness makes Player A more of an asset than player B. After all, Toughness does not mean Armor, which is all that matters. Similarly, all the defense in the world is worth much less than good dodging ability. Same is obviously true for Vitality.

And how would you compare someone with Power/Toughness/Vitality to someone who has Healing/Power/Toughness? Or to someone with Precision/Power/CD?

A person who has the main stat of his/her armor the stat he/she uses for a specific purpose, will always be more effective in said purpose than a person who has 15-18% less stats than he/she.
What’s more, the difference is alarmingly big when it’s about non-pow/pre/tough/vit main stat of an item.
For example, healing power.
697/1146 = 0.608
997/1346 = 0.74 (full trait).
The amount of healing power you have is 39 – 26 % less than one who uses it for his/her main stat.
Though I have yet to find a piece with +magic find and healing power, so realistically.
300/1346 = 0.22…
A whopping 78% less healing power. if you went for +magic find.
Empower heals 1800 at 300 healing power.
Empower heals 2900 at 1400 healing power.
1800/2900 = 0.62.
1005/1830 = 0.549 = 0.55
1090/1442 = 0.755 = 0.76
So, depending on your spell, your healing is 24-45% less effective, if you use +magic find.

41% less results in the remainder being 59%, by the way.

0.41/0.59 = 0.694… = 0.69.
the 41% is 69% more to the 59%, if the 59% was the full 100%.

Now about roles, which you seem to be oblivious of:
damage done = weapon dmg x power / armor
lets use D = X/A
A full knight’s has around 3500 armor = Ak
Full heavy armor = 1211 armor.
base toughness is 916.
so no knight’s = 2127 armor. = Aa
Ak = 1.65Aa
so
Dk = 0.606Da.

basically, a full knight’s has 65% more hp than no knight’s. This also “amplifies” healing done to you by 65% aswell.

Still, this can all be simplified:

A person with magic find will always be less effective than someone without.
a travelers/explorer’s will always be less tanky or deals less dmg or heals much less than a knight’s/berserker’s/cleric’s.

There is absolutely no sense in favoring those who do less.

Let’s make an extreme example, if you didn’t understand my point:
If someone did nothing at all during an instance. Just stood there. But for some reason Anet thinks that this person is more important than the 4 others, and decides, that he should get ten times as much drops as any of the rest.

right now it’s not that extreme.
It’s 20-40% less effect, but 200% more rewards.
my example was just 5 times as bad as it is now.
